5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent supplement to the Hillman/Summers Casebook
This hornbook makes reading the case book very, very easy.It summarizes all of the concepts from their textbook in a simple and concise manner.I highly recommend reading this book and staying afew pages ahead of your assigned text reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent prepatory book
I bought this and used it heavily through Contracts, and found it took be a very good supplement to the casebook. It covers the main issues in very good detail, but cannot be trusted as a single source for contract law of course - a short book could not be expected to do that.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good
Good study aid. He didn't cover some topics iwith the same detail as my professor, but what he does cover is presented in a concise and clear manner. I also enjoyed his perspective on contract law, for example the way he organizes the material and the examples he uses to present the ideas. Overall I'm glad I read this as part of my exam preparation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better, I think
Well, the fact that I'm writing a review about this book, while it's sitting open on my desk next to my computer, open and not being read, might be some evidence of how I'm enjoying this book. This book just goes on and on in complex an unclear language about a subject which shouldn't be so difficult. This book is not clear or easy to understand at all. Every sentence is awkward and followed by a footnote, and the masses of footnotes together take up half of EACH page (!), making this work look like a research project for a PhD publication. I have the casebook in this series, and sometimes it seems reading the cases alone will bring more clarity. And it turns to be true! This book might be good if you're advanted-contracts and want to know every little detail, or as an advanced reference later on, to look something up like in an encyclopedia. Some concepts, which should be pretty clear just get too in-depth coverage in this book. It's too complex for a first-year student. Sometimes it starts describing the different views out there, and then there's a jumble in your head as to what the law really is. I wish the author used his own knowledge and fluid language more than footnoted ideas from other authors.

1-0 out of 5 stars Best used as a doorstop.
This book tells you nothing that the U.C.C., Restatement 2nd, and a basic cases and examples book (Farnsworth, for instance) doesn't already tell you. This hornbook, however, is much denser and dryer than these other texts.Surely there must be better study texts out there than this for the first-year Contracts student.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best Hornbook I Own
And I own far too many, especially for someone who actually spends time writing Amazon reviews.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missed Its Target Audience...
Undeniably, Professor Stoebuck is one of the brightest scholars around in Property law, but this book misses its mark for what it was intended for.West's Hornbook series are designed to be used by first year law students learning the law, non-legal scholars who need a quick reference for whatever they are working on, or the practicing attorney who doesn't have the time or money to use one of West's multi-volume practicioner series treatises.
3-0 out of 5 stars Heavily detailed, but useful for Property students
ALthough this text contains about 10x what the average 1L will need for a Property exam, it was a very helpful guide through a very difficultsubject. It will remain on my shelf just in case I change the very core ofmy being and someday become a real estate lawyer.Students of Property:this is the ONLY text that will help you outside of the classroom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for a difficult area of the law
This is an excellent treatise covering the major areas and topics of property law.It is sighted often by leading casebooks, including Singer's Property Law.I highly recommend this book to law students as the othersecondary sources in this area of law are woefully lacking. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Tort Itself
This is biased, pro-plaintiff, and hard to follow. It is a self-justifying, defender of the out of control legal profession. Only 60 pages are devoted to the defense. There is nary a word, beyond brief dismissal, of the devastation wrought upon our besieged Nation by the profession. There is nary a word about changing the unconscionable 80% error rate in tort litigation. There is nary a word about the wackiness that passes for judicial decision making, mind reading, fortune telling, etc. 5-0 out of 5 stars A fine hornbook
This excellent volume was one of my own study aids during my first year of law school and it's now a valued part of my burgeoning law library.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tort book
An excellent book about tort law. The author revises every issues and explains clearly the subject. Dobbs quotes abundant cases and bibliography too. The content is : Part I. Introducing Tort Law;Part II: Physical interference with person or property; Part III, Operating and altering the tort system in personal injury cases. Finally, I must point out that this book (with 1600 pages) have an accurate updating. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to West Hornbook Quality
I own all five first year West Hornbooks (Property, Contracts, etc.) and they all are a great help except for this one.It seems every time I have a question, this one doesn't have an answer.I love the other West Hornbooks, and after using the others, I just can't put this one in the same category for breadth, helpfulness or clarity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great help
This book was first recommended to me by an undergraduate professor as a tool for gaining a fundamental understanding of certain limited cases. However, after checking it out from the library on multiple occasions, Ifinally broke down and bought it.The authors present material in such away that even those subjects beyond the scope of my research becameinteresting. 5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and reliable
The "book description" above belongs to a different book: this hornbook is not part of the "Black Letter Series," its author is not Professor Clermont, and it doesn't come with a handy computer disk.5-0 out of 5 stars Arizona State Law Student
This is the most helpful study aid available for Civil Procedure!Thetext is very easy to understand and it is orgainized to follow theprogression of the law school course. The authors do an excellent job ofexplaining the development of personal jurisdiction and subject matterjurisdiction to the present day.It also does a fine job of explaining thefederal rules (and includes an index of each FRCP and where it is cited).

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source for information to supplement a casebook
This is another in the long line of hornbooks from West publishing. It is an excellent source to supplement and even embellish the law of Civil Procedure contained in whichever casebook you are using.Since most CivilProcedure courses are a year long, I would strongly recommend investing inthis hornbook, it is very handy to have when outlining and preparing forfinals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As good as being in a class with Lilly
I'm actually not just saying that: I just finished taking Evidence with Graham Lilly, and his (excellent) book captures his lectures almost perfectly.I'm shocked that such a clear, lucid explanation of the Federal Rules of Evidence (as well as their evolution and major common law departures) fits in such a tiny, succint book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for Graham Lilly
I recently took evidence with one of the worst teachers in the history of the legal profession.Thank god Lilly's book is clear, thorough, and resourceful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Book From A Students Perspective.
I found this book very useful both during law school and at my summer clerkships. While most states, or at least a good portion, have adopted something similar to the Federal rules on evidence, this book provides help understanding that tradition as well as the common law. This book does a really good job of providing a summation of either without proving too difficult to learn from or to sit with for extended periods of time. The only concern I would raise is if your state or the one you practice in goes clearly one way it may be better to buy the specific hornbook for your state. But for me, I'm not sure where I am going to end up for the bar so reading both sides has helped me tremendously. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic. One of the best study guides on the market.
Brief, clear statements of the law. Lots and lots of practice problems. Just a fantastic study guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent treatise
This is an excellent treatise on the law of property.Because the sections on Bailments, Gifts, Rights of Possessors of Land, Present Possessory Freehold Estates, and Future Interests were very useful, I would recommend this book for the first semester of property.Unfortunately, Hovenkamp's coverage of issues traditionally discussed in second semester property is not as useful. For second semester, I would suggest using Understanding Property of the Understanding Series. This series is published by Lexis.Understanding Property is also useful for first semester, but because Hovenkamp's treatise covers first semester issues well, it's not really necessary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another night law students dream
This is a very consise treatise of Property Law - it is not your typical hornbook - this is an excellent study book - with excelent hypos - it has very terse restatements of the law with killer Essay - hypo problems ( Lots of them too - numbers of roughly tracking the importance of the subject - IE lots of Adverse Possession probs - a few finders law probs ) - its like a Siegels or Emanuels Q&A but with hard covers - it is really a "find" for those studying property law. Im tickled the most recent edition is 2001 ! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Sorry but it's not that good
Too vague for a hornbook. It does not clearly and concisely state the laws of civil procedure. It also spends a lot of time stating the author's feelings about civil procedure. For example, at the end of most chapters, he has a section called "reform proposal" where he offers his opinion on where the law should go. Some of the author's ideas are brilliant and interesting, but if I answered a test question using the vague style he uses, or based my answer on where I thought the law should be, my professor would be annoyed. It also has no practice problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Resourceful
If your passionate about learning the law of contracts or simply want to have a secondary legal resource for contracts at your finger-tips - this is the book.Very well-written, but very long, this book has been a valuable resource and guide for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Corbin in One Volume: A Good Overview
This is the seminal multi-volume work reduced to a single volume. As all law students know, Corbin is one of the great masters of contract law; his multi-volumn work is often quoted by courts. This single volume is anexcellent overview of the concepts embodied in his expanded treatise.Practicioners beware, the single volume omits entire sections of themulti-volume work, and leaves out virtually all of the case citations andfootnotes so important for writing legal documents. All in all the singlevolume is a good quick reference, but you will need the multi-volume workfor the more in-depth treatment required for everyday legal work. ... Read more
