5-0 out of 5 stars A great IP text book
I got the first edition of this book because it was the required text for a course I took in UC Berkeley a number of years ago.I have been practicing IP law for about 10 years and I still use it as a quick reference (I also obtained the 2nd Edition). In my opinion this is a very well done book and an useful tool for someone who wants to have the overall picture of a complex issue.

4-0 out of 5 stars Primer, No Less
A waste of paper is rather harsh. Yes, this book is not for the paralegal, but I found that it was a great primer for those that may be interested in some of the operation of law -- exactly who I am. I have no real desire to be a paralegal or more, nor do I want to study law in school, but this book is great in that I am presented with basic information in readable form, with no background in law. I give this four stars because it seems to advertise highly technical information, when it really isn't.

1-0 out of 5 stars 200+ pages of useless copyright info.
A useless text for the real world.Patent paralegals are in demand and this book does not help prepare them.Copyright prosecution for paralegals is limited to finding the proper form that the client can fill-in themselves. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Legal Contracts
I found this book most useful for the CD-ROM's legal contracts. As a consultant, I use these for all my clients.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, bad editing
There is a lot of good information and discussion in this book about the topics which a contract should cover. It falls down, however, when it comes to the actual contracts.Just comparing the website and the custom software contracts, there are differences where there shouldn't be.In the software contract, it's theCustomer, in the website contract, it's the Client.A bit more than half of the contract sections with (mostly) identical headings and purpose have unexplained differences between them. Many of these differences are not trivial. In the text, the contracts are interleaved with explanations, but often the commentary/annotations are just restatements of the contract itself, which is a real time-waster, especially if you've read the background material earlier in the book.Other occasional editing snafus include explanatory comments inside the contract text, formatting syntax commands on the page (END SECTION), and a less than clear and concise structure for indicating optional clauses (the intended combinations aren't always clear, even though customization is to be expected).Given the fuzzy line between a website and a web application (ie 'custom software' (and really, what website is NOT custom?)), and given the marked similarities in over half of the two contracts, why not cover the overlapping sections just once, instead of twice, but inconsistently? And the sections that don't overlap, or overlap badly? No real explanation as to the reasons for the differences.I hope I don't have the same problems with the two versions of the independent contractor agreement.Fishman has written a pile of legal books for the layman, including the more recent "Consultant And Independent Contractor Agreements 5th Edition".I have to wonder: "Quantity over quality?"Perhaps when he is working on the next edition of this book ("Legal Guide to Web & Software Development", due out 8/2007), he will take the time to re-organize some of the content and get a capable editor.A determined reader can sort out the differences on their own, but it need not be so difficult. The content is 5 stars (including 24 documents in RTF format), but making it work for you is a real pain if you care about details.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complex But Wonderful Nonetheless
The book is written in a very complex style -- especially the sections where Lessig goes into the nitty gritty of the architecture behind the Internet -- but the book is a wonderful read, especially for those who come from the mindset that copyright laws should serve to give full control to the creator. While Lessig's style is unnecessarily complex, the book is ultimately worth the effort -- especially for Internet enthusiasts and entrepreneurs who need to understand the implications of copyright laws and how they affect culture and future ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important book for IP lawyers and internet architects
This is the best of Lessig's books that I've read so far.Lessig is one of the more articulate spokespersons for the movement to protect the public domain, which includes such groups as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Creative Commons, etc., although he may be more moderate in his views than some.1-0 out of 5 stars From whence comes invention?
Ultimately, the flaw in Lessig's books is his belief that the revolution of personal computing and the internet are the products of intellectuals like himself.Undermining the freedom and property rights of the programmers and companies who really invented these marvels is a profound threat to one of America's most vital and creative industries. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Reference for Anyone Unclear about Copyright Issues
This is an excellent, time-saving reference that explains the process of "getting permission" in plain language and demystifies most of the myths and assumptions surrounding copyright issues. The author goes beyond giving general advice on how to get permission by providing step by step instructions and easy-to-use forms. This book should be read before starting your creative work...it'll inform you of what's legal and what isn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference!
There is a lot of information in this book, lots to read and it is very in depth on the subject of copyrighted materials. What is very convenient is that the book includes a CD which has all of the forms that you will need to seek permission for various copyrighted materials. There are few books out there that will answer so many topics related to this subject in the detail that it does. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye opening; everyone should read this book
Professor Litman tackles the dense and often counterintuitive basis of copyright law and delivers an easy to understand explanation of what copyright law is, what it attempts to accomplish, why it was deemed necessary, and how it came to be that copyright owners (e.g., the RIAA) are suing your teenage sons and daughters.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Difficult Read - But Good Information
I found this to be a maddening book to read. The author is a lawyer, and this is apparent from the writing style. I don't know why law schools teach their students to write in such a meandering and confusing manner. However, lawyers should consider that the general population, even the educated portion is not trained (or really interested) in reading this peculiar writing style. Jessica Litman states that she thinks US copyright law has been gerrymandered to the point where it is virtually unintelligible, but then proceeds to do the same thing to her book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Recent History of Copyright Law
This is a good book if you want a detailed history of how copyright law evolved to accomodate digital technology and the Internet. That is the focus of Litman's work. Her writing is engaging and straightforward, and she has good reasons for being pessimistic and disappointed with the current Copyright Act. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage
Many people get al excited when they first try to get into the music business only to get shot down by the many intricate twists and turns involving all the legal aspects of running a record label. Mountains of forms and paperwork with no understanding slowly stack up on the producer's desk with no end in site. The situation is a cry for help and that help comes in the form of information, information obtained by reading this very interesting book that details all that is involved with law aspects of this kind.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-read.
This book is hella boring, but its definitely a necessity for anyone involved in music. It clears up a lot of questions, and a lot of things you might have never even thought about. Reading this book is a must if you want a grasp on legal concepts. I also suggest "101 Music Business Contracts" from Platinum Millenium.

4-0 out of 5 stars Necessary book and usefull information!
this book isnt all its cracked up to be but has plenty of really good onformation and examples hide inside it. from how to negotiate a contract to many other laws and such this book covers mainly all of it. for a better less boring book that has plenty of examples in it i suggest the book by ty cohen "101 Music Business Contracts" you cant go wrong with that one! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
This book (textbook) is an excellent resource for just about everything in TV. The disk included is a great utility to have for printing out your own contracts. I only with this book could be updated, say, every two years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stolen 3 times... This book is hot!!!
This book is so hot that it's been stolen from my office library 3 times. I'm on my 4th purchase of this book. I felt like I could have an intellegent conversation about any aspect of the television business after using this book. It is my main resource for getting quick answers that are easy to understand. This is required reading for those getting started and a great resource for those that have been in the industry a while. It also includes a computer disk containing forms such as U.S. Copyright registration and others found in the book that you can import to your word processor.5-0 out of 5 stars Imagine the Future, Study the Past

2-0 out of 5 stars Slow Paced Plot and Rather Flat Characterization
ERRORS AND OMISSIONS has been promoted as a "gripping legal thriller" but I didn't find it particularly gripping or thrilling.
5-0 out of 5 stars Page Turner!
Errors and Omissions is an immensely enjoyable read.It builds into an engrossing page turner - the stay-up-too-late-at-night-to-read kind.Michael Seeley is a complicated and realistic character - very talented and deeply flawed.Seeley's client, a media conglomerate, is desperate, manipulative and dangerous. The book is very smartly plotted, and an unusual and entertaining mix of history (Hollywood blacklist), artists' rights, and copyright law.The writing evokes a strong sense of time and place.I finished the book hoping that there is a sequel, if only to resolve some of the unanswered questions about Seeley's future.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent First Effort and Quite Entertaining
I thoroughly enjoyed "Errors and Omissions." For a first novel, Mr. Goldstein has done quite well. The story hangs together well and, most importantly, it was both believable and engaging. I have only two quibbles with the book. First, every single character in the book was dysfunctional on some level. No one came from a normal family. Those that aren't plagued by alcoholism are either criminally deviant or suffer from one or more pyschoses. Would it be so terrible if at least one of the characters was quasi-normal (or would that make the book boring)?Second, the central charcter in the book, attorney Michael Seeley, is forever analyzing the morality and ethics of the decisions that confront him, almost always seeking the high ground.Except Mr. Goldstein conveniently overlooks a huge eithical lapse on Mr. Seeley's part--his willingness, while still in the employ of his law firm, to negotiate payments under the table from his client that he has no intention of sharing with his partners. Not only will this get you disbarred, there is a criminal term for it as well. It's called embezzlement. But these are minor flaws in whatotherwise was an entertaining novel, perfect for your next cross-country bussiness trip. ... Read more
