5-0 out of 5 stars A fine and thorough book
Litwak provides about as much as a professional could share in this throrough outing. He also shares 'boilerplate' contracts for virtally all key players in a film production.Of course, direct experience is the best teacher, but EVERY neophyte in film or television must own this book, and its a handy reference for seasoned professionals and part-timers.5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book on contracts for film/TV
Mark Litwak's book is by far the best book available on film and television contracts. His book is a no nonsense, thorough guide to the complex world of contractual law for an industry that has a history of taking advantage of those who don't take the time or spend the money to hire good legal representation. He is an advocate for the rights of artists, writers, actors, etc., and his contracts are a good basis for negotiations and deals in the TV/Film industry. Even if you hire your own attorney, this book will help you understand the structure of your deal and alert you to details and potential booby traps in all that fine print.D. Kuspa ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PROBABLY THE BEST COPYRIGHT HORNBOOK OUT THERE
THis is the best Copyright treatise out there for law students ( You cant haul NIMMER multiple volumes around with you )It is incredibly concise - has all the relevant cases that are the providence of lawschool casebooks. It lays everything out in a logical manner - Doictrine, Case, Policy & Rule ( elements). I highly recommend this. 5-0 out of 5 stars Really provocative
I loved this illuminating and thought-provoking book.Lessig makes a compelling argument against extended copyright laws and other issues that may interfere with creating new projects based on derivative works.
4-0 out of 5 stars Intellectual Property Rights & HIV/AIDS
Like we need another review here. Anyhow, my 2 bits . . . because no one else has mentioned it.
5-0 out of 5 stars a fantastic read. well crafted - couldn't put it down!
i am a content creator myself (artist and graphic designer) and this presented issues of intellectual property, copyrights and file sharing in a proper perspective. lessig stays fairly moderate throughout, borrowing rally cries from both the left and the right. the reviewer who called him a "communist" has obviously not read the whole book. a person of such limited mental faculty probably had difficulty finishing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-Written Coverage of a Complicated Subject
This is a very rewarding and well-written text on all the issues concerned with the First Amendment, which are far more complicated than you might think. The book starts strongly with in-depth coverage of the original language of the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights, different schools of thought on the nature of free speech, and how the doctrine of free speech developed over time. Key concepts such as the "content distinction" are then introduced, followed by distinct chapters on problematic free speech issues such as hate speech, sexual material, and speech in public schools. Farber does a good job of detailing important court cases in which relevant free speech rules were defined, as well as interesting contemporary cases in which new issues have been raised. The best aspect of this book is Farber's very strong writing about ethical issues, social problems, and unclear court doctrines. He's very good at coming up with hypothetical situations to illustrate loopholes in First Amendment law, and his examination of the social issues behind hate speech and pornography are outstandingly written and evenhanded, and are the impressive highlights of the book. This is highly recommended for anyone studying the unexpectedly complicated realm of free speech in America. [~doomsdayer520~]

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking
Farber takes the first amendment and in an easy to understand fashion explains how the Supreme Court interprets laws regarding our free speech as American Citizens. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Well-done book on IP
Overall, I thought this book was pretty well-done.
5-0 out of 5 stars Top case-book on IP
The authors are luminaries of Boalt, UC Berkeley. The book is for students, and therefore concentrates on precedents. For European lawyers, better versed in commentaries and systematic works, this always is a problem. As such the work is the best, talking of high tech and intellectual property law.Do not forget "Software and Internet Law" by the same authors + Pam Samuelson.4-0 out of 5 stars Intellectual Property in the New Technological Age
This book is an excellent text dealing with multiple aspects of American intellectual property law.As a Canadian law student I found its approach of using first principles to introduce readers to the basics of intellectual property law very useful. From the first principles of copywright, trademark and patent law the book proceeds to give an insightful exposition of the developments of each of these areas of law in response to recent developments in the sciences. While some attention is paid to biotechnology in the patent section of the book, most of the work focusses on the impact of developments in intellectual property law as a result of information technology. Not only is this book timely but it also gives a very in depth analysis of these timely issues that I have not come across in other texts on the subject.I have just completed my LL.B at an excellent Canadian Law school.I specialised almost entirely in intellectual property law and found this to be my favourite text. Not just amongst my IP courses but amongst all the courses that it was my pleasure to take.If you are interested in IP and you want an understanding of it based Utilitarian first principles this book is an excellent resourse. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Readable propoganda
I just finished this book, and I disagree with the previous commentor. The book is highly readable. But it is clearly propoganda.I agree with the raters that give it low stars. If you want to learn about this topic, this is probably your worst starting point if you have any interest in a fair overview.

3-0 out of 5 stars An important book even if it is unreadable
I found reading Darknet like reading a novel by James Joyce - next to impossible. There is far to much jargon. The book reads like an extended blog. This book was clearly written for insiders - the people who are familiar with technology and working with it everyday. The problem is the issues raised in this book effect all of us.People who need to read and understand these issues will either misread it - as many of the reviewers here did, or fail to understand it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gives the people what they want to hear at artists' expense
This book makes me very very angry, and not in the way that the author wants. He clearly wants me to be angry at big media for keeping me from doing what I want with my content whenever and wherever I want to.He gives story after well told story of how the law stops people from doing clever and creative things like adding video to their Sunday sermons. But he completely ignores the artist.Without the artist, his big media has nothing to offer.Doing the things he advocates makes it impossible for the digital artist to earn a living in their primary medium. That is why the laws that he so wants to change are there in the first place. He wants you to forget that by telling one side of the story.I, as a digital artist struggling to make a living, cannot forget that side of things. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Save me....
Being in the copyright profession I have read numerous copyright and IP related books and this one is the worst one I have ever suffered through.I actually had Moser as a professor in college and thought I would give his book a try.I'm not sure why sinceevery student hated his class with a passion. But I figured surely his book would be somewhat better.....I was wrong. This book is no different than most of what is out there. It gives no new perspective, just rehashes the same old same old we have been hearing about for years.I had a hard time with this book keeping my attention. If you are completely new to copyright and IP one could benefit, but I think there are other books out there that are easier to read and give a great overview. If you are an IP "scholar" skip it completely. You will be bored to tears.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Musicians
This is a very useful and practical book especially for musicians like myself who want to know how their music is legally protected. Its written in an easy to understand style with lots of interesting examples. If you want to learn about copyright, this book is well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Informative Book
Music Copyright For The New Millennium is an extremely useful reference for anyone involved in the music industry. The book's author, David Moser, writes in a very easy to understand style and provides many examples and tips to illustrate how copyright law really applies to real life situations. It also clears up many of the common misconceptions musicians have about registering copyrights, co-ownership of songs, etc. The last chapter which covers the most currently controversial issues involving copyright and the use of music on Internet is especially informative. If this book existed when I started my career in the music industry, I would have been much more knowledgeable and avoided many problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent scholarly work
In reading this review, keep in mind that I am a lay person in the truest sense of the word, and so I brought no prior understanding to the subject of "cultural ownership" in reading this book. With that caveat, my review:
4-0 out of 5 stars long overdue, but something awry
How much we need a book that looks with unjaundiced eyes on the issue of cultural ownership and cultural appropriation. This is that book, but with a caveat:there is something slightly out of balance here, with the overbalance being in the form of abias toward an intellectual definition of ownership. Brown is a scholar, and a worthy one.As such, his virtue is a healthy skepticism toward all points of view, rather than an unreflective sympathy toward each.In a sense, he is a debunker, not a sequential believer, and this places him in a distinct relationship to his material that seems to this reader to militate against a sympathy toward that which cannot be explicated or analyzed by rational means.I know I am getting murky here. But the simple fact is that you cannot do justice to non-analytical traditions and points of view by the application of analysis. This is perhaps better explained by demonstration in a wonderfully subtle treatise by Kent Nerburn called Neither Wolf nor Dog.Here, in the guise of a novel or some sort of fictionalized non-fiction, a man who has lived with native people takes on the subject from a different angle. He, too, comes up a bit short by using a device that is perhaps too clever by half. But he gets me closer to an understanding by embodying conflicting points of view and expressing them with the conviction of different systems of belief.I suggest that the reader consider both these books as distinct halfs to a very difficult whole.Though the distance between them is great, it is in the space in the center that some true understanding of the problem of cultural appropriation and ownership will be found. ...
