5-0 out of 5 stars Brent Nelsen is a Norse God!
Wow! This man knows how to write a book on EU law! No one captures the flair and significance of Europe like he does. The chapter on "The Tragedy of Europe" brought tears to my eyes. Why did they not listen?! Why did this have to happen! Nelsen knows and he tells you. I recommend this book to all, not just Norse love gods, but to all humanity!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new here
The reason a book like this can be published is that there is an artificial separation between IR theory and international law in academia. There is little new here that hasn't been elaborated elsewhere in IR...oh I don't know, about twenty years ago.You would be much better off reading Oona Hathaway and Harold Hongju Koh's edited collection "Foundations of International Law and Politics."That anthology comprehensively covers all of the best scholarly perspectives on the nature and importance of international law.By the way, Posner and Goldsmith are reactionary hacks reifying the way they hope the international system will function.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does international law exist?
What is international law? Most international lawyers will tell you that there are principles of international legality that are larger than any specific treaty and these principles of legality bind states, sometimes even against their will; there is something called customary international law which is international law that evolved in a decentralized fashion as a matter of custom; and there are human rights norms that are part of customary international law and bind states even if those states never explicitly agreed to them.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
I was very disappointed with this book. While claiming to be an academic book, the text reads more like a neconservative, ideological condemnation of international law. The authors seem to be denying a substantial body of evidence, and that is not an issue if they had made their arguements using case study or better yet strong empirical study. I actually tend to agree with many of their points, but they are really not the first ones who are making these arguements. A whole school of thought in international relations has made these arguements for decades, and frankly with much more clarity than this book and highly more complex and fine logic.

5-0 out of 5 stars I bought this book because I like Harry Potter
Book arrived in good condition and in a timely manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Profitable Read
I used this book in a course on Early Judaism and Early Christianity, which I took as an undergraduate.Although one may read a secondary reader, there is nothing like reading a well-chosen sampling of primary texts - and the selections here are just that: well-chosen.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice serviceable volume of worthwhile texts
Professor Ehrmann has assembled a nice collection of Christian (orthodox and heterodox) writings from the period immediately following the New Testament and before the Council of Nicea. Although these are not brand new translations and all are readily available in other collections, the easy-to-read double column textbook format, the thematic way the texts are categorized, and the brief, helpful introductions make this anthology well worth its price. This volume and Ehrmann's other anthology THE NEW TESTAMENT AND OTHER EARLY CHRISTIAN WRITINGS are essential companions to his THE NEW TESTAMENT: A HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION TO THE EARLY CHRISTIAN WRITINGS.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Harvard Revisionism
According to this author Communism and the Soviet Union was brought down because of one man.Although a lot of people give credit to one man the man he lists is not the one.Apparently Reagan is just a footnote in the fall of communism because he barely gets a mention in the fall of communism chapter.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Detail of Topics Relating to International Politics
I had to purchase this book as a second book for a class I had taken. This book helped cover many of the topics I had to study and this book did a better job of describing several topics relating to nationalism, imperialism history of international politics, foreign policies, international law and organization and human factors in international politics.I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to learn the basics or even get more indepth details on certain topics of international politics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very good content marred by poor editing
A small number of reviewers were impressed by this work and that accolade is understandable and, for the most part, well warranted.I found Mr. Stopford's book was a comprehensive and detailed discussion of the arcane field of maritime economics and finance.I believe that anyone interested in this field, particularly maritime attorneys, ship financing brokers, maritime finance department representatives, ocean carrier finance departments, and other players will find it very useful. However, I regret that I cannot give this work five stars. The volume I purchased contains far too many spelling and grammatical mistakes, no doubt due to poor editing by Routledge. These spelling and other errors are not just small mistakes that can be overlooked. There are far too many distracting errors that greatly undermine the usefulness of the book.At times, I found it very difficult to even follow the book's lessons because spelling and grammatical errors made it hard, if not impossible, to determine what lesson Mr. Stopford was trying to impart to the reader. It's a shame such a good book's lessons were marred and undermined by such shoddy editing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Shipping
It is the Bible of Shipping, a must for anyone interested on the Maritime World

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever on Maritime Economics

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction
An excellent introduction to International Human Rights. I enjoyed the extensive bibliography and the objectivity (not neutrality) of the author's commentaries.

4-0 out of 5 stars all bark no bite
This book describes in great detail the instruments that exist to codify and protect human rights but which illustrates all too clearly the problem of inadequate enforcement instruments and procedures. The "law" empowers the UN or other bodies to "do a study" on complaints of non-compliance or violations. The creation of so many of these tools has been so politicized as to make many functions of the laws and treaties virtually useless and sometimes, apparently, contradictory (or at least open to debate and interpretation). What good is a "thorough study"? With no teeth, no authority and a backdrop of outside interfering factors (economic and political especially), these "norms" might be interpreted as existing in name only. In a section on gross violations of human rights and the UN Charter, one reads, "The required magnitude of the concept of `massive' or `gross' violations may also gradually require a lower threshold of severity as the international community becomes less tolerant of what is lawful behavior under the Charter. Viewed in this light, the human rights provisions of the Charter are `elastic clauses' whose expansion is tied to the evolving standards of international legality and decency."
3-0 out of 5 stars In depth but HORRIBLE to read
International Human Rights in a Nutshell does one thing correctly: It spells out the law in clear, black and white language on human rights and some of the formations of the UN, EU, American System, and African States. On the other hand it is EXTREMELY hard to read as a book because all of the citations are put right in the middle of the reading; as such it doesn't flow at all. It still remains a very definitive reference that any scholar on human rights should have. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Why International Organizations Fail
International relations theory has long ago identified a subfield that deals specifically with the existence of international organizations - IOs in the jargon. This field has yielded relatively few insights, and is of little use to the practitioner. Scholars have proposed complex theoretical constructs - "international regimes" - to explain cooperation among states, but they have tended to treat international organizations as mere servants of states' interests, not as actors in their own right. They have very seldom opened the black box to describe what IOs are really like.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nonsense
This book is what happens when zealots with a political agenda try to mask their actions as being compassionate. There is deliberate twisting of Hague convention rules of warfare to fit their marxist utopian vision (NY defense lawyers, surprise surprise).Fortunately, judging from the other reviews here, they seem to be preaching only to the same, small clueless choir.I imagine that since the author is personally involved in the matter he has financial reasons to publicize the "torture".

5-0 out of 5 stars The Torture Papers:Road to Abu Ghraib
This is an excellent resource for any serious scholar or researcher dealing with the laws of war, the Iraq War or torture issues. It is a broad compilation of original source material, mostly post 9/11; with its depth (over 1200 pages), it may be too much for the casual reader (if so, try Torture and Truth, by Mark Danner), but for serious research, it is essential.
5-0 out of 5 stars Making Men Scream in Our Name
This comprehensive and current compilation makes clear that our government has sanctioned practices not only outlawed by international conventions against torture, to which we are signatories, but which discracefully echo the techniques of tyrants through the ages. The documentation will make it impossible for Americans to claim that they didn't know what is being done in our name. This work should be required reading for every citizen as our nation confronts an official policy that claims our only defense against terrorism is our own use of teror and torture. ... Read more
