5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting
The story of Auschwitz is often taught in today's schools as that of a concentration camp erected during the Second World War that witnessed one of the world's worst genocides - the slaughter of one million innocent Jewish souls.
5-0 out of 5 stars Harrowing and powerful
This book is a fascinating, enlightening, and moving history of one of the most infamous of the Nazi concentration camps. Rees doesn't just explain the history of the camp itself, he frequently ties it into the "big picture," the things happening elsewhere in the world and how they affected the camp, and sometimes vice versa. This big picture focus really makes the book, showing how everything in interrelated and how even the distant Allied nations affected Auschwitz's development throughout the war.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easily accessible and reader-friendly
This was my first attempt to learn about Auschwitz and I was very pleased with the book. The author explains the entire history of the camp without getting bogged down in any single aspect of the story. If you are a casual history buff like me, this book is a winner. The first-hand accounts of survivors and the SS men who worked at Auschwitz are amazing. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Book
This is a pretty good book for people concerned about possible deterioration of American civil liberties in the event of further successful 9/11-type attacks. It is almost impossible to amend the U.S. Constitution. So Ackerman proposes laws that could be enacted by Congress and states that would help do this. It should be read in conjunction with Richard Posner's Catastrophe, which makes a case for some curtailment of civil liberties, given the dangers of the age we live in.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Yale professor impressed with himself
This book spews the progressive line that judges should make laws and run the country.By proposing that war powers be taken over by a group of congress and ruled over by judges, he proposes that we all give up our right to vote and express ourselves to an unelected and unfireable federal judge.More of the same "we know better than you" pablum spewed by the socialist/communist/nambla movement. What is even sadder is that he is a professor of law and influences young minds in this capacity.Save your money. Why pay to read "I am smart and you are not".If so bright why has he never been able to get a real job in the private sector without the cushion of tenure.Buy a latte instead, more satisfying. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Proper Role for the Supreme Court
Given all the hoopla about whether the federal courts have exceeded their proper boundaries, including recent threats by House and Senate Republicans to retaliate for the Terri Schiavo decisions, it seems an opportune time to consider what is the appropriate role for the Supreme Court in our democratic pollitical system.Jeffrey Rosen's book should contribute mightily toward that end.Rosen writes as a George Washington University law professor for the law reviews; serves as legal editor of "The New Republic"; and manages to write important articles for general publications, such as his recent article in "The Atlantic" entitled "The Day After Roe."So he is very effective at explaining legal concepts for a general audience, for whom this book is designed.

5-0 out of 5 stars japanese= devil race
Japan has committed some of the world's worst atrocities in history (nanking massacre, unit 731, batton death march, comfort women, pearl harbor, ect..) and they still refuse to apologize, compensate, or make an accurate history in there textbooks. Why is Japan so cowardly and instead try to make their amends to their victims of the horrible crimes against humanity. No wonder people call Japan a "devil" race.

3-0 out of 5 stars Putting things into perspective
In response to the reviewer below, I must say that it isn't true that 99.9% of the Japanese do not know about the "rape of Nanjing," or that Japan has not apologized at all. We do know it and it's in our history textbooks as well, granted that we are not taught that part of history as much in detail as those in China or Korea. The Japanese government has also apologized on numerous occasions, the question of their sincerity aside. Partly abetted by the nationalist trend that is currently on the rise in Japan, a handful of historians are attempting to rewrite the history; however, it is absolutely wrong that the whole nation is completely ignorant of the matter. Any attempt to appeal to sensationalism or fervent patriotism just adds fuel to the fire.
1-0 out of 5 stars Japanese does not apologize at all!
I have to tell you that I am Korean and as people know we hate Japanese! Japan still state that the Japanese have not killed any Korean and Chinese and 99.99% of the population does not know anything about the horrible torture they did on Korea and China! Also, the Japanese states that Dokdo is their land when it has been owned by Korea for more than 6 centuries! So stop pretending to be apologizing Japan! You guys did that 5 times already! We won't get fooled agaiN! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars International taxation made understandable
This book makes international taxation easy to understand.
2-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy and superficial
This book was disappointing for three reasons. First, there are computational errors in the chapter on the foreign tax credit. Second, there are errors of fact in the summary of Aiken v. Commissioner on page 239. The author confused the roles of the Bahamian corporation and the Honduran corporation or, at the very least, doesn't adequately explain the relation between the two in this case. The case is only 2 pages long, which makes this slip inexcusable. Third, the author is capable of better. He openned his career with one of the most powerful critiques of the "substance over form" doctrine. This book, by contrast, reads like something that was tossed off in a week. Moreover, the work is out of date. Four years is an eternity in this fast-changing area of the law. Conduits are old-hat. The "limitation-on-benefit" clauses included in every US treaty since 1979 has killed them. Where is the chapter on dual consolidated losses and other double-dip transactions? Why does the author cite cases from the 1920s when there are more recent guidance on point? Etc. etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a Great Book
What a delight it is to read a book that simplifies the areana of international taxation. The author has written a book that is easy to digest and actually makes the topic interesting with practical examples. This book is well worth the purchase price.Well done! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
A must read for anyone interested in the private security industry and the new future of war!
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, but I fail to see the problems with privately owned militaries
This book details the present trend of private military firms and providers replacing state-financed armies in several key areas of national defense.Like most good econ students, before reading this book I was under the impression that armies had always been national entities and mercenaries were the exception to the rule.It was truly shocking to find out that the only century in the history of the world where the majority of soldiers were direct employees of states was the twentieth century.(Is it therefore a coincidence that the greatest and most destructive wars in the history of the world were fought in the twentieth century?Maybe)This book showed me that the most unquestioned public good, the military, might be better provided by the market than by the state.
5-0 out of 5 stars An great look inside the modern private military companies
P.W. Singer has written a very insightful and detailed look into the modernization and globalization of the private military firms. The private military firm is not a new concept but actually dates back thousands of years. These firms are better known under the more controversial name: mercenaries.
