A very useful book - whether you go to law school or not
I was seriously considering applying to the law school last summer, and this book was one of those that I purchased to read along with LSAT prep books. The book had specific cases lined up in order from easy ones to more complicated, and it hasquestions of the end of each chapter, so that you can test yourself and your udnerstanding of material and how it applies in the courtroom. Also, I liked the sense of humor of the author; it was very encoureging in the beginning, and then kept peeking throught the book.
Buy this if you want to waste your time
All of the E&E books I have read, especially this one, are disappointing. I guess they can be helpful if you haven't been attending class and need to learn the material for the first time. But I'm not sure why a student who has kept up in class would waste time with such a vague and introductory study guide. I recommend a more advanced, detailed and concise study guide. Also, the Q&As at the end of the chapters are too verbose for what they cover. Most of the answers are pages long, when they should be at most a few paragraphs, if not a few sentences.

If you are struggling in Civil Procedure, buy this book.
Personally, I found Civil Procedure was the most difficult class in my first year of law school.I purchases several secondary sources but none were as helpful as Glannon's book.Glannon's book teaches by taking its reader through series of exercises that start with the basics then build into complex problems.Each problem comes with well written, complete, and comprehendible answers.The book uses helpful diagrams for explaining confusing topics such as the sometimes-confusing relationship between subject matter jurisdiction, person jurisdiction, and venue. ... A Must Read!
An outstanding book that is as relevant today as it was over a century ago.In my opinion, this book should be read by every voting citizen.

Should be required reading in Washington, D.C.
What book is is important enough that I read it once a year? The Law by Frederic Bastiat. Written in 1848 as a response to socialism in France, this book essay is just as relevant today as it was then.

Not as good as I'd hoped
This book did not teach me nearly as much as I'd hoped.It gives a very superficial outline of a lot of topics, but somehow when I finished, I didn't feel like I'd learned anything.

a MUST for future law students
I have purchased a number of law-related books from Amazon, but this book is by far the standout of the bunch. It systematically covers all of the major topics covered in the courses offered at every law school in the US comprehensively, even explaining the case briefing process. This new edition incorporates actual case law, allowing you to sample the work done at law school before actual signing your loan check and taking the plunge. Dunham clearly explains all of the basic terminology and principles underlying the first year of law school, providing the law student-to-be a firm foundation and a peace of mind before starting classes. I recommend this book without reservation to ANYONE interested in law school or interested in bulking up on their knowledge of the substance and form of law in the United States.

First Interesting Textbook I Ever Read
I ordered this book as a requirement for an introductory paralegal course and was at first a little aprehensive about the books thickness.I started out knowing absolutely nothing about the law, the government, or the internal workings of the legal system.This book teaches the beginnings of modern law and the influences of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government.The basics of many common areas of law are also covered such as contracts, probate, property, torts, criminal law, family law, and many more.This book teaches a great amount of useful information in an easy to read and easy to understand format.Plenty of possible real life scenarios are used as examples as well as real cases to help you dive deeper into the subject you are trying to grasp.This is the first school textbook I've ever actually enjoyed reading from.Key terms are boldened for easier reference and studying.For anyone interested in learning about a variety of beginning law topics, it is definately an investment worth making. ... McElhaney's Magic
Classic McElhaney -- wisdom and wit together.The best at giving smart, efficient and practical advise.i already had McElhany's Litigation -- which i review before every trial.i have recommended him to my best friends who do trials.This is more of the same.

McElhaney's Trial Notebook
McElhaney's book contains all of the guidance one needs in order to prepare for trial.From practical guidance for organizing materials to inspirational passages on the formation of the theory of the case and argument, this book has it all.I prefer it to the Mauet book.

A "must have" for any up and coming young lawyer
This book was suggested to my Advanced Trial and Evidence class in lawschool.I decided to pick up a copy to see if it would really be worthwhile for my future practice since I want to litigate.It is excellent from what I have read so far.Many of us were shown or told how to do or say certain things in pretrial and trial litigation class.This book is not only a good reminder, but it has many other practical and entertaining ideas that I'm sure to use in my future practice.A "must have!" ... One of my favorite study aids
I love these Examples & Explanations books.The rules make sense when you can get decent examples, and these books do a good job of that.
Great book
Great book. Definitely doesn't cover every area of Torts that you're going to need to know for your course (IIED, false imprisonment, etc.). Get Gilberts or Emanuels or just use your class notes on this stuff though. Also: if your professor has a slightly different view on the rules (even if it's just a difference in semantics) use your prof's rules when working the Examples. Writing out your answers to the Examples throughout the semester will solidify your knowledge and you won't have to struggle to memorize the elements of each rule at the end of the semester.

BE CAREFUL WHICH EDITION YOU BUY!
The book is great as it is, no doubt, but the older editions do not have Products Liability in them, which is VITAL to your studies. Make sure you get the latest edition, which has two chapters on PL.

Interesting but out of date and missing many key terms
Of the numerous Spanish<>English legal dictionaries I use regularly, this is consistently the one least likely to include the terms I need. I suspect it's partly because this is an abridged edition, and partly because the sources that the author(s) cite include very few publications that are even remotely recent. Another problem: the entries generally provide narrative explanations rather than functionally equivalent terms. The explanations are cogent, clear, interesting, and often establish differences in meaning between different countries. However, this approach is not helpful if you're a translator trying to figure out the best English-language equivalent for a Spanish legal term or vice versa.

Diccionario Juridico not what I hoped for
As a US immigration lawyer, I was pretty disappointed with this dictionary.It had few of the terms I looked for.

A good start for analytical jurisprudence, but no more
Hart takes apart the legal positivism of Austin and acknowledges some validity in natural law theory.But Hart fails to connect the "minimum content of natural law" with his analysis of a "rule of recongition" that allows a legal system to exist.
Obligatory reading.
One of the highest achievements in the history of jurisprudence. Simple to read, complex to thoroughly grasp, written in clear prose but full of ideas. Previous familiarity with Kelsen and Austin should prove helpful to extract the most out of this book. You can follow it by reading Dworkin and Bobbio (sadly unavailable in English - his Teoria della norma giuridica and Teoria dell'ordenamento giuridico are as obligatory as Kelsen and Hart). a seminal text on legal philosophy and jurisprudence
One of the most important books written in the field of jurisprudence and legal philosophy.A must-read for anyone who wants to talk intelligently about the topic.Each of Dr. Hart's chapters has been the springboard for entire areas of discussion since its publication, such as law as a system of rules, the separation of law and morality, etc.After you finish this book, read Prof. Dworkin's critique in "The Model of Rules," 35 Univ.Chi.L.Rev. 14 (1967) (excerpted in "The Philosophy of Law") and Prof. Dworkin's "Taking Rights Seriously" to see how Hart's theories have affect jurisprudential scholarship since the publication of this text in 1961.Again, if one had to select the top thinkers in the field, it's Austin, Hart, and Dworkin. ... Good Book
I had Dr. Lyman in a class and I think he wrote a good book. He is detailed and provided me with alot of information.If you are into organized crime, not just mafia, get this book - it is a good resource.

Good effort
I just finished reading "Black's Law Dictionary," and I must say I disagree with many of the reviews on this board. I thought the story was fairly uninteresting and the characters one-dimensional. It started strong (the "animus capiendi" scene comes to mind) but it dragged in the middle and ended flat (too much time spent on the "year-and-a-day rule"). I will admit I thoroughly enjoyed the list of British Regnal Years in Appendix G. Good effort by the author, the up-and-coming Black, but just two stars from this reviewer.

Excellent book
I have used this dictionary for many years while I worked in a law firm in Argentina with relationships with multinatinal companies. Now that I am practising on my own I needed this book for the correct use of English legal term in my contact with internatinal clients. Great book.
