5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview
For newcomers to the philosophy of law and for anyone interested in legal reasoning and the difficult problems of jurisprudence, this book gives an excellent overview. The author discusses the history of the subject as well as giving a thorough discussion of modern developments. In addition, many references are given for readers who want to investigate the subject in more detail. The philosophy of law has become even more important in recent years due to the social tensions surrounding the Supreme Court of the United States as well as the difficult legal issues involved in nation building.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pragmatism that's reasonable.
What is law? How exactly do judges reason out it's kinks? Does it operate on presumtions of behaviourism or free-will? Why aren't lawyers or judges puzzled by these quandries? Posner seeks answers and ends up in a not-so-comforting place.4-0 out of 5 stars The polymath, Richard Posner, strikes again!
This book's analysis of the problems that confront judges when they decide cases is cogent, persuasive, and (without a dictionary) difficult to understand. However, if you can master the blended vocabulary of psychology, epistimology, and hermeneutics it is a brilliant tour de force that raises troubling questions about how to read foundational legal documents. A must read for legal scholars.-Kelly Whiting ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Criminal Justice in America: A Critical View
This book provides the most realistic, introductory overview of criminal justice in America that I have ever seen. As a witness, student, and teacher of issues related to this field for many years, I have been consistently dismayed by the shallowness and lack of substantive material found in other works of this type. As well as what one would expect from such a book (e.g., explanations of the law, police, courts, theories of crime, how it is measured etc.), Shelden and Brown portray how criminal justice is affected by the politics, economics, and ideological underpinnings of the wider society and how these larger social forces are translated into the lives of real human beings. They do an excellent job of dispelling many of the popular myths that have helped create definitions of criminality, as well as legitimate what the system does as a response (e.g., all gang members or drug users are threatening and, therefore, deserve imprisonment). Ultimately, they illustrate how law and the system it upholds benefit some (the well off) at the expense of others (the poor and disadvantaged). Their extensive efforts give us a critical, well researched account of a system that is in dire need of change. Alternative conceptions of justice and viable solutions for change are, in fact, what they leave us with at the conclusion of their book. I give this book my highest recommendations.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars World History and Legal Regimes
World histories are extremely difficult to do because it requires the historian to make broad, sweeping assertions about many different cultures concerning which the historian can never be an expert in each.As a specialist in Islam, I for one was sometimes left deeply dissatisfied by some of the sections focusing on Islam. This, in turn, made me question the nature of the analyses on areas concerning which I have no indepth knowledge such as in Spanish and Portugese empires.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blum is the Contracts Master
This is the best study aid I had in my first year.Blum's E&E helped me understand concepts as they came up, and was perfect for outlining at the end of the term.Buy it - you won't regret it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but I wasn't thrilled
Good book, but perhaps not the best for my course. I initially bought Gilberts and this book. Then I tried to order a different used study aid online and the seller sent me Emanuel's on Contracts, which ended up being the best study aid for Contracts, I thought. Back to the E&E: this book gives a good overview and a clear explanation. The Examples and Explanations are pretty good. However, I agree with the reviewer above that Blum is too vague in the Explanations. Just give us the answer (whether "yes," "no," or "could go either way")! I also have another complaint about the Explanations -- they're way too damn long! Get to the point! I sat there for 10 minutes reading a 4 page Explanation. It's ridiculous. I felt like I was reading High Court case briefs when I was reading the Explanations. I do like the fact that there are Examples that you can work, but Emanuels has Questions following each chapter as well that are more concise and to the point.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Contracts Essential

4-0 out of 5 stars A definite must read for students interested in law!
Jurisprudence can be an intimidating subject. This book will help you understand complex legal issues, whether you are a law student or an individual concerned with legal philosophy. This book is comparable to the Real Property Nutshell book. I read both books prior to taking my Propertyand Jurisprudence classes in law school. As a result, I was much betterprepared for the semester. Without a doubt, I recommend reading this bookbefore you take you Jurisprudence, which is most likely a required classfor your law school. ...
