4-0 out of 5 stars Holmes Reincarnate!
Supreme Court Justice and legal pragmatist Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote: "I always say the chief end of man is to form general propositions - adding that no general proposition is worth a damn." He also wrote: "Do not be bullied out of your common sense by the specialist; two to one, he is a pedant." Put these two quotes together and they describe Richard Posner's "Problematics of Moral and Legal Theory" perfectly!4-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent and illuminating book, if too long
In The Problematics of Moral and Legal Theory, Judge Richard Posner asks a critical question: can moral philosophy ever help the practice of law? Posner answers this question with a resounding no.4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but Unconvincing
Posner is always enjoyable to read and this book is no exception. Readers who are not current on discussions about moral philosophy and law will find Posner a lucid and accessible point of entry. However, my first reaction is Posner assumes Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hypocrite
This guy encourages activist judges. In other words, he wants judges to violate their oath of office.Translation? He wants judges to undermine your vote by playing legislator. He also wants judges to lie, because when they violate the oath of upholding the laws of the land, they are liers. Why don't we bend the rules and charge Duncan Kennedy for capital crimes without any facts, without any evidence of any kind and without any trial?Or does he want to delimit his anarchy? If so, who draws the line of demarcation?Duncan Kennedy?I think so.This guy is an egomaniac. He belongs with Charles Manson and Unibomber.I'm sure he would oppose activist judges who ignored Roe v. Wade.He just wants activist judges that are tolerated to the extent they are coterminus with Duncan Kennedy's agenda.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why do courts do what they do?
There can be no remaining doubt, after Gore v. Bush, that the U.S. Supreme Court is nakedly ideological. But so is every other court, and Duncan Kennedy explains why in this masterful summary of the decisively insightful critical legal studies movement. It just will not do, in the new millenium, to continue to deny the influence of ideology on judges when any hope for political progress depends on law and its institutions. We must at least carry on a good faith debate which honestly confronts the bad faith of judges. The critique is the place to start, and the movement deserves the attention of every person interested in honest discourse about the future of both law and politics. No single work available today is a better starting place for understanding the critique. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars just beginning
I'm new to Crime analysis but what I have read and been able to put to use, the information in this book is great. It doesn't go into depth but covers the many areas of crime analysis and gives a good bibliography. For beginners like me this is a great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Evaluation by a crime analyst

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - Highly recommend latest version !!
I was involved in an accident in January during a snowstorm. I did research alot of books about settling a car accident claim on my own without using a lawyer and that had good information regarding accidents. I ordered 2 books and this was by far THE BEST !! The latest version 1.0.5 had everything I needed about handling my claim on my own which saved me thousands of dollars that a lawyer would have charged. Plus it made me more knowledgeable about car accident and what to do in general. The secret forumla really works. I applied everything step by step like the book showed in a ver EASY to use format, you don't have to read alot of long winded garbage found in other books. This latest edition gets straight to the point. It tells you exactly what to do, how to do it and what you should expect when you settle. I cannot rave about it enough since I settled for $12,845.00. Never did I think I could have been awarded that much in the case but the book outlined things I never saw in the other book I purchased. I had more ways to get more money out of my claim than I ever imagined. The STEP by STEP approach also really one me over and the fact that there are REAL LIFE examples from the book that prove you can really do it yourself and keep more of your settlement. A third of your money does not have to go to lawyers it can go directly in your pocket. Again I cannot thank this book enough and I am so glad it is available !!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good General Information
This book is rather helpful in a general informative manner especially for those who have not had to deal with an insurance adjuster or the process one goes through to file a claim. It's easy to follow and refer back to as you heal and recover. It however lacks detail in how to best determine and justify the pain and suffering aspect of the claim under its "Secret Formula" section. This may be something the author could clarify and enhance more thoroughly in his next volume/edition.It does stress keeping very good, detailed records including a daily diary which is rather helpful. If you have been in a minor or medium accident, this would be a good resource to have along with other resources including insights from your own auto insurance agent.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book was huge help in settling my car accident
After one year of healing from my car accident, I finally settled with the other drivers insurance company on my own. I followed the book step by step, everything is listed in order for you to follow. I did;t have to go against my insurance policy, the book showed me that and many more hints which helped save me thousands of dollars from hiring a lawyer.

In this midst of heated, often poisonous, arguments about affirmative action, school busing, and race-based political redistricting, A. Leon Higginbotham Jr. provides a welcome voice of reason. The sequel to his acclaimed Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A primer for slavery during the colonial period.
In a matter of color discusses the legalities of slavery in the states of Virginia, New York, South Carolina, Georgia. and Pennsylvania during the colonial period. It reveals how laws contributed to inflicting injustice on millions of Americans, solely on the basis of their color. The State of Virginia, a model of agricultural and economic success, a leader for all the colonies played a major role inthe ultimate institutionalization of slavery.TheState of Massachusetts after numerous trepidations abolished slavery in 1783.The State ofNew York though not steeped in slavery exuded certain prejudices.Although "Free Blacks" might join the militia and buy real estate, Jews were barred from both.In South arolina, by 1708, less than 20 years after the decision to move from white indentured labor to black labor, black slaves out numbered white inhabitants. In the State of Georgia, the indentured slave system broke down. The need to increase the number of white residents and to assure an adequate and cheap labor supply caused the financing of transportation to Georgia of many free unindentured persons (called charity olonists)and granted them up to fifty aces of land.Another group of emigrants (called adventurers) paid their own passage and received up to 500 acres of land. In the State of Pennsylvania the destruction of slaverywas achieved to a great extent through the private actions of Quakers and Germans freeing their slaves and cajoling their neighbors to act likewise.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bedrock. Foundation.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to embark on the serious study of racial idealogy here in America, especially as it pertains to the law. Higginbotham's work is widely quoted and referenced in other booksthat I've read. This book forms the bedrock and foundation forunderstanding "how" and "why" it was necessary to forgea wedge between poor whites and blacks, who together, often conspired torunaway from their master, and how black Americans gradually moved from aposition of quasi-servitude to perpetual slavery. This book is phenonmenal. It truly is the bedrock of my collection of works on the subject. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great analysis of common strategic behavior problems
This is a great example of how the rigor of game theory can give startling insights into outcomes of common situations. Although I'm no mathematician or economist, all business people are at some point required to base their decisions on how they think others will behave. This book provides some great frameworks for structuring that thought process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique
Altough it's often just theory, is a unique book, rxpressing the Chicago school's view on law. Do not expect something you can use practically.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pathbreaking work of importance and clarity
This book popularizes and extends a new approach (non-cooperative game theory) to the economic analysis of law. Readable and concise, this book is a must for students and scholars wishing to understand the ways in which legal rules can be usefully modeled as non-cooperative games. As a professor in the discipline, I am awed by the important and brilliant scholarship presented in this book with superb skill. ... Read more
