4-0 out of 5 stars some useful advice
The book came out in 2002 and was certainly written before the events of September 2001. Certainly seems germane nowadays. It tries to systematically study terrorism. Its causes and its tactics. Needless to say, when I turn to the index and look up hijacking, none of the book's instances refer to the possibility of kamikazes. This is how we can tell that it waswritten before September 2001.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highlighting
I looked inside the book and there is aliitle bit of highlighting where info was found to be of some importance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book which should be read by all first responders...
This book gives you the vital information you need to perform your duties as a first responder as well asshowing security and safety managers what is expected of them also. The information is given in bite size chunks so as to aid in the retention of the material. The pictures and tables are very helpful in getting the key ideas across. The case studies of both the Oklahoma and first WTC attack are noteworthy for their detail. If you are responsible for the safety of persons or a first responder this is one book you should read and take to heart. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Battle of Alcatraz is a Great Book!
Ernest Lageson has written an outstanding and fast paced book on what many consider as the most daring escape ever from Alcatraz. Ernest has also written a sequel that I'm about half way through and it is great! Lageson's book is an excellent account of the 1946 Battle of Alcatraz. I highly recommend this book as a companion to the books written by Don Denevi and Phillip Bergen titled Alcatraz '46, and also Alcatraz a Definitive History of the Prison Years by Michael Esslinger. All of these books provide great accounts of this escape attempt. Lageson's father was one of the guards held hostage by the escaping prisoners. He offers readers a blow by blow skillful account of the events and a lot of information that had been told to him by his father.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting, Interesting, and Readable
Author Ernest Lageson provides us with an account of the 1946 attempted breakout at Alcatraz prison during which time his father was a guard at the institution. He provides the reader with the details of a well-planned attempt by inmates to vacate "The Rock".The best laid plans go sour for the strangest reasons, and this plan went awry because a guard decided to keep a key to the recreation yard in his pocket because he was to reuse it shortly instead of returning it where it belonged. The inmates were unable to locate the key and their plot was foiled. The author provides us with details of the personalities of the inmates involved and their frustration when things began to go wrong.Author Lageson was a schoolboy at the time, and he expresses his agony in not knowing whether his father was alive or not.Conflict between Warden James Johnston and his associate, Edward Miller, in resolving the takeover is gone into detail with Warden Johnston appearing as confused as to what to do to rescue the guards in the cell block and quash the uprising.According to the author, Johnston had his facts wrong, also, when providing details to the press.Having just visited Alcatraz last week I wanted to read this book and was able to visualize the inside of the prison.I found this book very interesting to read.I can't imagine a reviewer who found it to be boring.I would highly recommend the book to you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Criminal Justice in America: A Critical View
This book provides the most realistic, introductory overview of criminal justice in America that I have ever seen. As a witness, student, and teacher of issues related to this field for many years, I have been consistently dismayed by the shallowness and lack of substantive material found in other works of this type. As well as what one would expect from such a book (e.g., explanations of the law, police, courts, theories of crime, how it is measured etc.), Shelden and Brown portray how criminal justice is affected by the politics, economics, and ideological underpinnings of the wider society and how these larger social forces are translated into the lives of real human beings. They do an excellent job of dispelling many of the popular myths that have helped create definitions of criminality, as well as legitimate what the system does as a response (e.g., all gang members or drug users are threatening and, therefore, deserve imprisonment). Ultimately, they illustrate how law and the system it upholds benefit some (the well off) at the expense of others (the poor and disadvantaged). Their extensive efforts give us a critical, well researched account of a system that is in dire need of change. Alternative conceptions of justice and viable solutions for change are, in fact, what they leave us with at the conclusion of their book. I give this book my highest recommendations.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars There HAS to be better work on this matter
Whoever edited this book should REALLY rethink their profession. If you've already decided that you want to carry a handgun for self defense, you can skip the first 100 pages of this book.If you already know something about handguns, there's almost another 100 pages you can skip. All the information contained in this book on actually shooting a gun in self defense (tactics), you can fit into a pamphlet, while the most irrelevant, meaningless details of dozens of self-defense stories are elaborated on exhaustively.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well Rounded Book; More than Adequate Novice/Experienced
This book provides a great "once over" of handgun basics and is more than adequate for those who possess limited knowledge of firearms.Too often, someone will buy a gun armed (pun intended) with only bits and pieces of knowledge that he/she has picked up by reading magazines or what they have heard from their uncle who was in the army.If you feel as if there is any aspect of handguns that you don't understand, then you need to acquire a book authored by an expert that touches on all the issues."The Concealed Handgun Manual" does that, and Chris Bird knows handguns.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read prior to concealed carry!
This is an excellent book for people interested in concealed carry. It is not a how to shoot or tactical book, but rather discusses the ins and outs of concealed carry issues. Why might you need concealed carry, what happens in a given situation if you are unarmed vs. carrying, revolvers or semi-autos, a few basic tactics, and what happens after an incident if you must shoot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most important book on the presidency in decades
Skowronek has written a magesterial study of the American presidency, fundamentally reinterpreting it through a novel historical framework. His writing style is very dense, and often unclear - but the hard work necessary to understand him is well worth the effort.
4-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, but a tad dense
This is definitely a difficult book, and understanding certain critical passages may require several readings. In short, this is NOT a good book for an introduction to presidential politics and leadership. For a more readable and still highly regarded account, Neustadt's seminal work is a good choice. However, none of this is to say that Skowronek's book is not brilliant--it is, and reading it carefully is a very profitable experience and will enhance anyone's understanding of the presidency, agree with Professor Skowronek or not.Through all the technical references, Skowronek proposes a paradigm for assessing presidential leadership:Reconstruction, Disjunction, Articulation, and Pre-emption, all of which are based on the nature of the government and its commitments (vulnerable or resilient) and on the president's relationship to that regime (opposed or affiliated).Reconstruction results when presidents are opposed to a vulnerable regime--here are the "great" presidents:Lincoln, FDR, and Reagan, for example.Affiliation with a vulnerable regime produces Disjunction.Articulation results from affiliation with a resilient regime. And Pre-emption is the product of opposition to a resilient regime.Of course, this merely scratches the surface of Skowronek's argument, for which he argues quite well and which he approaches from a fairly historical perspective.I highly recommend this for anyone wishing to gain a deeper, fuller understanding of presidential leadership, especially in considering how much a president's skills affect what type of leader he is and how much circumstances shape his presidency.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
I read this as part of a course (taught by the author himself) in mysophomore year of college. Skowronek is I think to be applauded for hishistorical approach to presidential politics, and for his style of writing:it seems more as if youre reading a story than a political science book.Time and time again, Skowronek comes back to his thesis and main themes(legitimacy and presidents ability to correctly understand and manipulatetheir historical moment. The book never loses focus as Skrownek discussesdifferent presidents or as he tells stories about a particular president. And hes done his research really really well. In particular his use ofpresidential quotes is very very impressive. Numerous times he givesexamples of Presidents who attempt to build political legitimacy usingwords that fit very well into Skowronek's conceptual framework("preserving foundations", recovering old sacred truths, continuing work that has already begun). The problem with Skowronek's bookis that I think, given the sort of analysis hes doing here, its not verynaunced. Im sure for example, articulation presidents often distancedthemselves from their predecesors in some form or another. Some may nothave a problem with this: after all S. is trying to prove his point andprove it well. However I thought at times that the book could have beenmore nauanced. Just my thoughts....OHH BUY THE BOOK! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the inexperienced
As a person with no experience in fingerprinting, I found that I spent more time decoding what the book was saying than actually learning the information. You definitely don't want to learn how to classify or file prints with this as your main tool. The other sections are more helpful if you're looking for a basic understanding. There are a lot of typos and the wording is sometimes confusing. If you are experienced and need a quick reference, or a beginner that doesn't need details, then I think this book will suffice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand
This book is in simple terms making a difficult material easy to understand.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars It ain't a pretty world
I'm an unabashed Bowden fan -- I'd read his grocery list if he published it.This isn't his best book (that honor would lie, in my mind, with either "Blood Orchid" or "Down by the River") and he does things a little differently here, such as using more traditional storytelling devices, such as suspense. That said, I read it straight through, hanging on every word. This is a dark and depressing book -- the kind that made me question not only what kind of world we live in, but also what I even know about the world today.Throughout his entire career, Bowden has worked hard, finding characters such as Joey O'Shay, the undercover drug "warrior" in this book-- and I get the impression that he devours their insanity, insecurities and internal demons and can only try and purge that burden by writing books that the rest of us will then wonder about long after we've finished reading them. There are two main reasons to read this book:One, because it's really good. And two, because smart journalists and great writers such as Bowden are a rarity and deserve to be supported whenever they share their thoughts and experiences with the rest of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Shadow in the City:Confessions of an Undercover Drug Warrior
In the beginning chapters I judged the style as a bit aloof. It does not take long, however for Charles Bowden's wordcraft and narrative style to hook you into the surreal life Joey O'Shay leads.
5-0 out of 5 stars In Dubious Battle
In January of 1935, shortly before Steinbeck sent off his manuscript of "In Dubious Battle," he wrote, "But man hates something in himself. He has been able to defeat every natural obstacle but himself he cannot win over unless he kills every individual. And this self-hate which goes so closely in hand with self-love is what I wrote about. This books is brutal.I wanted to be merely a recording consciousness, judging nothing, simply putting down the thing.I think it has the thrust, almost crazy, that mobs have."What does this have to do with Bowden's latest book?Everything and nothing.

4-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE BOOK TO REVIEW FOR THE EXAM!!!!!
Unfortunately, I purchased this book way to late!!! If you are bad with math...this is the book for you, it has many of the same questions as in the test. The reading part is also the same! It's great!!! I recommend it 100%.I still do not know if I passed but trust me you need this book!
1-0 out of 5 stars Just as bad as the 10th edition ....
This has all the same sample questions and practice exam questions as the 10th edition. However, it did clean up many of the 10th edtion's editing mistakes, though some mistakes are still present. There are also a few incorrect problems in there as well, so watch out.Overall, this book is poorly edited, but it is the only thing I have found to use for studying purposes. If you already have the 10th edition, don't waste your money on this garbage.Check the library or in-store model first, don't buy unless you absolutely have to.

1-0 out of 5 stars SAME Practice tests as found in ARCO's Special Agent Deputy U.S. Marshal by Eve STEINBERG(10th edition)
This brand new edition by MORGAN has the same two practice exams as the 2000 ARCO's Special Agent Deputy U.S. Marshal by Eve STEINBERG(10th edition) Do not be fooled by the 2006 "new" edition, different "author" or title. Were it not for the preview pages of the table of contents, one would have been fooled in thinking that there are THREE practice tests, when in fact there are only two full OLD practice tests from 2000.Its so-called third practice test is not another TEA practice test, but a descriptive self-inventory, which was already included in the Steinberg 10th edition. If you are thinking of buying this to get new practice tests, don't waste your money.A rearrangement of questions, and elimination of some information does not justify this edition under a new name and author.Don't waste your money. ...
