4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for First Time Assessment Center Prep
The first thing that struck me about this book is the how close the testing process covered resembles my department's testing process.
3-0 out of 5 stars Flawed...
I just received this book in preparation for an upcoming Lieutenant's test on my department. The book has some very good sections e.g. preparing for the oral interview. It helps the reader avoid some of the common mistakes made during this very crucial step of the promotional process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes an urgent and serious topic head-on
The Color Of Guilt & Innocence: Racial Profiling And Police Practices In America by law enforcement veteran Steve Holbert and attorney Lisa Rose is a highly readable discussion of the all too common practice of racial profiling in America. Discussing data collection and analysis programs used to help determine whether racial profiling takes place, issues of civil liberty, police reaction to accusations, and much more, The Color Of Guilt & Innocence takes an urgent and serious topic head-on without losing itself in excessively confusing terminology or philosophy. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally somebody gets it
I have been a cop for 17 years. I was skeptical of another book on racial profiling that bashes cops. A friend of mine gave me this book to read for training, and i was very surprised that someone finally got it.There is so much about this topic that the public does not know. This book finally gives a cops perspective and tells why, in most cases, cops are not racist.Every person in America racially profiles, and this book explains why. I was fascinated by the in depth discussion in one chapter that explains racism. The book also opened by eyes to the harm the victims suffer at the hands of some cops. I think everyone has something to learn from this book. The book finally sheds some light on data collection and why it will not work. Instead of re-hashing the same old "solutions," the book actually explores some innovative new ideas that should be implemented by law enforcement. Thanks for covering this subject in a whole new light!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible and comprehensive work on this subject
I am an avid reader on the subjects of civil rights and racial profiling. This book, simply put, is incredible. I thought I had a firm opinion on the subject, but after reading this book, I really see that there are two sides to this complicated issue. All is not always what you see. This book covers every possible aspect of this subject, and delves into areas that I have not seen covered before. I had never before considered the side of law enforcement, nor did I understand what was really going on behind the scenes. I also never really viewed this subject outside of the "black and white" issue. The authors reminded me that racial profiling effects every one of us. Now I can more effectively become involved in the fight towards racial justice with a more focused understanding of why racial profiling occurs and what can be done to stop this practice. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ministry of love
In The COINTELPRO Papers, Ward Churchill and Jim Vander Wall chronicle decades of disruptive and secretive attacks by the FBI on those with whom they do not feel ideologically alignedXnamely, those who are a threat in any way to capitalism or to the current power structures within the United States and abroad. The authors contend that the FBI has launched seemingly countless attacks upon peaceful and law-abiding organizations and their members for no reason other than their philosophical deviance from the political mindset of the American status quo. The authors chronicle case after case after case of the FBI engaging in illegal and unsettling practices and activities in their ongoing efforts to discredit any organization or individual espousing radical or alternative socio-economic views.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes Desert Is Better Than the Meal
Ward Churchil and Jim Vander Wall have done an outstanding and meticulous job in assembling and explaining the FBI's secret war on dissent in America, no wonder America is plagued with criminals, the supposed "good guys" are all out on black bag jobs committing their own crimes!!5-0 out of 5 stars If history repeats itself we are all in trouble
For readers who may have forgoten what can happen when government intelligence agencies are given free rein, legally or not, to investigate and harass American citizens who question governmental policies, this is the primary source for a reminder.Tracing the long history of political repression in this country from the 1950s through the Vietnam era and the Civil Rights movement and examining recent FBI activities, this book belongs on any reader's shelf that values political freedom.Read more

In this appropriately named "Checklist and Field Guide" Vernon J. Geberth distills the complexities of criminal investigation into a series of helpful checklists and charts. The reading is informative (though not always engaging) and he provides a necessary resource for law enforcement personnel as well as a helpful guide for authors writing books involving criminal investigation or police procedures.

5-0 out of 5 stars A blend of history and insights on the secretive law enforcement agency
If you want to be a member of the U.S. Secret Service you must have Henry Holden's To Be A U.S. Secret Service Agent: it provides a blend of history and insights on the secretive law enforcement agency, from how it recruits and trains to the specialized equipment it uses to protect heads of state. To Be A U.S. Secret Service Agent is the only book to combine a history with coverage of career options and paths and as such as a top recommendation.
5-0 out of 5 stars I would highly recommend this book
As a U.S. Secret Service UD applicant, I would highly recommend this book.As a former teacher and peace officer, I would recommend this book be in every middle school, high school and university.Mr. Holden has explained, through words and photographs, the application process, the training, and duties of the Secret Service agent, uniform division officer, and other members that comprise the most professional and honorable division of American law enforcement. As an applicant, it helped me learn about the position that I was applying for and helped me articulate my understanding to the agents I interviewed with. The information that I obtained in this book helped me score 97% on the tests and make it to panel. Thank you Mr. Holden for writing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for-kids book on the Secret Service
As the leading civilian authority on the Secret Service, I highly recommend this great book on the agency by Mr. Holden. nice pictures and easy-to-read text, as well. Two thumbs up!

I highly recommend this book and On Combat too.

Editorial Review

Jack Maple was a former NYPD transit cop who found himself appointed deputy commissioner in 1993. Upon assuming his new office, the erstwhile Don Quixote of urban crime led a charge to reform the way cops go about their everyday business--namely, busting the bad guys. Amazingly, Maple succeeded, and New York's crime rate--previously spiraling out of control--took a 39 percent tumble within two years of his ascension to policymaker, with murders alone falling an astounding 50 percent. 5-0 out of 5 stars Makes a number of good points
While I certainly do not agree with everything Ralph Peters says in this book, he clearly raises a number of issues and has useful things to say about many of them.
5-0 out of 5 stars A serious book on political philosophy
Peters' is the high-quality thinking on geopolitical and military matters. Having written much the same unpopular truths over the years for Russian audience, I can only admire his courage and honesty.
4-0 out of 5 stars A bit preachy
Ralph Peters knows his history and has a great deal of expertise on foreign policy, geo-politics, and military strategy. You will find much to think about here - if you can wade through the sections where he rambles and gets side-tracked on some off-topic discourse. This book is comprised of a series of lengthy essays Mr. Peters wrote over the past several years as reactions to world events, and some of his observations are a bit dated and proved to be incorrect. To his credit, he acknowledges this in the introduction and explains that he made the decision to leave his opinions just as they were at the time and not update them. He is very good at what he knows. The chapter on understanding the two basic types of terrorists, what motivates them, what causes them to kill, and how each must be defeated is excellent and particularly relevant to today's conflict. My main problem with Mr. Peters (and the thing that made this book a sometimes difficult and laborious read) is that he tends to ramble at times and venture into topics, such as religion, about which he is perhaps not as qualified to speak as authoritatively as he is about foreign policy and geopolitics. When he strays off these topics, his biases show and undermine his credibility. It's almost as if he thinks he knows too much about too many things, and can't resist letting the reader know he knows it. He also tends to pontificate at times and comes off as if he is smarter than and could have done a better job than any presidential administration in the history of our country. Hindsight, of course, is 20/20. ... Read more

Judge Pollak vacated and superseded the January 2002 opinion cited by another reviewer. Two U.S. Courts of Appeals have since held fingerprint evidence admissible.U. S. v. Mitchell, 365 F.3d 215 (3d Cir. 3004) and U.S. v. Crisp, 324 F.3d 261 (4th Cir. 2003).The Mitchell court rejected Cole's view that fingerprint evidence is not admissible under U.S. Supreme Court criteria for the admission of scientific opinion evidence.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of history of finger mark matching
The book gives a historical overview of fingerprinting and why anthropometry was more inefficient for the police in the beginning of the 20th century. It furthermore is somewhat critical on the conclusions that are drawn in this field, and the limitations that exist. Also it discusses possibilities that suspects are not found in the database of fingerprints whereas the fingerprints are actually in it. 3-0 out of 5 stars Cole's views should not be taken as gospel
Simon Cole makes good points, BUT it is important to note that he is a polemicist and not a fingerprint expert.Read more
