5-0 out of 5 stars Assistant Visiting Professor, Southern Illinois University
As part of a commmittee including active fire chiefs, we reviwed this book for use in the Southern Illnois University program for Fire Service Management. We found the breadth of subjects covered to be excellent. We also found that the "real world" type problems presented at the end of each chapter were excellent opportunities for class discussions and/or essay tests. The book was compared against a general local government HR text and found to be superior for a fire service setting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Firefighter's Do Notread !!!
This book is not for firefighter's or fire officer's. This title is very misleading. A more appropriate title would be, Human Resource Managers Manual. This book was put on my departments Lt. and Capt. promotional test strictly by its deceiving title. I asked our Chief to read it and he agreed that it is horrible. I will never read another book or article by Steven T. Edwards.

1-0 out of 5 stars Read like a cookbook.
I bought this book as a text book for a college course. I was extremely dissappointed because the style in which Mr. Edwards writes is an excellent example of what a text book should not be.I wondered if I had bought the clif note version. I felt this book was written like a cookbook. It left a bad taste in my mouth, and I wanted to throw the recipe away.I felt that Mr. Edwards book was an excellent example of "easy way out" management. He limited the examples in the text to only the those he used, and left an impression that all of his decisions were correct. I would like to ask Mr. Edwards if he felt he was successful in running the PG County Fire Dept. using the discussed methods.I would also ask if he felt the Dept. was in better shape after his tenure as Chief. If you are interested in learning to manage fire service personnel you may want to read this book, because of the limited information on the topic. But if you set it down after the first ten pages dont be suprised, I have seen toast that wasnt as dry as this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Flavorful, fast-paced and entertaining
Okay, the title is a bit much. But I enjoyed this book tremendously. Some of the criticisms point to the elements I liked best. The routine cases, how they were approached, and the results were a revelation to someone who has no real idea of police work except what I've seen on "Cops" (constant action and crisis!).There was a new story on every page, and I wound up reading until 1 a.m. on a work day because I just couldn't help reading "one more page".The descriptions of the surroundings, the characters, the sounds and smells of the settings, conjured up a real sense of being there.I was fascinated by the character faults and virtues of the people in the book, as Atkinson tried to remain true to McCain's philosophy that most people aren't entirely good or bad.As a resident of the area, I finally understand the gang wars that were taking place when I was growing up (I remember the old Boston Record American newpaper with the crime scene photos splashed across the front).I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who lives in the Northeast, and to others who'd like a glimpse into how Boston politics are practiced in every profession! ... Editorial Review

There's no shortage of books on the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama, which resulted in the capture of Manuel Antonio Noriega. Yet Read more

Reviews (5)

3-0 out of 5 stars a fascinating portrayal of an unusual event in U.S. history
this book would be better sub-titled "The True Story of an Unusual Indictment of a Foreign Ruler," considering it only devotes a handful of pages to the actual "manhunt" for Noriega. that being said, Harris tells a great story of the weird saga of Manuel Noriega, the cheap thug who was the de facto ruler of Panama for awhile. 2-0 out of 5 stars A Highly Inventive History
I know several of the characters in Harris' book, and he has invented a lot of their colorful talk and dress. In just one example Raymond Takiff ("Roy" in the index!) was from West Philadelphia, Overbrook Park, just south of the Main Line, not South Philadelphia.Harris makes Takiff, a Villanova graduate and former history teacher who considered himself an intellectual, sound like a cheap South Philly hoodlum.Takiff was a snappy dresser, in the South Florida style (Silk, please, not Rayon!), and the scene with the shorts and brogans was a grotesque invention.Harris also misspells Takiff's daughter's name! Most details on the other lawyers involved are also highly imaginary. As an indication of the sloppy job Harris did, he misses some colorful items, too, such as Takiff maneuvering the judge in the trial of the 91 year old woman accused of cocaine possession into helping the defendant out of the witness stand!4-0 out of 5 stars Finally...the whole story about the Noreiga/North fiasco.
In 1989 the United States sent American troops to arrest General Manuel Antonio Noreiga, Panama's highest military officer.Trying a foreign leader for events that took place in his own country as violations of U. S. law was previously unheard of in American history.Stopping the Medellin Cartel was a major step in slowing down the influx of illegal Cocaine and other drugs.Harris unravels the complicated story with wit and verve, very colorful language, marvelous humor, and a sense of excitement.Harris makes the FBI, DEA and CIA agents appear to be involved in a bumbling, amusing, tragedy.Oliver North was engaged in clandestine arms dealing and nobody seemed to know what anybody else was doing. Here is a true crime story on a grand scale with betrayal, murder, arms dealing and drug smuggling that reads like good fiction. Here are the explanations of the Reagan administration's dealings with the Sandinistas and Contras; names that were always in the news in association with cover-ups and destroyed evidence by government agencies, though the public didn't really know what was going on.Harris has done a superior job of investigative reporting to create an impressive chronicle of the events leading up to the invasion of Panama and the arrest of Manuel Antonio Noreiga. He made history come alive and really gave me a much better understanding of the events that were in the news for so long, and the role and fate of each of the historical players in this drama of our time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars America's multiple addictions
Russell Crandall's "Driven by Drugs" is an excellent guide to understanding the impact of U.S. policies and the current chaotic situation in Colombia. The author provides background on U.S.-Colombian relations and an overview of Colombian society to help the reader contextualize recent events. While violence in Colombia is rooted in that country's stratified social relations, it is America's "War on Drugs" that now might rip apart what little remains of Colombia's civil society.5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Book
Russell Crandall has broken new ground. His dynamic focus on U.S. policy during the Samper Administration (1994-1998) and the Pastrana Administration (1998-2002) provides a powerful insight as to why Colombia is the third largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid in the world after Israel and Egypt. The author also cautions of the many political landmines in the road ahead.Crandall is a tier-one academic and a polished writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A straightforward history
Driven By Drugs: U.S. Policy Toward Colombia by Russell Crandall (MacArthur Assistant Professor of Political Science, Davidson College) is a straightforward history of American relations vis-a-vis Colombia with particular emphasis on the last decade. An exhaustively researched, scholarly presentation surveying U.S. drug dependency, and its relationship with the roots of violence and guerilla groups in Colombia, as well as the volatile political situation revolving about who owns the land and what is to be done with it, Driven By Drugs is a fascinating, insightful, revealing, and greatly disturbing account of the troubled interaction between these two nations. Driven By Drugs is an important contribution to academic and community library International Studies supplemental reading lists and reference collections. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, slightly out of date
This book was great for research purposes. Understanding gangs and their signs was pretty much on point. The only complaint would be that it's from the 80's. Lot of the gang MO is still true but there is a section about "Stoner" Gangs, which are 80's metal heads. Basically if you wear a band shirt, jeans and sneakers you fit the dress of a Stoner gang. Their graffiti is band names like Rush and Twisted Sister (this should tell you the age of the book) and "Satanic" things. Also that car clubs are gangs but they don't have a certain style of dress or have graffiti. If you want a good laugh you can read it but for research or academic purposes skip over those sections.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good practical knowledge for training cops
I bought this book probably in '87 at Long Beach Uniform. It had good information at the time of publication concering the gangs in the greater LA area at the time.Gang associations, graffiti, turf, activity, and turfs are covered.Crimes known to be done by certain gangs are covered, heredity of the latino gangs, tattos, etc. are both covered and photos shown.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a great planning book!
More often than not, we look to business and industry for answers to fire service problems. Most business strategic planning models have limited application to our profession.Mark Wallace has developed a fire department specific model that provides an excellent template in identifying medium and long range strategic planning issues. I have read this text and highly recomment it to the proactive planners of the future. ... Read more
