2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing you probably already didn't know
I tend to agree with "PNC2007" on that this is a very generic book on law school admissions and survival.I'm not a law school student (yet) that's why I was looking for some information.Like many For Dummies books, the book tries to be humorous and claims to give you the "insider secrets," but there's really absolutely nothing "secret" about what the author dispenses in way of advice.Want to get into a good law school? She says you need a high LSAT score, a high GPA, a good essay, and good recommendations.Duh.Don't we already know this?I mean, if you didn't already know this, you really shouldn't be even thinking about attending law school. The author spends two or three chapters letting you in on some studying tips. You know what? These ain't tips; they just tell you to "do your homework; organize your studying schedules; study hard."Duh, again. If the message is that law school is really tough, you don't need a 350-page book peppered with bogus humor to learn that.
4-0 out of 5 stars Regal Legal Boook
John Ventura gives very strong and detailed information for many legal wheelings and dealings. He covers may situations the average person might find him/herself in, and the majority of this book is outstanding. The only problem is that I try to absorb all this knowledge, but it's so detailed that you have to read it more than once to keep it in your head.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read, but should look into other topics...
This book was a good read.It will help calm your nerves before entering the first year of law school.Law 101 was also and excellent book. However, in retrospect, I would concentrate on learning about getting a job (resumes, interviewing, cover letters.)You will be expected start this right around finals time of your first semester. Most people were worried about their first finals and got a late start on this.It is easy to fall behind and once you are there it is difficult to catch up.Most people found that the job search was last on the priority list until after first year classes were over. You will be well ahead of the game if you are prepared for a job search. It will allow you to concentrate more on studying. While the first sumeer jobs aren't crucial they can provide good experience for landing second summer jobs. Also, reading about different law specialties is a good idea. You don't have to know what you want to do going into law school but the sooner you have a direction the better. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but new lawyers need to be effective advocates
Walton's book is OK, but if you want to become an excellent advocate, you should read Keith Evan's Common Sense Rules of Advocacy for Lawyers."This is a great book for new associates and 3Ls.3-0 out of 5 stars Um...yeah
This book is well written and has a lot of do's and don'ts of the practical legal world. The author speaks a lot about what to do on the job and frequently gives a few good ideas. A huge percentage of those ideas are supported by real-life anecdotes from various legal professionals. The major problem I had with it, is that throughout almost the entire book I kept finding myself saying, "Yeah, duh." As just one of many many potential examples, there is an anecodote about a summer clerk who goes into a firm, whines that he needs his own office and is allowed to use the office of a lawyer who is out sick. The lawyer wants to connect to her computer from home, so the summer clerk is told he absolutely cannot touch the computer. The clerk does so anyway thus preventing the lawyer from being able to connect to the computer and gaining for the clerk the contempt of everyone in the office. There are a lot of little stories like this where somebody does something just blatantly stupid (and a smaller number where somebody does something blatantly correct). Some of the stories are amusing but are almost always connected to advice that seems really obvious. If you think you have really poor judgement then by all means read this book.3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book, but mostly common sense.
This book was very informative as far as a typical 9-5 workday of a lawyer, but most of her strategies are common sense. Seriously, anyone who doesn't know business manners shoudln't be a lawyer anyway. Its common sense to dress appropriately, to never crack raunchy jokes to a partner, or to speak of how hot another attorney's wife is. If you have any common sense, spend your money on a more practical book with better advice or educational value. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful.
I found this book to be incredibly unhelpful. The author does not offer good strategies for approaching the exam, and includes essays from a range of jurisdictions, which can be confusing at worst and just unhelpful at best.i thought the Adachi books were much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS is the book to use
I recently used this book to prepare for New York's bar exam essays. This book gives you a viable succinct format for writing bar exam essays. I took the BarBri workshop and this book was far more useful. It has many practice questions and essays (includes most states). For those of us who do not have the luxury of time to spend in endless workshops, this book allows you to learn the methodology at your own pace, and practice, practice, practice.Definitely worth every penny of the price. ... Editorial Review

Thanks to TV cop shows, most Americans can probably recite the Miranda warnings, but do they know when the warnings do--and do not--apply? Tort reformers cite the $2.7 million in punitive damages a jury awarded a little old lady in Albuquerque when the cup of coffee she had set between her legs spilled and scalded her. These crusaders against "excessive" damage awards do not usually note that the trial judge reduced the award to $480,000, or that the coffee was 20 degrees hotter than competitors' coffee.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Law 101: Everything You Need to Know About the American Legal System
This is a great introduction to the different fields of law. This uses recent cases that show now only how the legal field works, but how it has run amuck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good so far
Before my first year classes started I had read most of the parts that were applicable. The reading definitely gave me some sort of foundation and framework for understanding all the information they throw at you in law school. Some of the reading is a little dry, but compared to some Marshall opinions you'll read for class, this book's a breeze.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heavily academic in dry, concise, and reasonable format
For what it worth, the book is intended for classroom study. It is dry, dense, and concise with heavy emphasis on the history of law and its role in society. The author has relied on few anecdotes to demonstrate how the law is applicable to dispute resolution. Those linger along many chapters and require the reader to follow closely each anecdote in order to discern the applicability of the law.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
This book does little more than expound the IRAC system, which will get you killed on exams.A much, much better book to get is "Getting to Maybe."Don't waste your time or money on this worthless waste of paper and ink.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read this before taking the exam
Professor Whitebread has been teaching for a long time, and of course, he has been to law school as a student. These simple tips will help you prepare to write a better exam answer. These simple tips will also make the difference is how you finish in the class.
4-0 out of 5 stars Short, Sweet, and Effective

3-0 out of 5 stars Games don't recreate the full feel of real LSAT problems
There are approximately 44 original games in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
This book is amazing! It breaks down the different types of logic games into different sections, gives you the best way to tackle it and then gives you lots of chances to practice. This is a definite buy if you are preparing for the LSAT's.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but too general
I bought this book looking for a detailed method for solving the riddle that are LSAT logic games. Instead, I found a book that can tell me how to identify the types of games, but leaves me without straightforward methods for solving the problems. A better strategy would be to simply do as many of the offical LSAT problems as you can before you take the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best starter
This is the best little book I have found for those wanting just a basic starter in the law.It is concise and clear, a good overview for the summer before law school or those considering applying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on the study of law
This is a book, along with _Bramble Bush_, by Karl Llewellyn, and _Introduction to Legal Reasoning_, by Edward Levi, that all prospective law students ought to read.Ms Nygren's method is to introduce the prospective law student to the concept and strategy of legal thinking and legal study.5-0 out of 5 stars Necessary and sufficient

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of your time
The questions, like other reviewers have mentioned, are jaw-droppingly difficult. Some people might think that it's good to practice with difficult questions so the easier (i.e. REAL lsat questions) questions will be a cakewalk. Not true - the logic provided in the explanations are so convulted and IRRATIONAL that you will second guess yourself on the real test too much. Try the actual LSAT questions, it's better to get 1 or 2 complex questions right rather than 20 easy questions wrong because you over-thought it. I abandoned this book as I was sifting through the Logical Reasoning section, feeling like an idiot and I finally realized that the book itself was the idiot.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended as primary LSAT study guide...
If you'd really like to learn about how the LSAT questions are structured and if you have time to "memorize" the techniques suggested by the book, then "LSAT Workout" could be helpful you. However, if you just want to practice and to get comfortable with the exam, so to speak, I'd recommend getting the study guides with actual previous LSATs instead (try checking them out at the LSAC.org website).(Note: I started studying for the LSAT with this book and then switched to the Official practice tests.)
2-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended as a first book for LSAT study
Even though the questions here are good practice because they are so difficult, the explanations offered are incomplete or unenlightening or both. As a study guide, it is a resounding failure. Some answers are unreasonable and some questions --like one about pushing buttoms to get certain results, and then figuring out how to do the same if one button stops working-- are ridculous because there is no way to answer a question like that in the alloted time unless you are a computer. As such, it has no practical value for the LSAT.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource
This is a great reference to anyone applying or thinking of applying to law school.Whether or not you agree with the influence US News has in law school admissions it remains a fact of life.It is a system that is inherently flawed, but along with the rankings, this book gives detail on each school which you can and should use to further investigate the schools to which you apply.Don't let the US News rankings dictate where you apply and don't let this book replace a campus visit and talking with the dean of admissions with a prospective school.Use it to supplement those things.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some Good Information, but Faulty Data
First of all, I agree with the other posters that a lot of information is packed into this magazine/guide.It might be worth your while to purchase it for that reason.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book lives up to its name
If you are looking for an all-encompassing guide to United States law schools, I would whole-heartedly recommend this book. I reference it continually and am amazed at just how much information is concisely packaged into it.
