5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
All law students, future and present, must read this book. This book is a definite eye-opener to the realities of the legal profession. The thesis and supporting research are so compelling that they might actually change the reader's mind as to whether to invest the time and money in a law degree. Alternatively, this book will make the aspiring law student a much better customer of a legal education and/or profession. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hate to beat a dead horse
I hate to beat a dead horse, but when that's what you have...My study partner and I both bought this book, among others.Mine is riddled with errors in the second practice set, so we've been correcting it using his.Well, HIS is riddled with errors after the second practice set--DIFFERENT errors than mine! Both books are exactly the same in terms of print years and copyright, etc., etc., etc.How could that happen if the errors are not intentional?I will never, ever buy another Kaplan product, nor will I ever fail to tell everyone I know who's looking for test material about this horror.Your rating system, where reviewers are required to give a book at least one star, is flawed; but how could you have anticipated something like this?

1-0 out of 5 stars Typos Typos Typos!
This past week I've been using Kaplan's LSAT 2006, Premier Program to do some practice tests and section-specific practice problems. This book is completely riddled with errors in the answer keys, explanation numbering, as well as the explanations themselves. Luckily I've only done one full practice test in here a while ago and now I do not trust the score it gave me. I've wasted a lot of time cross referencing answers to see that I was actually correct. There are probably plenty of problems I got wrong and did not know about too. Furthermore their online program which accompanies the book has bugs in it and does not keep track of your progress like it is intended to do.
1-0 out of 5 stars Full of mistakes and bad editing
I thought the book was a waste of money.$37 for a book that's very poorly edited and full of mistakes. Many of the explanations are weak, but some of the them make no sense. Also, some of the logic games problems work only if you make implications that aren't there (example: when they say n comes before p, they want you to assume that n comes IMMEDIATELY before p instead of at some point before p).I wrote to Kaplan three times pointing out various mistakes, and haven't gotten the slightest response. The message seems to be that Kaplan doesn't give care as long as they've already gotten you to shell out money for a poorly written and ineffective book.If you want a beginner LSAT prep book, the Princeton Review is infinitely better edited and much more effective. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I'm sure it's great
I haven't read it, but I have read several reviews and I'm so curious to know what people scored on the test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful to Study
Although I agree with a previous post that suggests the title of this book is a bit misleading, since explanations are given for only 10 questions each from the reading, arguments, and games section of a single test, this is still a good book. It costs considerably less than other "official" test books put out by the the LSAT folks, who are not shy about their pricing. You get three complete, previously administered LSAT tests; the 30 explanations that are provided are quite useful, particularly those for the logic games. If you take all three tests in this book and study how the answers are arrived at, you will definitely be better prepared for the LSAT than you were before. If time permits, you can also download and study a free copy of a previously administered LSAT from the LSAC web site.Doing this will help you get prepared for the LSAT without mortgaging the farm for an expensive prep course, which you may not really need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Source You'll Find
So I bought a few of the Kaplan-type books, and while they offer strategies, I tend to just want the real deal and work on my own.For all the future LSAT-takers out there, the best study method I can prescribe is getting old tests and taking as many as possible.Everyone does things differently, and this is the best way.The book shows a few answers for each type of question and describes how they arrived there, and supplies a few ***real*** LSATs.Buy this book, as well as many old tests as you can get your hands on and use those. It's plenty, trust me (I got into schools I thought I had no chance at). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
This is an excellent introduction to critical race theory. Well-written and supported by fascinating examples, it provides an insightful introduction to the school of thought of which Richard Delgado was one of the founders. The reviewer who found it poorly supported and insighting hate is quite misguided, for this introduction does not draw enormous conclusions but rather makes humble suggestions. It is not surprising that it made the reviewer feel uncomfortable, for nobody likes to admit to his/her racisms, which is actually one of Delgado's ideas. Racism is too loaded of a word and this society needs to develop more vocabulary to describe such emotions/feelings.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horribly twisted and disgusting
This book not portrays every white person in America as a racist, but does so in a racist manner itself. The book cites almost no facts to prove its assertions that whites are inwardly racist because of their being white, and that radical measures such as affirmative action across the board (in jobs, schooling, housing, etc.) needs to become common practice to "overcome the disadvantages of being Black." The book claims to want to help all poor members of society, but mentions poor whites only in passing. The book does not effectively prove any of its claims, instead using obviously exaggerated and unlikely examples to make a point. This book only incited anger in me, not sympathy for the "poor Black man."

4-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening!A Safe and Non-Threatening Introduction
This book will change the way you view race and ethnicity in America. The authors present material and concepts that have come out of critical race theory in a readable format that is accessible to everyone.Although you may be confused about how to pin down precisely what "critical race theory" is (unfortunately, the authors don't really explain the overarching concept very well), you will be exposed to a plethora of new and radical (?) ideas that no other book or class will likely have introduced you to, such as interest convergence, which is the idea that a law will only change in favor of blacks when it is also perceived as being favorable by whites for whites. There are plenty of anecdotes, cases, and questions to keep you on your toes. This book is written in such a way so that any introductory class in history or sociology could utilize the book.I highly recommend it to professors and instructors of these courses, or to the general reader interested in race in America.Agree or disagree with them, you can't come away from the ideas in this book without thinking, and you'll never look at the legal system in the United States in quite the same way again. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars book: absolute trash
for people who really want to go to law school,... you REALLY don't want to waste your TIME and MONEY with this book. i need help on the logic reasoning section. i was hoping to get better explanations for each question. the book has absolutely NO proper format. i was spinning my wheels with this book. ABSOLUTELY NOT NECESSARY. i believe they are an opportunist taking advantage of sincere people who really want to go to law school. if you're hoping to get at least a 150 on your lsat get the princeton review (at least they format each section properly and give better explanations). if you want to get >160 get the 10 real lsat book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overrated attempt to "Guarantee" improvements
I sincerely question the claims that this book helped improve LSAT scores. These tests are insanely hard (far harder than real LSATs, take a preptest then take a Kaplan test and see if your score doesn't drop significantly.) I think the reason is that Kaplan wants you to see a low score and get freaked out and then buy more of their products. Either that or they give you a very hard test then when you take the easier real LSAT your score has gone up significantly. Magic? Nope. Improved readiness? Nope. Simply a question of making a system look better by skewing your results? Yes. For me Kaplan estimated me at a 156 on its tests, my estimated score on preptests (actual lsats)? 173. No thanks to Kaplan.4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and detailed....It helped me
I bought this book weeks ago and I must say I knew NOTHING whatsoever about the Law School Admissions Test. After reading this book, I have learned many of its basic components and also the question types presentedper section. This book is very informative about the test structure, which is crucial. The techniques offered here are of great value. The downside you may be wondering? Why only 4 stars? Well, they really need to provide more practice sets along with each section-test and also more practice on the Logic Games section (Analytical Reasoning). My score was not very high to begin with, but after reading this book, I have increased my score almost 10 points on my second practice test alone. The book definitely informs you to the point where FEAR becomes irrelevant in the test taking process. I highly recommend this book, IN ADDITION to a few other practice tests that you could get your hands on. You will very likely see improvements. PRACTICE IS KEY. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting ideas for critical reading
I got this book as a gift from a friend after I had started at a top law school that, according to this author, is not particularly female-friendly.I would never have bought this book on my own because I've never really thought I needed "special" advice as a woman, and I did fine in school. But I am very, very glad my friend gave it to me, and I wish I had read it before starting school.1-0 out of 5 stars Don't treat me like a child!
I only got through the first few chapters of the book before I was so OFFENDED I had to stop. The author clearly believes she is speaking to an immature and unintelligent audience. This is what cinched it for me:"At lower status law schools, the students of both genders are often the first generation of their families to get a higher education, and even a modest middle-class life seems good to them" (14). Why beat up your readers, Hirshman? I happen to be a first generation law student who is very displeased with the attitude of the book. I do not reccomend this for anyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Problematic thesis
This book explains how to choose a law school if you are a feminist who wants to go where no one will challenge your views.Hirshman seems to believe that feminist principles will crumble if exposed to any criticism, so she encourages people to choose schools that have lots of feminists, do not have any conservatives (and preferably not many men), and that will never question feminist beliefs. The problem is, lots of people say that the purpose of law school is to have your ideas challenged, and to face and overcome those challenges. Will Hirshman's approach train feminsists who like law school, but aren't very good lawyers? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Read Planet Law School
This book is pure fluff. It gives nebulous advice than anyone who graduated from high school should know, "prepare for class, read your notes..."The book to read about law school is Planet Law School.
4-0 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?
As an entering law student, I was looking for a substantive prep book ... and some advice on how to get through my first year. This book offered important but rather skeletal comments ("review your notes often" "read the assignments before class" "manage your stress levels and eat properly" etc). Also, the in-class note taking and case briefing concentrated on handwritten methods, despite the proliferation of laptops (and a 2001 copywright date). However this book did not take a "One L" approach of frightening the reader. After reading it I DO feel more prepared and confident than I previously did-- if nothing else than for the opportunity to develop my own case briefing style and to begin to familiarize myself with law school reading.5-0 out of 5 stars With this book you could skip orientation!
I spent 5 days from 9 to 5 at my schools orientation, when in reality all I needed was this book.It covers everything, but without all the extra yapping. And it is an excellent source to refer to.At first I wasn't sureif I should buy it because it wasnt recommended by my school, but I'm gladI did.It really does cover EVERYTHING. . .how to brief a case (IRAC), howto take notes, practice tests, and to how to cope with stress and so muchmore. This book is especially good for that first year student who doesn'tknow what to expect. Don't spend your money on other books that aren't asgood, this book is all you'll need. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Small and Weak
Well it doesn't deserve "one star" but "two."There is enough information in here to make it worth reading...for $2, not full price. The actual material is only 157 pages, not including the glossary or the list of "selected law review references."The chapters jump around a lot and there are two chapters about briefs. The reader will be disappointed to know that these briefs are NOT case briefs but advice on how to write an appeals court brief. Most law students during their first year will not have to know that information.Every chapter is tiny and is sprinkled with good advice.Nothing is given the right amount of space.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative - but in a different way.
Let me begin this stellar review by noting: if you are looking for a book that gives you step-by-step advice and ideas on how to get through law school successfully, step-by-step then DO NOT buy this book.Go out and buy "Law School Confidential" - which will give you the low down on everything.5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and Informative
This book was right on the money when it came to what I should expect frommy first year of law school. If you are disciplined and willing to makethe effort to succeed, then the tips that the book gives will prove veryuseful. If you are not willing to make the efort, then do not buy the bookbecause you will need more than a simple book to do well in school. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Mistakes for a Test Prep!!!
I have only gotten through the first 2 logical reasoning practice tests (13 questions each) and have found 3 serious printing and explanation errors. It has become increasingly difficult to have faith in this book which is 'allegedly' going to help me achieve better results on what I consider THE MOST IMPORTANT TEST I WILL TAKE CONCERNING MY FUTURE--something I do not take lightly. When the validity of Kaplan's expertise in test preparation is so blatantly off track within the first 70 pages of this extensive book, I stongly recommend Princeton--that is where I am heading right now.Where are the editors? They should be ashamed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
I bought this book after taking the LSAT's a first time. There was only a little over a month until my next LSAT's so I was cramming the whole book into about a month. Well it worked, and the book was amazing. There are a few mistakes in the book, but there is a notice online that alerts you to these mistakes and gives you the correct answers. Also, online there is a comprehensive diagnostic exam that tells you your strengths and weaknesses electronically, a big help. The online syllabus that corresponds to the book is a big help to because it forces you to focus on a timeline. I would highly recommend this book. IT IMPROVED MY SCORE BY EXACTLY TEN POINTS!

This book has short chapters about the law school experience and pertinent application issues, but the main reason to consider this book is the section featuring 117 schools profiled in depth.Especially valuable is the feedback, summarized or quoted, provided by students who have attended or are attending those schools. The editor chose not to include students' comments if only a few students responded to the Princeton Review survey, so I accept that the comments supplied reflect a general consensus. At times when opinions differ, balanced views are quoted and provided as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Offensively poor.
LSAT is stressful enough. This book is riddled with myriad typos, incorrect answers, flawed logic, and in some cases needlessly confusing strategies that are poorly laid out on top of that.Thank God I've got time and another $20 to buy a better book.It pales grievously in comparison to the Kaplan book I purchased, but I will definitely seek out another book that focuses on logic game strategy, because this has given me nothing but headaches.
1-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes and not enough strategy
I bought this book hoping that it would help me increase my speed on the LSAT games.Though I am now able to complete the games in this book about twice as quickly as when I started, these games do not mirror the format of the games on the actual LSAT.I am continuing with it only because I take the LSAT in 3 days and don't have time to buy another book. Here are some of my biggest complaints:
1-0 out of 5 stars A sloppy waste
Ditto what everyone else has said.I wish I had read all the negative reveiws before wasting my money on this book, cuz they are true.Lots of typos, different question formats than are found on the actual LSAT - it's enough to completely subvert your confidence.
