5-0 out of 5 stars Ritter's book breaks new ground
Ritter's book breaks new ground in the universe of "how to" books for lawyers. In a highly readable, even engaging, personal style, the author demonstrates that even complex legal and factual issues can be simplified and dramatized effectively for a jury. The presentation in the text, and accompanying CD, is rich with visually arresting and intriguing graphic examples illustrating both the right, and wrong, ways to convey themes, concepts and facts at trial. After reading this book, even experienced courtroom lawyers will not try cases the same way again.Although written for trial lawyers, the book is really about how to be visually persuasive in any forum, not simply in a courtroom.Although the book will have its greatest impact in improving the quality of trial work, particularly in complex cases, it belongs in the library of anyone in the business of persuading others, whether in the legal profession or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for any attorney who goes to trial.
There is an old adage, "seeing is believing" but in reality, it's how the information is formulated and presented that will determine how well information is conveyed. This book is a masterpiece of showing just how visual information is presented in the courtroom. Mr. Ritter has done nothing less than a phenomenal job of showing the why's and wherefore of presenting visual evidence in the courtroom. Any attorney who is not aware of the information presented in this book is going to go to trial much less prepared than his or her adversary who probably has read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reveals the Secrets Behind Brilliant Legal Graphics...
With just the right mix of folk wisdom and technical know-how, this gem of a book distills a tremendous amount of courtroom knowledge down to some very practical advice. These are the sorts of lessons one would otherwise have to learn the hard way, only after years and years spent before judges and juries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it
This is a fantastic hard cover book which relates much of the information needed when working in the related field. Tjompson/Delmar Learning publishers are among the highest in their field. If you are looking for a source on Civil litigation then you most certainly have found it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs down
This book is very poorly written. There are many typographical errors throughout the book and many, many inaccuracies in the content. Some terms are used incorrectly and instead of assisting the reader in learning civil litigation, it creates confustion and frustration.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great source of info
For all those up and comming law studients, this is a great information source. Step by step, the steps of the litigation process are illustrated. In addition, it is written in such a way that even a person with no legal background (like myself) can understand it. I highly recomend this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good material---but Outdated
The title of my review says it all: the text and the study guide were fine at the time they were published in 1996, but this is 2004 and a great deal has changed in California's court system from the vantage of civil procedure. The publisher should have updated this book no later than 2000 when the courts were administratively unified; additionally, local and state rules of procedure have been dramatically altered to place greater emphasis on ADR (alternative dispute resolution) and the rules regarding Fast-track litigation have likewise undergone significant changes.5-0 out of 5 stars Next best thing to the law library
I bought this book in preference over several other self help law books I examined after I fired my lawyer and went in pro per. Lots of really helpful, accessible, thorough, and friendly information. In fact it was sogood that I promised myself I would write its first online review. Youwon't get much help on how to act in court, though, as only attorneys cando that and not paralegals, who it was written for. But don't listen to meI'm not an attorney. My lesson in all of this was to stay out of court inthe first place. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Way overpriced
First off, this book is waayyyy overpriced. There are other good books on the market at half the cost. And there are other books that are better written, too.I was surprised at the sloppy writing of this new edition. If you are intent on buying this book, find a used copy of the last edition, which is better, or choose one of the better books out there.Don't go by ratings alone.Check out the book in your local bookstore first, just to be sure you find one that meets your needs. The information is this book can be found on the Internet on different sites, so there is no needed to shell out hard-earned dollars for this one.Find something else and you won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a mom with a son with Tourette Syndrome
Whether you are new to the world of "special ed" or you are a seasoned veteran, attorney, Lawrence M. Siegel's book will guide you through the advocacy maze with ease. It is a valuable resource of information, including, but not limited to: an overview of special ed and the IEP process; sample IEP forms and letters; organization and planning tips; a listing of support groups, advocacy organizations and federal and state departments of education. Laws and procedures change frequently, and regulations can be different from state to state, so new editions are printed periodically. You can even take advantage of an "update service" that offers a 35% discount on any future purchases.4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview, but doesn't replace having an advocate/lawyer
This guide provides a good overview of the special education and IEP process, as well as some sample forms and letters. It also usefully collects the relevant federal statutes and regulations. But I found the descriptions of the process to be quite different from what happens here in D.C., so that ultimately its utility was somewhat limited. There is, perhaps, no solution to this -- the book can't be written for every school district in the country. So while the book is useful, in many areas you will be well served to hire a special ed consultant and/or attorney. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping Legal Drama Makes Great Reading
David Lebedoff is an excellent author. He goes to great lengths to portray factually and fairly the complicated story of the Exxon Valdez oil spill and ensuing trial.Despite the complex legal issues involved,Lebedoff skillfully makes the book read as though it were a novel.I wouldreccomend this book to anyone in need of a good read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Highly detailed, but misspells a couple of Alaskan places
On March 24, 1989, the 987 foot oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground onBligh Reef, spilling 11 million gallons of North Slope crude oil into theonce pristine waters of Prince William Sound, creating the largest oilspill in U.S. history.David Lebedoff offers a detailed account of thespill and the legal wranglings surrounding the record $5 billion judgmentagainst Exxon, a judgment that is still under appeal. Lebedoff attempts toprovide an even-handed look at the spill and the development of the legalcase that grew out of it, but is hampered by the fact that Exxon refused toprovide comment. This is not the author's fault, but readers should beadvised that this book gives more insight into the perspectives of thevictims and their attorneys than it does into public relations strategiesthat Exxon may have employed and so on.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars International taxation made understandable
This book makes international taxation easy to understand.
2-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy and superficial
This book was disappointing for three reasons. First, there are computational errors in the chapter on the foreign tax credit. Second, there are errors of fact in the summary of Aiken v. Commissioner on page 239. The author confused the roles of the Bahamian corporation and the Honduran corporation or, at the very least, doesn't adequately explain the relation between the two in this case. The case is only 2 pages long, which makes this slip inexcusable. Third, the author is capable of better. He openned his career with one of the most powerful critiques of the "substance over form" doctrine. This book, by contrast, reads like something that was tossed off in a week. Moreover, the work is out of date. Four years is an eternity in this fast-changing area of the law. Conduits are old-hat. The "limitation-on-benefit" clauses included in every US treaty since 1979 has killed them. Where is the chapter on dual consolidated losses and other double-dip transactions? Why does the author cite cases from the 1920s when there are more recent guidance on point? Etc. etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a Great Book
What a delight it is to read a book that simplifies the areana of international taxation. The author has written a book that is easy to digest and actually makes the topic interesting with practical examples. This book is well worth the purchase price.Well done! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A new world
My firm took on a civil asset forfeiture case and I received the daunting task of trying to get the case to court.I found Mr. Sibley's book most informative, as it made clear an area of law that is unfamiliar to most. The book includes sample pleadings that I found very helpful. The area ofcivil asset forfeiture is complex, and Mr. Sibley'sbook is a must-readfor anyone who is considering tackling it.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST book/cd on Civil Forefeiture!
This is truly a BIBLE to handling civil forefeiture cases! It contains everything you need in battling with the government in forefeiture cases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, easy to use, consice & complete practice guide
Mr. Sibley has taken the mystery, wonder and guess work out of the Federal Foreiture arena. This Practice Manual is structured to equip any attorney with the knowledge and skill necessary to challenge a property seizure bythe Feds efficiently, effectively and with confidence. As a solepracticioner criminal defense attorney the Manual is perfectly suited as apractice guide for the occasional forfeiture matters I handle. The timesavings alone are invaluable as compared to conducting research fromscratch and the ease of use allows for quicker, more complete planning ofcase stategy and preparation. I find the CD format ideally suited for thistype of manual as compared to a 600 page book.
