5-0 out of 5 stars A solid resource with which to educate oneself
Knowledgeably written by Philip H. Miller (an expert practicing attorney specializing in media law), and now in its fourth edition featuring new and expanded sections on option agreements, the use of copyrighted materials, developments in Internet law, as well as interactive productions, Media Law For Producers is a straightforward, 399-page guide to legal issues relevant to media projects for theatrical, television, radio, print, or electronic projects from production contracts, to copyright registration for finished programs, and more. Specifically written to be accessible to the non-specialist general reader, and to be as a solid resource with which to educate oneself before consulting with a media attorney who would charge by the hour for his expertise, Media Law For Producers is a "must-have" resource for anyone seriously involved in producing a media project regardless of the subject matter or format. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice
My book arrived within five days of placing my order, which was wonderful because I started class the very next day. There was some writing in it as described, but I don't care because it's a book, and as long as I can read the text, that's all that's really important. Anyway, the book was in great condition, it was the right edition, and it's easy to read. Thanks for the great service!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reason It's a CLASSIC! (9th Ed./InfoTrac Incl.)
"Must-have" if you're interested in law or law school bound...Superb reference and learning book (there is also a Study Guide -- harder to find); you'll keep this book for years of use! If you take a Criminal Justice course, this is the text you should hope the prof demands. It is truly the best out there.Yes, it's pricy - but worth every dollar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Praise from a former student
Mr. Holsinger was my Communications Law teacher many years ago at Indiana University. His lectures were intriguing, enough so that even 26 years later I remember "Times v. Sullivan" and the hypotheticals he offered to help us think about the concepts. I purchased the first edition of this textbook when it was published. His writing was engaging. It was useful in my career as a newspaper reporter and editor. Now that I'm a law student, I'm even more grateful for his instruction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I first read this book when it was entered into a media history book competition for which I was a judge, before Sept. 11 and Afghanistan and Iraq. I was extremely impressed then. More recently, I have assigned my media history students (undergraduate and graduate students) to read it, and this fall, I am requiring graduate students in media law to read it. I'm not using this book so much because I'm too lazy to find or read another one; it's really that good. Nearly every sentence forces one to think about democracy, law, journalism, the nature of government, the role of the military, and the information needs of average citizens. It's not only for professors and journalism, history or law students. One of the best books I've ever read--no kidding.

5-0 out of 5 stars History That Helps You Understand the Headlines
Although published before the current war on terrorism, this book's historical overview of the relationship between media and the American government during times of war is strikingly relevant to today's headlines. Military tribunals for civilians? Abe Lincoln tried that in the Civil War. Another intriguing element is the discussion of how suppression of the atomic bomb's development -- by both the government and the media -- led to not only an ill-informed public, but an ill-informed president and may have impacted the final actions of World War II.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely and perceptive look at TV's links to law
I found this book to be extrmely informative and insightful about the way that today's TV shows focusing on the legal system run surprisingly parallel to the actual ways in which our criminal justice sytem has shifted from a liberal concern for civil liberties and defendants rights to an increasingly punitive focus on punishment and the presumption of guilt. Rapping has a really clear and readable writing style unusual for academics. I would recommend this anyone interested media and/or criminal and legal issues ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Handy Companion in Getting to Know More About Chess
Spanning centuries and tracing it's origins to the dawn of civilization, Chess is one of the greatest and most storied games. Developing from both the East and the West into the most mentally challenging sport, "The Oxford Companion to Chess" informs and illustrates adequately the rich and colorful history of the game of kings. In well-written articles, this companion features the various facets of the complex game. The great players, the numerous openings and their variations, and many topics in relation to the game are represented, includingillustrations and b & w photographs to complement the text. One could come across the controversial and brilliant career of Bobby Fischer and in the turn of pages read about Computers and Chess. One glances though "gamesmanship", defined by it's inventor Stephen Potter as the "art of winning games without actually cheating", or "mansuba", an Arabic term for a composed middlegame or endgame position which serves as a form of instruction or solving. And the beginner could finally learn what in heaven's name that "en passant" means.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great reading and excellent reference.
I don't believe the reader from Athens, GA that said this book helped his game. DON'T buy this book if you are looking for a book that will improve your game. (Its highly doubtful that you would improve much even after HOURS or even DAYS of reading this book.)5-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed
This book really helped me in my chess-playing. As the review above says, it describes many many different words, terms, etc. It explains everything from the rules to what a zugzwang is (i wish this had a spell-checker).Best book on chess ever! 4-0 out of 5 stars Case Background
The major categories of mass communication are presented with key cases under each. Prior to getting into the various cases, background on the legal system is explained. The readers are told about public communication and the law in general. There is an overview of the first amendment to the U.S. constitution. Logically flowing out of that is discussion of issues directly related such as libel and privacy. Graphically the design is such that the content is easy to digest. The book goes on to provide sections on intellectual property, corporate speech, advertising, and journalism. Matters of accessibility are included as well. This book is an excellent overview to mass media law. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Maybe if you like being PATRONIZED
I haven't hit my 21st birthday yet, and I've had my share of run-ins with the law, so I was somewhat familiar with the American Penal System before I read this for a class in college. That said, Don Pember patronizes the hell out of this book. On page 492, it says "The photo was a picture of a diary farmer and a cow standing in the field." Yep. A diary farmer. It made the typo; I'm just repeating it. On page 383, it says "Certainly a reporter could not be laid by the heels for contempt because he missed the essential point in a trial or failed to summarize the issues to accord with the views of the judge who sat on the case." On page 370, it uses the word "lawbreaker." Page 269: "Society often judges the rape victim to be as guilty as the rapist." haha god gimme a break

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best media law sources out there
I've just finished writing a paper for my Advanced Placement Journalism class about freedom of speech and obscenity over the radio. This book was one of my best sources. It portrayed Supreme Court cases and laws passed by Congress in great depth and detail and managed to write it all in a language most Americans will understand. I plan to use this book for every essay I can. ... Read more
