Very good comprehensive text
This book was mandatory for a forensic case law course taught by a seasoned forensic expert.It is thorough, accurate, and provides everything one needs to know before conducting forensic evaluations, as well as a significant amount of information most professionals ought to know but often don't.I recommend it as a tremendous resource for any clincian, especially those who have even a mild interest in forensic or correctional psychology.

Not a light Sunday afternoon read, this book requires time to think and digest topics.It provides outstanding survey and advanced analysis of research, U.S. laws, and policies across the major foci.While a bit dated, it probably is the best source for gaining an understanding of forensic mental health.An outstanding reference.I feel somewhat odd in reviewing this book, almost like, I'd imagine someone feels when reviewing the Bible.Well worth the price.I wish it would have an annual or biannual update.

Excellent reference, but a little outdated as of this writing (Dec. 2001).Opinions and recommendations of the authors do not in all respects reflect the majority, or even the respectible minority, of forensic psychologists and psychiatrists.Nonetheless, an excellent reference to have in your library to get the overall gist of an issue or a topic at the interface of psychology and the law.Detailed information pertaining to actual practices will need to be located elsewhere. ... Outstanding coverage, best prep for CJPEE
This text clearly and concisely covers the most critical and challenging aspects of California mental health law. No legalese or unusual jargon, just common sense answers to your most frequently asked questions. I used this text to prepare for the CJPEE and I could not recommend it more highly. It's an interesting read and very helpful to the practicing therapist.

every therapist needs this book
The primary author is well known as an instructor of "Family Law" for graduate students of psychology, social work, marriage & family therapy, etc. at several north Texas universities.His courses arealways well-received.A previous reviewer commented that a mental healthprofessional would have been helpful.I doubt that would make a differencesince so many professionals from various clinical disciplines use theseauthors as resources.This book is a great adjunct to remind yourself whatyou need to do as a professional to protect yourself & your clients. While you do not offer legal advice if you are not an attorney, being awareof these issues makes a counselor more likely to recommend that a clientsee an attorney for advice.Also, re-reading this book on a regular basisreminds us of what we need to continue to do to protect our professionallicenses.Often when we are in private practice, just as in other areas oflife, we sometimes get lax or forget to attend to all the details necessaryto protect us as professionals & our clients.This book is a must foryour professional library.

Going into practice? Here's what you must know first.
I stumbled across this book while preparing a project as part of my undergrad Psychology studies at the University of Utah. What a lucky find this is! *** Many statements exist in the world of mental health practice regarding what standards of professionalism, ethicality, conduct, andconfidentiality a psychologist should adhere to. Many of them, I'vediscovered so far, are abstract: they state the standard but give little,if any, illustration on how a practicing therapist applies all that tohis/her job and life. This book is the first I've uncovered that gives theclear and understandable picture that I need as an aspiring psychologist.*** I think I understand well enough the general principle that motivatedthe authors to write this book: all too often, each of us has gotten burnedin the past because of some rule, some technicality, some law that wouldhave worked in our favor had we acted with a knowledge of it. For example,I know someone who wouldn't have paid a single cent of his medical billscaused by an on-the-job accident had he simply reported his injury within48 hours instead of waiting a week. Things like that. I'm always makingsure I do things like keep receipts, review credit card statements, andwatch what creeps into my college transcripts, because it's the littlethings that can screw our lives up so badly. All the more so fortherapists, the authors believe, because of their heavy responsibility tosafeguard their clients' welfare, and because unfortunately their trainingdoesn't seem to prepare them for some types of potential legal trouble. ***As part of that approach, this book takes an interesting departure fromother literature on mental health ethics. Despite what the title says, thecontents seem to focus not so much on protecting the client--although thatprinciple is by no means diminished--as it does on protecting thetherapist. That may seem selfish, but hey, you've got to learn this stuffsomehow! *** The authors do an excellent job of explaining a diversity ofissues in understandable ways. They use well-constructed scenarios thatmake you ask yourself, "what would I do if faced with thisdilemma?" Then they systematically explain what the options are, andwhat to avoid along the way. They show you several sample documents alongthe way that demonstrate how to remove any legal doubts from your practice.The objective is to prevent things from going wrong, but they also discusswhen things get ugly, such as a client who commits suicide and therelatives sue you, the therapist, for malpractice. Or when to breachconfidentiality and activate your "duty to warn" if a clientthreatens violence against someone else--or yourself. *** I noted that theauthors were both lawyers, and that only one was licensed as a mastersocial worker. I wish, despite their impressive knowledge and experience,that a psychologist might have collaborated with them on this work. Iwonder what sort of change in perspective it would have brought to havesomeone involved in this writing who was solely a practioner of mentalhealth, and not of law. *** Nevertheless, if you have a vested interest inpsychology, I think this is essential reading. If you are a practicingpsychologist, and you do not completely know these practical issues, youmay be an unwitting candidate for some serious trouble. A Lifesaver- but a bit out of date
This book was a lifesaver when it came to preparing for final exams. A very nice summary that hits all the major topics in Mental Health law. My only complaint is that it hasn't been updated since 97.So although most of the information is still accurate, it doesn't cover any of the more-recent developments in the law. Either way, if your struggling in a course, it's a great tool to have- just be aware that it was published in 1997, but I've looked and this was the best option I could find. ... Read more

One of the great books on criminal justice
Willard Gaylin is a gifted writer who is also a psychiatrist with long years of practice.The book is about an awful murder, but more than that it's about the inability of institutions of society -- Yale, and the criminal justice system -- to deal effectively with immorality and cruelty.The murder is the lens through which Gaylin brings social, moral and psychiatric issues into focus.Twenty years after I first read this book it remains vivid in my mind.

Poignantly haunting.
This is one of those rare books that, for better or worse, keeps me under its daunting yoke. It's gory depiction of the murder of Bonnie Garland, a 1970s Yale undergraduate, and of the mindset of her murderer, a fellow student, is breathtaking in an eerie, dreadful sort of way. When I read this book about four years ago, the hairs on my arms stood straight up. When I think about this book today, my Pavlovian hairs march in step. Giving me a glimpse of the mind of a killer is what I liked about this book. Brilliant.

The final word
This book really should be the final word on the "debate" about whether, and the degree to which, traumatic memories can be repressed.The authors thoroughly and rigorously examine the scientific evidence showing that traumatic memories are indeed often forgotten.
