4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage
Many people get al excited when they first try to get into the music business only to get shot down by the many intricate twists and turns involving all the legal aspects of running a record label. Mountains of forms and paperwork with no understanding slowly stack up on the producer's desk with no end in site. The situation is a cry for help and that help comes in the form of information, information obtained by reading this very interesting book that details all that is involved with law aspects of this kind.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-read.
This book is hella boring, but its definitely a necessity for anyone involved in music. It clears up a lot of questions, and a lot of things you might have never even thought about. Reading this book is a must if you want a grasp on legal concepts. I also suggest "101 Music Business Contracts" from Platinum Millenium.

this book isnt all its cracked up to be but has plenty of really good onformation and examples hide inside it. from how to negotiate a contract to many other laws and such this book covers mainly all of it. for a better less boring book that has plenty of examples in it i suggest the book by ty cohen "101 Music Business Contracts" you cant go wrong with that one! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for lawyers and law students
Harvard Law prof Mary Ann Glendon has written a fine book on a theme near and dear to my heart: the joys of the common law and the need to return to it. It's been described as a bit short on solutions, but perhaps those critics don't know that common law generates solutions as it goes.5-0 out of 5 stars A lodestar for a lost profession
Prof. Glendon provides a fresh look at the crisis of faith in the legalcommunity through a survey of the recent history of the bar, the bench andthe academy."A Nation Under Lawyers" urges lawyers, judges andlaw professors alike to examine their consciences and try to appreciate thebeauty of the lawyer's craft and the common law.Though the common lawtradition is not perfect, Prof. Glendon suggests that it is the combinedexperience, understanding and judgment of many generations of jurists. Activist judges, critical legal theorists and disheartened practitionerswould all do well to heed Prof. Glendon's words and find new heart in thenever-ending work of building a stronger common law tradition.Writtenin a manner accessible to attorneys and non-attorneys alike, "A NationUnder Lawyers" provides a solid survey of recent academic and legaldebates for every reader, but is especially helpful -- indeed, essential --to every student contemplating a life in the law. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
American Law In A Global Context is a good introduction to basic principles of American law. It covers most topics studied by law students in their first year of law school, and translates them into short chapters stressing the essential principles. It is interesting to notice that, while the topics treated in the book are very diverse, the authors manage to show links between the different areas of the (complex) American legal system.

Editorial Review

Cheating, argues author David Callahan, is no longer the exclusive purview of lowlife criminals, slick hucksters, and shady characters with ace cards shoved in secretive places. Now everyone's doing it and because everyone sees everyone else doing it, they keep on doing it. Callahan says the trouble begins in America's brutally competitive economic climate, which rewards results and looks the other way when it comes to the ethical and even criminal transgressions of those who come out on the winning end. Certainly there is no shortage of examples of cheating from the business community, and Callahan nimbly dissects the dishonest actions of the usual suspects (Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossing) to demonstrate how that same mentality extends out to our educational system, amateur and professional sports, the news media, and even the lives of common citizens who, while they would never think of themselves as being cheaters, are nevertheless inclined to commit the occasional act of beneficial fudging. And while honesty is a nice ideal, Callahan says that cheaters cheat because, contrary to oft-repeated axioms, cheaters win: the chances of being caught are shrinking as are the punishments meted out should one be nabbed, and the benefits of a successful cheat far outstrip any potential threat. Further, Callahan posits that otherwise upright folks who would not cheat are drawn into the practice out of fear that they simply won't be able to make it in modern society otherwise. There's a lot of material for Callahan to work with here, given that every instance of cheating is fair game as source material and is able to be used to construct a theory of epidemic. And the range of material is so broad and the basic argument ("we cheat more") so simple that Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A good book for indiscriminate followers
If you are looking for a pro socialist (but surprisingly anti-postmodern) and horribly pessimistic view of American society, I recommend this book.If you like vague generalizations and loosely correlated (but very interesting) facts presented as truth, The Cheating Culture is for you.
4-0 out of 5 stars The moral decline in america...from a liberal point of view
In today's society, steroid-enhanced sports figures cork their bats, while corporate executives cook their books. In the days after 9/11, banking institutions whose networking system crashed saw their clients draw out millions of dollars they did not own.Parents push to have their children wrongfully diagnosed with learning disorders so they can have extended time on tests.Lawyers exaggerate expense reports; doctors get kick-backs for promoting vitamins; and commission-based mechanics work to find expensive problems on well-running vehicles.

1-0 out of 5 stars An Illogical Chain of reasoning
When I read this book, I was amused by it. To say that the disorder in Africa benefits someone--e.g., via corruption--has been around for some time and is nothing new. To say that this disorder somehow makes the societies "work" is new but illogical. For something to "work" for the continent as a whole it must have positive net benefit. Right now, the disorder in Africa is such that the benefit to those who gain is far less than the loss to those who lose. This is a well-known research result. Africa doesn't work; the disorder results in a net loss to Africa. Why Africans do not do enough to change the institutional and organizational order is an interesting reasearch topic. How one can help Africans do something about this predicament is also an interesting research topic. But to say that the disorder works is illogical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Difficult questions that need to be asked
The authors of "Africa Works" pose a series of challenges to the existing Western orthodoxy about African politics and government. What if Africa is headed neither toward anarchy nor Western-style modernity, but toward its own unique brand of the future? What if politics is envisioned in a fundamentally different manner in Africa than in the West? What if African political elites were not being manipulated by international institutions, but were in fact doing the manipulating themselves?5-0 out of 5 stars This IS how Africa works!
After working in Africa off and on for twenty years in development, relief and human rights, I would recommend that every expat who is planning to work there read this book. I would make it compulsory reading for all WB,Dfid, USAID, UN, etc employees... even Peace Corps, WUSC, VSO, etc people! The alternative is personal frustration arising from becoming aware of thestructures identified here, without understanding their origin andfunctionality. Instead of seeing perverse events as idiosyncratic, you willbegin to understand that they are part of a larger whole, rooted in thepolitical economy and history of the continent. Excellent book! ... Editorial Review

The tortured history of Afghanistan is illuminatingly outlined by Barnett S. Rubin, an American academic and human rights monitor in the region. In the 19th century, the country successfully resisted colonial rule, becoming a buffer between the imperial superpowers, Britain and Russia. That dangerous position resulted in an isolation that held back modernization and the emergence of a modern central government. In this century, the Soviet Union and the United States maintained the status quo up until the early seventies, when a communist coup heralded massive outside intervention. The country was ripe for a disastrous fragmentation. This scholarly study is complemented by a sequel: Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fragmentation of Afghanistan: State Formation and Collapse in the International System
This book is excellent. It describes in great detail how Great Britain, Russia, Th U.S. and now Pakistan have contributed to the destruction of the basic fiber of the country and the reasons this happened.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fragmentation of Afganistan
I received two copiesof book and returned one. I did enjoy the book very much.

4-0 out of 5 stars very detailed and well researched, but a tough read
Barry Rubin's account of the fragmentation of Afghanistan and the failure of the state is a very detailed in-depth account of the different parties involved, and the cobweb of international and national actors. I especially appreciated the new post September 11 preface to the second edition. It is a great book for the academic or those looking for a serious book on Afghanistan, however I would not recommend it for someone with little knowledge of the region and its and religous political struggles. Without an understanding of the region, the reader is not likely to get past the first chapter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chomsky's Latin America
Chomsky writes an excellent review of U.S. foreign policy with Latin America.I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to gain insight into actions undertaken by America's governmental apparatus on other nations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of U.S. hegemony
While this book by Chomsky may not be as up to date as some of his other works, it still creates a vivid understanding in the reader's mind about the true nature of U.S. foreign policy in Latin America. This book includes interviews from the last fifteen years, focusing mostly in a broad sense on U.S. foreign policy and its effect on countries like Nicaragua, El Salvador, The Dominican Republic, and various other countries. This book, like most of Chomsky's work, can sometimes come off as rather depressing. But honestly, as Chomsky points out, the U.S. record of subversion and destruction of democracy in Latin America is nothing but depressing.Chomsky also should not be critisized for telling the truth about U.S. foreign policies, which are primarily designed to promote American corporate greed over the needs of the majority of the people in Latin America. This book shows, like Chomsky's other works, a brilliant and honest analysis of U.S. foreign policy. Also, this book is so useful because it provides a great starting point for anyone interested in reading more in depth accounts of U.S. foreign intervention.Chomsky's strong point though, as readers need to understand, is in educating people about the true nature of corporate and governmental policies designed to rape the people of Latin America (not in telling individuals exactly what actions to take to fight opression). While this book is very depressing, I think that that's exactly the point. It is meant to enrage Americans, and push them to hold their politicians accountable for negligent, murderous behavior. My advice, pick up this book, and get to agitating. As anyone familiar with Chomsky understands, reading this book is not enough.Implicit in this book, as well as in the rest of his works is the idea that Americans must become active in struggling to end injustice.Once one understands that basic idea, it is much easier to read this book without feeling the sense of hopelessness many come away with after reading or listening to Chomsky.Overrall, a must read for anyone interested in freedom and democracy.

5-0 out of 5 stars an overview of the dreadful record in Latin America
This compilation work on US policy and Latin America is a pretty devastating read, covering various topics in interviews from between 1984 and 1998.The previous critique regarding the material in some of the older interviews, or rather the absense of further material that has surfaced since, is understandable, but I found the wide timeline covered in the book to be more welcome than it was a detriment. The format highlights what has been at the heart of policy over all these respective years and events, namely, the consistent effort to manipulate and coerce the political arena and the people by any and all means necessary.Violence and other means of force are used to 'stack the court' with appropriately subservient 'leaders', typically under the guise of "democracy" while actually subverting it, and heaping more hardship on many of these already struggling countries and underprivileged people.Well worth the read.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book you all must read to understand this oil mess.
I read this book while I was on vacation and it really open my eyes on all this News about oil. I understood for the first time, our relationship with the Middle East and how it became our blood for their oil. The mess in Iran , the the lip service our goverment has been giving us about establishing an energy policy and the same time, cozying up with the Oil CEo's and playing games with our future. There is so much more information about how this black Gold is controling us and will control us for decades unless something is done. I not too hopeful but at least I understand the situation better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Energy security is national security
Michael Klare doesn't agree with S. Huntington that contemporary conflicts are rooted in civilization differences. For him, they are struggles for scarce and valuable materials: arable land, water, timber, commodities and, most notably, oil.
5-0 out of 5 stars Corrupt Politicians & Greedy Big Auto/Big Oil
Start off with procrastinating, uncaring, and ultimately corrupt politicians. Add in the piggish CEOs of Big Auto and Oil who don't give a whit about pollution or what's good for this country. They don't care if a Ford Excursion gets 8 MPG as long as they're guaranteed their disgracefully high paychecks. The technology for clean, high MPG vehicles has been around for some time but these shysters collude to prevent change. Remedy: first we force Big Auto America to build reliable cars (instead of their usual junk). They've been dumping crap on the consumer for years. If Honda and Toyota can build a great car, then why not GM and Ford? These vehicles must get at least 30 MPG to start off with further step-ups in MPG at a measured pace. This will be a REQUIREMENT and no politician will be allowed to tamper with it, no stinking lobbyist allowed to influence it. Dump the EPA figures posted on new vehicles in favor of reality - experience has shown the EPA mpg estimates are way off in favor of Big Auto (which also sounds suspicious to me). Impose the same restrictions on foreign auto manufacturers wishing to sell in the lucrative U.S. market. Next we prohibitproduction and/or import of oversized, gas hogging SUVs and trucks except for proven business/commercial interests. Ration gas to those who drive these disasters for personal use. Their keeping-up-with-the-Jones's ranking in the suburbs must be sacrificed to conserve gasoline. Allow owners of behemoth SUVs and trucks 15-20 gallons per week max. If their gas hog only goes 200 miles on their allotment, tough. They can carpool, ride a bike, or walk. Then we drill in Anwar and any-the-hell-place required to get more oil to build up huge strategic reserves while we are transferring to cleaner, fuel efficient technologies. Also restrict the amount Big Oil can charge the consumer for gasoline. Remember, oil/gas are not discretionary purchases like a new computer or a new house. We gotta have gas in our cars to get to work and drive the economy. Big Oil should make an excellent profit, yet not be allowed to screw the consumer with impunity. If Iraqis only pay a nickel a gallon, why are we paying upwards of $3 per gallon??? Whaddaya say? Sounds like a good start to me. This is the only way to avert the dangers delineated in this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Searching for efficacy
Dickson's analysis of the rise of the entrepreneurial class, the expansion of privitization, and these factors' possibility for change provides and insightful consideration of capitalism vis-a-vis civil society in China. Though admittedly academic, this sociological examination on how the CCP and the rising capitalists interact and ultimately work to benefit one another. You will need some background in both sociology (or at least a vague understanding of what civil society is) and current Chinese trends. With these two things at your disposal, this book is rather informative.

3-0 out of 5 stars Underwhelming
Much of this book is devoted to examining whether the rise of an entrepreneurial class will create pressures for political reform. It does a decent job of answering the rather narrow question it asks - it shows that entrepreneurs aren't advocating much reform. But this is a disappointingly limited subset of the ways in which capitalism could be producing pressure for reform. For example, increased competition between news media could make reporters more aggressive at discussing controversial subjects, or the internet could make it easier to organize political movements.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book is difficult to follow because it is written in the format of an academic student's report.Little background knowledge is given, so a person unfamiliar with Chinese politics could easily get lost.I felt more like I was reading a high school report put together primarily for the benefit of the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Brazil Reader
I'm a capoeira instructor living in the United States. I wish all of my students would read this collection. It's a great introduction to the history, culture, and politics of Brazil. So much of life in Brazil is so different from life in the United States. So much of that difference is because of the history of each country.
5-0 out of 5 stars Short Pieces for Fun Reading
From exerpts of historical claims to letters from diplomats, from essays on slavery to descriptions of food, this book gives insights on the spirit and history of Brazil in easy to read snippets. Apicture of a people emerges from original sources and non-academic evaluations that adds debth to what you will see when you go there.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish this book was in Portuguese
I brought this book in Los Angeles on the way back from a trip to Disney with my children. I finished it almost when I arrived home. The book has great insight and should be read by Brazilians, because it presents thingsas they are, not as they are supposed to be. Maybe the book will bepblished in Brazil some day. I hope so. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Review of Bush Starting With the First Election
The present book is a compelling read and covers many but not all of the major issues on terrorism and Iraq.
3-0 out of 5 stars A decent overview
The book is an adequate overview of President Bush's foreign policy through the first three years of his office. But it does not do justice to the more intelectually challenging questions of the administration's foreign policy such as why exactly did America go to war in Iraq and what kind of role are the neo-conservatives playing in the administration.

5-0 out of 5 stars A reasoned, balanced critique of Bush's foreign policy
Unlike the rather vitrioic and harsh rhetoric of the Bush-hating left, this book presents a fair yet reasoned critique of the Bush foreign policy. It rebuts the common assertion that Bush is an idiot or that he is being a tool by a neo-conservative cabal.
