4-0 out of 5 stars Your opinion is required
My India-born spouse once described the difference in how he and I had been taught, through subtle societal reward, to make and respond to assertions. "If you say, 'The sky is blue,'" he said, "I think, 'Ann thinks the sky is blue.' But if I say to you, 'The sky is blue,' you say, 'Oh, it is?' You're ready to believe, just because I stated it as fact. That's why you hedge your thoughts with the words, 'I think,' rather than just saying what you think."
5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful
This is the first book by Roy that I read, and my favorite. In comparison to The God of Small Things, that's saying a lot.The first essay is the most powerful and clear explanation I have ever read anywhere about the failings of organisations such as the WTO; however, it is not only an attack on international financial institutions. It also discusses the abuses that occur on a national and local level in conjunction with the work of international groups.I suggest this book to anyone who is having trouble understanding the objections to globalization and the WTO.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dams, poverty, and nuclear insanity
This is a short but effective book. It's divided into two parts. In part one, Arundhati Roy writes about dam-building in India. This heavily-footnoted chapter gets a longer treatment in her next book, Power Politics. Here she introduces the topic, adding a lot of context to the statistics. Her outrage is palpable. This leads into the second part, and angry essay about India and Pakistan becoming part of the nuclear fraternity (both countries publicly tested nuclear weapons in May of 1998). Both countries have so many problems --- and so much tension between them over Kashmir --- that this development can only be considered a disaster for the hundreds of millions of people in the region.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars should be a bestseller
This book isn't just for enforcement people. For someone like me who isn't a law officer and just wants to understand how terrorists and drug traffickers work, this book is great. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Deatiled and Highly Informative Work!
I became acquainted with James R. Richard's Transnational Criminal Organizations, Cybercrime, and Money Laundering : A Handbook for Law Enforcement Officers, Auditors, and Financial Investigators when it was used as a text in Utica College's Economic Crime Management Master of Science Degree program in the Advanced Economic Crime as well as the Legal Concepts of Criminal Fraud and Corporate Criminal Liability graduate courses. After quickly thumbing through it, I immediately recognized that it truly contains a bounty of useful, pertinent and relevant information.5-0 out of 5 stars A very good choice!
My father wrote this book.Even though I am only eleven years old I already want his job.I love to read and learn and I am very interested in this field.I read his book and I can finally understand what he's talkingabout at the dinner table! He now tells me about his cases in the car andI love hearing about them. This book helped me learn about things Iwouldn't have learned about in college. It really opened my eyes to whatwas out there.Good work daddy! 5-0 out of 5 stars Hard cases make bad law?
On the contrary, says Leo Katz: hard cases _expose_ bad law and force us to correct it. The flaws in apparently sound principles aren't always obvious when we apply them only to easy cases.5-0 out of 5 stars The Legal Theorist as Storyteller
I was one of Leo Katz' students in the first criminal law course he taught following the publication of this book, at the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor.Very justifiably BA&GM was one of the requiredtexts, as this book as as good a literary recreation of a professor'spedagogy as I have ever read. The book not only conveys Professor Katz'humor and intellectual curiosity, but also shows how brilliant he is tobring in subjects you might not at first consider germane to penal theoryand law, but that afterwards you will not be able to think about criminallaw *apart* from: analytic philosophy, "alternative history", theclassics of American literature, and a host of fascinating stories from avariety of cultures and situations. You don't have to be a lawyer, or eveninterested in things criminal, to enjoy this book. It's one of those booksthat can change the way you think about situations in your life. Thoroughly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating use of law, philosophy, and history
Leo Katz, a professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania, has a wonderful way of blending philosophy, history, sociology, and law togetherto present a compelling discussion about conundrums of law.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
I can think of no other text that explains politics in Latin America better. The authors provide an outstanding review of history, culture, religion and revolution in Latin America. Moreover, the research of Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Argentina, Chile and Brazil by assorted scholars in part two of the text is excellent.Anyone who wants a deeper understanding of Latin America must read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid book, but with a major editing error
The work Kuper put into this book is terrific (one can see where Foer got his inspiration, as "How Soccer Explains the World" reads like an attempt to write a new version of this book). However, it seems that the folks at Nation Books (or whomever was in charge of updating this book) has made a blunder with Kuper's words. Since they decided to change the name of the book from "Football Against the Enemy" (the original title, if I recall) to "Soccer Against the Enemy", they also decided to change references inside the book from "football" to "soccer". While this change is no problem in itself, it appears that the editors may have ran Kuper's text through a "find/replace" program, because now EVERY time the word "football" should be mentioned, it has been changed to "soccer", even if it messes up the grammar or meaning of the sentence. For example, when Kuper referres to the position of "an American Football Quarterback" the text reads "an American Soccer Quarterback", which makes no real sense. Or the "corrected" sentence that reads, in part, "they saw or even bought a World Cup bumper sticker that depicted a soccer covered by barbed wire" (page 215), where it should read as either "a football" or even "a soccer ball." This happens in many parts of the book, and detracts from the fantastic work Kuper has done.

5-0 out of 5 stars The politics of sport
Finally available in the U.S., this is essentially the same book as Football Against the Enemy, which was originally published in England in 1994, with an additional chapter touching on the connection between soccer, terrorism, and the Middle East.According to FourFourTwo magazine, this is the number one football/soccer book ever. The author travels to Croatia, Russia, the Ukraine, Argentina, South Africa, and many other venues famous and obscure, talks to the people that matter, and focuses on telling stories about the beautiful game and the people who play it, own it, use it, and live it, while including great insights on the cultural and political issues that surround this truly international sport.Much better than "How Soccer Explains the World," the people, places, and stories in this book remain as vivid and relevant as ever.As you read how an East Berlin fan of "Western" teams was stalked for years by the East German secret police, you realize that international soccer is much more than a sport. Not just for soccer fans, this is also highly recommended to anyone interested in politics or travel. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars PC Theory
It is tough to rebut a work like this. It is a rambling, incoherent series of stream of consciousness, conclusory mish mash. The authors believe that we are supposed to believe their arguments by authority.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the new, but acquainted CRT reader
This is an excellent array of essays and articles from the legal genre of Critical Race Theory. I recommend reading Kimberle Crenshaw's Critical Race Theory: A Reader to begin with. This would be part 2 so to speak. After that, I would recommend reading the following: Devon Carbado's Black Men on Race, Gender and Sexuality; Adrien Wing's Critical Race Feminism and Global Critical Race Feminism; and of course, last but not least anything and everything by Derrick Bell.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Understanding Israel's Current Conflic
Fascinating book tracing the ideological and judicial development of Simon Agranat.Agranat's changes over time mirrored Israel's and reflected the tensions within the developing state of Israel-- democracy and pluralism versus unity and nation-building, progressivism and universality versus particularism, human rights versus "security," etc. The sections on the Eichmann trial and the ongoing "Who is a Jew" controversy are the most powerful sections, while other sections, such as that on the powers of the Attorney General, are a bit dense. Since Israel is still confronting virtually all of the issues and conflicts which Agranat faced as a judge over many decades, this book provides essential historical background and context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winner of the 1998 Gratz College Centennial Book Award
"This is a judicial biography in the grand style, one which looks notonly at the central actor, but at the law he influenced as well as thetimes in which he lived. We learn not only about Agranat, but about Israel, and about an area on which relatively little has been written in English, the development of Israeli constitutional law and the impact of Americanlegal traditions on that development."Dr. Melvin Urofsky Director,Center for Public Policy, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond,Virgini ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not Great
This book is adequate as a textbook, but it's not a great resource for what's really going on out in the world. I felt it was very academic--which can be a good thing, but I think high school students will want something a little more practical. "Street" Law should be something more connected to the streets....I just didn't think this book did the job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Street Law: A Course In Practical Law
This books gives a great overview of law related education.Students areintroduced to legal issues in the context of real life. It containspractical information for dealing with various legal problems.Studentslearn how to write to a member of Congress. This book has a section thatallows students to consider and decide the outcome of legal situations. They learn variations in local law and prodedures that focus attention onwhere the student lives. Over all I would suggest this book as a greattraining tool for the law related class study.

5-0 out of 5 stars A coherent guide for the average citizen
As a high school student who studied with this textbook, I learned terms and concepts that I could immediately apply to current events. The news on TV and in newspapers about cases were suddenly understandable to me and Ifelt connected with justice and reason.I recommend "Street Law: ACourse in Practical Law" to anyone who wants a detailed andinformative, yet comprehensive guide to the law, from torts and criminallaw, to business and family law. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars too much rethoric about free market
this is very interesting book providing a huge amount of useful data about different health systemsin the world, although the presentation is scattered, irregular and according to the Authors` design, more than to a planned and rational description. Their interpretation of the data provided is not always acceptable. They use the old tactic of attributingsomething falseto the enemy to attack it. They create a "myth" about national health sysemswhcih nobody ever stated or believed and they used it to show the weakness of NHS. After completing the book I was even more convinced of the benefit of health systems such as those existing in Europe and in canada compared to the US. Their critique by the Authorsmight indeed beuseful in spotting theirlimitations ( obody says they are perfect) and correcting them

5-0 out of 5 stars How Sould Health Care Be Funded And Distributed?
Is it the mess we have now, single-payer or something else? Health care and health insurance are not delivered effectively to all Americans in the framework of the free enterprise system. I am a big believer in the markets and the free enterprise system for most services and most products. However, health care and health insurance do not fit for many reasons in free markets. There must be a better way to be care for the health of our people.
5-0 out of 5 stars Health Care in the Hands of Bureaucrats
There is little disagreement among stakeholders in the U.S. health care system--patients, insurers, physicians, policy analysts, and the like--that America's health care system must change to adjust to the twenty-first century. But what to do?

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Taiwan's history
As the title of my review implies, this is a valuable volume for the person who is interested in developing an understanding of the complex forces that shape Taiwan today.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very interesting book about Taiwan history
I was born in Taiwan and completed my college education in Taiwan. The Chinese history text books focus on the story of the mainland China. I have not known too much about Taiwan. For some reasons my grandparents and parents did not talk too much about it either.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Even-handed, thorough, and accurate"
Review by Prof. Shelley Rigger, the top U.S. scholar on Taiwan, in TOPICS magazine, May 2003: "Nowhere else will readers find such an even-handed, thorough, and accurate account of Taiwan's recent history. What is more, the book is a pleasure to read, balancing rich historical details and anecdotes with thoughtful analysis. Roy's book provides the most complete and in-depth account of Taiwan's post-World War II political development available in English. However, much of the value of the book comes from his determination to situate the island's postwar history in the context of Taiwan's pre-war experience. As a result, Roy is able to offer satisfying answers to some of the most puzzling issues facing students of contemporary Taiwan, including islanders' complicated feelings toward Japan, China--even Taiwan itself." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Achieving the Impossible: A Successful African History Survey
Paul Nugent has writtenone of the most impressive single-volume texts on African history--with a good chance that it is the best. This book reads smoothly while covering a vast continental terrain, including north Africa; and explores issues, questions, episodes in great depth.Nugent is able to handle complexity without drowning the reader in it. Perhaps, though, the most impressive aspect of this volume is Nugent's careful judgment. He also offers new themes to consider. For maps, charts, statistics, lists, the book is also excellent. It took a long time for this to be produced says the author. It was time well-spent. From the 1950s to now, Africa has never been treated better. The book is fresh. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Well For This Newcomer/Latecomer to Word
The book weighs a ton and there's lots packed in it.Have not attempted to use the CD-ROM.Index helped me find specific answers to specific issues, since I don't know the program at all and had to hit the ground running.Have not been able to find answers to more esoteric matters, but the book has been invaluable for my quick-fix situations.Legal-specific and more useful on a daily basis than the "Dummies" book my boss bought.Thank you, Payne Consulting Group!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard for MS Word in Law Firms
Any law firm that uses MS Word has been influenced by the work of Payne Consulting.Payne Consulting was in a conference that went into a committee that worked closely with MS to influence Word and to make it compatible to what law firms got used to with Word Perfect.Interestingly, Word finally has a feature that offers you the opportunity to recover documents if you had not saved it the day before.....wow.....why didn't they do that for corporations.
