5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful and practical advice
This Manual has been an invaluable resource for our office. Our office is the Trustee for Special Needs Trusts, and having such practical advice in one book has been extremely helpful for our staff. It is readable, cogent, and well organized. It is a useful tool for attorneys and non-attorneys who are trying to better understand the many issues involved with coordinating public benefits and special needs trusts. The information that itprovides on Trust Administration is very useful information for anyone who is a Trustee of a Special Needs Trust. Our office is purchasing multiple copies because it is sucha a helpful resource.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Basic Guide for Trustees of Special Needs Trusts
Coordination of public benefits and special needs trusts are a complicated matter.I like this affordable guide because it doesn't confuse by trying to give the reader a law degree like some books. It gives straight forward, practical answers that go a long way to explaining day to day administration, particularly for the family member or professional fiduciary that doesn't have a lot of prior experience with government programs and special needs trusts. While it uses Massachusetts examples for some of the programs that could become dated over time, it makes an effort to be generic and timeless, and 95% of the content is good anywhere at anytime.I draft special needs trusts naming Trustees with a wide range of experience, from zero to full time, and I will be sending a copy of this guide to all of them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliance, Scholarship, and Common Sense
For any reader seriously interested in a sophisticated, nuanced, and intensely informative analysis of a political andreligious movement and culture that now dominates the world stage, Prof. Roxanne Euben's "Enemy In The Mirror" is a bracing, eye-opening work of depth and power. Euben examinesIslamic Fundamentalism on its own terms, and with its own series of definitions and directions, rather than opts for the distinctly "Western" reading that so reflexively and arrogantly permeates so much discussion of this subject. It's the difference between the author who is content to point a finger at her subject and say "they're different!" and an author of Euben's intelligence and caliber, who finds it infinitely more compelling to ask, "WHY are they different?" and then goes about trying to answer the question and , perhaps more importantly, understand the answer. Enriching and essential reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rich and Original Work
It has always been more than a little embarrassing that scholars of political thought who purport to address "universal" and "timeless" questions of political life have displayed such provincial disregard for political texts, thinkers, and traditions that are located beyond the shores of Western Europe and North America. It is no less embarrassing that so many contemporary representatives of this "tradition" of political thought have either ignored powerful religio-political movements in the "West" and "non-West," or have sought to interpret those movements from within the tired and familiar analytic frameworks that have dominated Anglo-American political science for at least the past half-century. In this impressive and remarkably ambitious book, Roxanne Euben makes considerable headway in correcting both of these parochial tendencies, while also casting considerable light on the nature and significance of Islamic fundamentalist challenges to the commitments of Western rationalism.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
save your money and buy a book that really intent to help you on your Series 7 test.

1-0 out of 5 stars STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK
This book is completely useless. This book could be useful for someone with no prior knowledge on investing BUT it's very unlikely as the person who wrote this book had typos throughout the book. I have a problem with buying a book that says "Series 7 exam prep" and discusses nothing about the exam. Not worth the money spent , i wouldn't even buy it used. PAGE 66 ...the word on the first paragraph should be "manage" not "mange" although at some points of this book i really thought it was in french. So useless.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total Waste of Money
This book is absolutely useless. The information provided is not connected in any relevant way to the Series 7 test and does not give any more insight into 'thinking like a stockbroker' than would a copy of Barron's or the Economist. In fact, go buy the latest issue of Barron's, save $15, and get a lot more articles. You can feel almost immediately that this book was made simply to cash in on anxious Series 7 test takers. You do not need this book; it is an expensive and unnecessary way to acquaint yourself with information otherwise available. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars American Foreign Policy: Past, Present, Future
Hastedt's book is a well worded and actually rather objective perusal of American foreign policy from its root in the 18th century to President Clinton's decisions to go into Bosnia. I read this book towards the beginning of this year and was surprised about how up to date it was. The writing is very easy to follow and the book follows a very strong methodological format -- beiniing with the theoretical underpinnings of US foreign policy, then on to its early history, then to models of decisionmaking. This section as well is quite good -- it shows the decisionmaking models in the context of the Cuban Millsile crisis, Grenada, and also some about Bush and Desrt Storm/Desert Shield. The section on the Cuban Missile Crisis itself is somewhat misleading, but Halstedt's greatest strength is his assesments of the future of American international engagement. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reply to Zetterling
I am not familiar with Nikias Zetterling's studies, but I hope they are not as strangely flawed and misleading as his reading. He alleges that my book fails to mention German studies of countries other than Britain. However, I repeatedly emphasize that all other countries were extensively covered by the Germans (pp. 50, 53, 55-7, 61-2, 71-2, 86-7, 94), while I elaborately explain why it was the British armour model that influenced them so decisively from early on. Zetterling specifically claims that I `completely ignore' the Soviet connection, citing pages in my book (86f) to demonstrate his point. He obviously looked at the wrong pages, for I present the exact nature of this connection on pp. 74-76. In recent years, with the revival of interest in the Soviet `Deep Battle', some writers have speculated that there was a significant Soviet influence on the evolution of the Panzer arm, supporting their claim (like Zetterling) by vague circumstantial allusions. Analyzing the actual evidence, I show why Soviet developments were well known to but barely influential on the Germans. Indeed, documentary evidence is a crucial subject here, and again the reviewer is skating on very thin ice. He cites only the material in the highly important German military periodical Militrwochenblatt, apparently because this is the only source with which he is familiar. He fails to mention that my book relies not only on additional German open publications and much other miscellaneous evidence, but indeed, most notably, also on the interwar, mostly unpublished documents of German Intelligence, Operations, and Command of the Armoured Troops. Curiously enough, these documents were not studied in the many popular treatments written on the rise of the Panzer arm. Some of these documents, particularly the reports of the German military attach in London Geyer von Schweppenburg on the British armour manoeuvres and on Liddell Hart's lessons from them, which were eagerly awaited in Berlin, are truly amazing (pp. 63-66). Indeed, as I demonstrate, the German Panzer divisions, created in 1935, were closely modeled on the pioneering British experimental Mobile Division of 1934. Inter alia this included the mixing of light and medium tank companies in the tank battalions. Zetterling reveals to us, in line with rather than in contrast to my own reference (p. 87), that the German abandoned this practice in the last stage of WWII. It apparently does not occur to him that the issue in question is how the Germans came to adopt this particular practice in the first place, before the war and during their initial campaigns. Indeed, pace the reviewer, while tracing the internal sources and development of German doctrine (pp. 49-50, 68-74, 92-3), the book explains how the German lack of both armoured vehicles and armoured troops until 1934 made the German army so heavily dependent on foreign models which it avidly studied, particularly the leading British one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Impression
The book is divided into two parts. the first covers Liddell Hart and his thoughts on armoured warfare between WWI and WWII. Gat thoroughly discusses the subject and successfully shows that much of the critisism vented on Liddell Hart is incorrect. This part of the book is very good. Gat makes use of sources overlooked by e.g. Mearsheimer and can present a picture of Liddell Hart that is quite diffeent from the one dominant the last decade or so.5-0 out of 5 stars redressing an injustice
This book tackles the issue of the development of doctrine and theory of armored warfare in Europe between the wars. Gat opens with the controversy surrounding the famous figure of Basil Liddell Hart. The famous theoristwas much acclaimed until research by John Mearsheimer in 1988 (see"Liddell Hart and the Weight of History" by that author) largelydiscredited him. Azar Gat, has done some careful research that goes quite away to restore the reputation of Liddell Hart. Gat investigates the variousroles played by the theorists J.F.C. Fuller and Liddell Hart in fashioningarmored fighting doctrines in Europe between the wars. The theory itself isdescribed and analyzed in detail. There is also an extensive historicalreview of developments, with emphasis placed on the events in Germany. The analyses and discussion are intricate indeed, and this book is notintended to be light reading. The work is purely academic, and ranges frominteresting to tedious. It is suited to academics of this field, officersand others occupying this niche. Anyone in need of research material mustget his/her hands on this book. I rated it as deserving five stars, as itis indeed of high quality, although a star-rating is perhaps notappropriate for books of this level and category. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captures even the smell of "the burnt cakes"
Alfred, being the only English monarch styled "the Great", is a notoriously difficult subject to write history about. The Victorian cult of Alfred made him a marked man for the debunkers of the Dead White European Male focus of history.Attempts at an even-handed review of the Wessex king's life are fraught with peril.4-0 out of 5 stars Worth a read
I enjoyed this book and, unlike some others, was engrossed by the military expeditions of Alfred the Great. The author gives enough information that one can well imagine how incredible it was indeed to fight off the Vikings. Further, the defensive works and the creation of the burghs led to modern economic England, and this point is brought out quite well.

4-0 out of 5 stars An informative and easily accessible read
I bought this book on the recommendation of a professor of mine when embarking upon my senior thesis this spring, and though Abel's book did not end up playing a large part in my paper, I went back to this book after theterm was over. This book was an easy, quick, and absorbing read, whileinformative, cohesive, and clear in its aims and the points it was tryingto express. My only criticism might be a minor one -- As an English major,I am more interested in the ideological, cultural, or literary influence orviews of an individual.Naturally, as a history professor, Abels interestswere not the same as mine.He devotes a lot of the book to details ofAlfred's battles with the Vikings, and at times, this failed to hold myattention. This criticism, as a result, is only the result of a personalpreference. ... Prof. Maoz analyzes the evidence underlying the basic beliefs about Israel's military policy and history, held by most Israelis and supporters of Israel. From a pro-Israel perspective, Maoz's work is a call for change within Israel to promote new institutions that would lead to non-military solutions. The chapter pointing out the flaws in Israel's nuclear policy is extremely important in view of the current nuclear build-up in Iran. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Why we're in this mess
Mutz explains very clearly how and why political conversation in this country is stilted, unsatisfying and so often leads to more misunderstanding. She explains that the goody-two-shoes vision of democracy -- where we would all understand one another if we just had all the facts and listened -- is a fantasy. It's an excellent combination of social psychology and political science. After reading this you'll understand politics (and American society) in a much deeper way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicately put
An eloquently written piece that will be finished in a few sittings, Suu Kyi's Letters from Burma is a collection of short essays she submitted to the Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shinbun.
5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than just a book !
This is not just a book.Along with Aung San Suu Kyi's two other major books ("Freedom from Fear" and "Voice of Hope"), this book is destined to be at the heart of the struggle - and eventually the victory - for democracy in Burma.Among the three, this is the one I found most wonderful.Vivid, direct, it makes the reader feel as if she/he is listening to Suu Kyi, with her wonderful Asian voice and Oxford accent.Suu Kyi talks about Burma, about her people, about herself. She tells of the tragedies of her people, in the most natural and serene way, as if she were telling of everyday life - because indeed, this is the Burmese everyday life. She does not inflate things, she does not push for her views, yet she reaches the reader's heart immediately - at least she did with me !She simply expresses views and feelings along with plenty of thrilling facts and anecdotes.I can't imagine of any reader who won't love this book and won't feel inspired by this account from Burma's heroine. After reading this and the other books, I felt so close to Burma's struggle that I absoliutely had to go there and meet Suu in person. So I did, I took off for Burma and managed to meet her.I had met many world personalities before, but this was truly a unique event in my life. The pages of the book kept coming back to my mind, as I could finally see the source of all that strength and hope, the incarnation of Burma's struggle. In the end I was deported from Burma for having made contact with her.Now these books are my inspiration to keep fighting on for democracy in Burma in all ways I can.

4-0 out of 5 stars great read
As this book is a compilation of 52 letters written to be published as a weekly installment in a Japanese newspaper (each 2 or 3 pages long), it is an easy book to pick up when you have a few minutes.(In New York, wewould call it a great subway read - you can read a letter or two betweenwhen you get on the subway and when you have to get off.)The letterscombine Aung San Suu Kyi's political beliefs and accounts of the remarkablework of her political party (the National Democratic League) with vividdescriptions of Burmese culture and countryside. There are probably otherbooks that focus solely on either the politics or the culture of Burma thatdo a more comprehensive job of describing it, but this seems like a greatintroduction to both. ... This is one of those books that only sells because it is assigned to students that have to read it for class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook
In the past several years, I have examined numerous comparative politics textbooks, and I have found Michael Sodaro's to be among the very best. While other textbooks, like Roskin's, are good on countries, but not concepts, and others (like Hague's), are excellent on concepts but weaker on countries, Sodaro's textbook has a good (maybe the best) mix of both. His language is approachable, he teaches an analytical skill (hypothesis testing) that will be useful in other contexts, and he asks some of the best scholars to write empirical chapters. While other books might be better at introducing specific subjects to undergraduates (like ideologies), I think Michael Sodaro has done a fine job of giving students a broad overview to the discipline.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I'm currently reading this for an Intro to Comparative Politics class, and I can honestly say that it is the worst textbook I've had to read, in either High School or College. For starters, only 8 of the 22 chapters are spent on actually comparing the political systems of various countries. The other 14 are spent on "Concepts and Critical Thinking."To be sure, a basic explanation of of democratic and authoritarian rule is in order.Sodaro, however, spends 4 chapters (7-10) "explaining" democracy. This explanation, however, in addition to consisting primarily of repetition of various points already made in earlier chapters, is overly simplistic, inordinately long, and often somewhat patronizing. He spends more time on explaining the scientific method than he does on explaining Electoral systems, Presidentialism, Parliamentary forms of government, and Presidential-Parliamentary forms of government, combined. If it was not so lengthy, I would be tempted to suggest it for politics/government students in either middle or possibly early high school. However, given its length and patronizing attitude towards the reader, I wonder whether it would encourage a student's interest in the subject, or simply drive him or her away.It has certainly left a bad taste in my mouth. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars a classic
Although written more than twenty years ago, Linz's theory is applicable to countries and events today, often with dead-on accuracy. His writting is scholarly, yet understandable. It provides an insightful look inside the political processes of a crumbling democracy, and more than answers the question "What makes Democracy fall apart?" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A realistic look
The reviewers who give this book a bad rating must have picked up the book expecting a pageturner. This book is not one, in the least. That being said; this book is an excellent academic resource and fairly interesting. But I say 'interesting' from the point of view of a political fanatic. If you are joe shmo you will probably abondon this book after the first chapter.
1-0 out of 5 stars If you want history dont read this...
What this book does not cover. How did Putin get in office? The country was getting ready to elect a communist government. How did he gain an advantage?Corruption. How is he corrupt, GO into that please. The only way you can be in charge of Russia is with the US help. Please tell the real story please.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Journalists book
This book is horrible. Basically a vacuous stream of consciousness motif that raises more questions than answers, but not thought provoking questions, just: what if this / what if that / I think this / others think that / and the latest poll X says 17% of Russians believe Y.
