4-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anyone wanting to learn the truth about what happened in Rwanda and why!
This isn't about justifying the atrocious acts of Hutus against Tutsi in Rwanda, but about trying to understand WHY. There were reasons for the madness that went beyond ethnic differences. Read this book before passing judgement.

3-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Sledding
Respected scholar Mahmood Mamdani offers his take on the causes of the Rwandan attempted genocide of the Tutsis and how Rwanda ought to handle the aftermath.A longtime denizen of the ivory tower, Mamdani is not writing for general audiences here: his prose is denser than a nineteenth century Supreme Court opinion and often makes finer distinctions.
5-0 out of 5 stars When Victims become killers
A great book that is doing justice to the people that were rudely touched by the genocide. History plays a great part in influencing and explaining particular events that happen in the present but many people forget and view the event as inexplicable. Those who forget to ask the 'why' question are always liable to repeat the blunders of history since they never learn from its ugly mistakes. Prof. Mamdani is trying to undo this mistake. Many, especially in the west from their self righteous pedestal, look at the Rwandan genocide and judge. Mamdani goes behind the scenes of history to dig out the 'why' of this ugliest of human ventures. Drawing heavily on Franz Fanon, he casts a wide net covering the whole Great Lakes Region and Colonialism through the cold war, to tell us that the victims of injustice can only be free if they kill the oppressor. To become human they must deny life to the oppressor. The irony is, to overcome the monster of injustice, you must surpass its monstrosity, leading to the cycle of violence. Americans who read this book will come to understand better the whyness of 9/11; the Europeans will understand Hitler and Africans will grasp the whyness of so many coup d'etats, and finally an insight that is long overdue will dawn on us all and we will see the light. We will understand that without justice in the world those who work for peace labor but in vain. A must read book for serious peacemakers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Piece of Work!!!...
This book is required reading for our departments' promotional exam to Corporal/Detective.Of the many such books I've read, this text is by far the most practical. It lays out the solid and (I think) timeless tools and techniques of basic investigative skills. This book is much easier to read than others in the category, and the author backs up his theory with case law.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book by great professor
I was fortunate to have Dr. Brown as an instructor and advisor. His intelligence and no-nonsense attitude come through in his writing. This fascinating topic is explained by a seasoned homicide veteran and scholar, and unlike many other text books, this one is worth reading. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good as a broad survey, but a little tedious at times
I just finished reading this book because it is on the suggested reading list that I received from the law school I am entering this fall.As far as a broad survey which puts the American legal system in a broad context, this book does a very good job. However, as I got to the last hundred pages or so, it turned to a lengthy and at times redundant expression of a thesis that the author had already suggested several times in the book. And really, like a lot of scholarly arguments, this one isn't all that enlightening. What would have been more useful (for me at least) is a more indepth treatment of the specific subject matter which the chapters are divided into. For this kind of survey I would suggest Law 101 by Jay M. Feinman

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the American legal system
If you want a reasonably good understanding of the what, how, and why of the American legal system without having to go to law and grad school, this is the book for you.Friedman, in just over 300 pages of text, manages to cover the entire field of law in America, from legislation through administration to judgment, from the workings of the local sewer district to the trappings of the Supreme Court.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hypocrite
This guy encourages activist judges. In other words, he wants judges to violate their oath of office.Translation? He wants judges to undermine your vote by playing legislator. He also wants judges to lie, because when they violate the oath of upholding the laws of the land, they are liers. Why don't we bend the rules and charge Duncan Kennedy for capital crimes without any facts, without any evidence of any kind and without any trial?Or does he want to delimit his anarchy? If so, who draws the line of demarcation?Duncan Kennedy?I think so.This guy is an egomaniac. He belongs with Charles Manson and Unibomber.I'm sure he would oppose activist judges who ignored Roe v. Wade.He just wants activist judges that are tolerated to the extent they are coterminus with Duncan Kennedy's agenda.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why do courts do what they do?
There can be no remaining doubt, after Gore v. Bush, that the U.S. Supreme Court is nakedly ideological. But so is every other court, and Duncan Kennedy explains why in this masterful summary of the decisively insightful critical legal studies movement. It just will not do, in the new millenium, to continue to deny the influence of ideology on judges when any hope for political progress depends on law and its institutions. We must at least carry on a good faith debate which honestly confronts the bad faith of judges. The critique is the place to start, and the movement deserves the attention of every person interested in honest discourse about the future of both law and politics. No single work available today is a better starting place for understanding the critique. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Text on Modern Russian Politics
I used this book with some success in my upper division course on Russian politics. The book addresses Russian politics after the implosion of the Soviet system. The book is comprehensive, but its attention to detail does not destract the reader from main points. This is important, because textbooks often become unreadable due to excessive irrelevant information. This in not the case with Remington's book. The writing style is rather pedestrian, but for a textbook, it is more than adequate. This book cover events in Russia up until 1997, so this book, or at least this edition is a bit dated. Events in Russia are changing very fast, and the author is not responsible for not being able to churn out a textbook that is 100 percent up to date. For a more popular analysis of events in Russia afer 1991 see David Remnick's "Resurrection." I recommend this textbook for any undergraduate class in Russian politics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Remington's Politics in Russia
I have twice used Remington's Politics in Russia as a text in my Russia Politics course for intermediate political science students.-- It is an excellent text for students. Most of my students thought the book wasreadable, comprehensive, sufficiently detailed, and clear. -- It is anexcellent text from which to teach, comparative in nature, adequatelycomprehensive, short (244 pages), and without a strong personalbias.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ABA Guide to Workplace Law
This order was received earlier than expected and has proved a useful reference guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Issues In The Workplace
The issues covered include the Family and Medical Leave Act, harassment and discrimination, drug testing, the Americans with Disabilities Act, unions, worker's compensation, dress codes and worker's rights.
3-0 out of 5 stars Better than most other offerings
First, remember that the book was written in 1997. It's dated. It also appears to have been organized by dropping the sections together from around ten feet above the pages while standing in a strong wind - that is to say, the format and sequencingis not what it could be these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars a fine collection on contemporary Istanbul
This volume, Istanbul: Between the Global and Local, contains a series of essays on contemporary society in Istanbul, with an emphasis on the ways in which globalization has interacted with local realities in that city. While the essays are not always strong, many of them are, with the essays by Keyder, Martin Stokes, and Jenny White worthy of particular note. For students of Middle Eastern or Turkish culture and cultural politics, this volume is well worth while. For people with more general interests, it is probably too specialized.Below is the table of contents:
4-0 out of 5 stars Changing Istanbul
This is not a Travel Guide. It is an anatomy of a cosmopolitan city. The book is about changing Istanbul in last 100 years with most of the emphasis is given to last 50 years when the real change occured. It is about the strugle between secular city view and traditional or Islamic city view for Istanbul. How the mayors tried to give different images to Istanbul based on their political affiliations. How migration from rural areas into cities specifically into istanbul changed the city, it's image and social structure. Although I have my doubts that those who set the policies had the image of the city in mind or if the result was by product of their policies is questionable but two different views constantly reshaped the city.5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating reconceptualization of global/local in Istanbul
This book is a must for anyone seriously interested in Istanbul. Not a travel guide, this book is a collection of essays by Turkish scholars addressing the cultural and material significance of both the"global-city project" in Istanbul and the influx of migrants fromrural Turkey. Keyder's brilliant analyses (he contributes three essays tothe collection) are matched by the other contributions, all of which arehistorically and theoretically grounded. Anyone interested in urbanstudies, world-cities, the global/local dialectic or Turkey today willbenefit from reading this book. ... Read more
