I'm not employed by a tax lawyer
This would probably be a great book for a law student, but not for a lay person. I consider myself to be fairly intelligent, but I had a bit of difficulty wading through this to find the little bit of info that I needed.I'm sure it's also a great book for someone with a tax background.

A must for every teacher.
This book covers school law in a clear and concise manner.The language is easily understood and should be on the desk of every teacher who is concerned about the welfare of children.

Contracts in a Nutshell
Thank you so much for a nutshell version of contracts!It's all beginning to make sense now!I believe this book was key in helping me to pass this, not so much fun, class!

This Book Saved My Life!!!
Some time around mid-semester, I was hopelessly lost and confused in my contracts last. In my despair, I bought this book. It opened up my eyes and lifted the fog of contracts for me. My final grade in the class was much better than I hoped for and I have to partly thank this book for that. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is that it is useful for bare bones knowledge of contracts, and shouldn't be used to replace attending class and taking good notes.

A Must Read!
This book is as simple as it gets. Contract law is one of the more complex subjects in law school. Any material that adds complexity to an already challenging subject has little value especially to 1L's and even bar candidates. Understanding the basics of the subject is crucial. That is why this book stands out from the rest. I have read the casebook, a hornbook in this jurisdiction as well as various textbooks in a foreign jurisdiction. Not very good, but the only thing out there
This book, like most of the other nutshells I've read, is not particularly helpful. The organization is confusing, and not enough attention is devoted to major topics, as the format is primarily just a recitation of cases. A study guide is supposed to provide a concise synopsis of the law, not merely throw a bunch of conflicting cases at the reader. Steven Emanuel has the market for law school study aides cornered, with the Examples & Explanations series a distant second. Unfortunately, this is the only major study guide that exists for employment law. Thanks to Rothstein's worthless and maddening casebook, learning employment law is neither interesting nor fun. This nutshell will provide some relief, but not much.

Great reference guide
I am a manager for a Federal Govt Agency.I found this book informational and easy to understand.Immigration law is a complex subject.The book is easy to read and addresses many important aspects related to this subject.The sections related to inadmissability, removal are well written and easy to understand.The chapters related to the history of various classes of immigrants was intersting as well.I would recommend the book for persons who want to expand their knowledge of this topic.

The book provides a good academic discussion
This book makes no pretensions to be the ultimate compendium for the practitioners in the immigration field.As the author points out in the preface, this book is meant to give you a brief overview of the subject.And that it did!It provides succint and stimulating discussions in many pertinent topics.Most importantly, the flow of the discussions is not bogged down by chaotic juxtaposition of law and facts that is usually usually associated with works written by the practitioners.In short, this book presents you with the picture of the forest rather than the individual shots of trees.I highly recommend it.

Gives a general overview, not for beginner, not for pro.
I work for a law firm and am planning on going to a law school. I got into the immigration field by pure accident but I had a great deal of research done through working on actual cases. This book gives a very good general overview of the immigration law and procedure, but it does not list the details of "HOW?" only some of "WHY?".Read more

This is THE book to read if you are Law School bound
I wasted my money on other books. The biggest waste of money was Law School Confidential. By Law in a Nutshell and don't waste your money on other books. It was terrific! It was even humorous.

Buy It, Borrow It, Just Get It.
The single best book that I have found which really does explain the study and practice of law, hence the title.

Helpful, not a must have

One of the best in the series!
I'm a law student and a big Nutshell fan. This is definitely one of the best Nutshells in the series. It's clear, it's organized, and it covers a broad array of issues in corporate governance and operation. I think it would make a better text than the bulky casebooks we're forced to carry around. It's a must-have for law students, aspiring corporate lawyers, and anyone needing a quick reference on general corporate law.

I am in Government Contracting and this book is very informative and can be used as a ver good tool.
Needs Editing
The book is certainly packed with a lot of valuable information, and I suggest purchasing it if you plan on writing any government proposals, or managing government contracts.Just be prepared to filter through a lot of bad editing, spelling errors, sentences that make no sense, incorrect wording that render the sentence incorrect, and, at certain times, words that do not exist.For example, the word "definitized" appears many times; and I don't think the government has ever "estopped" invoking ceiling price limitations.

Good for the beginner who has basic knowledge of contracts
I bought this book because I have to be involved in oil and gas transaction. It is very useful to cover basic cases and theories on this business area. However, because this book presumes that they understand the basic concepts of contract laws and realty laws, the readers are required to know 101 of, say, what is the reminder or what is the fee simple absolute etc. If you are not educated in the country which takes case law system, before reading it, it would be better to skim through the outline of contracts/realty law.

Good book for mineral owners as well as students
The third edition of this book was very helpful, and also included more recent case law cites than the second edition. I would assume this it true with the fourth as well (and there have been quite a few post 1995 court cases affecting royalty payments among other things). John Lowe is a well-respected professor of oil and gas law and has written many papers as well as several books on the subject.I find his writing style easy to understand, even for a layman like myself.I also found it to be much more than a "nutshell" approach in that the explanations of complicated ideas are fairly complete in most cases. A must have for a criminal procedure class
This book is a clear and concise rendition of the law regarding criminal procedure.It includes all the cases that one would find addressed in a criminal procedure class.This book is worth its weight in gold if you area law student.It not only substituted flawlessly for my textbook (whichincidentally was written by the same two authors) but it was much easier tounderstand.The nuthsell series is one of the best outline seriesavailable in my opinion. I should point out however that the format is notthat of a traditional law outline.It reads like a book rather than like aregular bulletted outline.However I found that the narrative format madeit easy to understand the material.And unlike other outlines, this bookcan stand on its own for a quick overview of a topic rather than othertraditional outlines which require some familiarity with the subject beforethe outline makes any sense.I would reccomend this book and this seriesto anyone who needs to learn (quickly) about an area of law. ... An excellent introduction
An excellent introduction to International Human Rights. I enjoyed the extensive bibliography and the objectivity (not neutrality) of the author's commentaries.

all bark no bite
This book describes in great detail the instruments that exist to codify and protect human rights but which illustrates all too clearly the problem of inadequate enforcement instruments and procedures. The "law" empowers the UN or other bodies to "do a study" on complaints of non-compliance or violations. The creation of so many of these tools has been so politicized as to make many functions of the laws and treaties virtually useless and sometimes, apparently, contradictory (or at least open to debate and interpretation). What good is a "thorough study"? With no teeth, no authority and a backdrop of outside interfering factors (economic and political especially), these "norms" might be interpreted as existing in name only. In a section on gross violations of human rights and the UN Charter, one reads, "The required magnitude of the concept of `massive' or `gross' violations may also gradually require a lower threshold of severity as the international community becomes less tolerant of what is lawful behavior under the Charter. Viewed in this light, the human rights provisions of the Charter are `elastic clauses' whose expansion is tied to the evolving standards of international legality and decency."
In depth but HORRIBLE to read
International Human Rights in a Nutshell does one thing correctly: It spells out the law in clear, black and white language on human rights and some of the formations of the UN, EU, American System, and African States. On the other hand it is EXTREMELY hard to read as a book because all of the citations are put right in the middle of the reading; as such it doesn't flow at all. It still remains a very definitive reference that any scholar on human rights should have. ... Read more

Just wrong.
I only read the patent section, and have no knowledge of the other sections.However I have found the book to be entirely too superficial to be of any assistance.Additionally, at more than one occasion on topics that are fairly important, the information was just wrong.I have read the patent section of my IP supplements to prepare for the exam, and I by far recommend the IP hornbook.It's a little longer but WAY worth it over this book.If your library doesn't have a copy and it's too expensive for you, then try Examples and Explanations, but whatever you do, don't just rely on this book, you'll look like an idiot when you completely misstate some things.I mean 90 to 95% of it is right, I'm sure, but I'm going to get enough wrong on my own, I don't need help.

A little superficial, but okay.
Like almost all hornbooks or outlines, this one glosses over Trademark law.Copyright, Patents, and Trademarks are all taught seperately, so I don't understand why they are lumped together and glossed over superficially by almost all hornbooks.

The third edition is up to date--It is super!!!
I don't know whether or why the 2d edition would be on sale, as the first reviewer implies in his or her nevertheless good review. The third edition has been out for two years and it is complete, accessible, understandable, and better than the competition--by far! For the Discriminating Only
I'm a training specialist by trade, and I have taught Sexual Harassment Prevention and Equal Employment Opportunity classes for many years. This book allowed me to appear as a subject matter expert because I was able to offer more depth in specific cases and topics. If you're discriminating about your sources, I know you will buy this.

Useful
I read this book in order to survive a law class.I also used it when I had an interview with the Office of Civil Rights.This book may feel cursory but it covers a large array of material.For those who are constantly suspicious about facing discrimination in the workplace, it may be especially enlightening.Though I gave my copy to a friend not involved in the law, I do worry about it being misused by laypeople.For example, you could be blatantly discriminated against, and this book may point to cases that reflect your own situation.However, if you missed a statute of limitations or your employer doesn't have a sizeable number of workers, etc., your case may be a loser.Still, filing with local anti-discrimination office is supposed to be free and of no prejudice to the worker.Since this summarizes the everyday law, it is not a cute, easy read.But it is useful. ... There Are More Useful
As a first year law student, I bought this book thinking it would help me and supplement the class. However, I found this book not very useful. In fact, I found it frustrating. I would find it brief in the places I needed the most hope and long and drawn out over issues that were simple. While the book does a nice job of covering basic concepts like mens rea {sorry if spellings wrong its been two years), I felt uncomfortable using it for specific crimes. Too often because either you're working from a model code or your own state's law, this book was only good for a general perspective. In addition, I feel that if you want something to help you and something more than the Emmanuel's, I recommend the "Understanding" Series. I bought that as well for this class, and I felt it was much better written and was focused on helping you to learn the actual issues. This book should probablely be used, if at all by practitioner or individuals who have already studied the material (like for bar review). I would encourage you to go elsewhere for help in learning the material. ... Read more

An excellent summary
I've taken Professor Dobbyn's insurance class, and let me tell you that everything he said there has been boiled down to very clear and concise points in this book. It's the only book on insurance you would ever need - a must for any student taking insurance law. From basic concepts of insurance to specific rules, this book covers everything.
