I've been issued two patents using Pressman's book. The patent office issued an office action on the first patent and I used an attorney to overcome the action. The second patent was issued on my first submission.

5-0 out of 5 stars Budding inventors/entrepreneurs will want this book
As an accountant outside of the IP field, I found this to be a good tool to "round out" my business acumen.Enjoyed thepresentation of pricing models.

5-0 out of 5 stars My clients rate this book "Superb!"
Richard is a very well known authority among those of us who are involved in the technology commercialization industry. As a technology commercialization business coach, I hear regularly that Richard's advice in his books is extremely helpful in the most important areas of their work. You can count on the validity of Richard's information...he's been in the trenches and around technology commercialization for many years.
4-0 out of 5 stars Looks great so far !
I'm just through a couple of selected chapters, but I am certain that this book will provide me with an amazing outlook. It's very rounded, and includes a vast amount of information about licencing strategy, along with everything else. I suggest looking at the available images for the index (link to it somewhere on this page) and checking them out. Good stuff. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but Flawed
The strength of this book is that it provides a comprehensible introduction to intellectual property - focusing on patents. If you want to learn something about intellectual property without wading too deep into lawyerspeak - this book may interest you. In addition to patents - trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets are discussed; other aspects of intellectual property are waved at. The last chapter provides dated coverage of intellectual property as it relates to the Internet - mostly focusing on business method patents. This is interesting from a business perspective but the authors do not seem versed in the technical aspects of E-Commerce. Laches and estoppel are demystified and the bookpresents what looks like solid advice on how to enforce your rights against a group of infringers (attack the weakest one first). There are clearly divided sections (making the frequent pauses that I occasionally made between readings convenient), key ideas are highlighted in an attractive manner and charts and graphs are well presented.
4-0 out of 5 stars A clear guide to IP
This book is both concise and complete in covering the major aspects of IP.Using language and examples that are easy to understand, I found this book to be a quick intro to the fast-growing world of IP.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for Patent Law Students, by Flavio Mota
This is a useful book because it explains patent law and patent cases. It describes the relationship between the two. Furthermore, it includes good analogies that help the reader understand the hard to grasp concepts of intellectual property law. For example, the book has a very good description of Section 103--the bulk of an introductory patent law class. So, for all of the aforementioned reasons, a patent law student will appreciate this writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
I would highly recommend this book to any law student who is taking a class on patent law.Professor Mueller is an excellent writer, and she explains otherwise complex subjects in a way that is both comprehensive and easy to understand.5-0 out of 5 stars extremely helpful and comprehensive
I bought this book in preparation for my Patent Law exam, and it turned out to be much more helpful than my casebook, my other outlines, or anything my professor said in class. It is comprehensive, accessible, and very current.I would highly recommend this book to law students, lawyers, and others who need a well-written and well-researched introduction to the topic. It's simply the best in its field. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous aid for understanding how to turn your new product idea into a successful business
I launched a new product line several years ago - learning a lot along the way.I am getting ready to launch a new line of products and decided to read this book.It was a tremendous resource! So many of the answers that I had to dig for and learn the hard (and expensive) way - are contained here in one easy to read book.I highly endorse it.It is also very motivational (as you read the stories of other people) that decided to take action and turn their idea into a successful business.Well worth the price.Very well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and inspiring
Mom inventors wanting more info on what's involved in bringing a product to market will want to read this book. The book offers practical advice on researching your market, creating your product prototype, protecting your idea, manufacturing your product, and bringing your product to market.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Informational & A Must Have
This book does it all for anyone wanting to create/invent a product that they hope to bring to market.Tamara shares in a very easy-to-read format her experiences, her expertise and saves the rest of us lots of time, energy and money. Her mistakes made along the way combined with her successes that continue to grow provide the reader with a wealth of knowledge about researching, developing, patenting, protecting, marketing (and more!) an idea/invention.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Info But Non-Specific
I probably had the wrong expectations for this book but I was hoping it would (quickly) help me validate whether info I've used required permission.I suppose it did this in an indirect way, however, the free use stuff included old songs etc. that were not appropriate for my topic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, practical advice
I made the mistake of buying the first edition of this book (published in 2001), but found it to be an excellent guide to the legal issues involved with public domain textual material.I have already published one book which relied heavily on public domain materials, and am working on a second, and when I bought this book I had several specific questions that I was trying to answer. This book answered all of them, as well as some that I hadn't thought of!I'll probably end up buying the second edition, just to see what has changed in the last few years.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most useful books I have ever encountered
This fat and informative book is a goldmine for anyone interested in public domain works, whether writings, music, art, films or just about anything else. The author, Attorney Stephen Fishman, begins with an examination of copyright laws and the public domain. After that, the book begins each of the chapters on copyrightable materials with a handy checklist for use in determining public domain status, and then launches into a discussion of how to determine the public domain status of such an item. After those useful chapters, the author examines the use of copyrighted and public domain works.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful with step by step procedures
I recently purchased this book, to market one of our company product ideas. When I picked up the book locally at barnes and Nobles, I was a bit reluctant by the quality of the paper and the print. But within hours I was at my office, reading it, and it has abolutely good information. The "words of wisdom", "tricks of the trade" tips on each page are very helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Updated Version has Patent and Marketing Workbook
I found and read the first version of "The Inventor's Bible" in my local library. The book was full of so much relevant and detailed information that I knew I had to own the updated version. When it arrived, I was pleased to discover that the book included a "Patent and New Product Marketing Workbook" to help readers evaluate and profit from their inventions. Even better, you can download the pdf versions of the workbook pages from the publisher's website (Tenspeedpress). When you get to the site, search for Inventor's Bible, then click the book's title on the page that returns, and then click on the link for the complementary Inventor's Bible PDFs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Inventors - highly recommend
I found this book very helpful. I am an engineer currently working on bringing my alternative energy invention to market. Not only I found a bunch of good advice in this book but this book made me feel that even though marketing my invention will be a lot of work, it can be done.I've read several similar books ("Idiot's guide.." and "Patents to Profit") but I think what set this one apart for me were the case studies. Reading what some of the other inventors went thru, their rises and their falls, makes you feel like you are already part of that group. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The book is subpar
I bought this book as a primer reference to patents. What I got was a dictionary of words. This book pretty much is a dictionary without a lot of explanations.Really basic terms also.A lot of basic paraphrasing instead of actual text from the 35 USC manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legal Information without the Legalese
This book is easy-to-use and highly detailed with an appealing, bulleted layout and many illustrations that helped to answer most of my basic questions about the four categories of intellectual property (copyright, patents, trademarks and trade secrets).I took a graduate-level library science course on the legal aspects of information and borrowed several books on IP from the library. This Nolo Press book was the one that I kept coming back to and wound up buying.I was glad I waited for the updated 7th edition, which now includes an index. The book is divided into completely logical sections on definitions, statutes, forms and an overview, all of which make this book a joy to read. The text is written in plain English and the entries are cross-referenced and other resources are given. This is a legal book written by lawyers, but the legalese is edited out and only very useful information remains. If you need one basic legal reference book on IP, this is the one you'll keep reaching for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
This has a lot of detail and organized information that a patent applicant might use. However, it does not provide an overview quite as well as something like "Patents for Beginners" (PfB). For patent applicants, I would recommend getting both books, but someone like a jurist or an expert witness might be better served by PfB. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A convenient concise OVERVIEW
This is quick 85-page overview of the patent process. It provides the key steps, requirements, and definitions in very plain terms (almost in the same style of language as the IRS's 1040EZ instructions). However, it steers clear from giving ADVICE.If you need advice, try Patent It Yourself, from Nolo Press.
3-0 out of 5 stars Government publication that needs a new edition
This is not the first place to start if you're interested in the patent process. The law is dynamic and this book was out of date years ago. There are many other books out there that will outline the basics in a much more reliable way.Look for a book that will discuss World Trade Organization provisions and other international aspects of IP law - otherwise it's too limiting.Never choose to file for a patent application yourself.Use references to educate yourself on the process and then if you want to pursue this expensive process (which can become more expensive if you make an error) find a registered agent or attorney.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction
This book offers a simple, straightforward interoduction to patent law. If you are starting from scratch, this is a good place to start. There isn't much "how to" in this book, so it's probably best for someone who plans to work with a patent lawyer or service. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for licensors
I have studied and compared Open Source licenses for a number of years.I came to the conclusion that the licenses created by Mr. Rosen were the best and I adopted one of them for my own Open Source projects.I have also read his book on the subject and I have concluded that it is also the best in its field.I recommend his book as a must-read for licensors of Open Source content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for reference
When I recieved this book I was excited, finally I could read a book which would help my brain really understand all the licenses! I sat down to read it, and was impressed with how the author took the popular licenses and broke them down into more easily understandable. I mean, they *are* fairly straight forward, but the author gets into what they actually mean in legal terms, and that's interesting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Readable and by a Lawyer.
Open source software is growing explosively around the world. The SourceForge web site now lists 87,006 projects being done by 912,545 people. That's almost a million people writing code, probably more than all of the programmers employed by Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, etc. etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understand Legal concepts easily with this book!
I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Tonya Marie Evans at the Book Expo of America in Washington DC this year and she is a smart, enthusiastic, driven woman. This book should be required reading for anyone wishing or thinking about writing and publishing a book. This book will help you understand the process in plain english. This book clearly explains complicated legal issues, offers examples and answers your questions. This is a book you will want to keep on your desk and refer back to again and again. I recommend this to each person who sends me a book to review or asks me any type of publishing question.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written, to the point and organized!
Literary Law Guide for Authors is my 'gold medal'. I treasure this well-written and VERY easy-to-read book! I've written (self-published) a children's book and currently writing a spiritual anthology. In both cases, I desperately needed contract forms and from searching the internet and communicating briefly with the author, I ordered this book. The forms section (in addition to the CD) included every bit of information I needed to create and provide a professional looking contract. I just can't say enough of this book. TIMELY. WELL-WRITTEN. INFORMATIVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars A non common law layer comment.
An very updated text. Concise, precise and well presented. There is no bored and extensive dissertations about what should be the law of internet. This is a pragmatic view. Every topic is well documented and comes with several sugested sites to visit for reference or aditional information. 5-0 out of 5 stars Must Reading for Entrepreneurs, Inventors, and Managers
Spellbinding. I laughed. I wept. How could Xerox PARC miss a $500,000,000 patent opportunity in the graphical user interface? Easy, they didn't recognize that someone else might have a use for something they had no use for. Yes, I laughed and I cried.

2-0 out of 5 stars A book on why you should have an IP strategy
This well written book will convince you that an IP strategy is important. If you have some "entry-level" understanding of the strategic concepts related to IP, this book will be of little help. The concepts presented are of interest but they are presented from a superficial perspective. For instance, the concept of IP map is interesting and is accessible from one of the author's consulting firm...

5-0 out of 5 stars Rembrandts and Understanding the New Economy
I would like to put Rembrandts into the context in which it was created.Rembrandts was conceived and co-authored by my friend and business partner of the past 15 years, Kevin Rivette. We co-founded Aurigin Systems,Inc., formerly SmartPatents, Inc., in 1992 to make it easier for people working with patents to do their work. From this beginning Aurigin and, particularly, Rembrandts, have helped transform the way intellectual property(IP) is viewed in the business community. Historically, IP was viewed strictly as a legal right, but Rembrandts shows why, in a knowledge-based economy, IP rights are one of the most fundamental business assets, that often determines the success or failure of an enterprise.Understanding the fundamental importance of IP and why it needs to be strategically managed are the underpinnings of Rembrandts.Using the book as a guide post and Aurigin's innovation asset management solutions, allows companies to: 1) understand the IP rights they own; 2) visualize how those rights fit into the competitive landscape with others' IP; 3) help determine where to place their future R&D efforts; and 4)help decide how to strategically leverage their IP rights to help determine their new business directions, increase return on investment and, ultimately, increase shareholder value. The purpose of Rembrandts was not to set forth a cookbook of how to manage IP.Rather, the book was intended to help CEOs and other business, accounting and legal professionals understand the fundamental function and purpose of IP as a highly protectable and leverageable business asset in today's economy, whether in an old-economy or a new-economy company.I believe the book very successfully achieves that purpose in a highly engaging and easy-to-read style, with many real world examples and interviews.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Just wrong.
I only read the patent section, and have no knowledge of the other sections. However I have found the book to be entirely too superficial to be of any assistance.Additionally, at more than one occasion on topics that are fairly important, the information was just wrong.I have read the patent section of my IP supplements to prepare for the exam, and I by far recommend the IP hornbook. It's a little longer but WAY worth it over this book.If your library doesn't have a copy and it's too expensive for you, then try Examples and Explanations, but whatever you do, don't just rely on this book, you'll look like an idiot when you completely misstate some things.I mean 90 to 95% of it is right, I'm sure, but I'm going to get enough wrong on my own, I don't need help.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little superficial, but okay.
Like almost all hornbooks or outlines, this one glosses over Trademark law.Copyright, Patents, and Trademarks are all taught seperately, so I don't understand why they are lumped together and glossed over superficially by almost all hornbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars The third edition is up to date--It is super!!!
I don't know whether or why the 2d edition would be on sale, as the first reviewer implies in his or her nevertheless good review. The third edition has been out for two years and it is complete, accessible, understandable, and better than the competition--by far! If you want to understand patents, copyrights, trademarks, this book will make you an expert in an afternoon. ... Read more
