Short, sweet, and to the point
After reading this book you can probably be an executor for an estate without hiring an attorney (assuming no legal documents have to be prepared or filed in court). I found this book in the reference section of the Westfield Pubic Library (NJ) along with its companion book: A Family Guide to Wills, Funerals & Probate (ISBN: 081604550X). This book was written for an executor to read, and the companion book concerned much of the same material but for the decedent to read before he or she dies.
A Must-Have Book For The Newly Appointed Executor
I purchased this book months ago to prepare myself for the future when I will have to handle my mother's affairs.To my absolute surprise, I have recently been appointed as administrator of my long lost cousin's estate.Yeap, he died intestate, without a will. Iron determination
Like some other reviewers I came across this book after seeing the movie North Country.The movie though is just good entertainment pulling at the heartstrings and very loosely based on the legal problems of single mother Lois Jenson.
A must read
A story of great courage and resolve, of working conditions beyond the pale, and the vicissitudes of the courts. Well written, in journalistic style, this is a page-turner, as well as being thoroughly researched, and factually accurate.

Class Action
This is by far one of the best books I have ever read. This is something our school kids should be required to read as well. The 2 ladies who wrote this book did an excellent job of telling Lois Jenson's real story. Her story, while tragic, needs to be told. The movie doesn't do this book justice. ... Read more

Plenty of books impart the basics of how to work independently - but too few include all the legal tips, tricks and traps involved. A 'must' for any who would work independently.
Great straghtforward information and advice
I recently a started an S corp for my software contracting.The book is helpful and worth the price.It won't answer EVERY question you will have, but you probably should talk to a CPA for those anyway.

Another Nolo Press Winner
My husband is an independent photographer, so the Nolo Press books are great for him, geared as they are to all those wishing to handle all the paperwork for themselves, instead of the usual array of lawyers, accountants, etc.He keeps it as a reference book and can easily turn to whatever subject he needs more information on.Well-written and easy to understand, as are all Nolo books, these books are wonderful to review periodically. ... Iran is misclassified
The authors give an impressive critique of the political systems in several countries. The book has several parts. The first is the major democracies, with a chapter for each of the US, Britain, France, Germany, Japan and India. It is commendable that India is put into this group, as befits the world's largest democracy.

Really good for those interested in assisted living needs
I needed information on how to finance, build and market senior housing.The information in this book on elderly and handicapped housing needs is really helpful to me.This is well done, and those of us not part of the industry can understand it.

An essential part of your long-term care management library.
Pearce has done an excellent job of writing a sentinel primer for managing long-term care communities.The details are all there.Of even greater importance, the details are presented within the context of critical principles that distinguish the excellent community from the average or mediocre.As a faculty member responsible for a number of long-term care management courses at two schools of public health, this is one of a very limited number of texts that I assign as "must reads" for my students.

A Detailed and Complete Guide on Senior Living Communities
I truly enjoyed "Senior Living Communities: Operations Management and Marketing for Assisted Living, Congregate, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities".It answered most of the questions that I had on developing a community for senior living. I feel a social calling to provide for the housing and care needs of the elderly. The Senior Care track was adopted as a part of the Masters of Real Estate degree that I am enrolled in. This book was used in one of my classes. I bought this book because it was the most recent publication purporting to explain technology law.Although I thought the price was a little high, I sure got more than my money's worth.This book really covers the mostimportant and interesting topics in technology law, and it does soextremely well.Biotech, Internet patents, privacy, obscenity, copyrights,trade secrets, click-wraps, domain names, design protection, strategies forcomputer programs, the Microsoft Antitrust case-you name it and this bookhas got it.The book also deals with international matters, such as theWTO, and international strategic considerations.The court case examplesare well selected, and the editing is superb.They are not to short to betrivial, but not to long either.I also visited the Web site mentioned onthe back cover.It already has a bunch of helpful updates, including theNapster and DVD encryption (DeCSS) debates, among many others.This reallyis a great book.I recommend it highly. ... AP Gov Students Thoughts
I am an 11th grader using this book in my AP Government class, and I have not been thourougly impressed with this book. It is incredibly dense and hard to follow. (It usually takes me over two hours to do a Chapters worth of notes.) The vocabulary words are rarely defined and usually lack contextual clues as well.

A mirror of world events
If you would like to understand what is happening in the Middle East, read what happened in Afghanistan much earlier.This book puts the current world conflict in perspective.Then,you should read "Jihad" by the same author.
Worth your money.
I just got done finishing this book.It is well-written and informative.There are alot of reviews praising this book, so I don't have to say much.I will just state that you can read books by so-called Taliban experts, or you can read it from areal expert.Ahmed Rashid is somebody who actually interviewed members of the Taliban, and observed the causes and effects of the Taliban takover, since he visited and stayed in Afghanistan for an extended period of time.

Warning "Diatribe" coming
This book would have been fine had it been published 20 years ago before the saturation of critical theory. Now it just feels like a wounded discourse from someone who went to grad school in the 60's.

Fairly valuable for getting the big picture
As a first year law student, and with finals quickly approaching, I was desperate for a book that would help me make sense of it all. I found this book to be pretty helpful. It made me take a step back from what I was studying to get a good look at the overall picture, which is really important. Finals are still about two weeks away, but I'm feeling more confident now. Don't get me wrong... this book is in now way a substitute for test preparation, but it does help you understand why somethings are the way they are.

Biased
This book is chalk full of biases and fallacies - especially regarding gun ownership.
Required text for a course
I don't actually believe in sociology and I think Mr. Thio's reasoning is mushy at many points.If you're thinking of paying full-price at your campus bookstore for the current edition, think again.The author mainly updates the pictures each year and tosses in a few new references - if you buy a coffee for the guy next to you he'll probably let you skim his new addition before the exam.

Biased book
I did not care for the subject matter in this book in part because everyone is deviant by the standards of the power elite (except for the power of elite). Homocides are donw by poor minorities, homosexuals are sexually deviants, and the list continues. The book is one sided throughout even down to the last chapters regardingpeople that are over weight. History - To The EXTREME
My first reaction after finishing the book, was to ask myself how anyone could have enough time to put so much information together.As the cover states, this "book touches every conceivable aspect of law...it is a stupendous achievement."The author takes an insurmountable task and first breaks it up into four sections, Part 1: American Law in the colonial Period, Part 2: Revolution to the Middle of the 19th century, Part 3: Close of the 19th century, Part 4: The 20th century.Within each part he segments chapters into readable legal topics.(i.e. Corporations, Crime and Punishment, etc).In that way, the reader gets an understanding of the period and how it effects all sorts of law, before going onto another time period and seeing how other areas of the law grew and affected other areas.
readable and worthwhile
If this edition is at all like the 2nd edition (what I am inferring from) then it will be a very readable history of American law up to 1900. It's something of a social history given the wealth of information on how law affected the family, the early commerce of the Republic, and industrial growth (and suffering it caused, see the chapter on torts). It is something of a social history. The early chapters on colonial law are a bit tough but are worth comparing to the changes that would follow. If you're at all interested in the law and how U.S. society evolved (and did harm, at times) this book and its sequel, American Law in the 20th Century, is very much worthwhile. ... Read more
