5-0 out of 5 stars Keep Your Powder Dry
The second amendment to the U.S. Constitution reads, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." A straight forward enough statement that this book shows has been interpreted in ways that are far from what its original drafters intended. When the amendment was written, the drafters distinguished between the concept of common defense and the concept of self-defense, as established in English Common Law. The amendment was originally written to prevent the newly created federal government from disarming the state militias that were considered the first line of defense against foreign invasions, civil disorder, and usurpation of power by the federal government. At the time, "well regulated militia" meant organized citizen soldiers trained and equipped to provide a common defense. The rights to self-defense and the weapons necessary to that type of defense were left to the discretion of the states. As this book explains with admirable clarity, and using actual case studies, this distinction between common and self-defense has gradually been lost as the U.S. itself has changed over the last two hundred years. Anyone wishing a real understanding of the second amendment and the many unresolved conflicts that it has generated would do well to read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
I thought this was a decent, easy-to-read book with great graphs to highlight the points made. My only suggestion is that some of the Hypothetical answers seemed choppy and I didn't grasp a full understanding of how some conclusion were reached (ex. the Independent running for president who couldn't get a certain length of time on t.v.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Guaranteed 5
I am a high school senior who took AP Comparative Government last year.My course only lasted 3 months, so my teacher had a hard time cramming so much knowledge into our brains in such a short time span.Hence, I decided to do some outside reading (a first for me), so I bought this book.Ethel Wood's study guide is the most comprehensive book on comparative government. It is very easy to read and rather succint. The quizzes inbetween each chapter are fantastic, as are the two practice exams.I was able to skim the entire book in a couple of days (its not hard at all), and a few days before the exam I thoroughly read the entire book.Although some questions on the exam were not discussed in this study guide, I was able to pull off a 5.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book Containing Everything You Need to Know
I took the AP Comparative Government test, like most people, because it comes free with the US government test.About 2 weeks before the test, I broke down and realized that I needed to get a prep book from which to study, or I wasn't going to do well. This book arrived at my doorstep 9 days before the exam. With just a reasonable general knowledge of global affairs as my only prerequisite, I read this book cover to cover and got a 5 on the test without a hitch. The questions on the exam were so reminiscent of this book that it almost seemed as if they were written by the same author. After a thorough reading of this, I don't see how anyone could possibly score below a 4, and I find it highly unlikely that anyone would not get a 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I took the AP Comparative Gov test since it came "free" with the American government test without having taken the course. All I did in preparation for the test was read this study guide thoroughly four days in advance and amazingly, I scored a 5. I really liked the simple format of this book. It got to the point and made studying and reviewing relatively easy. I think that on the test, there were only two multiple choice questions with answers that the book did not deal with. I compared this book with the other comparative gov book available that my friend had and this one is far superior. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrifying Justice Department Double Think
Mr Yoo moves on from his earlier arguments that torture falls at a point slightly short of physical death, organ failure or loss of limb. Mr Yoo makes some interesting if devastating points with his new theories. The President's war powers, he argues, allow him to do, basically, whatever he wants. The President may, if he chooses, crush the genitals of children, maim, torture or kill civilians. In this respect one might remember that Bush ordered an air strike on the house occupied by the infant grandchildren of Saddam Hussein AFTER the end of the Iraq war and even though the house was surrounded by US troops. The President is limited, according to Mr Yoo, only by how he CHOOSES to interpret International Treaties and as he has the power to repudiate such treaties or ignore them entirely (as in the International Human Rights for the Child Treaty, the Geneva Convention or the Treaty of Vienna,) then, this means that presidential power is absolute EVEN if despotic criminal or tyrannical. Mr Yoo appears now to say that the President and his henchmen, cronies and agencies MAY indeed use indiscriminant torture. Mr Yoo however does not adequately explain how the President can thus overturn congressional treaty ratification. As what constitutes a 'time of war' is also up to the President and does not rely on any 'legal' declaration of war (which is a matter of international law to which the US is thus not subject,) then the US may have, effectively, a Despot Emperor for President. Does the 'War on Drugs' thus give the President the same wartime powers as he asserts for his 'War on Terror' - an undeclared war on no particular nation state? Is the US thus always in a state of war? This is interesting, not just semantically, as the District and Supreme Courts appear to agree with Mr Yoo's interpretation, blocking cases connected with this on grounds of national security whilst Congress does not appear to care. Perhaps Clinton should have used Mr Yoo's arguments in the Monical Lewinsky scandal and impeachment hearings. War powers might have thus allowed him to do whatever he wanted with his cigar and to lie about it in the national interest. The problem with Mr Yoo's argument is that Checks and Balances thus no longer appear to exist. Interestingly if one applies Mr Yoo's arguments to their logical end he becomes an eloquent advocate for terrorism or for the Holocaust where the ends justify the use of any means, however horrible. Of course, either this is pretty much nonsense and makes toilet paper of the Declaration of Independence, Magna Carta, democracy and human rights OR the truth is more terrifying and the US is now a Stalinist or Nazi state. I suspect Mr Yoo could be subject to arrest as a war criminal should he ever leave the United States and visit a civilised country???

1-0 out of 5 stars Yoo has no clue!
The 2 biggest mistakes made by government in my lifetime are Congress giving away war powers in 1965 and 2002.The constitution holds that declaring war is the responsibility of the Congress. If the Executive has grounds for war let him/her present them and Ccongress vote.Twice I have seen Congress abdicate this important power with disasterous results. This is just one of many examples why Yoo has no clue.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book's point about constitutional checks and balances were once taught in 8th grade civics class.
The outrage this book caused on publication is a sign of the incredible ignorance so prevalent these days about was once common knowledge--that the powers of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches exist in parallel under the elegant system of checks and balances of the Constitution, each with their separate skill set and functions. This book is a necessary defense of the traditional constitutional idea that the executive branch has primacy in matters of war, national security, and foreign policy. It is sad that otherwise sensible people like Neal Katyal and Stuart Taylor should tout outre ideas about the Constitution as a big sandbag over the head of the President most especially in war, national security and foreign policy, as if this idea, which is strictly the invention of the left, were Con Law 101.It is so Nixon era.But there you go.The "me generation" took over the academy, threw out all the Rembrandts, and filled it up with their Hello Kitty and Marilyn tchotchkes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for applying Law everyday.
This is a wonderful book because of the way it is organized from the definitions of law and how American government works in terms of business dealings and legal relationships with others. I'm impressed at the margin headings of each chapter and a thorough definitions of each law which is easy for the reader to read and understand. An additional pro of this book is the numerous case examples given within each chapter and towards the end. Each case is interesting and useful once you take a thorough look through it.4-0 out of 5 stars Essentials of Contemporary Business Law w/CD

5-0 out of 5 stars The other side of awareness ...
I do think that the awareness of preventative screening and making women conscious of their health is a positive testament to many runs and galas dedicated to a cure for breast cancer. Treatment options are still evolving but overall, the pink ribbon phenomenon has created the awareness of the disease like never before. What this book does examine is what happens beyond the gala fundraisers ... how does the money raised translate into actual cure outcomes? This is similar to the commens made when AIDS fundraising crossed into a showbiz opportunity. However, despite the pinkwash of breast cancer awareness month ... one thing really seems to be clear ... the condition is top of mind, women are more likely to mind their health, and more money is raised than before towards treatment. Like the saying ... all roads lead eventually lead to Rome .... all efforts eventually lead to a cure in some way, shape, or form. Nothing is ever wasted especially when the intent of many individual fundraisers really is true and comes from the heart.

I do like this book since it does cover a lot of material for the paralegal which helps with leagal research and writing. The problem is in the writing style of the text, it truly will make you fall asleep. There are alsop a lack of useable diagrams when it come to writing law office memos. The formats however are presented rather well and I would reccomend this text to a paralegal to use as a reference but look into other materials which help aswell such as QUICK STUDY LAW LEGAL WRITING BAR CHART. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Grossly inaccurate
Although the book does contain truthful and revelant empirical raw data, the author severely slants the truth (and even sometimes makes half-truths to the point of incorrectly naming Presidents) to the point of satisfying her own argument. Although Castro may very much enjoy her deptiction of the sustained need for socialism, my exiled family as well as my Cuban colleagues find the book disheartening as it weaves a fairytale for Castro as the glorious Savior of the Republic. The fact is that although the Republic did need change, it needed sustained political evolution, not revoltuion as found in the Castro regime. As my family is and comes from a family of Cuban politicians trying to advocate such change, her book is a tragic misinterpretation of those great ideals the infant Republic was trying to accomplish. If you are interested in knowing more about what actually occurred, not some socialist propaganda, watch Andy Garcia's movie The Lost City.

4-0 out of 5 stars elections in Cuba
in response to the review on nov 23 entitled "inadequate and biased". YOu should check your facts. Try reading Isaac Saney's Cuba a Revolution in Motion to read how democracy in Cuba works. Or better yet, go to Cuba during elections and see for yourself. It seems that your review is inaccurate and biased.

2-0 out of 5 stars Falls a bit short.
Rarely does one find a book concerning the Cuban Revolution in which the author at least makes an effort to keep there political views out of the analysis.Marifeli Perez-Stable is no exception, as her book will either be praised by the left, or critizied by the right. In writing such a biased account her credibility is jepordized; not only because anyone with half a brain will realize this, but anyone with limited study in regards to the revolution see's many flaws.Amongst the most prevelant is the complete neglect of Cuba's "Counterculture" and the booming tobacco industry in Cuba throughout the 50's (she harbors on sugar as if every Cuban was either a plantation owner or slave).Hopefully Cuban books in the future will steer clear of political biases and present the facts, and only the facts. ... Clearly the reviewer who rated this excellent book with one star and made what I regard as slanderous comments about the professionalism of one of the most illuminating thinkers of our time, is driven by ideological objection to Cohen's analysis.
4-0 out of 5 stars Reader from London--Should Read London Papers
States of Denial: Knowing About Atrocities and Suffering by Stanley Cohen was awarded the 2002 British Academy Book Prize. 5-0 out of 5 stars I didn't know I knew what I didn't know
This is one of those "it should be required reading" books. Although his emphasis is on the larger mass atrocities and sufferings, Cohen examines denial from the personal to the political, from harmless "I'm not eating as many cookies as I really am," to the most horrendous "It's not torture; it's just heavy pressure" to the apathetic, "Gee, 5000 Ruwandans killed this week; I wonder how the Giants did last night." He concisely reviews the explanations of denial--Freudian, cognitive, etc--and neatly identifies the different types, styles, motives and cultural and personal collusions. Cohen's writing is clean, engaging, to the point, neither tediously over-intellectual nor patronzing, obviously well-researched and professional. He assumes his reader is familiar with basic social and political sciences and history and doesn't belabor points others have made. Most importantly, the book is compassionate, not in a gooey, all-is- forgiven and understood sense, but in its acknowledgement of denial as a universal of human behavior. Cohen handles an uncomfortable subject, not knowing what we know, a behavior of which we are all guilty, in a straight-forward, non-accusatory fashion. One has the sense that Cohen has not only being willing to see what goes on in a way that few have the courage to do, but that he has also refused to see, as we all do, and come to terms with his own denials, that his fastination with denial is not only as an observer but as a participant as well. ...
