1-0 out of 5 stars Nolo's Guide to Social Security Disability
Not at all helpful if you are filling out an application for SSDI benefits.More than 3/4 of the book is on the appeal process and social security system jargon. You can tell it is written by a lawyer, its worthless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nolo's Guide to Social Security Disability by Iii MD et al.
This book is invaluable for anyone contemplating a disability claim or for anyone seeking to preserve benefits. The authors explain the elements of a claim; namely the severity of an impairment and its impact on the ability to function in a work environment or setting. The MINE claims are predefined by the law. These are "Medical Improvement Not Expected". i.e. a number of debilitating arthritic diseases or diseases of the musculo-skeletal system
5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference book overall
This is an excellent book of the whole area of Social Security Disability benefits and how to fill the forms out completely, when to seek an attorney for appeals etc, and a rather extensive section on what the term disability means to Social Security and what diseases, conditions etc qualify and which do not.The only area lacking was disabled spousal Social Security Disability coverage, which a spouse under age 50 with no minor children must file for in the same way the working spouse who becomes disabled would have to do.I plan on donating my copy which I bought via Amazon.com to my local public library. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I knew that there was racial differences in the Second World War, and frankly it didn't surprise me that there was a disparity in executions between black and white in WWII. I though I would be reading a history of some of these accounts. Instead what I read was someones polemic against the United States Army's justice system. I was also expecting a history professor from Duke to get her facts straight. On page 17 she claims that a French destroyer crossed the channel with the USS Arizona. The last I checked the USS Arizona was sunk on December 7th 1941 in Pearl Harbor and is still there. Her second mistake comes when she describes Captain Whittington's decorations and campaign ribbons. On page 120 she describes his North American Campaign ribbon as having a bronze arrowhead attachment signifying involvement in the Normandy invastion. I know for a fact that while investigating my grandfathers campaign medals from WWII that the American Campaign medal was issued for 30 days service in the United States. The European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal was given for service in the ETO. Therefore his bronze arrowhead would be on his European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon and not on his North American Campaign Ribbon. Such mistakes are unforgiveable for a university history teacher, and for any editor who should at least know that the USS Arizona was sunk at Pearl Harbor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superlative History
Kaplan has written a unique book that combines history, literary biography, investigative journalism, courtroom drama, and personal memoir. The miracle is that she blends these genres so effortlessly in a book as compelling and beautifully written as French Lessons and The Collaborator.
5-0 out of 5 stars The French Perspective
The issue of the death penalty being applied more often to African Americans in the armed services in WWII should not surprise Americans, but thank goodness it did surprise Louis Guilloux. Kaplan has given readers a special French perspective on an ugly chapter in American history. Through both solid research into government archives and first-hand visits and interviews, she has given the Guilloux novel, OK JOE, which she has translated, a companion history that, I believe, Guilloux would have appreciated. Don't miss her excellent footnotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Of man's ambition, this document serves ample testimony
To the above reviewer who claims this tome contains no more than a checklist and was not useful to him, my response can only be that even Hamlet, tossed into the ape's den, will eventually become so much banana toppings.
2-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentally, a Check List
This book is a big check-list.Do not buy it if you are actually looking for building code information. However, it would probably be useful to contractors who want to be sure they have covered all bases.(I gave it two stars because it was not useful for me.)

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Companion for the UBC Code

5-0 out of 5 stars People are alike all over
The first thing that hits you looking through this 3 volume set is how ready, willing and able the human race is, world-wide, to kill, kill, kill. If the human race was a car, it would have been sent back to the factory, the schematics destroyed, and the engineers would have started all over again from scratch! Serious design flaws.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book!!!
It helps me to understand and have compassion for people with disability and illness. Going into the health profession field, this a great book for anyone to understand family members, friends, or anyone who have disability. An excellent book and I would recommend it for anyone, not just students in anthropology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hearing the Body
Bob became paraplegiac at a late age, after having enjoyed a long, brilliant career as a professor at Columbia and an anthropologist who, with his anthropologist wife Yolanda, lived among Amazonian Indians and Saharan camel nomads. He was too clever to be overwhelmed with self-pity. This book was written from the perspective that he loved most: what you'd think is true is probably just the opposite. We expect paralyzed people to get better, like other "sick" patients, but the problem is, they don't: they're damaged selves. Hey--just like everybody else. We all have to come to terms with life's damages and our isolation and loneliness as we attempt to cope with it. Who would ever have thought it possible--we can all learn something compelling about our normal selves, viewing life from the wheelchair! Ironically (and this is the kind of twist that styles Murphy's ideas) the disabled are a mirror for the rest of us: "The paralytic is, quite literally, a prisoner of the flesh, but most humans are convicts of sorts. We live within walls of our own making, staring out at life through bars thrown up by culture and annealed by our fears. . . .[that] induces a mental paralysis, a stilling of thought." Murphy has never sold his soul to an illusion: he speaks candidly as a participant observer of his own encounter with symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and transformation. Always the fox, he transcends the smoke screen that our cultural prejudices force upon us, and hears his own body and its message with astounding clarity and patience. This is a book that students read eagerly, in both anthropology and sociology classes, because its message is provocative, and its ethnography is true. It teaches us all to listen to the sound of our own struggles with personal identity and mortality, and to smile with the knowledge that we are not alone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disibility means reliance on others
Ten years ago since the American Disabilities Act went into effect, the disabled still feel that they are isolated from the real world.Former professor of anthropology at Columbia University Robert F. Murphy examinesfrom his personal perspective the life of a disabled person in a worldwhere he was independent and zealous of life. The reader will discover whatit is like for a disabled person to battle besides the inability to carryout everyday function we take for granted. The Body Silent is unlike otherbooks written by the disable. The Body Silent is an excellent book full ofprose and not journal entries of how fortunate the non-disabled really are. This book (recommended to me by anthropologist Dr. James Trostle) willchange your perspective and outlook on how it is like to grow up again andlearning how to walk, one step at a time. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Unconventional
I read this book in a women's studies class. It is based on a qualitative study about HIV+ women. It features a collection of voices from a series of interviews with several support groups, and focuses mainly on the emotional/spiritual aspect of living with HIV/AIDS. The two researchers who ran the study and edited the book are as much a part of the book as the women are. They keep a running commentary on the bottom of each page reflecting on the interviewing process and their relationships as researchers and friends to the women in the study, keeping the reader aware of the power differentials that might have an effect on the women's stories. The book also contains several angel "intertexts" which I personally didn't find to be very necessary, but Lather and Smithies explain it in the book. Overall, as a person who's never known anyone with HIV/AIDS, I liked how it focused on everyday "living" with HIV/AIDS. The voices of different women were featured and it showed the wide range of emotions and experiences that these women faced while living with HIV/AIDS. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars God Bless America the Ignorance lives on
This book describes what has been happening for years centuries. As an EEO specialist I know my rights under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 should protect my rights at the Federal Level. The ADA Act is suppose to protect me at the local level and it does not.I do believe that EVERYONE has rights in this country our rights are comprised every day.As I read the other reviews I noticed Tomthumbguy believes the Civil Rights Moment 60s is not the same I beg to differ. Disabled people like African Americans in the 1960's are still not allowed to eat , shop, go to the movies, travel and live in certain places because there is limited accessibility or people just don't want us there. If I am not mistaken does that not sound like the segregated south from the 1700s until maybe 30 years ago. Also, let's keep in mind disabled people come from all walks of life and ethnicities. That included African Americans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Glad this book makes people think.
I have not completely read this book. But I am glad that it is making people think. To the reviewer who is up set with this book...I am white so I have no reference for what it is like for African Americans. However, I am disabled and I too would like to be able to go to the same places that everyone else does.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book with some serious questions
I too personally have experienced what Mary Johnson documents in her well-researched work.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow, wow, wow
I didn't go look for this book, but it found me. What an inspirational story. It is painful to read because it fills with all the pain Joel had to endure after the accident. The part when he asked the nurse to please be gentle gave me goose bumps. The book captured Joel's pain, happiness, faith and his love for life. I adore his parents. Through all 10 fingers or no fingers, their love for Joel never change.Eventhough after the accident, Joel lost his eye browns, but he never lost his vision for life and for God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shockingly Beautiful--Haunted Me for Days!
Joel's story is unforgettable and truly a treasure among biographies.I was inspired and encouraged by his remarkable story.A truly great read that you won't forget anytime soon! I'm so glad I bought this one!

3-0 out of 5 stars Unemotional Chronicle
This is an excellent recounting of the events of a life, but it is largely unemotional. The horrors of the primary school are not fully documented, leaving the reader with the impression that it must not have been all THAT bad - it was horrific, of course, but we don't see enough examples to really feel sympathy.Additionally, we never learn many personal things about the author, such as how she feels about her deafness (although this probably results from her stunted emotional growth) and why she felt compelled to write the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars On Eagles' Wings
Anne Bolander suffered from congenital hearing loss which her paternal grandmother attributed to prenatal exposure to a certain medication.Anne and her twin brother, Peter, born in 1954 become part of a large family.Sadly, their mother dies in 1957 and Anne has trouble navigating in the hearing world.Unable to remain in preschool because of her hyperactive behavior and inability to hear directions, her father, stepmother and paternal grandparents are ill-equipped to meet her needs.
5-0 out of 5 stars You're a wonderful person Anne!
I am not a fan of reading books, but the title of this book caught my attention.I could not put this book down once I started reading it and finished it over a weekend.I recommended this book to my entire family and I hope everyone gets a chance to read it.I was so moved on how Anne survived through all of the horrible obstactles she faced. It is sad to think that all of her "supposeable friends" during that time in her life took advantage of her the way they did when she needed them the most.I feel like I know her and forever I will think of Anne.I wish her the best and I hope the future for her is the most rewarding, for she has earned it!! ...
