5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE! - Knowledge is truly power!
This book is awesome! If you have a child that receives special education services you NEED this book!! This book is full of the answers I have been looking for, for the last 4 years.I have read it twice and will read it again. This is an easy read it is broken down into 5 sections that everyone can understand. My favorite is section #3 The Parent as Expert. I used this section along with the others to get my son ESY services and 1:1 reading remediation.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for every parent with a special ed. classified child
As if being confronted with the diagnosis of a learning or developmental disability in your child wasn't stressful enough, upon diagnosis and classification, a parent is thrown into the ocean that is special education and the bureaucratic nightmare that goes along with it.This book is a treasure trove of strategies - everything from managing your paperwork to managing your emotions with respect to special education is covered."The best way to avoid due process is to assume and prepare for due process"and "treat your relationship with the school personnel as a marriage with no possibility of divorce" are two of the most powerful "Wrightisms" I came away with and have served us well in advocating for our children with autism.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend this Awesome Book!!!
This book is a wonderful asset for parents who are advocating for their kids. Many times I have let my emotions control my dealings with the school and this book explains why that is detrimental to your childs education.

5-0 out of 5 stars I agree-- one more reference
Thank you to the writer of the response to "the author states opinion as fact". One more reference regarding the presence of autistic-like characteristics in family members of autistic kids:
5-0 out of 5 stars Author states facts that are taken as opinions!
Since I feel that the majority of the reviews below give a good picture of this text, I will confine 1-0 out of 5 stars The author states some opinions as facts!
The author has a habit of stating "heresay" and her opinions as facts. In chapter 10.. "Family issues and support" on page 298, the author states "Some of Bruno Bettelheim's "cold & distant" mothers, could have had mild forms of autism themeselves" This, the author states, is from "some professionals." I never heard this before! Also, that parents of ASD children have a "slightly higher incidence of depression and other mental disorders..and health problems in general, perhaps related to an underlying immune system dysfunction."THIS IS NOT A MEDICAL FACT AT ALL! THE AUTHOR IS VERY NEGLIGENT IN EVEN STATING THIS!! To further add insult to injury, Ms. Waltz, who is not a physician, states.."Some of this may be genetically based, although some may derive from being in a difficult situation." This is the the most ridiculous claim, that being the parent of an autistic child will compromise their health! So much of this book is just an opinion and not researced at all in fact. I would take with a grain of salt what this author has to "say" about autism! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Insight for Parents and Teachers
My son has learning difference woes, and in trying to get a handle on things at school (mostly), I've searched high and low for information. I put tags and stickies on almost every page of this book - marking ideas, situations, stories, and such that either sounded like my son or gave me ideas and a great deal of insight and support for my journey in helping him have fewer social troubles with others. I cried, laughed, and felt stronger after reading the book and wish I could use the author as a doctor for my kid! I feel strongly enough about what all the book has to say about how teachers and parents are so integral in the training and learning processes of these kids that I am buying another copy for my son's elementary school officials to share amongst themselves in the hopes of giving them ideas to help them cope better with the kidlets they have to deal with at school.By (diligently) working together, parents and schools can make help these kids improve their social skills to a level that makes all feel better!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Visual tour back to my adolesence
I can still remember standing in a downtown field where McDonalds is now erected mourning the losses of my friends, classmates and fellow Fisherman with half the town of Anacortes. It was almost spooky as I picked this book up and could not stop until I finished it visualizing that day that had become burned into my long term memory. Patrick Dillion depicted the story with a bias view, and helped the reader to understand the highs and lows of commercial crabbing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Little Book Sick
This book was okay. Since it was a true story it kind of was boring. I understand though, because people's life's arent a 24 hour action story. It was well written though, for a true story.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really a book about being lost at sea
I picked up this book expecting it to be about a great tragedy at sea, maybe encorporating a great survival story or a heroic struggle with the ocean. However, this is a book more about courts and hearings to assess liability for the accident and set new safety standards for the fishing industry not too much about the tragedy itself. If you like to read about politics and policy, this is the book for you, but if you like to read about stories at sea, you'd be better off choosing a different book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I have spent my life at sea.So did my son.
Deaths, accidents and collisions and sinkings at sea are not viewed by U.S. Courts with laws that confine the everyday civil, criminal, commercial, or real estate business of this country.Like the sea itself, U.S. Maritime Law is a collection of interconnected forces that one must navigate to pass.5-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Part not included
Customers should be aware that the Pocket Part used to bring this volume current is not included in the sale. You would be better off ordering this book directly from the publisher, West Group, if you want a law book that is current, at no additional cost, at the time of sale.

Schoenbaum's Hornbook on Admiralty is indispensable from the point of view of this maritime practitioner. It is much better than the other Hornbook available - and so far beyond other guides that it's not even worth lookingat anything else. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Book That Saved My Deaf Son's Life
It was a long time ago...perhaps 15 years. My kid had been diagnosed as Deaf or "deaf" by the hearing community with a small "d." In those days, parents (especially a hearing parent like myself) had no options. Technology for "aided" hearing in all forms was the rage. ASL was not allowed even in the "deaf" school he attended. But my son could hear nothing even with powerful hearing aids. So, for me, a NJ criminal appellate attorney (for 20 yrs), I wanted facts-not-fluff. Dr. Lane's book in Hardcover was released in 1992. When I read the review in the NY Times Sunday Book Review section, I could not drive fast enough to get a copy. Holed up for a day, I read it front to back. And then I knew. No. My vocation was not going to be a criminal attorney, I needed to become an advocate or "the law firm" for one - my own kid. And we needed to move out of NJ so good-bye law practice and the money. Had it not been for this book, though, he would not be graduating to attend a great college next year. Please buy this book. Please do not let "them" tell you it is "radical." Go for it. I beg you....

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly negative tone, thought-provoking content.
I found this book to be engaging almost from the beginning; it is meticulously researched, well organized, logical, yet passionate in its defense of an oppressed language minority. One could certainly argue that Mr. Lane short-changes his opponents by not really addressing their arguments on the benefits of mainstreaming Deaf children, but the purpose of this book is not to present both sides of the issues; the purpose is to demonstrate the oppression of the Deaf language and therefore their culture. It provides strong evidence that the Deaf child is a minority, not an invalid, and that the tendency of hearing parents to see mainstreaming as the only option is a dangerous mistake. This is deep reading and scholarly writing, at times to the point of near inaccessibility to a mainstream audience. However, it is convincing and eye-opening if one is willing to put the effort into reading it.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and thought-provoking
Harlan Lane shows how Deafness is a cultural affiliation and only through the hearing world's oppression does it become a disability.Very well-written and researched, Lane digs deep into the Deaf culture and history to bring us this excellent resource.I believe that anyone saying that this work is biased and obsolete holds biased and obsolete viewpoints themselves.Come into this with an open mind, and you will leave a better person.Highly recommended! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Informative but dull
If you want an overview of the capture of Eichmann this book will give it to you, but don't expect a gripping story. This is unglamorous espionage.Israel receives very specific informaiton of Eichmann living in Argentina but ignores it twice. When they finally decide to pursue him it turns out that Eichmann had given up running. He and his family were living thinly concealed lives in squalor.
1-0 out of 5 stars "EICHMANN IN MY HANDS"is the TRUE, PERSONAL ACCOUNT by Peter Malkin.
The claims in this book and by the literary critics above are such complete, watered-down, political CRAP intended to sell another book on the subject. It is all third-hand, and poor at that.Read the TRUE and ACCURATE account by the Israeli Spy, recently declassified WHO ACTUALLY CAUGHT ADOLF EICHMANN.His famous book is called "EICHMANN IN MY HANDS". Before this book, he had to write under an alias, Peter Z Mann. His action novels reflect his life and are must-reads: "ULTIMATUM PU 94"and"CARLOS MUST DIE".(Also recommend the underground book written in 1961 immediately after Eichmann's capture "THE PLOT TO SAVE EICHMANN".

5-0 out of 5 stars SHOULD BE MANDATORY READING FOR LAW SCHOOL ADVOCACY CLASSES
In my 40 years of trial practice, few books are better organized, or present more useful insights in how to try cases.David Berg has been in the pits, has dozens of verdicts in all kinds of civil and criminal cases-everything from murder to patent infringement-and writes about them very well.Drawing on his experience, David explains the importance, goals, and methods of achieving those goals, for each step of representation, from the first meeting with the client, to the final words of closing argument. And while this isn't one of those "war story" book, he does use examples from his own cases and those of other trial lawyers to make his points. This book is a "must read," not just for aspiring trial lawyers, but for all who want to enhance their skills in the courtroom. It should be mandatory reading for law school advocacy classes.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!
Each arena has it's Michael Jordan. In the courtroom, it is David Berg. And Berg has taken this natural talent and time-honed skill to a new level as he unlocks certain secrets that have catapulted him to the top of his profession. What most have considered his "magic," he explains as common sense practice. This book should be a required text at every law school. Those in the legal profession should not just read this, they should study it.The difference it will make in case results more than pays for the book, over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very highly recommended advice guide
David Berg is a member of the Texas and New York State Bar Associations and the founding partner of Berg & Androphy, who has published dozens of articles about legal issues in such venues as "Litigation Magazine", "The New York Times", and "Newsweek". In The Trial Lawyer: What It Takes To Win, Berg draws upon his years of experience and expertise to create a straightforward instructional and reference guide which ranges from perfecting techniques for arguing a case in court; to getting the research right; to the art of persuasion; to recognizing how to best address a particular jury, Voir Dire; specific tips, tricks, and techniques for all aspects of presenting the actual trial; and more. The Trial Lawyer is a very highly recommended advice guide and strongly recommended reading for aspiring and newly practicing trial lawyers alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nazi depravity at its worst
I had read Eugen Kogon's work titled "The Theory and Practice of Hell" and wondered could this work be any more enlightening as to Buchenwald camp. The reports, listed as personal narratives, are quite graphic and revealing as to the nature of this camp and its staff. This book is a real eye opener to any student of the Holocaust who desires a knowledge of camps inside Germany, as opposed to the death camps in Poland for instance. It reveals the abject corruption of the s.s. when they were exposed to unlimited money, power and control. I do not excuse their actions in any way, but am glad that these villains are portrayed in the cowardly light they lived in. One report of personal interest to me pertains to prisoners sent from Buchenwald to Auschwitz where the activities of Otto Moll, the sadistic beast of Birkenau are chronicled. I would appreciate any titles or information on this elusive person only from an information standpoint. I recommend this book for its educational and personal power...the depths that men sink to are truly bottomless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Book
This book is not for the faint of heart. It is the United States government report on the Buchenwald concentration camp that was liberated by American forces during the end of the Second World War.The book covers the state of the camp when it was liberated, the types of prisoners, the methods used to subdue and kill the prisoners, and the fate of the camp administration and guards once the camp was over run.The book also has a number of camp diagrams and black and white photos.4-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing, but Important
As a Jew, I feel it is very important to be as informed as possible about the past of my religion and my people. The events of the holocaust, and in turn, the events at the Buchenwald Camp were truly horrific. From the knowledge of what occured there comes a sort of preventative aide-if people know of the tragedy that occured, then it can be prevented from ever happening again. The accounts offered in the Buchenwald Report are harrowing and disturbing. I read the entire book, from cover to cover, and although some accounts are somewhat tedious and repetative, there is nothing more intimate than someone's personal account of their experience at Buchenwald. I highly recommend this book to anyone with slight interest in the happenings of world war II and specifically, how the holocaust was personally effecting people's lives. The reason for four stars is first of all: As much as I find this book important to read, it's not enjoyable, as a book really should be. Such depressing subject matter, but it is important to be disposed to such information, as a sort of (to restate myself) preventative for something like this ever happening again. As for a historian's standpoint, also, I am not sure as to how accurate all of the information provided within this book is. A very valuable read, though. ... Read more
