GEE explained with all the computational details
GEE is an extension of the Generalized Linear Models that handles the correlation structure found in panel data and longitudinal or repeated measures analysis. Simply the Best (for those who want to know what they're doing)
If you really want to know what you're doing when you use S, buy this book.Don't waste your money on a book like Venables and Ripley -- you will be sorely dissappointed, unless you just want a large collections of example calls to canned S routines.The authors of the present book, on the other hand, are Chambers and Hastie of AT&T (where S was invented), and they clearly understand the importance of detailed explanations of the theory underlying the S functions they describe. Just as important, in my opinion, they also describe the algorithms used by these functions.These two components are missing from other books (like the popular Venables and Ripley) but they are critical in order to know -- and be able to explain and justify to others -- how and why your statistical analyses were performed and what the results really mean.Any other was of doing statistics (e.g. throwing canned procedures at your data and seeing what pretty graphs and figures you can produce) is meaningless.

This is "the white book", an essential S-PLUS reference.
S programmers refer to this as "the white book", and it is a keyreference for understanding the methods implemented in several of S-PLUS'high-end statistical functions, including 'lm()', predict()', 'design()','aov()', 'glm()', 'gam()','loess()', 'tree()', 'burl.tree()', 'nls()' and'ms()'.Read more

first good text on this since David and Moeschberger in 1978
Crowder has written an up-to-date text on an important problem in health science and medical research.The first good monograph on this subject was by David and Moeschberger in 1978 and no text devoted to this topic had been written until now.People get sick or die or hardware fails due to one of several possible causes.In the competing risks model these causes are all given probabilities of occurrence over time and "compete" to be the first to occur and thus cause the event.Read more

Great book very bad writing
This is a truly great book on this subject, but it is obvious that the text is mostly transcribed lecture or lab notes.The writing is so bad (run on and fragments) that the publisher should have caught this, and should provide all of us who purchased the book a free revised and updated copy.Read more

excellent overview of survey sampling
This is the second edition of a text on survey sampling with a different title than the first edition. The first edition published in 1973 was based on a short overview course that Barnett gave on survey sampling. It's title was "Elements of Sampling Theory." The second edition published in 1991 was intended to serve a similar purpose but update the book with advances over the intervening 18 years.Read more

Obsolete text -- don't waste your time
Once upon a time this book may have been useful, but now this text is more than 20 years old and badly in need of a revision.You would be better off to read a more up-to-date work instead, such as the books by Rothman and Greenland, Clayton and Hills, or MacMahon and Trichopolos.
