3-0 out of 5 stars Advanced topics, excellent examples, bad writing
This textbook covers advanced epidemiology concepts that are necessary for anyone involved in research. It has excellent examples and a logical layout. The major drawback to this book is the writing style-- it is "scientifically" written (translation: hard to read).5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I can't speak highly enough of this book or its authors. This is a very well-written, efficient explanation of some very advanced epidemiologic concepts.I use it to study for exams and as a reference for my own studies.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst epidemiology book that I have ever read.
He introduces a lot of his own idea/thoughts which are not currently acceptable by any references/texts on epidemiology. I bought it because it was a required text by my course instructor. Interaction/confounding section confused me a lot, since what he wrote in the previous section was not compatible with what was written in the next even though both are on the same topics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars presents clinical trials issues and methodology clearly
This book is very unique. Basic statistical concepts are clearly presented but only those concepts that are important in clinical trials. The author presents all the issues with clinical trials including ethical issues with some historical perspective. Principles of randomization and statistical design are clearly presented. It offers discussion of Bayesian techniques and meta-analyses, cross-over designs and group sequential methods (interim analyses). For statisticians doing clinical research like myself, this is a valuable reference source.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best start in clinical trial
The amount of knowledge and the scope of this book are the exact need for the first contact with clinical trials. Yet, it is not a simple or superficial text. Instead, it not only will guide the reader through thebasics of trials (and there is so much that is not basic in it) but theauthor points the reader to hundreds of papers and books that arelandmarks. I regard this book itself as one of these landmarks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most up-to-date and thorough cover of Clinical Trials

3-0 out of 5 stars risk society towards a new modernity
The Book consists of two interrelated theses. one reflexive modernization and other issue of risk. The concept of risk is directly bound to theconcept of reflexive modernization. It shows how classical modernization isdifferent from reflexive modernization.Risk may be defined as asystematic way of dealing with hazards and insecurities induced andintroduced by modernization itself. The risk and hazards of today is ofglobal nature of their threat to people, animals and plants .It results inglobal industrial pollution, contamination of air, water, foodstuffs etc. andalso sickness ,death of plants, animals and people. Another dimension ofrisk is social transformation with modernity. There is a process ofindividualization deprive class distints but inequalities by no meansdisappear. There is a shift from the system of standardised full employmentto the system of flexible and pluralised under employment.Risk ofscientific development increases disproportionately faster than solution. With the globalisation of industrial society political system looses itsfunction as modernization, technoeconomic system changes the realms ofsocial life and on other hand political systens pre-supposes condition ofthe system. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Book contains many chapters to help get you started
I purchased this book to learn specific details and look at applications for the functions present in bioconductor.I have had trouble applying some of the chapters to custom data because they are written for specific microarray/data formats.Overall, this book is a good value because it contains examples of how bioconductor can be used to aid in hypothesis testing, but I struggle to apply what I have read to the different types of data I have. The section on Statistical analysis for genomic experiments and the section on gaphs and networks should be the reason you purchase this book. They are very helpful and interesting. The case studies were not very helpful in my opinion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mathematical & Biostatistical Epidemiological Methods
This is a very good textbook and reference for those seeking to model and understand epidemiology techniques.Calculus and probability theory are introduced at a basic level and the book progresses onto advanced concepts of statistical modeling. It has an A to Z format which makes it useful for looking up topics easily. The book starts out with fundamental techniques but explores complicated topics in greater detail toward the end of the single volume.I really like it as an MPH Student interested in epidemiology and plan on using it alot more in my career.Five Hundred dollars is alot, but probably worth it.This book is possibly not an absolute necessity, but I am glad I purchased it when I did, in the first year of the MPH Program.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, detailed overview for both experts and novices
This text is an excellent textbook for both infectious disease professionals and for students of infectious disease epidemiology. Nelson and colleagues cover a range of essential topics from a survey of important historical epidemics to study designs for infectious disease investigations. The first part of the text covers ID epidemiology background and methodology, whereas the second focuses on specific diseases as examples of different transmission modalities. TB, HIV and Influenza are among the pathogens discussed in great detail. Chapters are written by experts in their respective fields, making this textbook not only authoritative, but also up-to-date in scope and content. Many of the authors are affiliated with the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health or the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine."Infectious Disease Epidemiology" is extremely readable, and serves as an excellent reference tool. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for me...
There were a lot of negative comments for this book on Amazon so I sort of held off the purchase ofthis book. However, last week I ordered the book and quickly realised it is very useful. The book may lack detailed theory but excellent references are scattered throughout if you really want to follow it up. And the book is easy reading and well written with most statistical concepts defined before they are used.1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I think there would be a real interest in a book on "computational statistics" and related topics that showed details of analyses and algorithms using Matlab. This book is expensive and extremely disappointing. The explanations are sparse and very weak and the m.files are usually small add-ons to functions from the Stats Toolbox.1-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
My major complain was that the authors, in general, did not present algorithms clearly. Limit selections of algorithms did not help either. As a result, you cannot use this book as a reference because it just does not contain enough material. You cannot learn much about computational statistics with this book becuase the statistic methods and algorithms are not adequately presented. you cannot even write codes for your own statistic analysis with the MATLAB examples shown in the book unless you have the Statistics Toolbox. 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential textbook for health care professionals!
Clinical Epidemiology has become a core element in the understanding and treatment of human illness. Defined as a method of generating valid conclusions from clinical observations, clinical epidemiology arms health practitioners with skills essential for modern health care. As a Physical Therapist (PT) I am often asked to render a diagnosis based on clinical hypotheses with "soft" measurements like pain, distress and function loss; how can I ensure that my diagnosis is correct? Traditional practice encourages the health care student to believe that knowing enough anatomy & physiology will somehow optimise health care outcomes. This book not only challenges that view but it also arms the reader with the knowledge and applicable skills to interpret research and also to ensure that any work you carry out is robust and in keeping with EBM principles. A highly recommended text and great value for money. A must for lecturers, student PT's and anyone who wonders how they can improve their critical analysis of health care practice. Don't treat patients without a copy on your shelf (assuming of course you read it...osmosis is NOT a recognised learning tool).

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough insight into basic clinical epidemiology
The authors explain the basic principles and basic concepts of clinical epidemiology in a clear and understandable way. Examples for each subject make reading pleasant and easy, contrary to what one may expect in a book of this kind. 5-0 out of 5 stars A excelent book to the beginner
Clinical Epidemiology has been considered the new 'Basic Science' to medical students. This book offers a excelent approach to main problems found by beginners in this vast field of knowledge like how to deal with Statistics and with the huge number of papers published. With a easy language this book is good option to get started in this branch of Medicine now called the 'Science of the Art'. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I am a grad student working on the data analysis for my thesis and this book helped me enormously! The problem with other statistics books is that they give data sets and examples that don't relate to types of data that field biologists half to deal with. My biggest problem was figuring out what kind of statistical tests I needed to use for the kind of data that I had collected, and this book answered many of my questions in that area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whew!
When I found myself among seniors in one experiments in ecology class in university (I am a sophomore), I found to my dismay that others knew statistics way better than me. Although I learned probability and statistics in 10th grade, it's been 4 years since then. Therefore, I was in a despate need of a good book. I got this book along with Experimental Design for Data Analysis for Biologists, but I liked this book way better. It's more easy to read (perfect for busy students), has a couple of useful examples, and it's helping me a lot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Consice and well written review of field biology statistics

4-0 out of 5 stars Needed for Class
This is a really great book. It is well written and seems easy to follow. IT was required for my Intro to Research class. It will be helpful as well in the development of my capstone/research project for graduaiton.

4-0 out of 5 stars IT HAS A REFINED ANALYTICAL APPROACH
"Designing Clinical Research: An Epidermiologic Approach" did a thorough analysis of various methodologies, which medical scientists could use in everyday research. It, first of all, outlined all the essential steps (used in epidemiological research), before delving into the analysis of each step. Its information is current and versatile. But, certain important issues like research-funding and statistics received less than expected attention. Despite this flaw, I would still recommend this book to scientists. Its pros did exceed its cons by a mile.

4-0 out of 5 stars excessively convenience-oriented book
On the whole this book is an excellent work.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I've found on the topic!
This book was the text for the intro to Biostat class at Columbia University this year.It is lucid, well organized, doesn't bog down in details or equations, and gives a good introductory explanation of the basic statistical methods, their rationale for use, and their various assumptions and shortcomings.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for teaching med stats
I have been teaching statistical methods and epidemiology for graduate students in the health area for more than 5 years and this book is a hit. Previously I tried Armitage & Berry and got a lot of resistance from the students. Altman's book is well organized, presents the problems and their solutions in a very intuitive way, and focus on the real problems in the area. Very good for introductory courses. I usually use Kirkwood's Essentials of Medical Statistics in parallel.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent intermediate level treatment of biostatistics
This is a very well written and popular text on biostatistics. Altman writes for non-statisticians but the book is best suited for those with at least one prior course in statistics and those who have had mathematics through high school algebra. Emphasis is placed on the important practical problems. Good statistical designs and analyses are emphasized. The pitfalls with many published medical articles are discussed in Chapter 16.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant introduction to medical epidemiology
Although having graduated some time ago I just keep returning to this well written and crystal-clear undergraduate book on basic epidemiology. This explains clearly also the most basic and important statistical approaches in analyzing data, although leaving multivariate analyses mostly out. However, that might be considered as a virtue as well beacuse the book stays at a very simple level and thus not scare you off it.

5-0 out of 5 stars For any student on epidemiology and biostatistics
One should not be afraid regarding the edition (1987). It is still a powerfull tool for any student on epidemiology or biostatistics. Despite being not a huge book, it is comprehensive enough for students of any leveland perhaps as a companion to established professionals.
