5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
This book is a hybrid, part epidemiology and part statistics. It is a resource for those that want to DO epidemiologic studies and ensure that they are performing and interpreting the statistics correctly.Jewell does all the little things right: he delivers the message in plain English, he explains thoroughly the foundations of the various epidemiologic measures of association, and he points out the pitfalls and potential misapplications of the presented statistical tools. The chapters on confounding and interaction are the clearest and the best that I have read.I endorse this book whole-heartedly

Book in new, mint condition as advertized. No hassles, no problems at all. Arrived within the projected delivery date, and shipping was free! Great, easy, reliable service. I've never had a problem buying from Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I had a chance to read this book cover to cover. All I can say is "absolutely outstanding", short of calling it a historical masterpiece in the field. Very rarely do I encounter an epidemiology or biostatistic textbook that reads so well. It is optimally reader friendly; the author appears to have such a talent in explaining some most sophisticated epidemiological and statistical concepts in such a simplified language. Yet he does not sacrifice the inclusion of some very advanced epidemiological and statistical concepts. New concepts such as causal graphs and instrumental variables are also included and explained beautifully. I strongly recommend this book to all early to intermediate graduate students majoring in Epidemiology. Established epidemiologists may wish to read this book to refresh and update their knowledge. I hope the author writes more textbooks with the same style. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarity at last!
I'm ABD Economics and down to the dissertation.I have 10 titles on my shelf that deal directly with survival/event-history analysis.I've plowed though them all. Finally (!) I have one that is useful; and, this is the one.If you are not already familiar with this method and/or you are only going to get one book - this is the one to acquire.Far and away it beats everything else I've purchased. Don't be put off the by epidemiological examples - they're easy enough to read through. The authors' personal preference seems to be for STATA, but SAS and SPSS code are available in the appendix.

4-0 out of 5 stars useful book
this is a very useful book to introduce you to the concepts of survival analysis. It is better for those who already have basic knoweledge abour regression models but it can be used by beginners as well. Basic knowledge of statistics is strongly required.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only survival analysis book you'll ever need
A very well written, step by step book on survivalanalysis, recommendedfor all, absolute beginners as well as experienced

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding introduction to epidemiology
I'm a doctoral student in epidemiology and I have become familiar with a number of introductory textbooks in epidemiology over the past few years.I think Rothman's book is one of the best of the lot.I found it particularly useful as a bridge between basic introductory textbooks such as Gordis' "Epidemiology" and Rothman & Greenland's "Modern Epidemiology".Rothman's introductory text does an excellent job of selectively covering important topics in epidemiology at a level of detail that is appropriate to its intended audience. The writing style is relaxed yet precise and lucid. His coverage of study designs and bias is particularly illuminating. Some topics such as the interpretation of diagnostic tests and screening are not covered. However, as an introduction to the principles and concepts of epidemiology, the book serves its purpose very well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Mr. Rothman.... Not Bad.
Rothman's introductory Epidemiology book is quite user friendly in that it is well organized, clear, and concise. Some students may run into some difficulties, however, if they rely solely on this book as their main resource for their graduate level work. Rothman only scratches the surface in some areas, which may be frustrating at times...The book certainly lives up to its title of being "An Introduction." Unfortunately, that means starving graduate students will have to splurge on "Epidemiology: The Body" and "Epidemiology: The Conclusion," if they want to gain a truly in-depth and comprehensive perspective. Unfortunately, these books, to my knowledge, have yet to be written. Nevertheless, Rothman's book is definitely useful for acquiring a basic understanding of the fundamental concepts in epidemiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best conceptual epi book published to date
To my knowledge, this is the best and simplest textbook in epidemiology that has been published to date. I could compare it with practically all the 'mainstream' textbooks that I have been using, more or less recent, and more or less detailed textbooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars great help to resident
As a resident, I frequently prepared journal clubs, where we have to carefully discuss and scrutinize studies. I gained some introduction from "Appleton and Lange's Review of Epidemiology and Biostatistics for the USMLE". But preparing for journal clubs was quite different. There are many of statistical and epidemiological terminology in each article, some I am familiar with, but others are confusing and new. In this very helpful "dictionary" I was able to find more than 95% of the terms with brief definition and good short explanation that successfully allowed me to soundly evaluate the studies and prepare an impressive brief, neat handouts. The great thing about this dictionary was its well organization and ease to find what you are looking for. My friends frequently borrowed when they have to prepare their journal clubs, and found it really helpful.4-0 out of 5 stars "The" dictionary of epidemiology
One of the major problems with studying the field of epidemiology is the inconsistency of terminology that is used. This is because the field is relatively young, is actively evolving and has developed from multipleother disciplines including the social sciences as well as the medicalsciences and statistics. As a result, it can be both confusing andfrustrating for the student. This dictionary is the "bible" ofterminology for the fireld, in part because there is no other. This shouldbe an absolute requirement for the shelf of every student in the field ofepidemiology. Even experienced epidemiologists are encouraged to have acopy for reference purposes. The only caution is that a new edition is dueout soon. It can only be better than the first edition.Get it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pdq Statistics (PDQ Series)
In these times, you can't walk in the streets without hear or read some statistics, in the paper, in the market or everywhere.
5-0 out of 5 stars In a class of its own!
This book is the only statistics book of its type. For each section covering a specific statistical method (from simple methods to those you may not even cover in your PhD training), a concise 2-5 page summary is presented. The goal is not to enable the reader to calculate any of these statistics, but to understand conceptually what each statistic means. This is where it can fill in information other statistics texts never get to.A student (or researcher!) who can churn out factorial ANOVA results, but doesn't truly understand what they mean can turn to this book for clarity. It's simple (for statistics), it's short, it's clear, and you have to love a book that is dedicated "To the many people who have made this book both possible and necessary -- authors of other statistics books"!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
I've spent years looking for a book on statistics that is lucid for professionals who need to use statistical methods but who don't want to get a Ph.D. in math to be able to undertand them.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars clear coverage for practicing biostatisticians
Advances in the theory of repeated significance testing in the 1980s and 1990s has made sequential methods practical by identifying stopping rules for data collected sequentially but in groups. This material is now used to plan interim analyses and both safety and efficacy group sequential trials for clinical trials. This text provides for the first time thorough coverage of these advances with suitable references to the literature.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
This book is incredably well-written. Although I had not read a statistics text in 12 years, this book balanced theoretical development, explanation, and examples in such a way that it was actually easy to read. The organization of the book makes looking up a particular topic very easy. The reference list is extensive. The best thing about the book is the set of graphics and maps to illustrate the mathematics, modeling, and outcomes. This book is a must-have for anyone involved in spatial statistics, disease clustering, epidemiology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Logistic Regression
Kleinbaum has done it again. His books are so informative and easy to understand. It is worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
Simply the best logistic regression book I've seen.Concepts clearly and succinctly explained and illustrated.
4-0 out of 5 stars depends on what background you are coming from...
I'm a physician learning about clinical research/biostatistics etc.I found that this book was extremely helpful in guiding me through basic rules, steps and theories on how to build a logistic regression model. The examples where straight forward, even for a person without a strong math background. However, I can also see that this would not be enough for a person set out to be a biostatistician, as this book would seem rather elementary. If you are a person with a so-so background in math and statistics, and are interested in learning to adequately perform statistical analyses with logistic regression, this is the book for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Statistics in plane english.
If you can not explaine it in plane english you probably don't undestand it yourself. In this book the author present a clear explanation of this technical field in plane english.

2-0 out of 5 stars good material, too many errors
It's a decent book overall. The material is not too hard to underestand, and there are a lot of medical examples. However, there's nearly a typo on every other page. I wouldn't mind if the mistakes were minor, but it's too much when a third of the solutions are wrong, and statistical tables are incorrect (e.g. 6-8 & 6-9).

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-mathematical introduction to biostatistics
This is not a treatise in mathematics. The author uses easy to understand examples to explain concepts.Other reviewers have noted typos that altered their learning experience; I have not.Other reviewers report that the presentation of ANOVA is not easily understood; I disagree.Statisticians that are used to the Fisher and Scheff methods of explaining ANOVA will clearly find this different.I actually found it useful to present ANOVA before the T-test and to use the examples he did.Glantz's text on regression and ANOVA is also very good. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I was forced to buy it.
It's an okay text but the author quotes himself a lot.I just wish all the tables and formulas were in a specific location and the symbols for the formulas defined each time a new one was presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Start Here for Medical Statistics
Clearly and logically set out starting with the reasons for medical statistics and how studies are designed and moving logically to the methods used. All practicing doctors need to know something about medical statistics. This is a very good place to start. It is written for non-mathematicians but has enough mathematics to justify the information presented and stimulate further interest. It is a relatively short book with clear logical explanations rather than flashy illustrations and computer graphics. Also provides exercises, essential in all mathematical subjects.

4-0 out of 5 stars another fine statistics text for medical students
This is the second edition of an excellent introductory text for medical students similar to Doug Altman's. Bland covers the basics: designing clinical trials and epidemiological studies, data collection, summarizing data, basic probability, standard errors and confidence intervals along with tests of significance (both parametric and nonparametric). Various types of regression methods are covered and this edition adds Cox proportional hazards models and meta-analysis. Many exercises and examples are taken from Bland's 20 years of experience as a medical statistician. It is noteworthy for dealing with sample size issues in Chapter 18. Mortality statistics and life tables are covered in Chapter 16.Read more
