4-0 out of 5 stars Reading and Understanding Multivariate Statistics by Grimm
A good resource for someone taking a psyc stat class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Treatment of Sophisticated Mathemeatical Concepts
I've long wanted a better explanation of Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues than I recieved in a econometrics or statistics textbook. This book gives me an incredibly clear understanding of what they are. Now when I look back at the mathematical interpretation again it means so much more. This is a fantastic book that would highly recommend to anyone wanting a clear conceptual understanding of these sophisticated topics. 5 stars, no questions about it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Statistics
In many introductory statistics courses you usually do not cover multivariate statistics. This book and its companion volume are useful for anyone in upper level undergraduate or graduate programs. It is a great reference to have when planning research.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Health Policy
This book is very well written. Though it crams a lot of information into a small number of pages, it is easy to understand. It is excellent at covering all angles of a topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little too focused on clinicians
I needed a book to use for a class I am teaching. This book, while excellent was focused on the clinicians' point of view, somewhat to the exclusion of other angles.

5-0 out of 5 stars exccellent book, wish the price is cheaper
One of my collegues recommended this book to me. It surprised me that it has a very broader coverage of topics in medicine where mixed model is appropriate. This book talked many pratical issues such as "why the mixed model failed to converge" etc. The mathematical background is not demanding. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book!
This book is really useful and handy. It is very well written and easy to read. As the name stated, it provides very practical guides for those who don't have strong background in Statistics but are dealing with longitudinal data. It is written in an example guided format. The outputs from the analysis and guidelines on how to interpret them step by step are included. There is no heavy Statistical notation and you don't need to translate Statistics into English. At the end of the book, there are chapters of how to handle missing data and softwares used in longitudinal data analysis. This book is probably too boring if you are a hardcore Statistician. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
I am glad to read this book before I prepared for my statistical clinical studies. This book could give you basic ideas, but you need to discuss with your collegues or use more advanced books to improve further.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding biostatistics without becoming a statistican
As a medical writer and editor at The Cleveland Clinic, Thomas A. Lang found that the lack of clear understanding of statistics by non-statisticians affected the clarity of their writing. Physicians had thesame problem while writing up their research papers for publication. Langperceived a need among medical and science writers to understand justenough of biostatistics to make them better writers and editors withoutbecoming statisticians themselves. He devised workshops that were conductedby the American Medical Writers Association which were enormouslysuccessful. The logical next step was to write this book based on thevaluable teaching experience and feedback he got at those courses. In otherwords, this is a book that wasn't written in a vacuum but is the result ofa perceived need, and the author's experience in meeting that need.Co-author Michelle Secic has also contributed with her expertise, making ita valuable book for people in this field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
A statistician might find Gehlbach's explanations a bit too simplistic, but I think it gives a fantastic overview of how to approach interpretation of journal articles. An attending asked us to buy the second edition of this book when I was a 3rd Year med student, and I still use it today teaching residents. He does an excellent job using examples from the literature to illustrate his points. And, unlike other statistical texts, the index can help you grasp topics like the null hypothesis or type I error very quickly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Board Specific
I first encountered this book when it was called "Biostatistics for the Boards" when I took the course from Dr. Glaser when he was teaching at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in 1990. Dr. Glaser was an exceptionally good and popular teacher and the book reflects his "no-nonsense" style. At first I thought it was a "dumbed down" statistics book as I had taken a full year of stats in college and my previous books had been huge and heavy textbooks. However, I soon found that the reason Dr. Glaser's book was so brief was that he concentrates only on the type of concepts and questions you will find on the USMLE step 1. The chapters are short and it is easy to review each one many times to firmly plant the info into long term memory. I had no problems at all with the stats on the USMLE. This book presents exactly what you need to answer all the questions on the USMLE without having you waste a lot of time studying things you will never use.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best source for USMLE
Are you one of those people that are scared of Biostatistics? Fear no more!! This book is for you. It explains everything in a very smart and simple way. Plenty of examples and tests help you to master the subject. If you study this book well, you will "understand" biostatistics and you don't have to memorize nonsense informations. two thumbs up!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great New Spatial Methods Book for Epidemiology
"Spatial Epidemiology" mixes practical application with theory to provide a critical review of methods, challenges, issues, strengths, and limitations of spatial analysis in epidemiology.Subsections of the book progress from types of data, to statistical methods, to disease mapping and clustering, then end with exposures and links to health. Each subsection includes at least one chapter presenting spatial analytical theory, one chapter providing an overview of spatial analytical methods, one chapter reviewing a particular spatial analytical method in depth, a chapter applying a method, and one specialty chapter.Authors have included equations, comprehensive examples from both chronic and infectious diseases, and extensive references to other chapters and other works for each method presented.Earlier chapters provide a thorough background discussion of data issues that will be particularily useful to novices in the field.Statistical chapters assume intermediate or more advanced experience with spatial analysis, however, provide references to background and seminal works that will allow novices to the field to optimize their learning experience. There are several chapters devoted to cluster analysis, Bayesian analysis, and modeling which are particularily useful.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars And the winner is...
There are two modern books in the field. This one by Profs Zhou, Obuchowski,McClish and the book by Prof. Pepe. All four are experts in this field. Both books present the same aspects of statistical diagnostic testing and both can be of invaluable help for researchers (both applied and more academic) and graduate students. However, Professor Pepe has done an excellent job (if I may) using a clear, concise notation and language throughout. On the other hand this book (ZOM) is not that well written, giving more weight in the presentation of the personal research of the authors. As a result there is some notation inconsistency (not too puzzling though) and the flow of the text is not that smooth. Both books have full reference lists, they present interesting applications and give a number of exercises at the end of each chapter. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE!
This is a must have book for behavioral science and epidemiology - use this book to study for the course and also to study for step 1. The thumbnail tables are excellent and focuses on exactly what you need to know/what is frequently tested. Each topic is concise and to the point. You get exactly what you need to know. The reason why I gave it four stars instead of five is that it does not have a lot of review questions to solidify what you have learned, but there are a few questons after every topic that is covered. This book is written so well that you are able to understand and retain the information pretty well. Many times in behavioral science courses students are assigned some pretty thick texts to read out of, so if you are scrambling for a behavioral science and epidemiology book that is right to the point and provides you with a great foundation in this subject I highly recommend getting this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING RESOURCE FOR PSYCHIATRY and EPIDEMIOLOGY
There are books that you use in order to learn course material. Then there are books that captivate you and impart their knowledge onto you for a lifetime. Neugroschl and Hoblyn's excellent Blueprints Notes and Cases in Behavioral Science and Epidemiology is quiet simply the model of review books. The authors' comprehensive brilliance is displayed in page after page of thoughtful and thought-provoking material, which provides thorough coverage of all vital and relevant information, yet never treads into the dark realm of minutiae. The book is brilliantly organized into unique and classic cases with case-based questions that are nearly identical to the Psychiatry Shelf and Step 2 questions. My score on Step 2 was a whopping 284 - and I scored in the 100% and 99%, respectively, on the Behavioral Science and Epidemiology sections. The only book I used throughout my Psychiatry rotation and to prepare for Step 2 was this book. Beyond scores though, this book has made me a more competent clinician. My approach and management of psychiatric patients borders on brilliance, thanks in large part to this text. It covers the whole spectrum of disorders and virtually every reasonable and widely accepted treatment. The format and syntax of the text is rapidly consumed, easily assimilated, and effectively recalled. I recall passages and examples wholly intact, and use the wisdom in patient managament daily. I am going into emergency medicine and have used suggestions from the book repeatedly in management of many diverse patients since the completion of my psychiatry rotation. The epidemiology portion is similarly outstanding. It teaches epidemiological principles and stastical analysis in an intelligent, thorough, and useful fahsion, and will make you an adept and critical analyst of the medical literature. I have two PhD candidate colleagues who use this book as their primary resource for understanding and evaluating the medical literature and for designing their own protocols. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as impressive as I first thought
Daniel obviously knows his statistics; but, I wouldnt think that is too helpful for individuals reading or studying from his textbook.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text for 2nd Statistics Class
I'm taking my first biostatistics class in medical school, but the text I am using in class (Rosner) has lost me.I subsequently borrowed Daniel's book from the library (only because it has 7th editions), and I am glad that I picked it!Daniel is a good writer. The book is well organized and laid out.Important concepts are emphased and explained with minimum mathematics involved. The well thought out examples are worth working through as well for clarification of the applications of important concepts. However, as a beginner in statistics, I was lost in the midst of mathematics on certain concepts (given that I have a relatively strong mathematics background) without really understanding the meaning of some very basic terms, like percentile, confidence intervals.

5-0 out of 5 stars heavy on issues, provocative and with minimal mathematics
Senn is a great writer. He has written an excellent text on cross-over trials that raises many issues about when such design can be used and what their limitations are. This book covers the gamut of issues in drug development concentrating on important and sometimes subtle issues in clinical trials including design and analysis, intention to treat principle, multiple testing, Bayesian and frequentist approaches and interpretations, meta analysis, regulatory issues and ethics. It also covers cross-over designs, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and pharmacoeconomics.Read more
