5-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition in the relm of epidemiology
Amidst the fanciful claims for the health impact of diets and nutritional supplements some reason and science must prevail. In "Nutritional Epidemiology", Walter Willett has updated the substantial contribution to this task made by the 1st edition of his book. Topics covered include approaches to diet assessment in individuals and populations, pitfalls of diet questionaires and other measures of nutritional status and the evidence for a role of diet in a range of disease states. This comprehensive review of the art and science of dietary assessment is of great value to readers from a broad range of scientific and medical backgrounds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference text
This text is a great reference for everything from basic analysis to more advanced topics like longitudinal and time-to-event data. The book is well-written with relevant, current examples. If I had to choose one reference book, this would be it because of its depth and breadth of content (at the intermediate level).

1-0 out of 5 stars From an M.D.'s perspective taking a Masters Degree in Stats
This was a terrible book. To say that it is user unfriendly is an understatement. It is wordy and too long, furthermore, it doesn't teach you what you need to know. It is difficult to reference things (for example, try looking up sensitivity in the index!) and the writing is very tangential. This is not a good book if you are just starting out. I would not receommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars nice intermediate level text in biostatistics
The authors write well and cover most of the important topics very thoroughly. They motivate the subject very well with a number of important and "real world" examples in the first chapter.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful in practice
The purpose of this book was supposed to serve very broad groups of people: students, statisticians and engineers. Unfortunately, I found this book not quite suitable in engineering practice.5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive modern account of reliability
Reliability and survival analysis both deal with time to failure data. Much of the methodology is essentially the same. The term reliability is generally used to apply to hardware or software whereas survival analysis is a term for biological systems such as animals or humans. This book includes the standard nonparametric and parametric methods for estimating reliability functions and parameters. It includes system reliability and repairable systems and deals with recent developments with repairable systems including Nelson's mean cumulative function. A couple of years ago I asked Wayne Nelson if and when he might revise his popular text "Applied Life Data Analysis". He said he did not plan to do it because Meeker and Escobar had just finished a work that would be as good as any revision he might want to produce. Other topics include failure time regression models including the popular Cox proportional hazards model and accelerated life test models. It also includes modern topics such as bootstrap confidence intervals (both semi-parametric and nonparametric) for reliability parameters. The book is comprehensive and up-to-date. It also includes discussion of Bayesian methods. Some case studies are also included. The only topics it misses are reliability growth and warranty and service contracts. These topics are covered in the recent book by Blischke and Murthy "Reliability Modeling, Prediciton, and Optimization" also published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc.5-0 out of 5 stars A superlative resource for understanding reliability.
Reliability data isn't amenable to treatment with the ubiquitous normaldistribution, a fact which should catch the attention of any practicingengineer with only that bullet in his gun.Reliability data has otherdistinguishing features. The data are usually censored, which means theexact failure times are not known so the observations can only providebounds on the actual failure times.Inferences and predictions usuallyrequire extrapolations, making engineering and physics-based modeling animportant adjunct to statistical methods.Whereas many *statistical*problems focus on parameter estimation (e.g.: mean, standard deviation),these are not of primary interest to engineers who need specific measuresof product reliability (e.g.: failure probabilities, life distributionquintiles, failure rates).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pres. of epi & data-analysis -mostly for students
This book can both be used as a first time introduction to epidemiology and the most popular statistical methods employed in health research, but also for looking up things when you need it, since it is actually quite thorough on a lot of subjects in the field. This is, however, not the best thing about the book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Consice but too Compact
While what the book does explain about the statistical theory mentioned, it is too compact for what it tries to explain. There are also no answers to the excercises, which would be quite helpful given some of the questions asked. It's great for applications and is a good handbook, but for a thorough explanation of everything involved, I recomend getting a bigger textbook! For my 4th year Generalized Linear Models stats class, this book is helpful, but at times too compact to be more useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most clearly written book on the topic
My copy of the second edition just arrived yesterday and it is even better than the first edition (which was fantastic). The logical organization and clarity of writing make this book a 'must have' for any statistician's library.I'd give it 6 stars if I could.Readers should also check out McCulloch and Searle's 'Generalized, Linear and Mixed Models'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent concept - Execution could be better
I wish somebody would write a concise tutorial of the matematics required for an "intermediate" book such as Dobson's. Undoubtedly for someone whose acquaintence with modern statitical methods is more current this book is a gem. For someone like myself who wants a refresher and whose math is a bit rusty it leaves something to be desired. Some of the theoretical derivations in chapters 3 and 4 (keys to the understanding of the rest of the book) would be improved by a bit more detail and a thoroughly worked example. A major shortcoming is the lack of answers to the excercises; I don't see how the book was published without them. If the book was 100 pages longer with the addition of the aforementioned material, I would have given it a five star rating. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Canto: An unfortunate redaction of a timeless classic
Don't get me wrong -- "On Growth and Form" is one of my absolute top favorite books of all time. Possibly my favorite book, in fact. This review is a warning to make sure you get the right imprint.
5-0 out of 5 stars On Growth and Form
On Growth and Form written by D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson is a classic and should be found on the bookshelf of any well read person.5-0 out of 5 stars A misunderstood classic
A great book, to be read by all biophysicists-to-be.

5-0 out of 5 stars measuring health: a guide to rating scales and questionnaires
Great resource.A gold-standard for anyone in the field of health psychology

5-0 out of 5 stars For reliability and validity
In an era of accountability, McDowell and Newell do an excellent job of pulling together instruments to assess patients' health. Although this volume was primary designed for Occupational and Physical Therapists, it should have a broader audience. It includes over 80 instruments with a summary on how to employ each device with estimates of reliability and validity. They give more than adequate details to enable the professional to make decisions regarding the quality and appropriateness of each single measure.Users of these tools need to comprehend the extreme lengths that it took for McDowell and Newell to accomplish their task.Their work is truly impressive. On pages 47-50, the authors do a particularly good job explaining the difference between ADL and IADL. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Journal of the Kentucky Medical Association
From the start I felt intimidated by the title and even with the mitigating suggestion that this would be practical, a guide, and for the clinician, the challenge was there. Throughout our training, in textbooks and journals, and in many lectures, we have to analyze the information put in front of us.Our background in basic statistics is typically primitive, and certainly could use some help in understanding what we read. This very readable and even interesting 200 plus page book really fills that need. With an introduction as much seductive as informative, Dr. Katz makes his way through his early chapters discussing common uses, outcome variables, types of regression and other basic definitions. He uses the question and answer format which lends itself to learning the information in a building block manner. He constructs the book with numerous examples, handy tables and graphs and very helpful side boxes filled with pithy hints for making progress through the book. Each chapter has a built in summary and completes the questions asked. The index is complete and very pointed, making the reader able to use the book not only to learn the subject, but to refer back to previous reading. This book had an enthusiastic first outing, and certainly this second edition is worth the price for a good reference.Journal of the Kentucky Medical Association, Vol 104 (8), 2006, p.395

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor organization: But Brief and Well Written
I used this book for a class last year. I found the organization quite horrible. There are 3 main multivariate models that he discusses in the book: Multiple regression, logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards. He ignores ANCOVA, ANOVA and multi-level frequency table (chi-square) methods.5-0 out of 5 stars It' a real pleasure!
This is one of the best books I have ever read about biostatistics. It takes you further -from the usually well known table statistics to the model statistics using a step by step approach. Without covering the overall field, it tries to fortell readers' questions and answers them in the most explicit way. It's a book to understand what is going on around journals and makes your steps easier once you decide to try your way to dive in your numbers. ... Read more
