5-0 out of 5 stars The best introductory review in print.
Worth its weight in gold. Covers the principles of every subject area required for board certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Includes numerous lists, tables, charts, and a full set of referenced questions and answers. Downright poignant considering the precipitous decline in America's public health and preventive medicine infrastructure since the day George W. Bush assumed office.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting read
This book lives up to its claim of being concise and easy-to-read but if you're looking to learn about medical statistics this isn't the right book.I'm a med student and this book didn't help me understand medical statistics. It is an interesting read, however, and I would recommend it just for that reason. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Data referenced in book are suspect
I found this book rather interesting, with a nice mix of methods and applications. I intended to use some of the examples in a course that I am teaching. There are many examples given which use data sets to illustrate important concepts. However, I was unable to access several of these data sets. I contacted the author and mentioned that I was particularly interested in accessing two of the data sets that were referenced in the book --- his reply was that data sets for the book were available at a specific URL. Indeed there were several data sets at this location; but, not the data sets that I had mentioned in my inquiry.5-0 out of 5 stars excellent coverage of randomization and resampling
Manly is an excellent writer who has written several excellent texts and is an editor of a biostatistics journal. This is a revision of a very popular text on randomization or permutation methods. Because of the immense popularity of bootstrap methods (a similar resampling procedure), he elected to add some coverage of the bootstrap. All topics are covered in a clear and scholarly style and examples from biology are given. The interested reader might also look at Good (2000), Permutation Methods, 2nd Edition, published by Springer-Verlag and Edgington, Randomization Tests published by Marcel Dekker for other accounts on permutation tests. There are now several good books dedicated to bootstrap methods including Davison and Hinkley (1997), Cambridge University Press, Efron and Tibshirani (1993), CRC-Chapman and Hall and Chernick (1999), John Wiley and Sons, Inc.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for EVERY biologist
Statistical analysis based on resampling methods are clearly the way the bulk of statistics should be done, and the trend is towards this.Manly gives an excellent and clear treatment introducing these methods in varioussettings in population biology. This book is clearly a must for anybiologist that has to deal with data, and it should be read by all suchbiologist.I shamelessly copy from this book when I present resamplingmethods to my graduate biostatistics class. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent text, very well written
My research involves compositional data in psychology in the scaling of preferences measured as continuous variables, e.g., proportions of time allocated to a task. I remember well the first time I encountered compositional data, dealing with some priority allocations on different policy preferences several years ago. I didn't realize the key issue at the time, namely the fact that a sum constraint on a multivariate data vector totally changes the sample space. For instance, it induces negative correlations in variables one would logically expect to be positively correlated. This can be very confusing until you realize what is going on. Doing something about it, however, is more complex. Aitcheson's book gives you the necessary tools to handle the problem. (Unfortunately software solutions are rarer and you will likely have to do some programming of your own.) This book is, as the editorial reviews indicate, the standard reference in the field. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a decent background in mathematical statistics. You certainly need to have a solid understanding of linear algebra and transformations of multivariate distributions to make your way through it, but it is very clearly written, the math is lucid, and it has the added benefit of Aitcheson's dry British wit throughout (presuming you enjoy that sort of thing). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Clinical Trials: A practical approach
I found this book almost 15 years ago when first designing a series of clinical trials for cytomegaovirus prevention in organ transplantation. It is a very practical "how to" volume, extremely well written andconcise. I recommend this to all clinical investigators who are startingout, and for all trainees. I have been waiting for his revised edition forover a decade and only hope he will update this great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best statistics texts available today!
As a biostatistics PhD student I've had to endure many very poorly written textbooks (though there are many good one's too). Not only is this book a great text on applied survival analysis, it's a great piece of statistical writing and should be used as an example for all applied texts. The general approach of introducing the theory followed by examples with SAS/SPlus code makes learning the material easy and fun.I wish all statistics texts were even half this good!

4-0 out of 5 stars Anderson et al for the common man
This text is one of the few to make the work of Andersen et al. (Statistical Models Based on Counting Processes, Springer, 1993) accessible to the average statistician. It has three limitations:5-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of extensions to important models
Terry Therneau is a research statistician at the Mayo Clinic and Patricia Grambsch is a Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Minnesota. The Cox proportional hazards model has been one of the key methods for analyzing survival data with covariates for the last 25 years. Proportionality is a key assumption that limits its use. There has long been a need to find methods which diagnose when the hazard rates are not proportional and provide alternative methods in such situations. Using the theory of counting processes the authors are able to extend the Cox model to more general situations including multiple/correlated event data using either marginal models or random effects (frailty) models. Time dependent covariates are also covered. Some of the theory of martigales and counting processes is included to make the book self-contained. Generalized residuals are used to identify outlying and influential observations (analogous to ordinary regression) and also to assess the proportional hazards assumption.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and difficult book
This was a difficult book for me to read and review and I think it would be tough to write as well. Biostatistics is taught generally devoid of its epidemiological context but this book tries to break a new ground and tries to show use of biostatistics in derivations of epidemiology measures. This makes the book theoritical which is what I was looking for. It succesfully breaks a new ground in some places particularly on on confounding where author summarizes recent literature neatly. However, other chapters require knowledge of Maximum Likelihood (ML) methods which are covered in an intermediate biostatistic texts like Larsen and Marx. This book is interesting because its the only book which I have found which covers the ML methods for odds ratio but this is the only book which covers them. Disappointingly, the author skips derivations and reaches straight to the results which is frustating. Since this is textbook for advanced students and author assumes knowledge of ML methods, eschewing details and derivations is sad. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The language and principles of biostatistics made accessible
For what this book intends, it truly is outstanding. In general, the medical researcher of any kind is at a severe disadvantage in dealing with professional biostatisticians because often the two do not speak a common language. This very readable, interesting and clearly written book gives the scientist enough knowledge to deal with most relatively simple cases in a language that we understand. With the basic principles of medical statistics made comprehensible, we are able to understand many of the simpler software packages well enough to perform basic statistical analyses and, more importantly, are able to converse intelligently with biostatistical professionals and to design studies that will pass muster. Unlike another reviewer, I do not feel that not covering SAS or other software programs is a disadvantage. No book can cover everything, and this book covers the basics and intermediate levels far better than any book I have seen, certainly better than any biostatistics book written by biostatisticians intended for other biostatisticians. This book understands that biostatistics is a tool, not a fundamental discipline, for the vast majority of scientists and is written to them. The book serves as a ready reference and review if one does not perform these analyses on a daily basis. This book should be on the shelf of every life scientist.

3-0 out of 5 stars Intermediate Level Medical Statistics
Want to get beyond primers and introductory texts but lack the background and expertise for the advanced texts. Here is a truly intermediate text which covers a broad range of topics and permits the reader to advance tothe next level. This book is chock full of insights without getting mireddown in technical detail and nomenclature. It delves just deep enough togive the arguments a foundation and extends them up to the point of claritywithout undue complexity. It can be read by anyone with a basicunderstanding and is a good text for epidemiologically oriented medicalscientists. I wish that it was paired with an advanced text that exploredeach one of the topics in more depth since many of the techniques are notdescribed in enough detail to perform the analysis without refering toother source material. Some greater attention could also be given to thewell established statistical software packages such as SAS, SPSS, andSTATA. It does repeatedly make the valuable point that if you proceedthrough an analysis without professional biostatistical consultation youare likely to be short changing your study or even commiting errors. Takeheed. It is important to know enough biostatistics to understand thetechniques but in almost all cases it is better to work with a professionalbiostatician than to go it alone. I only wish that there were moremedically savvy biostaticians like Matthews and Farewell. ... Read more
