4-0 out of 5 stars Pricey, but quicker than collecting articles by yourself
Perhaps more appropriately titled _Examples in Bayesian Biostatistics_, this book is organized as a series of articles on the use of Bayesian methods in a variety of biostatistical settings. The benefit of thisapproach is that each article is written by experts who provide theirowninsights to the methodology presented. The downside is that eacharticleis written by experts, who use slightly different notation, andexhibitvarying degrees of ability to communicate their results (they areon thewhole fairly good). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Joins the Technologies of EDA with MATLAB
Searching available data to determine insights and information is fundamental to EDA. When EDA was first being developed in the 1970's the avaialble computers were small and weak. As a result techniques to utilize small data sets with pencil and paper were developed. These proved that the concept had value in certain situations where the investigator did not have a preconceived notion of what he was seeking.

4-0 out of 5 stars unique book by two applied statisticians
Ed Korn and Barry Graubard are two statisticians in the health industry with strong statistical training. This is a very practical and specialized book which deals strictly with health surveys. Several national surveys are discussed. Many of the standard survey sampling topics including stratified random sampling and sampling proportional to size are covered. In addition modern ways for estimating variances including jackknife, balanced half-sample replication and bootstrap are covered. Beyond the standard topics there are topics in survival analysis that are included. Other practical issues such as weighted versus unweighted estimates and the use of imputation methods are included. They also include many exercises at the end of the chapters to make the book suitable for a course on the subject. Whole chapters are dedicated to interesting and unique topics such as "Analysis of Longitudinal Surveys", Chapter 7, "Analyses using Multiple Surveys", Chapter 8, and "Population-Based Case-Control Studies", Chapter 9. Appendix A gives detailed descriptions of the surveys analyzed in the book. It also contains a wealth of useful references from teh statistical literature. A good book for practitioners which does not require very high level mathematics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Analysis of Health Surveys
This is a very good textbook. There is no complex mathematcis, and a lot of real examples and exercises can help readers to understand the materials covered in the book. But it is too simple if it is used as a professionalreference. It tries to cover basic survey methodology, weighting, varianceestimation, cross-sectional analyses, longitudinal surveys and case-controlstudies in only such a small book (less than 400 pages). Definately, it cannot touch advanced parts of these areas. Anyway, it is very good for college students. You can learn a lot of very interesting ideas though thisbook even you do not have any knowledge about survey sampling andbiostatistics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book with a major flaw
Group-randomized trials are trials in which randomization takes place at a level higher than the individual subject. For example, for logistical reasons a comparison of two programs might be undertaken by randomizing communities to program, in which case the community rather than the resident is the unit of analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic and Still Great and Readable Book
With this book, John Maynard Smith initiated a major strand of modern theoretical biology! The book does not require sophisticated mathematical preparation, but it operates on a consistently high level of analyticalrigor. It is also very nicely written, with lots of biological examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reading: Broad or narrow?
This book assumes that the reading of medical texts is not just something that is self-evident, but something that can be learned by reading the book. "The traditional course in reading the medical literature consists of "Here's the New England Journal of Medicine. Read it!". Unlike this "sink or swim" method, this book provides a step-by step, active-participation approach to a clinical review of the medical literature. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars now a classic and still a great reference
This book was first published in 1986.As Fleiss states in his preface, the intention is to fill a gap in the standard texts on experimental designs by emphasizing and illustrating those that are useful in clinical studies. This book was clearly marketed for the rapidly growing and highly regulated pharmaceutical industry. In addition to the classic experimental designs, Fleiss covers cross-over designs and repeated measure designs that are important in clinical trials. He writes clearly and deals with the important issues in clinical trials including potential biases, blinding, randomized controls, multiple comparisons and repeated measures. The book starts off with a chapter that emphasizes the effect of measurement error and also provides some simple experiments on reliability of measurements.5-0 out of 5 stars A must for biostatisticians
This is the standard text on this subject.Recommend you have at least a Master's degree in statistics to take full advantage of this book. This book is too technical for non-statisticians, although they may get some useful infomation from the non-statistical discussions.

4-0 out of 5 stars A question from the autour
Dear Sirs I do not know if I can use this part as a tool for contacting the autour or not; however please excuse me if I have not used it properly:I am a student of epidemiology, and presently we are studying the following book: The Design and Analysis of Clinical Experiments; Joseph L. Fleiss; John Wiley & Sons; 1986.But on page 67 it seems that there is some misunderstandings: When we do a log transformation, in fact we are changing (or shifting) the previous distribution to a normal distribution. Without any doubts in this transformation the means of our previous distributions do not transfer to the means of the new distributions! In fact these are the medians of the previous distributions which are transferred to the place of the means of new distributions (of course if we presume that the new distributions are almost perfectly normal) and by finding the confidence interval of the difference of the means of new distributions (lambda1 - lambda2) we are finding the CI of ratio Median1/Median2. In this way it seems reasonable that the formula 3.25 be changed to Median1/ Median2.It would be very kind of you if you help me in this problem!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I disagree!
I wasn't going to review this series, but I have to say the above review is completely off base. The survey kit was a very necessary tool for my graduate thesis... especially in cleaning up the mess that the original survey designers created by NOT using the kit. I will say that unless you have a need for the ENTIRE kit, just buy specific books from it (Try searching "survey kit").

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money
Avoid this series at all costs! It is too simplistic to actually help you design or conduct a survey.A better strategy would be to select a few volumes from the Sage Applied Social Research Methods Series. (See Lavarakas, Fowler, and Mangione volumes.)I have seen Undergraduate text books that do a better job explaining survey research methods.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Effective Spoon Feeding
While this book and companion CD can seem a bit silly at first, they are worth doing. The material sticks with you, and the concepts are clearly and well explained. Even difficult concepts (ie. the difference between confounding and interaction) are handled well. It was some spoonfeeding, but the material has stuck with me in more advanced courses - I keep going back to this as a starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars ActivEpi Companion Textbook and CD Rom
The ActivEpi CD-Rom and Companion Text are a great combination.ActiveEpi is very quantitative - the depth of the coverage is beyond almost all typical intro epi textbooks.ActivEpi covers the basic material of measures of disease frequency and study designs. The Lessons on bias-related issues are very detailed and go into much more detail than found in almost any other epi text. The issues of interaction and confounding are covered in detail, as well as how to assess these in stratification and logistic regression. Also very in-depth discussion on matched case-control studies. There are a large number of quizzes and exercises.Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars A First Edition Text in Need of Revision
The ActiveEpi Companion Text is a companion to the ActiveEpi CD-ROM. Although marketed as both a "general reference" and "self-contained" textbook, it is neither. Many epidemiologic concepts are discussed with insufficient depth and important shades of grey are not called to the reader's attention. The ActiveEpi Text also falls short as a companion for the CD. It contains some of the busiest and most unappealing graphics I've ever seen: 1). Black and white text with low resolution figures and diagrams in various shades of gray; 2). Excessive underlining, italicizing and bolding; 3). More than a half dozen fonts on most pages; and 4). Lines of text closely crammed together with numerous boxes of every size and shape on many pages. The text also has quite a few typos and grammatical errors. Just a few examples from the first chapter include "elements of each area respond to a single mouse clicks" (p. 3), "it would be worthwhile to review the them one more time" (p. 8), and "the Homerwork and Projects for each lesson" (p. 12). ... I've been writing an overview of bio-statistics and have been immersed ina stack of statistics books and this one is my favorite, from theperspective of a non-statistician. Chapters are well organized and thematerial is covered thoroughly without bogging down in formulas. Medicalprofessionals will find this to be an excellent resource for understandingthe types of statistical methods used and reported in the well knownmedical journals. ... Read more
