    Editorial Review

This is serious stuff. The most widely used medical text in the world and the hypochondriac's bible, the Merck has the lowdown on the vast expanse of human diseases, disorders and injuries, as well as their symptoms and recommended therapy. It's intended for physicians and medical students, but though the type is tiny and the language technical, the Merck's a valuable volume for anyone with more than a passing interest in bodily ills. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Medical Guide
If a doctor gives me or someone else I know a diagnosis, I can look it up in the Manual and get a straightforward, detailed writeup about it.I always use it in conjunction with a doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Merck Manual - Medical Accuracy at Last
The Merck Manual has been in use in my psychology office for over 20 years. It is has been a wellspring of accurate albeit very technical information on every syndrome and disease that has been presented to me.It is an absolutely invaluable supplement to my psychological practice.HOWEVER....it is also a hypochondriac's nightmare, so those who obsess about their health should not buy it.For all others, it can make your visits to your doctor much more productive. And you can amaze and mystify your friends with incredible medical obscura!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it While Available!!!
This will be THE CLASSIC Merck Manual for many many years to come and for this reason alone any physician, allied medical rofessional, or hypchondriac should buy it.It is not only leather bound, but contains one hundred years of medical history that changed the face of Western Civilization. You may compare almonst one hundrend years and many generations of advances in medical knowledge and find no comparable period, from hand-washing and public health to AIDs to the discovery of penicillin and aspirin.

3-0 out of 5 stars Classic book.
Intro to physical examination. Easy and harmless.Liked the chapter summary. This is a book for all health care profesionals. Physicians should use DeGowin or Sapira.

1-0 out of 5 stars Index Incorrect
The index in the version I have is completely inaccurate. What's more, to obtain errata you're required to enter a code on the publisher's website. This code is not stamped on the book but is on the packaging which I unfortunately threw away before I noticed the index was completely inaccurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE derm book
There are several excellent dermatology texts in the market, but I believe this is the one to get, due to quality of pictures and organization. If you only have money for one, get this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars The book rules...plain and simple
I am a busy FP doc at a military base and I see a considerable amount of dermatologic complaints.I try to take care of most of it myself (since we have no dermatologist on staff) and find this book indispensable to my daily practice.I open it practically every day.For those of you who think the 'baby' Habif is enough, it's not!Trust me, I tried to scrape by with the 'baby' version for years before I bit the bullet and bought it.The sections on acne, eczema, dermatophytosis, and rosacea are outstanding.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good basic dermatology book
Habif is a classic. The pictures are among the best any dermatology textbook can have. Perhaps only Rassner has comparable pictures. But Habif has much more ones. The texts are well written and directed to easily and quick dermatology reference, on a basic point of view. I think it is a good book for dermatology knowledge introduction. If you want to go further on dermatology estudies, this a good firt step ,before more profound books, like fitzpatrick or Rook. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best ECG resource for med students
This book is an absolute gem. It's corny in places and has a few minor errors (autonomic physiology section for example), but it breaks down the nuts and bolts of ECG like no other resource. Some consider the book to be too basic; however, for a medical student's purpose, I disagree. I was called on on several occasions in internal medicine morning report and conferences to read ECGs of patients being discussed. I used the systematic method proposed by Dubin, and was commended by Staff on each occasion. The book breaks interpretation down and gives an algorithm: rate, rhythm, axis, intervals and hypertrophy and ischemia/damage. It's easy to learn because the book is very repititious. In fact, the repititious nature of the text may be irritating if you already have a good handle of ECG. Unlike other textbooks, once you've meticulously worked through this one, the knowledge gained is very easy to retain. I attribute this to the redundant nature of the book, i.e. while working through, you're contantly reminded of pertinent concepts previously presented in the text. This is definitely a five star resource for med students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best
I purchased almost every book on the market pertaining to ECG's and this is perhaps the best you will find? It has great illustrations and explains heart function/anatomy very well. Covers every technical aspect to the subject of cardiology. However, many of the ECG strips could have been illustrated a lot bigger and more clearer. Some of the ECG strips are fuzzy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unless your a cardiologist, stick with this book.
This is truly an excellent book on an important subject.I read this book once as a medical student and once again as an intern.I cannot imagine another book being better at teaching EKG interpretation.Maybe there are some other good onces out there, but you cannot go wrong here. This was quite helpful from a residents perspective when taking care of medicine patients. ... Editorial Review

Lia Lee was born in 1981 to a family of recent Hmong immigrants, and soon developed symptoms of epilepsy. By 1988 she was living at home but was brain dead after a tragic cycle of misunderstanding, overmedication, and culture clash: "What the doctors viewed as clinical efficiency the Hmong viewed as frosty arrogance." 4-0 out of 5 stars Well written...but some conclusions are just wrong!
This was a fascinating book.I enjoyed it and I learned a lot. I think the author didn't come to some conclusions which were painfully obvious. She continued to keep the theme of a culture that was impenetrable and would not change, even after thousands of years of persecution. What about after a few years of commercialism? It is only a matter of time before 2nd and 3rd generation Hmong will be completely assimilated into American culture. You could already see the signs when Fadiman described what the Lee children were doing now.Soccer, medical school, western music. It is inevitable. It is easy to keep a culture untouched for so long when you live in obscurity in the mountains with almost no interchange with the outside world. But when you put a TV in your house, the whole world is right there everyday. Now, the parents may not understand the language, but the kids sure do, and it will affect them.Twenty years from now, the shaman will be in the phone book and you can hire them perform at a kids birthday party, or there will be a class at the local community center on "Reconnecting to your Hmong Roots, all you need to learn in 8 weeks", just like the Native Americans, or learning hula dancing. When society is so connected by technology, you cannot live on a cultural island.I just don't believe it can happen.
5-0 out of 5 stars I grew up in Merced and had no idea about this
I grew up amongst the sizable population of Hmong immigrants in Merced during the time the Lees were going through this ordeal.
5-0 out of 5 stars just beautifully written
so all the praise i can possibly say about this book has been, so this will be short. all in all, even if i wasn't reading it for the subject matter, Fadiman's storytelling is amazing. not only is this book damn informative and perceptive-changing, it is also VERY ENTERTAINING. almost like a novel, it grips you at parts, makes you feel a gamult of emotions... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Sigh....
Another ubiquitous book. A "must have"....i don't own one. Don't want one. Too big. People just buy it for the pictures anyway, has anyone really read the text in Zitelli's? Most people use it as an atlas to review for boards...My logic is, if you're gonna just use it for pictures, why not buy the atlas by Shah? There are other atlases out there that are less cumbersome and cheaper. Plus, do you think the pedi board people will take a picture right out of a well-known text?
5-0 out of 5 stars Could not be better
This is the finest text a pediatrician can own for daily practice, board brush up and companion to the standard textbooks. It can fill many gaps inherent in the nature of pediatric training and is eminently relevant. If the authors never pen another things, they can be forever proud of this work. Brava.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Have for anyone in Peds
This is undoubtedly a must-have reference for anyone in pediatrics. This has a great collection of color images & is well-organized.The new edition is definitely weightier, but there is more text & more diagrams.Considering the cost, it's probably not worth getting the new edition if you already have the older one. However, if you're buying, buy the new one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars unplugged: reclaiming our right to die in america
unplugged delves into timely and essential subject matter with an entertaining, informative, wondrful style of writing.colby's insight to this pertinent topic is beneficial universally, as we all must confront these circumstances at some point in our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The right-to-die debate is once again tackled
The right-to-die debate is once again tackled; this time by a lawyer who represented Nancy Cruzan in the first right- to-die case heard by the Supreme Court. While Nancy Cruzan's struggles were chronicled in a prior book by Colby, Unplugged: Reclaiming Our Right To Die In America offers a broader perspective on the topic, moving beyond Cruzan's struggle to offer answers to legal, ethical, medical and personal issues involved in the debate. Court records, interviews and the authors' own experiences lend to the discussion of current laws, proposed changes, and their effects on society.

"Unplugged" is a book everyone who is going to die should read.It tells you what you need to do to make sure your wishes are respected when it comes to end-of-life decisions.Doing that will spare your loved ones unnecessary anguish. This book, believe it or not, is an engaging page turner and my 90-year-old mother just read it.We took its advice, talked about her wishes, and she now has a notarized health care power-of-attorney, giving us both much peace of mind. All this thanks to Colby's wonderfully written, timely, important book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Comforting and Enlightening
This book was reoommended by a friend who read it when her husband was dying. He had read it also and found it very helpful to understand the process he was going through and he highly recommended it and THAT SAYS SOMETHING! When my Mom was passing I read it and although I was scared to read it, it actually was nothing to fear....it was comforting and enlightening and made the process much easier for me as the caretaker and daughter.I recognized and understood the things she was saying much better and knew how to respond in some unusual circumstances.I recommend this book to ANYONE dealing with the process of dying.I bought extra copies to give to others who are losing someone close to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC
I wanted to do some hospice volunteering but was so worried during the training that I was not "made" for this kind of work as I am a pretty emotional sort but during my training it was suggested that I read Final Gifts to help ease some of my fears. It was the best thing I could have done, though it is never easy to lose a patient it sure opened my eyes to near death awareness and the needs of those leaving this world. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone - one who is losing a loved one - one who would like to work with those dying - or just one with questions of the end of life process. 5-0 out of 5 stars From veterinarian and pathologis
This is with no doubt one of the best book written in the field of histology and pathohistology. I used this book intensively while writing my research thesis. The book is very professional and it is written in a "user friendly" manner. 5-0 out of 5 stars Freida Carson Histology review
I think this is one of the best instructional histology books I have seen. It gives a solid background of the information needed to certify with the board of registry and allows a individual to learn on there own whileworking in the histo laboratory. This book has helped me to grasp all basisin the subject while keeping it interesting and not dull. I stronglysuggest this book along with the instructional workbook for anyone who isstarting out in the field of histology. It will be worth your money. ... Read more

This book is perfect for the scrub who wants to take every case but doesn't have the experience or just needs a brush-up.Even my instructors (both first-assists) recommended this book as a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!!!
This book is excellent for all the new surgical technologists and ST students out there! This book lays it down in simple, almost layman-like terms but is very thorough. Everythng you need to prepare for a case you have never done is in this book. I cannot say enough about how greatly helpful this book is! It has gotten me through alot of stressful situations! If you read this book the night before or right before a case the MD will think you are the greatest thing since sliced bread because it really tells you EVERYTHING you need to know! I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend buying this book. It makes your job SO much easier!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars not as boring as it looks
After The Third Policeman and The Turn of the Screw, I thought this would be a snoozefest, but it was actually very interesting.I'm not sure who left it or why (do I sound paranoid? I don't mean to sound paranoid), but I think the information may prove useful down the road....
4-0 out of 5 stars A good practice book
Quite extensive workbook about hearth arrhythmias. In each case chapter starts with short theory and than examples of charts for the particular arrhythmias and than you get a chance to practice yourself with number of charts, answers in the back with explanations. It is a good practice book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars echocardiography at its finest
As a student echocardiographer learning the pathology of cardiovascular diseases, I have both this edition and one earlier. This is well worth the upgrade in price. It has 1 second loops of most of the many possible pathologies found in echocardiographic studies. Though I have looked at the clips several times, installation was initially a short-lived problem. This new edition is a complete overhaul as described by Feigenbaum. He admits that he is not the sole author but Armstrong and Ryan are the primarys on this edition. This book's attention to clinical detail makes it a must in my book when considering Echo books. Having a resource to give you a moving example of cardio pathology can only enhance one's understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars superb
excellent clinically oriented, very well written and organized text book, supplemented with great clips on DVD. I found it very useful for exam preparation and in clinical practice

4-0 out of 5 stars Great echo book but...
When I was a young man, I read the last edition of this book and I fell in love with Cardiology.Every word in the last edition was memorized, just like a love letter. Now I am an old man, and I was delighted to see a new edition of this book finally published.I spent one weekend digesting every word. While I found the book highly delightful to read,I am finding factual errors in the book, to my disappointment. For example, in chapter 6, page 172, figure 6.51, deceleration time of mitral inflow was drawn incorrectly (it should start from the peak of the E wave, not from the beginning of the E).Then in chapter 16, page 513, the book stated that in dobutamine echo, a hypokinetic area that exhibits "sustained improvement" rather than "bipashic response" should be read as non-viable.But in echo literature (Heart. 2001 Dec;86(6):672-8 and Am J Cardiol. 1999 Jul 15;84(2):130-4), "sustained improvement" is considered viable.
