4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I enjoy the Robicheaux novels, especially the relationship and dynamics between him and Cletus.Burke does a good job of describing the conflict within Robicheaux when it comes to Cletus and his "colorful" lifestyle--just how far should he go to defend Cletus and when should he just let him make the poor choice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage Robicheaux
Another great Robicheaux book by Burke. If you liked the past ones, this is as good as any.

4-0 out of 5 stars Past and Present Collide Explosively in New Iberia
Louisiana has always been a friendly host for those who wanted to run illegal activities, whether slots, cribs or powder. In Pegasus Descending, James Lee Burke takes his distinguished Dave Robicheaux series into a close look at what it's like in Louisiana when the crooks can operate above-ground with their shiny new casinos. As usual, it seems like making things legal just makes it worse for everyone else. What is a poor, but honest, detective in New Iberia to do about it?As usual, Robicheaux will not rest until the creatures of darkness have been brought down.

Editorial Review

Meet Dexter Morgan. He's a highly respected lab technician specializing in blood spatter for the Miami Dade Police Department. He's a handsome, though reluctant, ladies' man. He's polite, says all the right things, and rarely calls attention to himself. He's also a sociopathic serial killer whose "Dark Passenger" drives him to commit the occasional dismemberment. 5-0 out of 5 stars May Dexter Live Here!
Darkly Dreaming Dexter is scary, charming, funny and worth reading...twice! I question my own morality cheering on a serial killer for killing other less appealing characters and rif-raff! He is the answer to the prayers of ordinary people who wish the child molesters, homicidal torture maniacs and serial killers would just disappear off the face of the earth...Dexter is accommidating to those wishes. May he live on but only in fiction. Itzkit
4-0 out of 5 stars A New and Interesting Twist on a Tired Genre
Serial killer books can be so tiring to read now. We've all read Thomas Harris' work, and by now, not much can compare.(Okay, maybe Caleb Carr)At any rate, Lindsay drops in and makes a splash.Dexter is so unique that you can't help but like the guy, despite how he tends to spend some of his free time. The character is fresh and exciting. The plot also moves along at a blistering pace. This is a book you can read on a Sunday afternoon in one sitting.
1-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately I never finished this book
The idea of a blood splatter specialist that works for the police department and that is also a sociopathic serial killer with a known "second personality" is was intrigued me about this book. The idea that someone could have no feeling towards anything or any natural human desires but can still function under the radar of normal civilization was well a killer idea, no pun intended. But in the end this book fell very short for me.I've had this book for quite sometime now and with this being only few hundred pages you'd think a person could get through it in a short amount of time.It still sits on my coffee table waiting to be finished. In fact while it sits there I have read a few other books in between.I now have come to the conclusion I will not finish it at all, thus that is why I'm writing this review now.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Read!
I read this book on the recommendation of another reviewer. It isn't the type of novel I usually read, but I found it a good way to spend a few days, particularly since I wasn't feeling well at the time. I enjoyed the story, the characters, and the imagery, and found the book had plenty of 'realism', even if there wasn't enough for everyone's taste. The story was simple yet powerful, and I felt like Kidd took it as far as it could go. Perhaps it won't be a profound inspiration to all who read it, but it may just make you feel a little better about life. Give it a try.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet!!
At age 4, Lily Owens shot her Ma - you'll find this out soon enough. But that act has set her life on a path of sadness, isolation and misery at the hands of her miserable-excuse-for-a-father, T Ray. By age 14, she decides to run away with her black live-in caretaker, Rosaline. After an ugly encounter with the town racists, Lily and Rosaline run off to parts unknown, guided only by a picture of the Black Madonna that belonged to Lily's mother. The picture leads to the duo to a trio of black beekeeping sisters who take in the runaways while trying to figure out what to do with them.
4-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous prose and inventive story-telling
I waited far, far too long to read this book.Unlike a lot of commerical best-sellers, this book is both a univeral story and a really beautiful piece of workmanship.A bit overly sentimental, but: I laughed and cried and loved with Lily. This book will (or at least should!) be enjoyed by women of all ages for a very long time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner from one of the genre's best
For sixteen years now, Walter Mosley has been producing some of the finest mystery novels the genre has ever seen. That streak continues with his latest, another top-notch novel from one of literature's most gifted observers of race, crime and life on the rough side of America's streets.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fearless faces his fears
In 1956 Watts, Ulysses "Useless" S. Grant IV visits his cousin bookseller Paris Minton with his usual request; he needs his help to extract him out of a potentially lethal but definitely dangerous situation that he insists is a misunderstanding that got out of control. With a personal philosophy to avoid trouble, Paris, who refuses to allow Useless into his home or store, knows he needs to say no because assisting his cousin means you bought into strife you do not need.Still he loves his aunt, Useless' mom, so cannot refuse the creep; needing a hero, he turns to his friend Fearless Jones.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fear Not This Book Is Worth Reading
This was an excellent read. The novel starts with Paris along with his dangerous friend Fearless Jones. Investigates Useless who stores diamonds in his sink. But that just the beginning it seems trouble keeps knocking on Paris Minton door. Until there's a showdown in which when the dust clears. No one is safe. You will enjoyed the different twists and turns. My only problem with novel that there was just too many characters. Some which didn't fit the storyline. ... Read more

On her way home from school on a snowy December day in 1973, 14-year-old Susie Salmon ("like the fish") is lured into a makeshift underground den in a cornfield and brutally raped and murdered, the latest victim of a serial killer--the man she knew as her neighbor, Mr. Harvey. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very different book
This book will grab you from the start. It is not what one expect, very odd and different. The writing is good and holds the reader's mind. Even when you finish you are still think about it weeks later. This is a book you will never forget. It also wants you to know more about the author. I would put this book on my top ten list, which includes book that are off the beaten path that years later you will never forget. Books that draw you in and you feel the happiness, the fear, soddness, pain and that people realy have no clue. If you want all this, then you must read this with a truly open mind, only than can you enjoy it, Like Suzie points out their is different kinds of Heaven and maybe the kind of hell for the villan.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Book!!!!!!!!!
I was giving "The Lovely Bones" from a friend but did not get the chance to read it because I used this book as a gift to someone else facing a loss - and I'll tell you why! Chanel Petro-Nixon (16 years old) vanished last Father's Day after telling her parents she was going to apply for a restaurant job. It seems she never made it to the restaurant. And few days later, Chanel's strangled body was found in a trash bag in front of 212 Kingston Ave.
2-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed the story until...
A book's ending can make or break it.While the majority of this story was fairly decent, it fell apart at the ending.I liked the idea that the young girl was telling her story from heaven.Unfortunately, the author seemed to have been struck with a case of writer's block at the end and asked a stranger to write the ending. That could be the only explanation. Why else would the girl come down from heaven to have sex with some boy, but never come down and reveal her killer? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars one flew over the cuckoos nest
I recently read "One Flew Over THe Cuckoos Nest" by Ken Kesey. "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest" is one of the best books i have ever read. The book is about life inside a phsyciatric hosptal which in this case isn't very nice. The narrator is chief a Native American who is supposedly dumb and deff. The chief is considered a "lifer" meanin the hospital has considered him un helpable. He will have to stay at the hospital for the rest of his life which is unfair. The nurse in charge is Nurse Ratchett who no one dares to challenge. She is an extremely mean person who has no care for the patients and treats them horribly. Everyday they live the same daily routine which they don't like. This doesn't matter though because no one challenges Nurse Ratchett. The turning point of the story is when a new patient is admitted, Mcormick who faked insanity to get out of prison. Mcormick gets much more then he bargained for. The author does a great job of deeply describing the characters leaving nothing out. Reading "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest" i felt like i was there. Mcormick is the best character in the book and one of the best in any book i have ever read. He has a very unique personality which at times is hard to figure out, which makes him very interesting. This book takes you deep into the mind of Chief and the other characters. The best thing about the book is that one minute it's funny and the next it's sad. It's very weird one minute you're cracking up the next your feeling bad for the hardships the patients endure. The patients go through severe mental and physicall abuse. Chief goes through mental abuse especially as no one knows he's not illiterate and def. I would recommend this book to just about anyone it's one of my favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars a top tenever
did you see the movie?no?well ok then ill tell you.this is the book that made ken kesey[hippie extrordinairre] famous and funded his acid tests.anyhow, the movie follows the book quite well which is good.its all about this guy who fakes insanity in order to be released from a work farm and put into the funny farm.only its not so funny there and he decides to rebel.it will take you through a range of emotions from hysteria to balling your eyes out.its a great book everbody should read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Find out why "Nurse Ratched" is part of your vocabulary...
Why does a certain book become a classic? Sometimes being a besteller is the key, sometimes it is awarded prestigious prizes by literary commitees, and sometimes a film adaptation cements its fate. All this is true for "One Flew over a Cuckoo's Nest"; however, the fact that it has contributed a phrase into the common vernacular means it should definitely be required reading.

Editorial Review

Stephanie Plum is so smart, so honest, and so funny that hernarrative charm could drive a documentary on termites. But this tough gal fromNew Jersey, an unemployed discount lingerie buyer, has a much moreinteresting story to tell: She has to say that her Miata has been repossessed andthat she's so poor at the moment that she just drank her last bottle of beerfor breakfast. She has to say that her only chance out of her present rutis her repugnant cousin Vinnie and his bail-bond business. She has to saythat she blackmailed Vinnie into giving her a bail-bond recovery job worth$10,000 (for a murder suspect), even though she doesn't own a gun and has never apprehended a person in her life. And she has to say that the guy shehas to get, Joe Morelli, is the same creep who charmed away her teenage virginity behind the pastry case in the Trenton bakery where she worked after school.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had known...
I don't care how great this book would have turned out to be if I had finished it.Within the first 30 pages, Stephanie recalls the sex she had with the guy she's hunting down when she was 6 and he was 8 years old; and her Grandpa Plum shooting a grossly neglected family pet to end the animal's pain and suffering. If I had known about the distasteful elements in this book, I would never have purchased it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Audio Book Review
Witty and gritty crime story! I listened to the audio version in my car and almost had to pull off the road a few times because I was laughing so hard! This is my first book by JE and it did not disappoint. Stephanie Plum is an entertaining character - very real with a self deprecating sense of humor. Loved the Joe Morelli character and hope to see a little more romance between the two in future books! The audio tapes are narrated by C. H. Critt (a talented female voice actor) and run about 8.5 hours.

1-0 out of 5 stars a plus
I have read all twelve of these books and hoping there will be more. The language is pretty graphic but they are so funny you can usually ignore those words. These books can cause you embaesment, since I read where ever I have to sit and wait and you burst out laughing people do stare and wonder if you are losing it. Please we would all like to see more of these ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars All Mortal Flesh
I have read the entire series of Clare Fergusson/Rus Van Alstyne mysteries and was so looking forward to "All Mortal Flesh" - but this one I did not like.First of all, it was very upsetting finding Linda murdered so brutely. From the other books in the series she is beautiful and likeable and it seemed out of context. Then I was so relieved that she was not dead to only have her dead again. Why? pray tell.Kill her once, not twice. Also, I didn't like the ending. The emotional rollercoaster for Russ was awful, and Clare, why would she join the military again? It didn't make sense.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best yet of this series
So far this is Julia Spencer-Fleming's best book in the Clare Fergusson/Russ Alstyne mystery series. While I've enjoyed the other books in the series, the previous, In the Bleak Midwinter, was IMO the weakest. That's because we spent so much time away from Clare and Russ and became involved with characters I didn't care too much about. Not so the case with All Mortal Flesh. While we move around to other points of view, it's not long before we're back to both Clare or Russ' POV and that's where we want to be. The power of their love and respect for one another, the risks they take to protect that love and their guilt over the consequences are deftly handled in wonderfully drawn moments that often leave me amazed and moved. What's so wonderful about this book is how the external story/plot and internal struggles of the main characters so seamlessly come together. That's no small feat and it's what makes this latest mystery novel the most powerful and meaningful in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was lost, but now I am found.....
...however, I got lost again. Am not going to write a lengthy review as other reviewers have already covered all of the finer aspects of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bond of twins
This book was a double pleasure.Every book by Mary Higgins Clark I have read has always held my attention and was an enjoyable pleasure to read (listen to). This one held a double pleasure for me.It was about twins. No, I'm not a twin but I do believe in the bond that twins have and this story was about that bond.
4-0 out of 5 stars Buzz?
I did not purchase this book because of the "buzz". Actually, I had no idea there was a buzz. I have always been an avid fan of Mary Higgins Clark and have faithfully read all of her books. Some of her books I have not liked, but this one I did truly enjoy. This wasn't a typical Clark novel, no more of the woman in dire need of saving. Twin Telepathy is a mind boggling phenomenon and thats what made this book a hook for me. I believe Clark's way of tapping into the mind of every type of character is what makes her a good writer.
1-0 out of 5 stars My first and last
The characters in this book are shallow and undeveloped.I kept waiting for the characters to be developed or to catch my interest.Never happened.Ms. Clark introduces character after character to keep the story moving but never fully explains their personalities. What a boring read!I predicted the plot long before there really was one.I bought into the buzz about this novel and now wish I hadn't bought the book or the buzz. What a disappointment! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I expected more detectiving
This is another book recommended by a co-worker, who warned me it might not be what I typically read. I really liked the suspense and trying to figure out who the killer was; and I enjoyed the descriptive writing. I dropped two stars for what seemed like exploitive sex and 'creepiness'. I also had a problem with the portrayal of the SAC and some sterotypes that seemed to be placed on him in excess. And finally a few technical errors were disappointing. I would have preferred that some of the pages spent in the bedroom would have been spent describing the clues found or the thought process in arriving at various conclusions. All in all, glad I read it, but it's not a must-read to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
First Book I've read from Sandra Brown and it was really great. It was a page turner from beginning to end. I found the book interesting and easy reading. A well written mystery suspense that keeps you guessing until the very end. Will not be the last Sandra Brown novel for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!
I am glad to know it wasn't just me. I was really disappointed by this book. I have tried to read everyone of Cornwell's books and picked this one up based on past experience. It does not even come close to her usual skills. It may be that it was written for serialization in a magazine. It should not have been allowed out as a book. Her publishers did not do her a favor by letting this go out to the public. It is possible that Win and Sykes could become interesting characters in a well developed book; they were interesting in this book and I liked the setting in Cambridge, but it wasn't enough.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with this book
I have read all of Patricia Cornwell books and love them all. Except this one.I just liked it.It was okay. Not what I've come to expect from one of my favorite authors.I was excited to see that there were new characters and I did enjoy them - as much as there was to know about them. However the whole story did not develop very well, and it left me feeling like I missed a whole bunch of the 'potential' story.I ended the book feeling like Ms. Cornwell was trying to make a statement to someone with this book rather than telling a story.Very disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for new characters!!!
I am so glad that Cornwell decided to give Kay a rest I just can't give this book a low review. It is so refreshing to read about someone new!

1-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was a dream...
I kept waiting for Stephanie to wake up and realize that it was all a dream, but she didn't.What shocked me even more was when I went on to read the 10th book and some of the story from Visions fo Sugarplums carried over.I was already getting a little tired of the far fetched SP stories, but this one went too far.If I could give it 0 stars, I would.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass on this Plum
After listening to Lori Petty and Debra Mazer read the first six novels, Lorelei King was a distinct disappointment. Stephanie is from New Joisey, for crying out loud. Not Nebraska, or wherever the bland Ms. King is from. a major delight of listeneing to the first novels was the wonderfully expressive voices of the readers. They gave attitude to the words. The latest efforts now sound as if they are being read by the local librarian, local if you live in Kansas, that is.
3-0 out of 5 stars Written as a Fantasy
I have read and been entertained by the other Stephanie Plum novels, unfortunately, this storyline was too far fetched for there to be as much enjoyment as in her other novels. If the whole sequence had been presented as a dream, then maybe it would have been OK, but even with all the capers Stephanie pulls off one imagines that she lives in the real world, and we can identify with her.Although the usual characters are there (her family, Lulu) and the usual elements are there (wrecked cars, etc.) the mystical nature of the protagonists remains unexplained and instead of being entranced, I was annoyed by the contrivance. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Another fun read by Evanovich
In Hot Six, Ranger is wanted for murder and Stephanie's cousin Vinnie wants her to track him down. No way could she ever bring Ranger in. Not only is he way smarter than that, but she likes him more than she should. Instead, she tries to help him and on again, off again boyfriend Joe Morelli-cop find the real killer. However, Stephanie does not have the same luck as the men in her life and only seems to run into more trouble with her wild friend Lula-ex prostitute and want to be bounty hunter. Together the two are laugh out loud hilarious.
5-0 out of 5 stars I would rate it 6/5 stars if I could!
Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum certainly didn't expect to have to hunt down this FTA!Nor does she even want to turn him in!This time, she's supposed to be after murder suspect Carlos Manoso, who we all know as her mentor "Ranger".After being stalked by yet another muderer and two thugs, adopting a dog into the family, having her Grandma Mazur as a roommate, and befriending two stoners, Stephanie uncovers the truth about the murder.

2-0 out of 5 stars A pale copy
It seems to me that this author is trying to tell us he is tired of Lucas Davenport.I feel that he wants to transplant the best of Davenport to a new hero.If so, he failed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great weekend reading...Beltway thriller in near future
Surprisingly, I've not read the other Prey novels...how I could not is rather amazing. This book "Dead Watch" had a first printing of 500,000 -- 1/2 million wow. John Sandford as many of you may know is the pseudonym of the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist John Camp. This book is a political thriller -- it appears to be set in the near-future with a group of antagonists called the "WATCHMEN". Topline summary -- Lincoln Bowe a former US Senator has been missing...his Madison Bowe, wife is on the run...she thinks she may be next...Jacob (Jake) Winter's phone rings-- former Army Intelligence dude specializes in what he calls 'forensic bureaucracy-- he's the guy to call when Congress, the Pentago, FBI, CIA Homeland Security etc-- something goes wrong- kind of like a 'ghost-buster' character...The White House is is main cilent...Madison and Jack make a great duo in their quest for the killer (or is Bowe really dead-- you have to read it to discern)....and it's a cat and mouse chase with a snakepit thrown in-between....homosexuality, graft, torture, fraud, spying and more tossed in to the mix...Jack is a one-of-a-kind and Madison is too..so that adds a bit of romance to the quest....just when it seems to get a little slow reading, Sandford pulls out the stops and it takes off...zooming into another dark corner...jetting across the country...and twisting another way...I found it a compelling read...and an easy diversion on a long weekend....and was very intigued by the Watchmen concept/organization....in this day and age of super-security and cameras everywhere...maybe there are watchmen and women...out there anyway...maybe this book hints at more of the truth than we'd like to know -- or they'd like us to know?

5-0 out of 5 stars "Frenetic" Watch
With "Dead Watch", Sanford has delivered a political thriller that is fully worthy of mention alongside his popular police-procedural Prey series.I share the Booklist reviewer's sentiment that Sandford has produced a D.C. intrigue reminiscent of Ross Thomas (a VERY good thing!).

4-0 out of 5 stars A Really Pacy Novel
It may be a little known fact, but James Patterson has written more best selling titles in the past five years than Dan Brown, J.K. Rowling, Tom Clancy and John Grisham put together. He is one of a handful of authors whose sales have been growing over the past two years, even though best selling fiction sales in general have been declining.
2-0 out of 5 stars This serie is getting worse each book...
I enjoyed the first 3 books of the Women's Murder Club. Didn't like too much the 4th (of July), but the 5th is just BAD ! What's the plot ? There is no plot ! 2 serial-killer stories try to share the pages of this not-such-a-page-turner, the 1st mystery (Car Girls) get solved mid-way throught the book and I bet plenty of readers won't remember it by the end of this painfull read... By trying to develop 2 stories, Patterson gets our interest for none. The most sad thing of all is that I used to like to Women's Murder Club members, but now they all seem so unreal, remote from anything actually likeable. And it's been the case since one of them died and another one joined the club, in the most stupid, artificial way really. Not much to save this book, it's even badly written. Don't know if Patterson thinks about writting a 6th, but don't count on me next time !

2-0 out of 5 stars Stinko
I give it two stars only because the two mystery's are decent. This is some of the worst writting I have found in a long time of reading. The dialogue is totally unrealistic and the writing is awful.I don't know how much Patterson had to do with this book but he should be ashamed.I ask youhow many women do you know that use a term like "skirt hound" for a man who chases women?I actually listen to this book as an unabridged audio, thinking it would sound better than it read...silly me!It was even worst because I had to hear the actor read the awful dialogue.Even my wife, who is a big Patterson fan, disliked this one. ...
