5-0 out of 5 stars How WW IImpacted Many Lives
As told through the eyes of a female detective, this story unfolds with a sort of Upstairs-Downstairs, rags to respectability subplot, and provides in graphic history of WW I from a perspective 10 years after the war. It shows how lives were destroyed or altered by this cataclysm. The main character is engaging, the writing is crisp, and the insights into the human condition are profound, and delivered with a light touch.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I loved the beginning of the book but soon realized that, of course I would, since I am all about blue bloods and private libraries..
4-0 out of 5 stars Truly Well Written and Researched
The book is in three parts, the early part is Maisie beginning to work on her own as an investigator, and one of her first jobs leads her on to the third part of the story. In between we learn of Maisie's history and how she came to be in her situation in 1929, at 32 years of age.

5-0 out of 5 stars FIRST RATE THRILLER FROM FIRST TO LAST!
I really don't agree at all with some of these reviewers. Frankly, they all sound like comic book
1-0 out of 5 stars i've tried and failed again
have borrowed 'hawke' three times and tried to read along and finish it, but three times i've failed. this one is no exception. read like comic book with unbelievable characters and plots, and the writing...sorry, mom, i'd rather read mathew riley's video game like books than pick up your junk.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good story, interesting characters, but author needs a better editor
Yes, the story is pretty unbelievable, very much in the same class of the works of Fleming, Cussler, etc. However, it is not the story or the character development that makes this a below average read.......the author really needs to change editors. This book could be improved immeasurably by a better job of good editing.Way too wordy, too many extra pages, scenes, action, etc, that do not add anything of value to the overall story and do much to impede the flow.Did the author get paid by the word? Get a bonus for going over 300 pages?Editing, editing, editing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A DANGEROUS MAN EQUALS A WONDERFUL READ
How anxiously I awaited this final book in the Hank Thompson series. This book DOES NOT disappoint. The writing is great, snappy, fresh, and keeps you guessing. The action never stops, the characters are great, and I love the NO QUOTATION use when it comes to conversation in this book. You MUST read this series and it runs as follows:
5-0 out of 5 stars Great end to the Henry Thompson saga
Wow!A perfect end to the story of one-time baseball prodigy Henry Thompson, who seems to have one bad thing after another happen to him.Through crappy luck his life unravels and he's forced to travel to places in his soul that go against his moral compass.Through all the horrible things that happen (and there are a lot!) he still manages to do some good, all for the love of his friends and parents. His descent into hell is memorable, believable and makes for fantastic reading.I also love the baseball theme that runs throughout the series. My only complaint about this book is Mr. Huston's tendency to write clipped sentences.It. Was. It was just. Sometimes. Sometimesirritating. Just. Just a minor complaint.Otherwise, highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for noir fans.
I don't know what it says about me when I'm rooting enthusiastically and nonstop for the antihero and am almost in tears when the killer dies at the end.Of course, we expect Henry to redeem himself at the end.But he does it unexpectedly, not just by showing Miguel the road out of hell (which Miguel already seems to have found for himself) and by showing Aunt Anna the way out of her personal hell but by the continuing love of his suffering parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sue Grafton has Another Success
I have enjoyed all of Sue Grafton's novels; however, I have not been excited about the last three or four.I thought the earlier ones were much better.
4-0 out of 5 stars Small town secrets
To all Kinsey Millhone fans and to those who are yet to be, this is a most enjoyable read. PI Kinsey Millhone has been hired by a woman to reopen the old case of her mother's disappearance, 35 years before. Violet Sullivan was the local party girl, living in a tiny town with her wife-beating, drunk husband and her young daughter. One day Violet was seen driving around town, showing off her new, flashy convertible, and a few days later, she's nowhere to be found with the locals tossing up as to whether she ran off with a lover or that her no-good husband murdered her and somehow got rid of the body and the car. Kinsey questions the locals who are still living in the town after 35 years and stirs up some resentment and unrest among them as old secrets and rivalries come to life and what is, on the surface a typical small town with quiet, law abiding people, soon reveals itself as a seething mass of jealousies and bitterness. Kinsey narrows her search down to five possible suspects, men who have their own reasons for getting rid of poor, dumb Violet. It was a very good read, quick and not too involved, but holding the readers interest to the very end.

4-0 out of 5 stars Split Time Works
Okay. So Milhone lives in the 1980s. But the cold case she is working on--and that she draws her alternative point of views from--is set in the 1950s. And, boy does Grafton ever nail the 1950s, when TV was just set to burst into our lives, but was still only in the homes of the more monied.

4-0 out of 5 stars " When The Wind Blows" by James Patterson
"When The Wind Blows", by James Patterson, was a great book. The first two chapters caught my attention right away. I couldn't put the book down. I was so surprised by the bird children. I thought it was really cool how they stood together and could fly.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Page Turner
James Patterson has done a number of overlapping novels around the theme of beautiful genetic hybrid children who fly.His books are often page-turners that engage the reader almost against your will. One is inclined to forgive the loose ends of plot development that he leaves lying around. However, the notion that a large group of renegade genetic manipulators could operate in secret and with impunity from law enforcement (not to mention investigative journalists!) as it kills off its opponents and conducts massive man-hunts for seven flying kids, is a little too much of a reach.
5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book from begining to end.
I loved the kids with wings as a family.I especially loved max, frannie, and kit. This story is good and heartfelt. It made me want to fly and punnish the bad scientists. I recomend this book to anyone who loves sci-fi and fantacy awsome book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Tears of the Giraffe
This book is a coin toss.On one side of the coin, you end up with a true feel of Africa, the pace of the people, their thinking process. On the flip side of the coin, it is NOT a fast-paced mystery. It is predominately about the people and VERY, very slow-paced.Too many words. The 'mystery' is thickly buried within .. you have to dig and dig and dig to discover the what the mystery is ... much less the 'solving' of the mystery.Likeable people. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars convoluted
confusing sub plots. When the book was completed the reader still was not sure how all the parts fit together.Cornwells writting has been steadly going down hill.

1-0 out of 5 stars how many trees died to publish this book?
Absolutely horrible.Cornwell wallows in the violence of her sociopathic characters and makes the "good guys" more and more unlikeable.I keep expecting the misogynistic Marino to go postal and start committing serial murders on his own....Maybe that's Cornwell's next plot line. Scarpetta is cold as ice, Benton is too wrapped up in his ego to see through his evil "pet" patient.Lucy falls for a lesbian serial killer. All in all, just another atrocious waste of time.Turn the lights out when you leave folks, I'm outta here!

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money!
I should have listened to the other reviewers--this book is horrible! While the author has written great reads in the past, she seems to have forgotten that, even in this series, people need at least one person they can like--the characters are so awful--as twisted as the people they are supposed to catch, that reading it is totally unsatisfying--it's more fun to root for the "bad" guys than Scarpetta, Marino, Lucy, etc, although, in this case, it's more fun just not to read the book at all!As if that wasn't enough, it was ridiculously hard to follow--it skipped around so much you couldn't figure who was supposed to be where, doing what, with whom!Save your money and try a new author--Cornwell is past her prime with this series! ... Ok, I guess I'm in the minority here, but I like Bill.I've been hoping that Sookie and Bill would get back together, but after this book it's pretty clear that that's not happening.I do like Quinn, but not as much as Bill.As I said, I think I'm in the minority. As for the book it was ok.To me the first two were fabulous, but after that the series took a turn for the worse.Let's hope Sookie sticks with Quinn for more than a couple of pages. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Just Didn't Work for Me
In The Night Gardner, we are introduced to a trio of police officers at the scene of a crime, the third of it's kind...two rookies and one seasoned veteran.Outside of outlining them as determined, seasoned veteran that everyone looks up to (legend), Holiday, cop destined not to be a straight arrow, and Ramone a cop destined to be a straight arrow. The introductory section serves as a brief interlude to introduce the bare facts that the book is based on...the nature of the crimes (pedophilia, dumping bodies in community gardens, and the palindrome thing) and the men who ultimately solve them, sorta.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is MY #1 book
To all of you who downgraded "The Expected One", please take your comments elsewhere! I thought this was an excelent book and would highly recommend to anyone with an open mind. I may be just a simple housewife and mom, but I do have very strong spiritual beliefs. I most certainly belief that Jesus and Mary were married with a family. And that Kathleen's claims in her book are very possible. I dont need physical proof, I have faith. I think it took alot of courage for her to bring forth these claims, and it's people like you that forced her to make her claims a fictional story. Please, have an open mind and heart.

2-0 out of 5 stars Where is the literature?
i enjoyed this book for its ideas but as a literary work- a novel- it didn't move me.i wonder if this book wouldn't have been better if the publishers had left it as a nonfiction work, then readers wouldn't expect the kind of nuance and depth that one hopes for in a novel. For those looking for a more literary, if albeit more radical, treatment of Magdalen, i recommend The Passion of Mary Magdalen by Elizabeth Cunningham instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK-- it isn't Tolstoy, but it isn't terrible either.
Ok-- I'll admit the writing and dialogue are not great, and the characters are flat. But I really enjoyed the take on the gospels and the role of women in the world of Jesus Christ.

Jack Kirkland, former Navy Seal, is the captain of his own salvage boat that he and his crew use to scour for treasure and secrets of the sea. They begin this novel in the Pacific looking for a Japanese shipwreck that is rumored to have gone down full of gold. But their treasure hunting is interrupted by the sea floor opening up with major tremors making the entire region completely unstable.Simultaneously, countries along the Pacific Ocean are affected by these same tremors resulting in horrific earthquakes that cause mass destruction and death, including the crash of Air Force One with the US President on board.
2-0 out of 5 stars A fairy tale
Definitively this book is a very bad fairy tale. For instance: The prologue has three chapters and the only one that matters is the Air Force One's chapter. So you can skip the other two chapters as well as the epilogue.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good story from a great author
I love Jame Rollins's great action/adventure stories. They always contain the right amount of action, mystery and romance to keep the story alive.

Reacher brings in a former military associate, a tall woman who is a master at hand-to-hand combat. The threats turn deadly as two innocent men with the same last name as the VP are murdered, as a warning. There are several more grisly twists. Then the female agent who hired Reacher is shot in the neck while protecting the VP.She dies in Reacher's arm, mistaking him for his long dead brother, professing her love for his brother. Now Reacher is on a mission. He and his associate go all out to find the assassins.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very little action, and other problems
You have to read about 180 pages of this book before any action starts. I was frankly bored by the entire book. Once the action starts, it's fairly contrived. Reacher is one of those very lucky or very unlucky "heros." And if you're one of those readers who like to try to figure out who is doing the dirty deeds, you can't. There are absolutely no clues you can use to determine the perpetrators.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming and Interesting
I finished all of McCall-Smith's "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" novels and they were so entrancing that I had to try his "DalhousieMysteries." At first I was put off, since they are so different in tone than the African novels, but by the end of the first chapter I was hooked in a completely different way than I was with Precious Ramotswe. The plot of the story has been divulged in other reviews, so I will not belabor it. The real depth, I believe, comes from the"mmhmm" moments. As a woman entering middle age I found myself nodding when Isabel mused about the way youth defines a woman's desirability and she can do little more than watch it ebb away as she ages, even if she remains attractive. Isabel's chronic self-reproachment as she considers her words and actions against ideals she cannot live up to was too close to comfort for me. I realized that I think many of the same things she does as she goes through her day -- "was I too bold?" "Should I have held my tongue?" "Does anyone even know I'm here?" Her affection and feelings of longing for a man about 15 years her junior is conveyed in a very stoic, tight-upper-lip sort of way, and it makes Isabel even more sympathetic to the reader. Isabel does not do so much navel gazing that it irritates, however. She is a philosopher, after all, so she has the tendency to practice more mindfulness than the rest of us, but she also throws off the rational philosophy and follows her heart at times, shaking things up a bit. All the characters in the novel are believeable and interesting. I would recommend this novel, a hot cup of chai, and a cozy couch to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Substance behind the fluff
Like his other series The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, these books seem to be of the "light mystery" variety with intriguing and believable characters.Isabel Dalhousie, the heroine of the series, is a fallible protagonist--a refreshing change from so many heroines.McCall Smith successfully narrates a woman's perspective by treating it more as a generalized "human" perspective.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Older Woman's Heroine
If you have a philosophical approach to life than you will love Isabel, the heroine of this novel. This book is not for those who like a lot of terror and blood/guts in a mystery. It has more to do with an outlook on life, and a great feel for the atmosphere of Scotland. Can't wait to read the others in this series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fford is Ffresh, Ffun and Ffulfilling
Thursday Next is the British Kinsey Millhone (Sue Grafton). Both are clever, gun-toting, crime solving heroines straight from 1985.Jasper Fford must giggle outloud when he writes about evil characters like Jack Schitt and Acheron Hades. With names that these, how can this book be anything less than a wild rhumpus of a literary ride.An Eyre Affair is the first book I've read in this series and I can't wait to read the rest!

3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting romp.
Fforde certainly conjeurs up some interesting scenarios. Fun and easy reading, one to take to the beach. However I don't think I'll be reading any of the sequels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sheer genius on a stick
Thursday Next rocks. There is English Classical Literature. There are delightful puns on poem and novel titles. There is time travel. There is gunfire and violence. There is a red sports car. There is more snark than you can shake a very sarcastic stick at. There are various devices and abilities allowing characters to actually enter books and have vastly entertaining conversation with various famous literary characters. If you enjoy the witty banter of Joss Whedon, the impeccably polite sarcasm of Austen, the deadpan quips of Dickens, you will love Thursday. She is my hero. Jasper Fforde is a genius for inventing her and the alternate universe in which her adventures take place. I save his books for after particularly grueling or involved reads, when I need something fun and light-hearted to make me feel less depressed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good story, needs editing
Sunny's life does move along. Richie's new wife is pregnant. Sunny decides that this means it's over with Richie (a good decision. I hope it sticks.). In the course of investigating a murder for Erin Flint, a gorgeous but untalented movie star, she meets Jesse Stone, Police Chief of Paradise, MA, who is the hero of his very own series and who has his own ghosts to slay. To wit, his ex-wife, Jenn, is once again cheating on him. Sunny and Jesse solve the basically routine and predictable case and start a relationship of their very own. So far, so good.
1-0 out of 5 stars PLEASE...don't waste your time
I bought this book because of the 4 star rating by readers.Let me be candid....what the hell were they reading? This book is simply insipid, implausible and a waste of time.Get this for a premise....rich, geeky guy buys a major league baseball team called the "Connecticut Nutmegs"!Nutmegs for a major league team??!!Yeah, right. It gets better....he has an incredibly sexy girl friend who stars in the C-list movies he produces....ok hold on to your seats, here comes the good part....she is going to be his star player on this MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL team!!Why, because in college she was an excellent athlete. So some buxom starlet who ran track in college is going to play major league baseball!!Am I the only one who thinks this is plain stupid.Oh, yeah there's a murder along the way.Parker (author) must have pictures of the publisher having sex with a goat otherwise I can't think of a reason why it got published.

4-0 out of 5 stars Because we root for the characters, not due to the plot...
Some novels are worth reading because of the mystery, or the suspense, and a sexy love story between the main characters is just a sidebar. "Blue Screen" is the opposite. If you already like Parker's non-Spenser heroes Jesse Stone and Sunny Randall, then you cannot help but root for their newborn romance in this book. The mystery is not all that compelling, revolving around who killed a "B" movie star's sister near Boston and a couple of film financial wonks out in L.A. Most of the supporting characters who are killed, or who might be killers, are non-sympathetic. Sunny and Jesse are never in any real personal jeopardy in any chapter. However, they are horny, and hurt, and uncertain about taking up the risks involved with new relationships. So, if you like solving murder mysteries with twists or dangers to the protagonists, this one's not for you. If you, however, are in the mood to travel along for a few weeks with a couple of the good guys, and to observe them tentatively finding new happiness while emerging from destructive divorces, this will be pleasing. Over the past five years or so, the novels featuring Sunny, a private investigator, or Jesse, aresort town police chief, have been more satisying than the adventures of Parker's main meal ticket, the Boston P.I. Spenser. "Blue Screen" merges, at least temporily, these interesting characters, and to me, that was a smart move on Mr. Parker's part. One cautionary note: Parker seems to be obsessed with the "F" word in this effort, and while it is used more often as a synonym for intercourse than as an angry exclamation, it appears about twice as frequently as it needed to. If you don't like seeing that word in print on every other page, you might want to skip this book. ... Read more
