4-0 out of 5 stars Less About Baker Himself, Of Course, Than American Politics
I did not know a great deal about James Baker before I read this book, but I mean it as a compliment to the clarity of his reminiscences when I say I think I do now. In the field of political autobiography, it is not always the case that one emerges knowing more about the author and subject than when one began. From the pages of his book I discern that James Baker is not without wit, albeit at times a distinctly biting one. He is also less a statesman than a politician, and less a politician than a man with protective loyalty to his friends. He is perhaps above all someone with a talent for inserting himself into a situation and calling on a lifetime's worth of well-placed contacts when there is a need to get things done. In short, to his party and to its inner circle, Mr. Baker is invaluable.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Memoir filled with Credability.
In reflecting upon the life of James Baker through his second memoir 'Work Hard, Study . . . and Keep Out of Politics!' the one thing that continued to stay in my mind is Baker's openess that one of the reasons why he stayed in politics was 'power'.What a refreshing statement: the Truth! This is not so minimal a statement when reading the many self-serving political memoirs published, particularly from the Reagan-era politicians who have published throughtout the years. The life of Jame Baker is quite remarkable, and the sharing of his life and decisions as shared in this memoir are encompassing of service to this nation well done.I may not necessarily agree with all the decisions made by Baker during the years he served 3 different presidents, but I do respect the man and the integrity of this book. There rings certain truths throughout, and his openess about 'power' provide a sense of credability to his perspectives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A classic!
I can't add much to what is already written here. But I must say, these teaching approaches work. The authors back up every method with careful research.Best of all, the methods are described specifically.
1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy if you need a hardcopy!
I don't have an opinion on the book itself, it's a requirement for a class. However, I thought although there were restrictions (understandable copyright issues) on printing, I could have the inexpensive ebook, and print a hardcopy to take to the class. If you have printer issues (and you will) you will be penalized for those copies, whether they are printed, readable, or not. Subsequent downloads to override posed a different kind of printer issue, as it began printing pages 'backwards'...so I'm still out my pages. I'll have to buy the hardcopy anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the keys are here
If someone gave you a book that had the keys to learning in it, would you read it?You are a good teacher, so of course you would, and it is this book. Many books out there are some research, some theory--this book is all research-based strategies that are proven to work in a classroom, so there is no guessing if these are effective methods or not.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best study guide, but still needs supplement
I took the GRE last week after studying for months. I'm really happy to report I got 700's on both the verbal and quantitative sections! I initially bought just the Princeton Review book, but found it was lacking in practice questions. This book had plenty of questions, and had very thorough vocabulary and math sections.

Having to take the GRE is nerve wrecking enough. This book at least gives some comfort in that it provides you with structure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid foundation for the MCAT
Ek bio - this is the STUFF!! I pwned the BS MCAT by reading this book 3 times and difficult topics 2-3 more times. Was able to teach myself microbiology and human physiology with this book. you don't need advance classes like genetics, cell bio, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Manageable study program
After being away from college for 10 years, I have found the MCAT review very comprehensive and manageable. The subjects are divided into separate books, which makes them very portable. The diagrams are fantastic, and the authors' sidenotes clarify what you need to know outright versus what's background info.If you need further help, there are Examcrackers resources for that too, such as flashcards and extra questions for each subject, so you don't have to pay for what you don't need.It is somewhat tailored for those with strong science skills, and weak verbal--the Verbal Reasoning book really walks you through the basics.Since that is my strong suit, I don't need my hand held for that, while I do for Physics, so I guess my only complaint would be that they assume you're a science wizard and verbal dummy, so those of us with the opposite skills don't get the same benefit of that stereotype.I know, probably most medical students fit that mold, but that doesn't mean those of us who have to work a tad harder don't belong in the profession--once you know it, you know it.There's room for all types, as well as a need!Good program overall, I'm very pleased, and would recommend to anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book and a lot of material
This book is worth the price! It gives you a lot of material to work with. I studied these the second time I took the MCAT for a period of 4-5 weeks. After which I took my old Princeton exams, I aced them without even touching my old Princeton notes. While admissionsmystery .combook is great/insightful for AMCAS application strategy, I think these set of books are great for the MCAT. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding biography of an outstanding American leader
Washington Post reporter Karen DeYoung clearly finds the mark in her most auspicious biography of, in my opinion, America's finest leader in recent memory.Colin Powell truly is a great American and merits such a treatment of his life's story.I had the good fortune of speaking with him at some length one time on the telephone and found him to be a leader among leaders, in charge without being dictatorial, and utterly "cool."I trust that he will continue to inspire budding leaders of like integrity and ability to step forward and serve.
5-0 out of 5 stars AMERICAN HERO: THE MEASURE OF A GREAT SOLDIER!!
Five MAXIMIZED Stars !! This biography by Karen DeYoung, associate editor of the Washington Post, is a monumental work of excellence, detailing the life and times of Colin Powell from his humble beginnings through his tenure as Secretary of State under President George H. W. Bush to his current endeavors. While the 1996 Colin Powell autobiography, "My American Journey", was excellent in examining his life and "his good stories", it misses the tumultous and controversial decade that followed. DeYoung's book paints on a larger canvas from an outsider's viewpoint with a huge number of sources. At times she juxtaposes activities at different points on the globe between Gen Powell and his wife Alma. Many other times she sculpts Powell in bold relief in some of the major events of US and world history, among an almost unbelievable cast of characters that can only be described as 'awe-inspiring'.All of this is captured in stunning prose and laid out in impressive detail, with ultimately an investigative flair that rivals any of the current 'political tell-all' books, although that is not the objective here. A totally absorbing read of over 600 pages!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book and read, just wish there was something more.
I bought this book to fill in the gap from his previous book, My American Journey.A good chunk of Soldier deals with the Iraq war and perhaps rightly so, as his UN presentation continues to haunt him. While I can appreciate all he had to go through, it's still hard to swallow some of his reasoning for doing that presentation as well as the defense of the Bush administration afterwards.I was hoping he would apologize candidly to the American people for misleading them.He adamantly refuses to do so and I wonder if he realizes this refusal puts him on par with the Bush administration refusing to acknowledge how bad things have become in Iraq, as well the false justification for this war.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
This tape series is wonderful! I had a few years of high school spanish but was very rusty.I used these tapes to brush up.After listening to them over and over, I am able to speak pretty fluently with clients at work. The 2 speakers on the tape are enjoyable and professional in the way they interact.I feel like I know them personally, by now! It is nice to hear a native speaker as well as an american born person say the words and phrases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Spanish Made Fun and Easy, and most of all, Affordable
This is one of my favorite Spanish courses. I have learned lots of Spanish from it. But what's most important about this course is that Mark Frobose uses a method that not only teaches you Spanish but also helps you retain it. I recommend this course to any that is looking to learn Spanish fast but is not looking to spend lots of money to learn it.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTICO !
I have several others CD's that I do not use b/c they are boring. However, when I saw the reviews on this I decided to take a chance. It is wonderful.Head & shoulders above the others I have.Really an excellent supplement to my spanish language lessons (or it would be very fine by itself I think).

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't wait to read it!
I'm a big fan of Alain de Botton's writing, so when I saw that his newest book, "The Architecture of Happiness" would not be released in the US until October 2006, I ordered it directly from Amazon.uk. I read it in two or three days and was not disappointed. Botton has a great way of connecting the writings and thoughts of the great minds of world civilization to everyday human experiences. In this case, to the kinds of buildings (public and private) we build or aspire to build, or conversely, tolerate and settle for. The book is amply illustrated. As nice as these photographs and illustrations are, Botton's writing is so precise and illustrative in its own right that the illustrations are not always necessary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Erudite, colorful, delightful!
[Notabene: this is a review of the Dutch translation of this book.] I have read only one book by Alain de Botton so far, namely his eminently readable but highly imaginative and evocative 'The Art of Travel'. I was so enamoured by that particular book, that I highly anticipated his 'The Architecture of Happiness', and bought it without any doubts as what to expect (and so should anyone else who loved his 'The Art of Travel, I believe ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for LSAT prep
I am not aware of any other books that deal exclusively with the logical reasoning section of the LSAT. But it doesn't matter. This book is so comprehensive I'm not sure what the other books could include that this book has not.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great study aid
This was a great study aid, I'm about half way through but I've already ordered the logic games bible because I'm so impressed. PS does a great job of explaining each question type and provides great hints on how to attack each question. My only suggestion for improvement is to add more lsat question examples, but since sample tests from LSAC are only $8 each you can always supplement your study that way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great LSAT Prep
This book seperates all LSAT Logical Reasoning Questions into 18 different types. They tell you what the question stem for each type looks like so you can identify it quickly and effectively use their Powerscore strategy. The book also uses REAL LSAT questions, which most other test-prep books does (which accounts for the high price - just a tidbit of advice, buy it well in advance of the October LSAT, the prices increases about 15 dollars in July).

5-0 out of 5 stars POWERFUL. Great insight, well documented, very disturbing

5-0 out of 5 stars The Comparisons are Glaring
This book obliterates simplistic, politically correct views about Islam. The word-for-word comparisons between the teachings of Muhammed and the teachings of Christianity, Buddhism, and other religions, are stunning.Take, for example, the famous story of Jesus' intervention when a crowd was about to stone an adulterous woman. His words, to let the person "who is without sin cast the first stone", sent the mob retreating in shame. He then told the woman to, "Go and sin no more."As the autor quotes from the Quran, Muhammed was confronted with a similar situation.A pregnant adulterous woman had come to him requesting that he pray with her for forgiveness. He sent her away until the baby was born. When she came back months later, he sent her away until the child was weened. When she came back as directed, he took the child and gave it to one of his men as a gift.Muhammed then ordered the mother buried up to her shoulders and stoned to death. It really is time for media pundits, college professors, and self-serving politicos to stop making shallow moral equivalence statements about Islam, the Quran, and the Crusades. This book needs to be read and studied by those who now are in a position to give away our birthright. It took the ancient Greeks, the Judeo-Christian tradition, the Magna Carta, the U.S. Constitution, and hundreds of years of Western Civilization to produce the most beneficent and free society in history. Here, Muslims and others can practice their beliefs without fear.We must insist that spokesmen and apologists for Islam demand that this "religion of peace" grant its neighbors the same rights the Western democracies have gladly given to them.Read the book. Its an eye-opener.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good information ruined by biased commentary
This is an interesting book in that it does have valuable information regarding Islam and misconceptions regarding Islam.

5-0 out of 5 stars you shall love your neighbor as yourself
Danforth follows the teachings of Jesus in this moderate and sensible discussion of the extremes theocons go to in following an badly distorted religion that has little to do with NT Christianity.Danforth makes the point much less emphatically than that, always willing to give evangelicals more than the benefit of the doubt. Nevertheless, the gun-totin' execution-advocatin'tax-hatin' theocons bear no resemblance to the Jesus of the bible who advised against using weapons, stopped an execution, and in Lukehas only hard words for the rich and those who pursue wealth.
4-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Democrat Doing the Same?
In terms of extreme partisanship, Danforth has nailed the problems with the modern Republican Party on the head. The greatest confusion on this issue, however, rests in the assumption that the most vociferous opponents of the Republicans are somehow different. They are fanatical too, and in a profoundly quasi-religious way. Righteousness is now at the core of both party bases.
1-0 out of 5 stars Politics and Faithyness
In 1909, G.K. Chesterton recognized the danger of Episcopalianism ceasing to be a religion without ceasing to be a church.Mr. Danforth, who publicly dons the mantle of credibility as a former Episcopalian clergyman, seems to be a perfect example of this unfortunate decline. The kernel is gone but he clings to the shell.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ideological leanings way too obvious; not a good characteristic for an educational text
I was assigned this textbook for my high school Sociology class that I took as an elective in the last semester of my Senior year.I had gone into the class expecting an intriguing, thought-provoking subject that led students to ask the big questions about why people and society are the way they are, and that the textbook would help guide me along the way.Unfortunately, I was pretty dissapointed, to say the least.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and informative
I have to admit, I hate the soft sciences, but I had to take Sociology 101 for a requirement.Thank goodness this was the textbook assigned to the course!Everything is perfectly clear and it's actually really fun to read.Even if you're not taking a course, I'd recommend this book to anyone who would like to call themselves knowledgable. It is a fun read, and you'll come out so much more informed in the end - painlessly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, easy to Learn
The set up of this book make it really easy to read. The print is a reasonable size for people with poor eyesight and this makes it quicker to read.To really know and understand, you will need to read several times but this will be worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars positive thinking
I really loved this book. It made me really look at my life and the way i was attracting negative vibes into my life without really wanting to. It helped me turn things around as far as my way of thinking and my life has been so much better. It has even helped me with my stress. I want all my friends to read it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read Abraham-Hicks instead
I can't say this book is all bad. It would be suitable for someone who is not at all familiar with the "Law of Attraction" principal. Perhaps you might present it to someone who has neverheard of these concepts. However...

1-0 out of 5 stars You're kidding me, right?
Not insightful, not even humorous. I am willing to admit that maybe I just don't get his writing style, whatever that might be. I hope Mr. Rakoff gets into a new line of work

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Written, but Non-Productive
This is some brilliant writing. It moves right along, it keeps you interested, and it has a very clear voice and strong point of view.I defintely think it's worth reading, but it's like a bucket of KFC -- delicious, satisfying, but probably bad for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars ShoppersParadise
If you're like a man like me, you hate to shop. But my wife is a shopaholic, that's why I've found this book to be so delightful, I didn't actually have to leave the house, to go shopping. Too bad it doesn't really count with my wife, I'm going to the mall where I'll sit on anything stationary this afternoon

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on interest rate models
This is the best book available on interest rate models. Very detailed. Much more focused and readable than Rebonato's book. More pragmatic and explicit than Musiela and Rutkowski. Not as theoretical as Hunt and Kennedy. James and Webber also looks very good, but I'm not that familiar with it. All other books have only bits and pieces on interest rates.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have read on the subject
With all the due respect to the other authors I would say that if one is interested in a good theoretical book whihc is also good on the implementation side then the book of Brigo and Mercurion is definetly the best book I have ever read on the subject. 5-0 out of 5 stars New stuff and nice overview: hard to beat!
In the late nineties I went through Brigo's innovative work on stochastic nonlinear filtering with differential geometry techniques. I was favorably impressed by results and style, particularly in his dissertation and in his 'geometry in present day science' very readable overview. Interesting results are found and nicely told with accurate -but not pointlessly complicated - advanced mathematics for the problems at hand, I reasoned. Read more
