BEST RESOURCE FOR GED SUCCESS!!!
I am a vocational counselor helping adults return to school to learn a new career. Most have been out of school for 10-30 years. This tool helps them recover years of ability lost to non-use, but most especially to score much higher on their entrance exams to the colleges, which greatly reduce the number of remedial classes they have to take to bring their skills up enough to enter a degree program. In addition, those that dropped out of High School have been able to get their GED within as little as a week, or the time it takes to get scheduled into the local testing center (usually at your local Community College). It has been the single most important resource for nearly every student I have, and has proven its worth time and time again. You cannot lose with this one!

As a teacher, I appreciate this very effective tool in helping students feel successful. Very well planned, this book maximizes their chances to get through all the material and pass the GED exam.

A review on Andragogy and learning theories
The Adult Learner by Malcolm Knowles is a comprehensive and informative book covering various aspects and theories on learning beginning with the roots of andragogy. The reading then progresses through adult learning in human resource development to elaborating how andragogy is applied in practice. Lastly, strategies are introduced to tailor learning to individual differences and to be able to implement adult learning in organizations. I specifically found useful the new perspectives on adragogy that has emerged from research and theory in a variety of disciplines from the learner's need to know working your way through the core principles to motivation to learn. Even though this is definitely a worthy read because of the comprehensiveness of the content it would be more suitable for a reader that already has had some what of a foundation within the adult learning realm.

This book was in excellent shape.I received it sooner than I expected.

A classic, but it does not use its own advice.
Malcolm S. Knowles is the founder of the theory of Andragogy (Adult Education), and I agree with him on many of the points he makes.

I'd give it zero stars if I could
I understand that the typical Psychology Book is not exactly a riveting novel, but good god, this was way too much.I have never been more annoyed with a text book- I would never voluntarily have read this garbage!She would have had a much shorter book if we weren't forcefed her life story at every possible chance she could insert it in.This woman is very full of herself...very full.There were a lot of typos, a lot of redundent sentences, and a lot of crap we didn't need!I hope for the rest of the psychology students of the world that this author reads these reviews and vows never to write another text book again.If I ever have a class that requires another text book by her, I will drop without hesitation!And change majors the next morning!

HORRABLE
In my 4 years as an undergraduate i have never read such a poorly written book. She has more typo's then I have including multiple references to the NEO-PR (NEO-PI-R). She incorrectly summarizes groundbreaking research (i.e. Ceci, Rosenblum, & Debruyn, 1999). Her feminist agenda flows freely all over this book along with usless stories about her self that dont add to the text. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CLASS. You and your students will regret it.

Increasing understanding of Aging
Hellen Bee is able to carry one through the years of adulthood through many avenues. Using scientific studies she interprets the data in meaningful ways. Inclusion of personal accounts and her conversational style make the reading interesting. The book continually ties previous ideas to new concepts giving a nice continuity. I especially enjoyed her occasional insertions of the not-so-scientific spiritual aspects of the adult experience, which I was not expecting in a textbook. My ideas of what it means to grow old were challenged and changed during the reading of this book. Some myths of adulthood are adeptly smashed making the thought of aging not such a frightful one. The only criticism I would include is that occasionally the point being made was not clear to me and a few conclusions seem to have contradictory statements in following chapters. This book grew on me (slightly)...
This book was an assigned text for a seminary class, which is the only reason that I read it.I have a degree in secondary education, so I spent considerable time during college studying these types of concepts, though the terminology in this book was new to me.I began this book with a chip on my shoulder about the psychobabble that seems to dominate many discussions about pedagogy, and she certainly reinforced several of those irritations.For instance, she spent considerable time describing the futility of lecture.I realize that lecture has significant limitations, but I think it is a silly overgeneralization to disregard its potential entirely.

Quick delivery and very indepth book...
I was suppose to get this book anywhere between the 11th - 14th, but I got it on the 10th of that month! I got it earlier than I thought. This being early pleased me very much, but when I opened the box to get the book out I was even more impressed by the size of the book. Even further I was flipping through this book and again, I was impressed by the indepth topics. I like it very much. Although this book is not for me but instead for my mother. She is 46 and I am in my Senior year in high school. She wanted to get her GED before I left so that she would have a chance to do it. So I got on Amazon and boom! I had a good book for my mom, we start her lessons next week! LOL I get to be TEACHER!

A great help for a low price!
A great help for a low price! Two of my family members used this book (don't worry, each got their own copy - they're starting college this fall!) to brush up before taking and PASSING their GED tests. Mission accomplished! The format is easy to follow and the information is just what you need. It emphasizes finding your weaknesses so you can strengthen them. I recommend it for homeschoolers needing a great way to prove they have a high school education and anyone needing to finish their high school education.

Quantum Change
Jane Vella's, Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach: The Power of Dialogue in Educating Adults challenged me to intentionally adopt several principles in my ministry to university students. I'm convinced these principles are useful for church ministries as well. That is why I recommend this book to you.

A Dream to Keep Alive
Though Ladon-Billings leans towards idealism constructing a perfect model of societal bliss, this book does show the underlying lack of knowledge many people have regarding educational issues. Those who say that the African-Americans' educational problems are their own fault show incredible short-sightedness to the truth of history. Have we forgotten that the Africa diaspora of colonialism was a forced migration to this country that treated blacks as inferior, and thus that it was a waste of time to educate them? In order for racism to stop, people have to recognize that there is no one race better than any other. All races have value and thus all races should be celebrated. God created them all. An understanding of this will lead to advances in the educational system which often has curricula that have no connection to many of its students. Ladson-Billings book, though primarily focused on African-Americans, is still an important blueprint toward removing some of the blinders people wear when it comes to historical truth. This book is for those who have ears to hear.

The education problem is never a one race or one minority problem
Author Ladson-Billings (1994) book "The Dreamkeepers", gave me valuable inside on examples of various challenging and rigorous classrooms, and the emphasis the author put in presenting the cultural and social aspects of schooling when framing education as a whole, was evident. However the author makes the problems of African American children the main issue at stake in her book. Therefore I was presented with a fact and a different point of view based on statistics while conducting my research: One cannot lobby to change the system for one type of minority, to be successful at change. One has to see the "spreading tumor' per se, as a culturally diverse illness, affecting all of us. We, as a diverse society cannot try to make only one minority the beneficiary of our input, improvement, and educational reform. According the U.S. Department of Education (2004) NCLB (No child left behind) report, it showed that among the reading and math proficiency levels of performance for 4th graders in 2003, African American children were slightly lower, by one to five percent, under performing the Hispanics, meaning Hispanics proficiencies in reading and math are slightly better, just slightly, but this does not justify viewing the problem of minority children as being only an African American one. To be successful at change, one has to be more objective and start change for all minorities, why is it so vital to start with only one? I know poverty and lack of social skills are a major factor, but imagine how difficult it is to learn with a new language too.
a useful book
The Dreamkeepers isn't a necessarily groundbreaking book, but i think white teachers (or any teachers for that matter) who haven't had much experience working with african american children will find the book helpful.If you've read any other stuff that falls under anti-racist or critical pedagogy, there won't be much that is new in terms of concepts.But what i found most useful are her sketches of the eight or so teachers who are very successful with african american children.She talks about their their upbringing, how that has influenced their teaching practices, and why they are successful in the classroom. ... Excellent practical advice for the college teacher
Professor Bean provides the theory behind his recommendations but, as any teacher who has delved into this literature knows, theories about effective teaching aren't in themselves necessarily very helpful.What one needs is practical advice, and this book has it---lots of it.Bean identifies different writing activities for students; shows how to design tasks for active thinking and learning in the classroom; suggests effective ways to make use of small group discussion in the classroom; explains ways to increase active learning in a lecture course; discusses the mechanics of grading papers; and shows how to enhance learning in essay exams.Even for the experienced teacher, there's a good deal of worthwhile material here, and it's cogently presented.A highly recommended book for the professor who wants to increase active learning in the classroom and get more out of a lecture course.

John C. Bean presents a thorough, logical discussion covering issues that (may seem basic) but that I for one, still struggle with - successfully integrating critical thinking writing assignments into my courses. insightful, thoughtful, and full of useful classroom tools

Excellent book on education and social change
Just wanted to say ditto to the previous reviewers. Highly readable, engaging dialogue between the two great minds, a great introduction to their lives and thought. I give this book to friends as a gift probably half a dozen times a year it is that good. Trust me. Buy it. Read it. Go out and transform this world into one less ugly.

An amazing book!
I agree with the last reader that this is one of the best books I have ever read.Horton (may he rest in peace) and Freire have been on the front lines of using education for social progress and change.They discusstheir philosophies and principles about education, illustrated by powerfulstories of their work over the years, in an informal, conversational style. It has made me totally rethink the way I approach teaching adult ESLstudents.

A good review of practice
This book takes the approach of viewing critical thinking as reflective thinking starting off with a recognition of the narrative elements considered axiomatic by the adult being taught to think critically. There is no first emphasis on thinking correctly, so it is to be assumed that logical skills are already something the adult student has learned. Since it has been my experience over 10 years teaching adults and late adolescents that our school systems in general do not prepare people to think correctly (that is Logic 101) this should be a first issue in a text meant to be used in a Logic and Reasoning course in college. As a result I would not recommend this text as a requirement for a Logic and Reasoning course or as an Introduction to Logic course but perhaps as a book for a course like Truth, Beauty, and Goodness where it might do well as the first book dealing with the nature of truth.

Marcia Tate practices what she preaches!
The reason I bought this book, and all her others, is because I was lucky enough to be in her 2-day seminar.She DOES practice what she preaches!In her book, she uses 20 research-based, brain-compatible strategies to motivate and engage learners, enabling them to reach higher test scores. During her seminar, she usedthese same 20 strategies with us and they worked!We actively listened and learned, because she didn't expect us to "sit and get".We were moving, talking, playing games, writing, drawing, etc...using those 20 brain-friendly strategies.I am now using these 20 strategies in my classroom.My math class all tested 100% on their first unit tests!I will use Marcia Tates books and strategies forever! ... Excellent, and nothing quite like it
This book is smart.It is practical and helpful.Besides offering many great ideas on writing coherant paragraphs, it becomes an excellent aid to brainstorming.My only gripe is that there is no bibliography for reference and further study, and no references to recommended paragraphs by other writers.Still, I know of no book quite like this.I'm glad I bought it.

A 'must-read' for all adult educators
Being fairly new to the community of adult educators, I find myself continually searching for works that might help me to become a more effective facilitator. In this regard, Galbraith has quickly evolved into one of my favorite authors/editors in the field of adult learning.I found this book to be very practitioner-oriented, scholarly yet not over-technical and well researched. I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to develop a greater understanding of adult learners and instructional strategies that are, indeed, effective.

An anthology of useful essays
Now in its third edition with revisions, updates, and six new chapters, Adult Learning Methods: A Guide For Effective Instruction compiled and edited by Michael W. Galbraith is an anthology of useful essays by experienced educators and filled from cover to cover with tips, tricks, and techniques for instructors in adult learning classrooms. General enough to apply to all walks of adult instruction ranging from literacy to apprenticeship to community college to advanced schooling, the contributory essays comprising Adult Learning Methods focus especially on assimilating general principles and tested techniques to facilitate learning and is very highly recommended reading for anyone charged with the task of educating adults.

An Excellent Book for Teachers of Adult Education
Michael Galbraith has done an outstanding job of compiling written work by several noted authors and making it available in one book. Rita Kolody focuses on Guidelines for Selecting Methods and Techniques. Gary Conti haswritten an excellent chapter on Identifying Your Teaching Style. StephenBrookfield's focus in on Discussion. Shirley Farrah spotlights the Lecture.Internship is covered by Susan B. Fremont and Mentorship is covered byLaurnet A. Parks Daloz. Many other authors have contributed equallyoutstanding chapters. A major theme of this book is understanding theadult learner.Psychological characteristics are explored as well ascognitive and personality characteristics of the adult learner. Thechapters are well written, easily understood, and references aredocumented. Theory Good - Practical Not
Theoretically complete, but doesn't help practically. You can learn about adult learners, but how to develop an actual program... I don't know, it's not enough!

Excellent Source of Knowledge
This book is a great read for anyone who is interested in the programming aspect of any type of organization or educational setting. The author explains the somewhat complex programming process in a simplistic manner that novel and experienced program planners can comprehend. There are numerous workesheets and tips to guide you to presenting a great program. It is trull an excellent source of knowledge.

Perfect Crash Course on Web-Based Training
If you are new to web-based training, stepping into a new web-based instructional design position, have been teaching or developing web-based training but suspect that there is a better way to do it, or you simply want to establish a solid foundation in building engaging online learning envrionments, this book must be on your shelf.I am a higher education instructional design consultant and I find this book to be an excellent ongoing resource.Not only is it full of specific and practical tips, but the content is organized into dozens of useful tables and charts.Chapter 6, "Activate Learning" is an especially useful chapter, providing lists of potential learning activities and explaining some of the reasons to choose one learning activity over another.
Long on tips. Weak on theory.
This book contains a collection of web design tips which are in the main useful but not earth shattering.Where the book fell down, for me at least, was in the area of theory. It is weak here, and that can be a major problem if you want to conduct a scientific evaluation of the work using the umpteen heuristics suggested by the author.I doubt that there is enough information in the text to adequately help one frame an evaluation of a course, let alone put one together.
