A mixed blessing
This is the most useful Training book I've come across in a long time.I find myself referring to it often.However, it is in desperate need of editing.It could easily be cut down by 1/3 - and that would make it much better.

Did anyone edit this book?
It is tragic to find wonderful research compiled into a book wrought with spelling, grammatical, and sentence structure errors. Unnecessary comments by the author makes reading even more tedious. A new edition with a good editor would make this book priceless.

This book is methodologically sound AND useful. Suggestions and advices are backed up by literature, it's not just the usual collection of "expert opinions". By the same token, suggestions and advices are sound and practical, not just impractical "erudite hypotheses". Perfect for pracademics!

Everything you need to consider for asynchronous learning
I have found this book to be very helpful if you are REALLY interested in doing asynchronous work online.The authors are leading edge thinkers about this subject who have earned themselves a place in the world consulting to people who want to do this.The problem is that many, many people only THINK they know what asynchronous learning is and until you actually experience it you won't know.Can't know something until you learn it.Rena and Keith have done a very good job of showing you EVERYTHING you need to know to get the job done.You can use it like a menu, take what you want and leave the rest alone.They spend a good deal of time trying to get people to understand the TRUE nature of an asynchronous world.They are sincerely at the leading edge.I think I know what leading edge is, I think I'm there experiencing true asynchronous learning now at the renowned Fielding Institute.Good book for your reference.You may not need all of it NOW but you will soon! ... well-intentioned
this book is really intended for people who are considering business school. the first half covers admissions strategy (good essays, choosing the right target school, how to craft a good application), and the second half covers, in less depth, the wind-up to the start of your full-time mba education. like other reviewers mentioned, it tells you things that are somewhat given, like "research good neighborhoods to live in near your school", "make sure your study area is well lit and quiet", and "make sure you have a high-speed internet connection". while the interviews with ceo's are interesting, the book doesn't offer too much in the way of guiding your 'game-plan' for your mba education. there's some discussion of core classes in the b-school curriculum, as well as the importance of summer internship placement and group work in classes.

First part of book is relatively insightful, they interview key ceo's about bschool and you get a relatively balanced perspective. The review of what a bschool course load could look like and an overview of common teaching styles was helpful. Yes, this book does not spend time on or recommend part time programs. Nearly all mentors / authors are from top tier bschools.

Inspiration to Educators
This is a wonderfully engaging book for anyone who has an interest in deriving a deeper meaning from teaching.The book offers interesting and applicable advice for promoting the educational process through establishing a mentoring relationship.The book explains and provides a definition of mentoring with an overview of its history, the importance of mentors and guidelines for mentoring. And Not Only for Adult-Learners....
Both at work and at home, we function either as a mentor or as a student. And in some situations, as both. We provide or receive information, suggestions, criticism, etc. This is an on-going process. How can we help others to learn more? How can we can learn more from others? These and other key questions are posed and then addressed in this book. Daloz focuses primarily on the mentor (or teacher) whose "partnership" with each student "finally determines the value of an education. In the nature of that partnership lies the mentor's art." Those who share my high opinion of this book are urged to check out Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline [bold face] and The Dance of Change bold face]. I am reminded of a situation years ago when there was a tuition increase at Harvard and parents vehemently protested. Then president Derek Bok responded "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." The value of the mentor's art may be incalculable (I believe it is) but, as Daloz carefully explains, it is an art worthy of those who practice it with passion, competence, and commitment. What I think
This book is an excellent tool for anyone with a basic grasp of the subjects contained on the GED tests, who are simply looking to improve and practice. It is very self-learning based, and widely extensive as to test prep.

Designing Powerful Training Has Impact
This book is exactly what I was looking for to design a more impactful training.I reccomend it if you are looking for a step-by-step approach to get you started.

A tremendous resource for any training professional.
I have been in the training profession for about 15 years and have lookedfor a resource like this for a long time.As a training professional Ihave been asked to develop training materials for numerous learning stylesand levels and have struggled to interpret what my customers are needing. This book details very simply what it takes to develop training materialsand how to be an effective consultant in a timely manner.I found theconcepts to be extremely effective and realistic and usable.I manage atraining department of 8 trainers who have tremendous trainingresponsibilities.Because this book is such an excellent resource Ipurchased it for each of my training consultants and they have used it manytimes over.I really appreciate the creative methods detailed by theauthors in creating that "powerful" training program that ourcustomers expect.

I have been designing and presenting workshops for many years but "Designing Powerful Training:The Sequential-Iterative Model" by Michael Milano and Diane Ullius is the most crisp, clear, and concise "how to" and "why" book that I've read on the subject.Theory and practice are consistently presented hand-in-hand. I particularly like the way Milano and Ullius honor all varieties of learning styles.They do this in the design process as well as in their explanations.The result is that I felt included as a colleague and as a co-learner. The book has actuallymotivated me to redouble my own commitment to design training events with the same sensitivity. But what I like most is the presentation of a process that is both sequential and iterative.To me that means a process that is both disciplined and flexible, invariant yet creative. The five point model helped me recommit to the importance of paying attention up-front to writing ! out complete goals and objectives.The authors do a great job of demonstrating why this is so essential.
