Cranton gives us great strategies for developing self-awareness as educators. We can become aware of our assumptions by trouble-shooting our own ideas with a suggested list from Cranton: write critical incidents(episodes in our own lives thatcreated new perspectives), keepingjournals, writing life histories, conducting criteria analysis, andengaging in a crisis-decision simulation. Cranton says discussionswith colleagues and friends may be enough of an impetus for explicatingassumptions.When we question the what, how and whys' we can becomereflective practioners. The next step is integrating these assumptions intoan informed theory of practice. Authoritative on Adult Ed.
This book is an update of Brundage and MacKeracher's earlier work, Adult Learning Principles and Their Application to Program Planning, that they did for the Ontario Ministry of Education. buying my second copy . . .
I am working with middle and high school students who have reading problems.This book includes several approaches to reading instruction, and itself becomes a workbook for the student.It is organized well anddoes not "talk down" to students by using "less than"adult content.I am finding it useful, and it inspires ideas of my own totry as well.My expertise on phonics, word roots, reading comprehensionis broad, but not stellar.Still, most of what Wilf presents squares withmy knowledge, unlike some instructional books which have information thatis simplistic, or just plain wrong.At the same time I read this book, Iwas reading Moustafa's Beyond Traditional Phonics.Although Moustafa istalking about reading instruction with young students, the two books intandem gave me a nice balance for developing my ideas. ... One of the best books I've read
Like the first reviewer, I was enchanted with this book.I've read parts of it many times and think about its tenets often.If you are interested in how people learn, teaching children, or types of schooling then this book is for you.It is timely and timeless.

Well-Read and Well-Said
This is a short little book, but its brevity belies its significance. Here is one of the most clear-headed, profound, straightforward, well-reasoned, and eloquent arguments for the value of literature--as Literature, not ideology or entertainment or historical artifact or whatnot--I've seen in a long time. Since I was expecting something of a diatribe against critical theory, pop culture studies, and all that jazz, I also found this book to be admirably even-handed. Edmundson gives these things their due while critiquing the way they can get in the way of the matter at hand if given too much emphasis. And the matter at hand is of course literature's ability to expand the reader, to ask the big questions without providing pat answers or stereotyped solutions universally applicable, to challenge one to think and feel for oneself--to know oneself, in fact.
not my field
I kind of got sucked into this book by surprise--literature and literary criticism are not at all my fields, and I've never really sympathized with people who would choose them as a field. (My own primary interests are religious studies, and the philosophy of science).
Difficult for average reader? Maybe that's the point.
This is a wise, short, and difficult book. For example, he includes a fascinating discussion using religion as a jumping-off point for resolving post-modernism's overly relativistic thinking. Edmundson focuses on deep questions for readers - what does your reaction to a book say about you? Why do you like a character and how does he/she reflect you?

An Essential Resource for all Educators of Adults
As an instructor of adults myself, I was first introduced to this book in an Instructional Methods course I was taking in my doctoral program in Adult Education. I was pleasantly suprised to find that not only did it notread like a traditional textbook, but that it was very enjoyable and easyto read. Cantor presents the information in a very clear, concise manner,giving many helpful and useful suggestions on how to work with and instructadults in a variety of settings.
