2-0 out of 5 stars Long list, light on substance
This LIST of schools IS comprehensive. The practical information about each school is exceedingly light, however. One will do better searching online at sites like geteducated dot com which deliver more in-depth information about each of the schoosl that you can actually use - not just lists of schoos with anemic entries like: Name of school, address, website, phone number. Duh! That the book reads like a phonebook (and is equally inspiring) yet has a large number of schools, an index and some ancillary discussions are the only redeeming qualities of the overpriced book. Altogether, I will keep and not sell mine but would recommend you pick it up used or look at it in a bookstore to see if you like the "classified ads" style.

5-0 out of 5 stars best seller from an author formerly involved with unaccredited schools
"A degree is often more useful than a good education or valuable skills in your field." (the authors, pg. 3)
5-0 out of 5 stars Exemplary, Exhaustive, Honorable, Refreshingly Candid
Arm yourself with this lastest, updated version of Bears Guide before diving into the murky world of earning a degree through distance learning, particularly advanced degrees. It's exemplary and exhaustive in its research and useful database, the authors are honorable and refreshingly straight-talking - their candor will help you read between the lines of legality some questionable institutions engage in. You'll learn who's doing non-residency or semi-resident education, who's offering what degrees or fields of study, and who's reputable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really great
I have been wanting to organize a book club for so long and I am finally going to realize my dream on April 20th when my group meets for the first time. We are just a bunch of young single adult women. Our first book club choice is ANNE OF GREEN GABLES and I can see that we will have a lot to talk about. Rachel's book was very easy to understand and very helpful. If the club works as good as expected, I have to personally send Rachel a message.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great 'warts and all' reference
So... you know you love reading, you want a good excuse to get together with others who love to read and you think you'll start a book club.Great - read this book! Not only does Jacobsohn cover what you'd expect (likeproviding a multitude of suggested reading lists) but she covers the issuesyou may not think of immediately - like acknowledging that people arelikely to relate their reading to personal experiences in their lives andmaking sure that everyone in your reading group understands the importanceof keeping confidences. My only criticism - not much attention paid to thegrowing phenomenon of online book clubs.

5-0 out of 5 stars An informing and entertaining reference book!
This book is not only a concise, step-by-step guide to forming a book group but also is written in a style that is sweet, funny and entertaining to read. Ms Jacobsohn informs the reader of her recommendations and pastexperiences but provides options and ideas that might work for others.Booklists, administrative details, recipes and "stories" of otherbook groups give much guidance. The excellent design of the book and thestyle in which it is written enables quick and easy reference uponoccasion. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Veritable Encyclopedia of American Education Movement
Harold W. Stubblefield & Patrick Keane have written a veritable encyclopedia of the American Education Movement with all the key players and influences. For those who enjoy a multi-faceted historical approach, Stubblefield and Keane keep the reader apprised of other movements and historial events happening concurrently and influencing American Education. This book is a necessity for the education student, educator, and researcher seeking to understand American Education and its history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adult Education
I highly recommend this book for scholars, as well as students, of Adult Education.Stubblefield and Keane not only provide a linear look at the progression of adult education from the Colonial Period today, but demonstrate the effects societal trends impacted the demand for adult education. A easy and enjoyable read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adult Education in the American Experience....
Very interesting book!As a scholar of adult education, understanding the history of this educational movement is paramount. We can only progress if we understand our roots and learn from the past.Although written as a historical book about adult education, "Adult Education in the American Experience:From the Colonial Period to the Present" by Subblefield and Keane focuses on the societal effects of adult education on the development of the American people.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Closing the Achievement Gap", August 22, 2002
This book, "Closing the Achievement Gap: How to Reach Limited-Formal-Schooling and Long Term English Learners", is an excellent resource for teachers of older English learners with limited formal schooling or English learners with more conversational than academic fluency.Yvonne S. Freeman and David E. Freeman, professors at the Graduate School at Fresno Pacific University, describe in detail these two types of students and provide four main ideas to help teachers meet the academic needs of these struggling students. The Freemans' also cite research on effective teaching practices and describe three teachers working with these particular students in a multi-grade, a middle, and a high school classroom. All three teachers are successfully implementing research proven theories in their classroom practices to help close the achievement gap.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars make an online community?
It is very understandable that the book should emanate from Athabasca University. By sheer geographic necessity, that uni would be acutely interested in distance learning, aka online teaching and learning. The book is directed towards librarians and academics in any field, who might be interested in promulgating their data and research to a potentially global audience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Promoting Social Change
Unearthing Seeds of Fire:The Idea of Highlander by Frank Adams traces the history of Highlander Folk School and that of the founder, Myles Horton. This book is stimulating reading, particularly for adult educators who understand that education is the key to power. The author traces Highlander Folk School from the time the idea came to Myles Horton, through the many changes that occurred throughout the years. The book illustrates how education promotes growth in an individual that can expand to effect social change. As the author contends, "education must be born of the creative tension between how life is lived and how life might be lived in a free society."(Adams, xv)
4-0 out of 5 stars Power to the People (Education for Social Change)
Unearthing the Seeds of Fire: The Idea of Highlander by Frank Adams with Myles Horton is a book about social change through education via empowering the individual and a semi-biographical narrative about the folk school founder, Myles Horton. In a broader perspective, this book follows the political trends and intellectual movements of the United States from the early to mid-twentieth century.Specifically, Highlander illustrates how ideas that challenge the status quo can change the world, one mind at a time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unearthing Seeds of Fire: The Idea of Highlander
"Conflict is a daily struggle in the lives of powerless people" writes Frank Adams, echoing the words of Myles Horton, a social activist and progressive educator, who played a crucial role in Labor and Civil Rights movements, and in the lives of poor whites of the Appalachian region. Adams has written an excellent book about the philosophy of adult education and social change. The book captured my interest and kept me on edge.Reading it, I felt as if I was watching a match between David and Goliath and not knowing what was going to happen or who was going to win next.I would definitely recommend it to any Adult Education scholar, student or general reader who is willing to join voices with others to challenge the status quo. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful and Hopeful Book
I reviewed this book in the Annotated Bibliograpy of Learning A Living; A Guide to Planning Your Career and Finding a Job for People with Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder and Dyslexia. Here is what I wrote: 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book!
As the parent of a 22 year old learning disabled daughter I can attest to the validiy of everything written in this book.5-0 out of 5 stars A guideline and a necessity of us the majority without LD.
It is for a layperson like myself - as well as the professional person - a very good and rewarding book to read. I learned a lot from what I read - and wanted to continue - because it is not too technical - well, there is some chapters of defining the terms and the framework to relate to. However it never takes over- and there is so much LOVE and CARE in her work. I like the brilliant way in which the author brings in the voices and experiences of 13 individuals.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Wayyy too simple a book!!!
This book is too easy. All of its topics are so obvious.I felt like I was reading things I already knew!!! I think everyone could benefit of any other complicated book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time & Money for Current Students
I have never been moved to write a review before, but I feel it is my civic duty to warn people away from this book. I am enrolled as an online student already and bought this book because it would supposedly give me tips for developing a good study schedule and, well, be a successful online student. The publisher is misleading customers by putting a big red burst on the cover that says "Learn how to set up an independent study schedule and stick to it" (did they READ this book before designing the cover??!!). This book contains nothing of the sort. The 33 pages (of 266) that are actually dedicated to coursework are almost insulting to read. For example, some of the "helpful tips" include: "you will want to have moderate experience with using a computer" and "you need goals and focus." The author then gives a website to visit for "specific information" on things like study skills and time management. This book will NOT help you be an effective online student. It might help you decide whether or not to become an online student, which is the only reason it gets a star.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good and Helpful Book but
it needs to be updated. My copy of this book is helpful but I find that there are websites that no longer work and some of the information is outdated as well. Much has happened in the online world since it was written so I came to Amazon.com to see if there was a newer updated version that I could buy. Alas, there seems not to be one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars RHB Fan
If you wish to be inspired to learn, read Dean Richard Brodhead's book. With a wry wit and enviable eloquence, Yale College's longtime dean trumpets the importance of liberal arts education and motivates the stoutest of hearts to break-free from staid camps of mutual agreement and explore unknown worlds of intellectual, social, and cultural variation. In short, Brodhead inspires his readers (and listeners, to those who were fortunate enough to hear him speak) to seek education. His life's work are the thousands of college students he has shepherded through Yale (and soon Duke), but his lessons apply well to everyone. 4-0 out of 5 stars Classic
This book provides an excellent overview of the classic education philosphies in the context of adult education. It is very useful as a text book in graduate level courses, but would need to be supplimented with other resources providing information on emerging theories.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive overview
"This book brings to life issues concerned with the philosophy of adult educators and relationships betweeen education and society.Due to it primary North American focus, the book will find its major audiencethere, but will appeal also to readers everywhere with an interest in thehistorical development ofadult education. The strength of the work liesin the way it casts U.S. adult education in new roles: the facts cometogether in new ways tocreate new gestalts.... It isdifficult to beobjective about a book that reflects so accurately and faithfully the widerange of options that educational thought presents to us.Therefore, weconfess to an overriding desire to induce as many readers as possible tobeg, buy or borrow PHILOSOPHICAL FOUNDATIONS OF ADULT EDUCATION--not justto add to your personal library so much as to enjoy a reactivated searchfor yourpersonal truth under the capable ministrations of Elias andMerriam."
