From the standpoint of a smorgasbord of learning tools & strategies, this book is unsurpassed, even up to today!
The first time I encountered the author, Ronald Gross, I was then reading with fascination his two masterpieces: 'The Lifelong Learner: A Guide for Self Improvement' in the late 70's & followed by 'The Independent Scholar's Handbook: How to Turn Your Interest in Any Subject into Expertise' in the mid-80's. In fact, I also remembered that I even had a brief communication via fax with the author.These two books eventually propelled me along the journey of self-directed learning throughout the 80's. They were my field guides.
Survive the Knowledge Age
The coming of the Knowledge Age requires us to learn how to learn. I have found few books that address this subject, though. As a learning professional in corporate America, I have discovered that even the most intelligent folks are sometimes inefficient or ineffective learners.Reading this book and applying its concepts is a great start if you truly want to become a lifelong learner. I could not stand this book. It used verbs like it was going out of style. It tries to make you believe that you're about to embark upon an amazing adventure of learning where discoveries will lead to ultimate fulfillment and success :) . It's 75% fluff to make you believe that all life problems will be solved if only you could learn how to learn. It was like Anthony Robbins wrote it. Motivational B.S.. Some of it was good, if you siffed long enough you could get a couple gold flakes out of this one, that's why I gave it 2 stars instead of a deserving 1. But it was so anoying in how it was written. An interesting and eye-opening book
"What will people say about me after I'm gone?" "After the funeral, and after the will, how will everyone think of me?" For the average young person, such thoughts are not important. However, once a person reaches their 50th birthday, such thoughts become much more important. That's what this book is all about.
Best book of the year
For a reader who has moved out of the "fast lane" and into the second half of life's journey, Charles Hayes provides insight and inspiration. In the first half, we are busy proving ourselves. By the second half, we know what works. We know what counts. We know what matters. We realize that things aren't black or white or true or false; we're able to understand and embrace ambiguity.

This book was written not only for the experienced adult educator but for anyone interested in learning about designing your own course or system.This is a practical book.Houle reviews a history of program design along with five case studies that illustrate the model that he proposes.His model presents a detailed analysis of 11 categories of possible educational activities along with the details of his 7-step system of program design. This book is well-written and practical.His focus ranges from the individual program to mass audiences.I especially like the chapter on "Mastering a Personal System of Practice" which helps the reader translate the system into a useful and practical one.Overall, I think that it is an excellent book and highly recommend it as a worthwhile addition to an educator's library. ... An Infomative and Helpful Resource for the Layman
At last a book on learning disabilities that youdo not need a doctorate in the subject to understand.I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs some practical advice on this subject.

A highly informative and understandable resource
This is the best book I have read on the subject for adults with learning disabilities. Shapiro and Rich write in a way that is easily understandable by laymen and also in a way that is highly informative. If you have alearning disability, you can easily relate to their examples of other realpeople with similar problems and learn how LD problems are diagnosed, whatcauses the problem and treatment methods, including strategies and drugs.
