3-0 out of 5 stars Oh! What it could have been.
This is, I hate to say it, a mis-titled book.More a history of technological and organizational innovation in the five major armed forces it covers, the book singularly fails to address, with detailed examples, how the weapons and force structures that resulted were used in combined arms systems on the battlefield.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly misleading
In this book, Helen Caldicott presents her view of the continuing nuclear dangers facing the world. As a student of nuclear proliferation issues, I read it with interest.I was very disappointed, however.Ms. Caldicott presents a biased, misleading picture of the issues facing the world.
1-0 out of 5 stars "There she goes again......"
She was wrong then, and she's wrong now.Just as Helen Caldicott was wrong about a nuclear freeze in the 1980's, she's wrong about the fight against terrorism now.Does anyone really take seriously the thoughts of an appeaser who would rather let terrorist enemies run over us than go after them forcefully as we should?5-0 out of 5 stars Nuclear Madness Explained by a Nobel Peace Prize Nominee

4-0 out of 5 stars good arguments on both sides
Leventhal summarises a workshop in 2001 that argued whether nuclear proliferation and nuclear power were separable. The book has strong, articulate arguments for and against this claim. Whatever your current views on this issue, you might profitably gain by reading the book. It does not present straw dummies on one side.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Architecture is the art of compromise''
`'Sixteen Acres. Architecture and the outrageous struggle for the future of Ground Zero'' by Philip Nobel.
5-0 out of 5 stars A lip lock with reality
Sixteen Acres is a gripping read for any architect or citizen who hopes that a monumental building in this era can be transcendent. No where have I seen such a thorough accounting of the forces that come to bear on the form of a building. Sixteen Acres is the record of how the desire of the American people to find an expression for the loss they suffered-or the telling off they wished to do-was shaped by the many powerful forces that acted on the site: Governor Pataki's aspirations, the widows',the mayor's, the LMDC,the Port Authority, Larry Silverman's 99 year lease. The book is truly about the profession of "architecture and the outrageous struggle for the future of Ground Zero."
3-0 out of 5 stars Inexplicable lack of illustrations a major flaw in this book
Several months ago I read the James Glanz and Eric Lipton book "City In The Sky: The Rise and Fall of The World Trade Center".That book, authored by a pair of New York Times reporters, chronicled the long history of the project from the germ of an idea at the 1939 World's Fair, to the design and planning of a project unlike any other in the history of mankind, to the cataclysmic events of September 11th, 2001. Since I enjoyed that book so much I was very excited when I came across "Sixteen Acres".It seemed to me the perfect sequel to "City In The Sky".Author Philip Nobel writes about architecture for the New York Times and set about the business of documenting the incredibly complicated and sometimes acrimonious process of redeveloping the World Trade Center site.

2-0 out of 5 stars Would have liked more substance and less rehash...
In this hastily prepared book it doesn't take long to discover that you are reading a manuscript written for those unfamiliar with Dawood Ibrahim and his operation. What I hoped to find was a detailed explanation of the inner-workings of the D-Company and the powerful hand which guides it from behind the intelligence cloak.Without a detailed knowledge of India and its history of strife between the Muslim and Hindu communities, it is difficult to understand where Ibrahim fits into the picuture. You're not going to get a clear understanding of the dealings of where Ibrahim's D-Company activities end and Intelligence groups like Pakistan's ISI begin. No elumination on the shadowy connections between the D-Company, ISI, Al-Qaeda and the CIA.These confusing alliances remain unresolved. In painting a picture of Ibrahim as a ruthless drug smuggling foreign mob boss with ties to terror organizations and foreign intelligence operatives, the average American citizens worst fears post 9-11 are realized. 3-0 out of 5 stars Lost focus
The book's name is a misnomer. Initially, it talks about how Dawood made his way upto the top in the shady underworld, but then the focus shifts from Dawood to Afganistan, Pakistan, CIA, ISI etc, and ends up in establishing the relationships between these entities. What role Dawood plays or is playing in these tie ups is not mentioned. Only few pages do justice to the book title.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining book on Dawood--one bad man!
Fascinating read.Initially, I thought some of the author's claims about Dawood Ibrahim were purely speculative--especially the nuclear black market chapter. But the Times of India recently did a story about this book and intelligence sources confirmed Dawood's involvement. This is frightening.

3-0 out of 5 stars Updated Propaganda
What started out ten years ago as a special interest group holding a small former Army school, SOA, responsible as just the common ground where alleged criminal people passed through before or after allegedly committing a crime, this 2d edition spins the culpability forward and upward to a more emotions-inciting "responsible for training the criminals" and uses the critical post-9/11 buzz phrase - "training terrorists".3-0 out of 5 stars Symbolism through Literature
This book tries to make a case using really imaginative logic -- as in: Person A allegedly committed a crime;Person A also at sometime went to SOA therefore going to SOA casues a person to commit a crime. Please -- where is the accuracy in the use of verifiable facts?Example: Your Gen Galtieri went to an Army school that preceded SOA some 30 years before he assumed the Junta leadership how does that make "attending SOA" responsible or complicit in his later actions? -- where is the cause and effect? What I really got from this book is that the author definitely opposes past and current US foreign policy in the region and disregards facts to defend his position.OK - so take your criticism to the people who made the policy and the people who approve and fund it -- the folks in Washington DC!All this book does is prove that propaganda is a collection of mainly unrelated facts placed together to support a position. The truth is that the evidence and facts that have surfaced since this book was written disprove the author's many negative allegations and conclusaions of this school.

5-0 out of 5 stars SOA/WHISC- not an issue of the past
Jack Neslon-Pallmeyer's new book, School of Assassins: Guns Greed and Globalization, brings the history and development of the School of the Americas, including its recent name change to The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, into perspective along with the developments of the global and national economies and militaries. In a time when the role of the SOA/WHISC is being seriously and persistently challenged, the name change and other cosmetic alterations represent a need to continue to build and strengthen the thoughtfulness and articulation of the movement and voices that are calling for the school's closure. This book ties together many of the critical issues at play in the debate over the SOA/WHISC and puts it in the context of the role it has in the world today, as well as how it has developed and changed with the changing world and economy in which we all live. 1-0 out of 5 stars A good book...if you're a Democrat
I was very disappointed with this book.I was looking for a comprehensive review of all of the issues associated with WMD proliferation...something evenly balancing conservative and liberal policies/viewpoints and accomplishments over time (no one's perfect with respect to this stuff). But instead this book reads like a Clinton re-election speech.Should have known since it was funded by Ted Turner Documentaries.5-0 out of 5 stars World issues...analysis and solutions....one view
In a classic example to the power of anecdotal style of writing for discussing "serious" issues, Schram is successful in conveying the perils faced by the world (mostly from the Western, and more specifically from the US point of view). The book has been organized into distinct and independent sections covering various aspects of the terrorist threats. The author does manage to convey important ideas and some potential solutions (mostly utopian dreams) to the problems identified in each section (the identification of the problem and the analysis of the origins of the problems are well discussed and documented). Of particular interest were the section on nuclear threat in the South Asia, and the interview with terrorist "planner" from Al-Queda. In the former, the author provides a chilling array fo scenarios of what could happen if indeed a nuclear war does erupt in South Asia. The dangers of "fog of war" , quoting mostly Pakistani army personnel and US analysts makes for some compelling reading. The section also provides an interesting account of how the two main players - India and Pakistan became nuclear players from the seemingly innocent "atoms of peace" program. The role of the West (particularly US and Canada) in the case of India and the role of China (in Pakistan's program) is well discussed. The author fails to provide any "reasonable and practical" solutions to defuse the tense situations. The same holds true for most of the book - good discussions on problem statement and description, fairly good analysis, not-so-great proposed solution methods. There is also a section on what ordinary citizens and "world leaders" can do to decrease the threats mentioned in the book..makes for some interesting reading, but doubtful if any foreign policy framers would abide by it, given the political framework the foreign poliocy decisions have to depend on. 4-0 out of 5 stars You need a lathe and a Tig welder to make this silencer.
The author states this right up front. He has no control over what the editors put in the ad-blub. He says the same thing in the book on making a can for the Mini-14. He says to do your learning on a .22, and to read his .22 "can-book" FIRST. This man's designs work just as he says that they do. If you are not a machinist and a welder, of course you can't follow the instructions in this book.It would help to be an accomplished gunsmith, too.

1-0 out of 5 stars All crap all the time
