5-0 out of 5 stars thought-provoking
Galtung and Ikeda's book "Choose Peace" elaborates on humanestrategies towards resolving complex global issues such as Nuclear armsbuildup and third world affairs. It goes on to highlight the important rolethat the United Nations can play in quelling (from a soft power standpoint)these burgeoning problems. It stresses specific non-agressive and humaneanswers such as world dialogue and international cooperation. It alsooffers food for thought on a variety of social interests/human rightsissues. It looks at these issues from an all inclusive perspective ratherthan a cost benefit analysis. It examines the effects of these issues froma world perspective. From page one I was already rexamining many of myopinions and prevconcieved notions regarding topics such as capitalpunishment and global conflict resolution. I would greatly recommend thisbook, as it challeges the reader to reevaluate the tried and true andreflect on society's ills from a symbiotic global vantage point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro to Peace Studies
For readers unfamiliar with the growing Peace Studies Movement this book will provide lucid, challenging and inspiring information for understanding contemporary world conditions. The dialogue format is excellent for bothgeneral and academic reader and it contains none of the alienating, arrogant and removed discourse of academe. For the intelligent reader whois interested in the relationship between spiritual health of communitiesand how the world arrived at the condition it is in today, this is anexcellent starting point that will leave you wanting more from bothauthors.

1-0 out of 5 stars a paradigm of phlegmatic pontification
"Choose Peace", written by Soka Gakkai International President and University of Hawaii professor Johan Galtung, attempts to provide salient insights and attainable, non-violent solutions to regional andworld conflicts. In attempting to identify the derivation of conflict andworld "instability" the authors set the parameters of theirdiscussion around such conventional topics as religiousfundamentalism, nuclear and conventional arms proliferation, capitalpunishment, and the reform of the United Nations. 5-0 out of 5 stars A look at Walt Disney, through the eyes of people who worked with him.
I have read many books on the life of Walt Disney. This book offers a different perspective than one would find in official authorized works about Walt.It is a collection of interviews of several of the (many) people who worked for him. What I liked most, is the candor of the people being interviewed. They felt free not to "sugar-coat" any of their answers, giving very truthful responses. To think that most of the people interviewed are no longer living, makes me appreciate the work of the various interviewers, capturing all of this valuable insight, that would have otherwise been lost.I enjoyed this book very much, and will be buying the other two in the series. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Common Sense on Common Sense of Weapons of Mass Destruction
Previous reviewers aside, Ambassador Thomas Graham's book, Common Sense on Weapons of Mass Destruction, provides the reader with a knowledgeable look at a very serious problem which continues to plague today's global community: the proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD's). The strengths of this book are threefold: it is brief, it is easy to understand, and it provides a basic understanding of the problem.
3-0 out of 5 stars Common sense, if only with the blinders on.
Graham provides a good summary of the development of treaties and agreements meant to curb, and ultimately reduce the amount of weapons (nuclear and otherwise). The chapters are arranged logically and his writing style is clear.Jargon is at a minimum and there is a helpful glossary at the back of the book. His chapter on chemical and biological weapons is far too brief considering the prevalence of chemical and biological weapons used in wars going as far back as WWI.This is a minor foible though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Very Interesting
This was a very interesting and eye opening book. The book is broken into chapters that look at different aspects of the current war / armaments industry. We get the full picture from arms dealers, armaments companies and their lobbyists to private mercenary companies. The author gives the arms dealers some extra mystery by introducing us to two of the more successful ones, both of which were ex-Nazis.We also get a who's who name run down of past government officials who are now employees or lobbyists for large arms manufactures.I now know where all the cold warriors go after they leave office.5-0 out of 5 stars A great militiary book
I thought this book was great.I think that Private Militiary 4-0 out of 5 stars War, Incorporated
Ken Silverstein's "Private Warriors" is an excellent resource -- I wish we had more journalists like him, willing to delve deep into a story and present just the facts, and leave it to the reader to connect the dots. Silverstein doesn't preach: he just offers an incredible amount of information -- all but the most diehard reactionary will find it persuasive.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars No nonsense my buns, he began to lose me with the activist drivel
I give it two stars because the guy writing this has his heart in the right place. To call it no nonsense to me would indicate it is a book that tells it raw and is not slanted.this book couldn't be more slanted to "activists" and liberals.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Nonsense Review
This book is a wonderful gem for both enthusiastic activists as well as the general reader. As the title suggests, it provides a stunning look into the controversial world into the Arms Trade. What's particularly about the No Nonsense Guide to the Arms Trade is that it is both very readable and very concise. The author wastes no time at all at the beginning of the book and thrusts the reader into a plathora of information. Everything from Who Deals Arms and Government Involvement to an in-depth look at the consequences of the Small Arms Trade in Africa is covered in the Guide.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Bungling Gun Control in Canada
Heidi Rathjen was strongly affected by the December 6, 1989, murder of 14 women at the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, the University's of Montreal's affiliated engineering school, which Heidi attended at the time. It was truly a shocking mass murder, as the killer ranted against feminists while gunning down his victims. However, the story of Heidi's crusade is not at all inspiring, given the incredible bureaucratic incompetence that is associated with her pet project, Canada's intrusive and ineffective gun registry. I am not a gun owner, but I can nevertheless drive a Mac truck through the holes in Heidi's so-called 'arguments' in favour of the gun registry. For example, comparing the registration of cars to the registration of guns is like comparing night and day; you can't drive at all without a car licence on your vehicle (you'd stand out like a sore thumb), whereas how does the same scenario apply to guns (especially those owned by criminals)? I'll give Heidi credit for the work she did, but I sincerely wish she'd expounded her prodigious energies and talents on something that would truly have bolstered the cause of gun control, while not demonizing law-abiding gun owners in the process. Reading this book leaves one with a bad taste in his/her mouth. It just goes to prove that smart and determined persons can do some pretty dumb things! And on top of that, this book is not at all objective. It's strongly biased against gun owners, implying that they're a bunch of insensitive cretins who don't care about crime. The only reason for reading this book is that it shows how passion for a cause can totally override a person's common sense (but you have to read between the lines to realize that).

4-0 out of 5 stars The Canadian Attack
December 6 starts with an account of The Montreal Massacre, the murder of female engineering students in Canada. It contains little about the lives of the victims, but for anyone interested in the realities of passing new legislation, it is an excellent and highly readable account. It is also a collection of the best answers to assault weapon advocates and gives a succinct and clear response (both qualitative and quantitative) to gun lobby arguments like "Guns don't kill people. People kill people." This book will not please any gun enthusiast, but for lobbyists, it is a great guide to how to overcome far superior numbers and budgets in passing legislation. Americans may particularly benefit from having an international point of view. It is a quick read and full of political lessons. The book does not make the connection with Middle Eastern terrorism as this Islamic gunman is yelling the same prayer as Mohammed Atta going into the World Trade Center. What is this prayer that must be shouted at the end? The book does not explain the appeal of a mass murder and suicide to a religious zealot who does not consider himself to be a madman. While the legislation can be justified, it does not address the root causes of criminal justice reform as it relates to a specific case of child abuse. The victim must be treated to stop the cycle of future abuse. The book underscores how victimized bystanders feel and act when they are helpless to change history.
