This book was pleseant to read because Socrates was accused of corrupting of young Greek people's mind. Socrates made mockery of his trial. Eventually, he was convicted and was order to drink poison to die.

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy and honest companion
Get Around in Spain gets to the nitty gritty of traveling in a wellorganised and succinctly written format. The first few pages offer briefreviews of each region of Spain which makes it useful for pre-travelplanning while at home, and its compact size makes it easy to bring duringa day or night out once you've arrived. If you only have a limited time inSpain as I had, you will find the detailed but highly applicable languagelessons, and the photographs of the everday scenes one encounters whilegetting around Spain by plane, train, car or bus indispensible to a smoothtrip. There is so much beauty and good food and drink in Spain and thistightly packed guide amazingly covers it all.Its not a replacement for amore detailed accomodations and attractions guide like a Lonely Planet, butit is the perfect companion to one because it has the most importantdetails and useful language scenarios readily available, without having todig through or drag along a larger guidebook during say a night on thetown. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars POWERFUL. Great insight, well documented, very disturbing

5-0 out of 5 stars The Comparisons are Glaring
This book obliterates simplistic, politically correct views about Islam. The word-for-word comparisons between the teachings of Muhammed and the teachings of Christianity, Buddhism, and other religions, are stunning.Take, for example, the famous story of Jesus' intervention when a crowd was about to stone an adulterous woman. His words, to let the person "who is without sin cast the first stone", sent the mob retreating in shame. He then told the woman to, "Go and sin no more."As the autor quotes from the Quran, Muhammed was confronted with a similar situation.A pregnant adulterous woman had come to him requesting that he pray with her for forgiveness. He sent her away until the baby was born. When she came back months later, he sent her away until the child was weened. When she came back as directed, he took the child and gave it to one of his men as a gift.Muhammed then ordered the mother buried up to her shoulders and stoned to death. It really is time for media pundits, college professors, and self-serving politicos to stop making shallow moral equivalence statements about Islam, the Quran, and the Crusades. This book needs to be read and studied by those who now are in a position to give away our birthright. It took the ancient Greeks, the Judeo-Christian tradition, the Magna Carta, the U.S. Constitution, and hundreds of years of Western Civilization to produce the most beneficent and free society in history. Here, Muslims and others can practice their beliefs without fear.We must insist that spokesmen and apologists for Islam demand that this "religion of peace" grant its neighbors the same rights the Western democracies have gladly given to them.Read the book. Its an eye-opener.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good information ruined by biased commentary
This is an interesting book in that it does have valuable information regarding Islam and misconceptions regarding Islam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hurray! Bravo! Adesso parlo l'italiano.
I am a basket case when it comes to learning foreign languages. What is more, I am a klutz when it comes to looking up meanings.5-0 out of 5 stars Best Beginning Italian Course on the Market
I agree with other language aficionados that it is nearly impossible to find a good solid foreign language course these days. What I mean by good is 'useful, fast, and easy to learn'. Audio Fluency Italian is by far the best basic Italian course I have yet to experience. It is enjoyable to learn from, and the basic sentences that you learn to form are useful anywhere you go.I especially enjoyed the review since it is impossible to learn a language without lots of repetition. The manual was good too.Lots of exercises, travel phrases (including restaurant which were also on the tapes) etc ...

2-0 out of 5 stars Frustrated
Although I enjoyed listening to the Italian speaker and her dialogues with Mark, this course resulted in an inefficient use of my limited preparation time before heading for Italy.I agree with other reviewers that the rehashing on tapes 5 & 6 was adisappointment. But more frustrating was the fact that the "text" to which Mark repeatedly referred was a pamphlet that did not correspond,in terms of either page Nos.or tape Nos., to the audio materials. This meant I had to search for the tapes and pages that actually did correspond to material being presented on each tape. Most frustrating of all, when verb conjugation was presented, Mark referred several times to lists of verbs "in the back of the text" that listed tenses of various verbs. No such list was to be found anywhere in the text.I had to purchase another book to supplement Mark's pamphlet, and much time was wasted because the materials in this program were put together carelessly. I learned a lot of basics from the tapes, but the process was so frustrating that I wouldn't buy them again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better, but still worth it.
This tape is a collection of monologues from the show when it was on Comedy Central. While the monologues are funny, space is wasted by the shows music and the introduction of the guests for each show. The space saved could have been used for more jokes, but it still worth a listen.

1-0 out of 5 stars One minute monologues followed by guest introductions
If you're looking for some humorous political commentary, you won't find it here. The audio book consists of a series of one minute monologues in which Maher lays out the topics to be discussed on the show, followed by the guest introductions. There aren't any clips of the guests or Maheractually discussing those topics.Frankly there is nothing humorous orentertaining about listening to a series of topics and guest introductions. It's a waste of time and money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Life's Instruction Manual
People say life doen't come with an instruction manual, well this is it. Why you are here; what is important; how to deal with departure (death), your own and others; what happens if you spend your life sidetracked by the 'immediate but not important' issues. Written in a way that compels you to move to action, beyond simple intellectual curiousity. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quiet Revolution Is Pure Good Fortune
Reading the currently posted 75 reviews of Sogyal Rinpoche's "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" is an education in itself. Devotion, gratitude, and open-minded reading in the majority of the reviews are juxtaposed with ignorance, mis-information, and a desire to make points in other reviews. Thus is our human condition. There is a Tibetan saying, "When luck comes to the mouth, the tongue pushes it out." Let us see "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" for what it is: pure good fortune.

Editorial Review

Rarely does a book come along that tackles a perennially difficult human issue with such clarity and intelligence. Harold Kushner, a Jewish rabbi facing his own child's fatal illness, deftly guides us through the inadequacies of the traditional answers to the problem of evil, then provides a uniquely practical and compassionate answer that has appealed to millions of readers across all religious creeds. Remarkable for its intensely relevant real-life examples and its fluid prose, this book cannot go unread by anyone who has ever been troubled by the question, "Why me?" ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kushner Non-Academic Video
If you are looking for the academic lecture video by this same title (the one hour lecture delivered at UNC), this isn't it. This is a shorter video, with a pragmatic focus on individual persons and families dealing with catastrophic loss. A good primer for health care workers, but does not have the broad academic, philosophic, and theological applications that the earlier lecture video has.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to this book BEFORE reading mumbo jumbo
I wish more people could see that their humanity in the world rather than try to be God, or relentlessly seek answers when none exist. This is a brilliant discourse on the sadder parts of the human experience. Rather than try to alleviate pain by trying to find out why a tragedy happened, etc ... it is often more healing to also see the humanity of an event when no real explanation is possible. Bad things happen to good people and vice-versa. This world is complex and simple at the same time. But most of all, this book is a blessing against the current wave of New Age blame game mumbo jumbo...
4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, well done and thoughtful
This book is an easy and enjoyable read about a difficult philosophical topic. It deals with the practical reality of the exisence of evil and ties it to a combination of random chance and people's free will. That is the underlying thesis and deep philosophical arguments are avoided.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book...and I think you will too!
This book is about a little boy who finds a train in front of his house. He has a chance to go on a great journey...does he get on the train? I think you will like this book. This book makes me feel happy. Your kids might like it too!

4-0 out of 5 stars S, Bartkus Review
This beautifully written 1986 Caldecott Award winning book captivates readers young and old to love this Christmas classic. The story is told from a young boy's point of view of waiting for Santa to arrive on Christmas Eve, only to find a train waiting outside his bedroom window ready to go to the North Pole.Van Allsburg immediately draws the reader into the story by capturing the young boy leaning outside his window leading the reader to turn the page and see what the boy sees. The storyline follows the journey of a boy on the Polar Express train to see Santa in the North Pole and receive the first gift of Christmas. It teaches a strong lesson for those who believe and is appropriate for children while bringing back the warm eager memories of waiting for Santa.Van Allsburg's award winning illustrations are so realistic and fill the pages to capture the emotions and spirit of the children. His use of shading to create shadows on each page capture the essence of the Christmas Eve night. The lights in the background seem to pop out in the background as if one turned on a light switch. The detailed realistic drawings capture the emotion of the young boy especially when he lost the bell that Santa had given him.We see him on the train and empathize with him along with the other children as if we were riding right there in the train with him.Although the illustrations gained the main recognition of the story, his use of rich descriptive language also strengthen the story.Van Allsburg's use of similes to compare, give vivid details and appeal to the senses of the reader. For example, one line describes the chocolate cocoa as " melted chocolate bars."The popularity of this book was made into a blockbuster movie and Van Allsburg's talent of lasting artisitic impression and rich language was not lost. This book will continue to touch readers of all ages and capture the warm spirit of Christmas. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Out of the Valley of the Shadow
Almost every book about suicide focuses on its causes, often chronicling the final descent of its victims. This heartfelt study does something different and long overdue - it examines the lives of "failed" suicides and lets them describe how they emerged from of the seemingly bottomless darkness that nearly claimed them. Harrowing in its depiction of the pain that fills the suicidal mind, deeply moving in its stories of overcoming that pain and living beyond it, this book is an invaluable resource. By the time you turn the last page, hope will be even more tangible to you than despair. A book that should be kept permanently in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars This One Hits It Exactly.....
Having the disorder of depression; and teetering in and out of suicidal thoughts; I went in search of a book which explained what I was going through. After reading several books, I came across this one.THIS IS IT! It is the ONLY book I have found that "gets it".I havebought 5 copies - one by one - and have loaned them all out to friends andtherapists whom I wanted to really understand what I was going through. 5-0 out of 5 stars I believed someone really knew what suicide feels like
A few weeks after a failed attempt at suicide, I found this book when searching for some understanding of suicidal feelings. When I read the stories and the quotes of those who have overcome the tempation, I feltthat someone really did understand the way the mind narrows to the pointwhere sucide is the only option. I bought copies for those who weresurprised, and hurt, by my attempt. If you battle suicidal urges or wantto know what it is like to enter the "vortex", I would reccomendthis very helpful book.I thank the author and all he interviewed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful
I don't normally write reviews, but I feel really strongly about this one. I have "pure o" OCD which is harder to treat because there are no compulsions. Even so, this book (along with an amazing therapist) really saved me. Every night when I would lay there panicking about the terrible fears in my head, reading this book always helped me feel better (at the very least, it distracted me as is explained in the 4 steps). I wish I could give it more than 5 stars because it has such an amazingly positive impact on my mental health. After 5 years of living a much improved life by this system, I would highly recommend this to anyone with anxiety.
3-0 out of 5 stars Useful for some types of OCD, but simplistic and judgmental
This book teaches OCD sufferers four steps to use to control their disorder, starting with "relabeling" their fears and urges as just a symptom of a disorder, rather than "something real." By reading the case studies, I figured out that "relabeling" means telling yourself, "My urge to perform my compulsive ritual is not a supernatural omen that something terrible will happen if I don't perform the ritual; it's just a symptom of OCD."The author never actually explains this, however.
4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent self-help book
I recommend this book to all of my patients who have symptoms of OCD.It is one of the most helpful books on the subject ever written. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Debunking the Bush crowd
"Hubris", the fine new book by Michael Isikoff and David Corn, continues a parade of offerings which spell trouble for the Bush administration. Nicely paced and rich in detail, the authors delve deep into the parallel stories of the war in Iraq and the Valerie (Plame) Wilson leaks. "Hubris" is well worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe the best I've read in this genre!
Although I knew who Dr. Laura Schlessinger was, to my knowledge I've never listened to her on the radio or seen her on television, so I really didn't know what to expect from her book, other than that I had heard is was very good. As a minister, I counsel a lot of young couples and thought I might glean some useful information here. I can't begin to express how refreshing her book has been. Dr. Laura's no-holds barred delivery is a welcome change from the watered down marriage advice books that tend to surface so often.
5-0 out of 5 stars A misunderstood Subject
This can be a misunderstood book as indicated by some of the negative reviews. People tend to get defensive when you stir up the status quo. This is not meant to be a book on 'How to Fix All Marriages' or meant to imply that all failed marriages are the woman's fault. Really, the author is obviously not that simple minded. It is a book that addresses SPECIFIC issues of "Double Standards", self-centeredness and about men who aren't appreciated by their wives and feel dehumanized and taken for granted. There are many men who feel this way, and their feelings are not considered to be valid or important, which is why this book was written. This is NOT a book to advise women to be a submissive 'servant' to a dominating abusive husband. It is about respect and remembering that your partner is more than just a 'husband' or 'wife'. Your partner is (or should be) the most important person in your life and in your heart, and does not deserve to be put on the bottom of the list.
5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, straightforward and very valuable!
The major point is to love, respect and take care of your husband! Of course, this does NOT mean that YOU have to play the role of a wife-doormat! Dr. Laura didn't leave her career and job in order to be a housewife. That's why the book is more about PRIORITIES! I think that many people have misunderstood her advice about the common issue- the husband wants to be intimate but she doesn't want because she is tired, not in a mood, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, exciting course! Well worth the money!
Father Keating eloquently re-expresses timeless truths in the light of modern ways of knowledge, with humor and great clarity. He talks sense, and isn't afraid to question established ideas. He isn't afraid to challengeus. He employs modern approaches including developmental psychology tore-present the wisdom of Christ in ways which resonate deeply with themodern mind. His clarity on a par with Anthony De Mello"s"Awareness", but he goes beyond theory to shows us how we canincreasingly apply spiritual truths through our life, prayer andmeditation. De Mello shunned techniques, which he regarded as programming.Easy for him to say, but we deluded ones need to start somewhere, and Fr.Keating shows us how to start. As long as we understand that "the mapis not the territory"I think there is benefit in having a map of thepath we are to progress. Father Keating offers us what seems to be a goodone. Christians of any denomination who are stuck, or who cannot make senseof mainstream Church teachings in our age will I think come away with therenewed enthusiasm born of seeing things from a whole new angle.FatherKeating shows us that the genuine teachings of Christ have great meaningand power. They have undiminished validity in our age. But our world-view,our whole paradigm today is different from that of 2000 years ago. Metaphors which convinced people fairly easily then are often not nearly sopersuasive to our more questioning minds today. Some of the teachingsneed to be re-expressed in the light of modern ways of knowledge in orderfor us to be able to fully appreciate and participate in their validitytoday. Father Keating does this with startling clartiy. Others who areinterested in meditation and spirituality will no doubt be surprised todiscover what Father Keating has to teach. There is a commonality betweengenuine contemplative or mystical approaches to the ultimate which comesacross very strongly here. Jesus said to the (significantly, as yetunconverted) Pharisees "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you".(Luke 17) To me, this is one of the most significant passages in the Bible, and yet most appear to ignore it. Why don't we experience the Kingdom?Father Keating teaches us about our false self, and gives us techniques tostart to overcome its false programs for happiness, and turn ourselvestowards genuine spiritual values, the road to real happiness. It says inthe Bible that we must be born again. I believe this, yet many claim tohave had this experience, and some of them do not show the exemplarybehavior one would hope to see from such a person. I think Fr.Keating castssome light on why this is often so. Anthony De Mello tells a story of a manwho went to a village and showed them how to make fire. So for a time, everyone participated in this great miracle, and gained warmth and theother benefits of fire. But after the man was gone, the people made atemple to that man, and enshrined the fire making instruments, told greattales of the wonder of fire, perhaps had heated theological arguments overthe merits of different firemaking methods... But there was no more fire..It appears that people like the anonymous medieval monk who wrote "TheCloud of Unknowing" had developed the "technology ofenlightenment" which allowed humans to participate in the mystery ofGod, rather than just waiting around for posthumous salvation. I had longsuspected that Christian Mysticism offers "technology ofenlightenment" akin to Buddhist practices, butfound Christian Mysticwritings impenetrable compared to the clarity of modern Buddhist authors.Fr. Keating is however as clear as any Buddhist teacher, and amplydemonstrates that the Christian faith offers us a complete path tospiritual growth, not just a posthumous ticket to Heaven. This is the kindof course you'll want to listen to many times. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful
I am primarily an aural learner.Listening to this book on CD was a delight. The last two cd's were phenomenal.I had read them but listening to them was like hearing them for the first time.
5-0 out of 5 stars fascinating and practical
I've never written a review before; but when I saw that nobody else had commented on this audio book (the four cd set), I wanted to enter an emphatic endorsement of it.I have read many books on psychology, religion and emotions. This book integrates all of them.I was originally interested the influence of meditation on controlling stress and negative emotions. That information is here and it is very compelling.(Consequently, I have also ordered many meditation and guided imagery tapes as well). But there is so much more in this book... so much interesting information, it's hard to even know where to start.I will try to give a couple of examples.5-0 out of 5 stars fascinating and practical
