Need to know basics
My quest for a recent Mercedes SL 350 shifted into an higher gear when I came upon this link and decided to buy this book. It's brimful of tips 'n tricks on buying strategies. When visiting several candidates I was able to identify 1. a (possible) leak in the rubber ring of the cilinderhead 2. a simple slipping clutch on the first two candidates (it was a tiptronic)

solid rear axle only
This book is useless for anything other than info about setting up solid rear axle systems. everything else in this book is either incomplete or filled with editing errors. A whole book about chassis engineering etc that at no point whatsoever mentions Ackerman angle is unbelievable. Mr. Adams says that to find the C of G position is difficult so he doesnt tell us how he tells us to assume where it is based on other cars hhhmmm Then how come in race and rally car source book mr staniforth explains how in less than a page. Save your money or buy staniforths book and see how its really done

There are much better options
Despite the title, it's mainly focused on suspension design and tuning. It has some useful stuff, but nothing you can't find in many other books, and there are some basic errors on it.

Black and White Bliss!
For a T-Bird restoration enthusiast, this book is an amazing resource.The pictures are mostly in black and white. Color would've made it '5-stars'. Nontheless, without a shadow of doubt the book itself is truly a T-Bird lover's collector item.There is a great lot of detail on the A-40 (1954-1957) models. Since I'm doing a 1957, it truly works for me.

The book is a collector's piece in itself
I have owned this book for about 16 or 17 years. It is a fine reference piece, but it should not be compared to current Thunderbird books. There are scores of close-up photographs that show the finer points of Thunderbirds, from the Volumatic Radio to the SwingAway Steering Wheel. The black and white photos do not in any way detract from the history or technological correctness of everything that is presented. If you need color photographs then look elsewhere. If you want well-researched data and wonderful close-ups, then this is the book for you. The book itself is a collector's item because of its period correctness and the fact that when it was published there was no other book that could come close to it in lavishness or completeness. I think that still holds true today.

Thunderbird!
This book has a lot of good information on 1955 thru 1966 Thunderbirds. Although not complete with respect to information on every aspect of a concours restoration, and hindered by mostly black and white photos of thedetails of each year, it is still an excellent resource for anyonerestoring a 1966 or older Thunderbird. It is especially good for thoseinterrested in the two seaters from 55 - 57. I bought this book and paid extra for overnight shipping.It paid for itself within 3 or 4 days when we were able to repair our 95 Golf ourselves using this book and a little bit of diagnosis. The book is easy enough for just about anyone to use and detailed enough to make any repairs.

From a non-mechanical reader
To my surprise with little mechanical knowledge or experience, I was able to understand surprisingly more than I expected. However, there were still procedures I could only understand up to a point where I had to skip on to another section unless I happened to be with a mechanical minded person who could explain in simpler terms. The biggest part of a "4 instead of 5 rating" may even be my incompetence rather than the publisher's writing ability. No doubt it is the best you can get without spending $400-$500 for the auto manufacturer's manuals. Filled with tips and tricks of auto repair which alone are worth the cost of the book.

GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!
The only complaint I have about this book is that I did not buy it when I first started selling cars.The information in the book gives SO much insight into the car business!!It took me about 2 years to learn everything in this book because I had to learn it as I went along.I made LOTS of mistakes that I wouldn't have made had I known about the book.There are tons of books about selling, but this is the ONLY book I have found so far that is just about selling cars.I LOVED it!!!!!!

Vintage Beauties
This book has a fine combination of beautiful photos and well written text about an American niche.There are stories and examples from all over America that give a glimpse of the joy of seeing the world from a home away from home.

This is my trailer bible!
I have a weakness for books on architecture and interior decorating anyway. But this is the one I turn to again and again. For those of us with Champaign tastes and beer budgets, a vintage trailer is ulimately doable. Own your own piece of modernist archeture, albeit on wheels, even though you could never touch a Mies or Wright. When ever I try to figure out what to do with my 1957 Sportcraft (a classic silver-clad "canned ham"), I flip through these pages. I always find something inspiring.

A must read
This is an incredible wealth of information for anyone interested in architecture, travel trailers, and Americana in general. Lovely photography is augmented by nicely coordinated text. Some redundancy is my only criticism.

inconceivable
I'm so baffled and delighted by the adventure these 2 guys embarked on, I've been wildly telling all my family and friends to check out this DVD because though it takes 2 sittings to watch the entire thing (you just can't condense 100 days into 2 hours you know), every minute is plain riveting.I would recommend watching the DVD's before reading the book, then you can better picture where they are and the people they meet while you're reading along.
Complaints about the bed your made
I made the mistake of reading Simon's JT before reading this work. I failed to adequately drop my expectations, and was let down as a result.I say that on two levels. First, the writing, and second the riding.That Simon met with these blokes to shake hands and snap photos does not mean their "adventure" was on par with his. Second their writing, like the ride it seemed, was the product of some tight schedule driven by "have to's" versus desire to.
Vicarious Travel
I am one of the individuals who are a sucker for travel narratives.As much as I love to travel, there is very little likelihood that it will ever involve a motorbike journey around the world.Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman do just this and their tale is a delight.

I thought the book was an outstanding read and in fact have read the book several times.I have no idea why some reviewers want to critique Mr. Lavigne's writing style or "vulgar" word selection so harshly.He is, after all, writing about the Hells Angels.I feel these folks are missing the main point of the book which is to give the reader and insightful look into the bike gang, their rituals, codes etc.To this end, Mr. Lavigne does an outstanding job!I found the book to be a very comprehensive portrait of the most famous of biker gangs.If these readers were so offended by some of Mr. Lavignes language, choice of words whatever then they need not be worried with researching the Hells Angels!Simply put, the book is by far the best and most insightful look into the inner workings of the Hells Angels that I have ever read - and I have read most all of the books on the Hells Angels out there.I strongly recommend it. ... Interesting History
An interesting bit of history on the worlds largest motorcycle club
insights into a secretive organization from the man who knows it best
This may be the most difficult review that I have written to date because I began reading this book with a certain amount of prejudice. I have ridden motorcycles for about forty years and I began at about the time that the Hell's Angels motorcycle club was coming to national prominence, so it seems as though I have been hearing stories of the Angels all of my life.
An interesting read
Bottom line up front, this book is well worth reading.The writing style is neither peotic nor amateurish, but it is blunt.He is biased, but makes no efforts to hide it.He has strong opinions, and is not afraid to voice them.In other words, reading the book is like sitting in a bar listening to Sonny Barger tell you about his life over a few beers.It is a refreshing perspective.

Great history of the 911
Although it doesn't have the technical details of Frere's "911 Story", I think for most of us this is a better overall book. I also recommend Leffingwell's "Porsche Legends". If you are a Porsche 911 fan, this is well worth having.

5 stars but...
..only if you are interested in a pictorial evolution of the 911. The pictures inside are awesome and they are not to be found on the internet. The supplementary text is comprehensive and very informative and the book is readable throughout.

Excellent Historical Account of Management at General Motors.
This book "My Years with General Motors" was originally published in 1963 and is just as relevant reading today as any books written by top managers since then.The book is not easy to read, it is well over 400 pages of thoughtful text, but it is well worth reading for people with an interest in the history of General Motors, the history of the automobile, history of industrial technology in the 20th century, etc...

I owned this book in the 70s
I had a '72 Super Beetle, from 1973 to 1977, and kept it running using this book. I did all sorts of procedures using the book--tune-ups with setting the valve clearance (many times), replacing my muffler, heater box, clutch cable replacement, and changing my leaking fuel pump once in 15 minutes in the auto parts store lot--without the book.
If you only buy one book for your VW, make it this one.
This is the proverbial "VW bible" Many aircooled VW's come with this book already in the trunk even though the owners manual was lost 30-some-odd years ago. Not only is it full of indespensible information, its also quite an interesting read.
More than VW's it teaches mechanics!!
I bought this bought back when it was a first edition, and learned all I needed to work on VW's. It teaches not only about bugs and buses, but basic mechanics skills and tricks. Much of this is not needed today; the distributor is a thing of the past, fuel injection has replaced carbs, etc. It is a shame because if mechanics learned these basic things along with the "replace it" mentality, they would all be better diagnosticians and could get to the heart of problems more effectively.
