3-0 out of 5 stars Up to date
I recently purchased this text book to help me with the exceptional students in my class. The book is up to date, but I gave it only 3 stars because of the way it is formated on the page. The paper also has a sheen to it which in certain light makes it difficult to read. Maybe I'm picky, but repositioning the book due to the sheen is wasting my time and delaying how much reading I can do.
3-0 out of 5 stars Fancy but disappointing
alittle to "glossy" for me... hard to focus my attn to the important aspects. Good overall strategies though

5-0 out of 5 stars Most practical book out there.
After researching most of the books on the market for Aspergers children and teens, this is surely the most practical source on social skills training. It's not a theoretical treatise, but a user-friendly way to quickly teach relevant skills to students with AS. I recommend to parents and teachers alike.

2-0 out of 5 stars for children under 12
this book seems to target children under 12 years of age.It has very few pointers for adolescents. this book tends to be aimed at the education profession rather than parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best social skills book for our family
As a parent homeschooling a child with Asperger Syndrome, Ive bought about a dozen books to help me teach my child social skills. This one is the most useful Ive found. Most books on this topic are aimed only at teachers and are hard to adapt to use at home with one child; thats not the case with this book. While the book includes instructions for school personnel and describes how to teach the skills in classrooms and small groups, it is relatively free of educational jargon and doesnt waste too much space on things that useless to me, like reproducible handouts for the children to take home to their parents.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible 5-Point Scale
I recently ordered this book to use with my students. I am a special education consultant primarily working with students that have Asperger's syndrome or traumatic brain injury in a public school setting. I am always looking for materials that are functional and easy to implement. This book is great! Very straight-forward; provides quick and useful examples without a lot of lengthy explanation. This book provides tools for both teachers and parents to use quickly and without a lot of training or experience with Asperger children. Very easy to adapt and individualize as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written with practical solutions
My son was recently diagnosed with Aspergers so I purchased many books on the subject to better help him. This book by far offers the most practical solutions to everyday school issues.Reading about theories and studies is helpful up to a point but as a parent I needed hands on solutions to common problems and this book provided many options that have worked for my son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm Singing to the Choir!
I haven't found anyone who hasn't found this book incredibly valuable. I have bought at least four of them because my friends keep "borrowing" them and somehow don't manage to get them back to me. It is such a helpful book that lays out point by point how our kids experience elementary school, their various challenges and how to deal with them. Any parent who is actively involved with their child who has Autism Spectrum Disorder or Asperger Syndrome should have this book as a reference. And every elementary school teacher working with our AS kids should read it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every AS parent should have one of these
Since my son's diagnosis at the end of first grade, I've been purchasing book after book, trying to educate myself. The realities of being a parent of an AS child means that you have to educate, not only yourself, but your child's teachers. This book is a great way to go about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great idea......
Power Cards is a great tool in helping some autistic children modify and/or change their inappropriate behavior. It might not be the right tool for all autistic children, but for some it can really open up doors to social appropriateness and development. The examples are great and the clinical results listed in the book give a great deal of credibility to this strategy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource
This book is wonderful and helps me so much with my Asperger's son.I was even able to share it with my son's special education teacher. She thought it was wonderful. It's a great resource for Asperger's children who have a special interest. It's a way to communicate with them.Well worth your money.I'm buying another copy to donate to my son's school.

Autism and its related condition, Asperger's Syndrome are neurobiolgical conditions that affect sensory processing and communication. The range is as great as there are people on the a/A spectrum and there are often overlapping behaviors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional and behavioral disorders of children and youth
This is an impressive book in its seventh edition since 1977 and used as an introductory text in special education on the subject of children and youth with emotional and behavioral disorders. It is also impressive, because the publisher has developed a companion website accompanying the book with resources for the professor and the student (www.prenhall.com/kauffman). The website is divided according to the chapters of the book with focus questions, multiple choice questions and web resources. The user will also find a message board and a chat room for communication with other students and professors. For the professor there is a syllabus manager in order to create and modify an online syllabus for their courses. The book has 18 chapters arranged with the text arranged around basic concepts like the nature, extent and history of the problem and conceptual approaches to it, assessment of the problem, major causal factors, the many facets of disordered emotions and behavior and each chapter ending with personal statement or reflections by someone else that the author, about teaching pupils with these disorders. I especially liked the history chapter of special education for students with emotional and behavioral disorders, because history is so important for how we deal with problems today. Before 1800 most of the children and youth with emotional and behavioral disorders were looked upon as possessed, wicked or idiotic. In the 19th century teaching went from lunatic asylums and institutions for idiots to houses of refuge, detention centers and later to public school classes for truants, troublemakers and backward pupils. In the 20th century the mental hygiene and child study movements led efforts to deal more effectively with the youth at home and in school. In the 1940s psychoanalytic oriented educational programs began, 1960s and 70s saw periods of rapid growth in educational interventions and the 1980s saw new legislation. All in all a recommended book for persons working with emotional and behavioral disorders both in children and youth.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for EBD teachers
I had this book as one of my college textbooks. It is very user friendly and has a lot of great qualities. The book describes all of the possiblefactors associated with emotional and behavioral disorders, as well asprevalance, history, models of thinking, screening and classification.Thebook dexcribes many different disorders by giving definitions, types, prevalance, causes and prevention, and intervention strategies. One of thebest things about the book is the abundance of ongoing case studies in thechapters. These are especially great for discussion with others aboutcauses and stratagies for prevention.Every chapter has questions at thebeginning to think about as you read, and a summary at the end. There arealso personal reflections by different teachers and professionals at theend of every chapter, which relate to experiences these people have hadwith the various disorders.Overall, this would be a great collegetextbook, or a great reference book for someone seeking information aboutemotional and behavioral disorders. ... This book is a fabulous resource for anyone working with children or adults who display inappropriate behaviors.Special Education teachers, administrators, Behavior Specialists, Counselors, Psychologists and people providing direct care will benefit from the hands-on tool. The book gives sample Behavioral Support Plans (Behavior Management Plans) derived from an excellent Functional Assessment Interview (FAI) tool. 5-0 out of 5 stars Holler for Michie
Gregory Michie's series of vignettes weaves an interesting story of his life as a young, inexperienced teacher in a poor and violent public school system. Although the book's time line is scattered, the reader can easily get a feel for the struggles of both Michie and his students.Set in the 1990's in the "Back of the Yard" Mexican-American neighborhood in inner city Chicago, we are introduced briefly, yet intensely, to many of Michie's students who struggle to stay in school. The pages fly by because they are rich with dialogue and stories from Michie's colorful students. If you was looking for an insightful book with a passionate look into the mind of some diversely opinionated adolescents, this is a great book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holla' back!
Greg Mitchie gives a very personal account about the compassion and hard work involved in teaching. There is a great balance between teacher and student reflections on school, in particular middle school, and life. It is a thoughtful and emotional insight into what being a teacher should be about - promoting student voice. Great read for anyone insterested in teaching at the secondary level, at the beginning of their teaching career or in an inner city. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Johnny Doesn't behave Twenty Tips and Measurable BIPs
This management of behavior text has five chapters. These are(1) an introduction (2)creating a positive classroom environment for all students, (3) functional behavior assessments and behavioral intervention plans, (4) measuring behavioral progress and (5) basic plans.A very brief final words summary concludes the book. This text emphasizes the steady use of scientific approaches to human behaviors noted in each individual student to eventually have a highly personalized plan for each student as a means of integrating the outcomes by enhancing total growth for the entire group into a steady move to enlarge the learning possibilities of each student in an orderly fashion. The specifics of behavioral science and it's application to every learning center is strongly illustrated.Without mentioning it specifically the application of anthropology can be sensed by the wide range of examples.Since each student is moored in a specific home setting this is understandable given the mix of racial, religious and economic settings which make the composition of each class. This demonstrates the insight that can be used to encourage all students to comply by personal adaptation to the goals set for learning achievement. The Authors stress the constant growth of teachers in assessing the differences each student brings to the classroom so that norms for learning can be stimulated equally in all students. The drop in wide ranging differences can be used to stimulate the total learning of all.The examples in the chapter on creating a positive classroom environment are designed to give insight so that teachers rise above a mere mechanical teaching process to one that catalyzes learning for all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable for those dealing with groups of children
If you are involved with children in the education system this book may be what you are looking for.The authors take the reader through creating a measurable Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP)."Why Johnny Doesn't Behave" is not a detailed psychological text on dealing with problem children. It is a primer on dealing with the more common problems through an explanation of how to replace the negative behavior with positive behaviors.Perhaps the most valuable part of the book starts in the third section with detailed explanations of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Behavioral Intervention Plans. The information includes detailed flowchart analysis of behavior and how to integrate an intervention plan into the flowchart so that the results are clear and measurable.Sections three and four cover these in detail and are an excellent analysis of how to make an assessment and document both the assessment and the intervention plan. With the increasingly litigation against schools, knowing how to document the behavior and intervention that was taken becomes more and more important not only for the child but for the school and educator as well.It is a recommended read for anyone dealing with children in an educational environment.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Reference Book
"Kids in the syndrome Mix..." is a good reference book, listing disorders and giving tips for parents and teachers that should help them understand the children in the syndrome mix better. However, I feel it lacks in-depth information and details on direct application in the classroom. That might be beyond the scope of the book; therefore, you will have to look for that information elsewhere. In conclusion, the book serves the purpose of a stepping stone for further study - or it can be read as a quick guide, depending on your level of interest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
As a clinical psychologist specializing in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders, I have found this book to be an excellent resource.I recommend it to many families, andto teachers who work with this population. One of the strengths of this book is its articulate examination of the interplay between the cognitive, social and behavioral issues experienced by individuals with Aspergers. The book also suggests a number of intervention strategies that are realistic, practical and helpful for addressing skills deficits and encouraging the potential for individuals with Aspergers.

This book focuses specifically on academic issues of children with Asperger's in middle and high school. There are many other books about other aspects of Aspergers, but this is the only good book I have found on this specific topic.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good scheduling advice but little on pragmatics
There is a wealth of advice in this book which all parents and teachers should find helpful.Plenty of checklists are offered and numerous cameo case histories are presented. The references are good but perhaps a bit limited (may be of importance only to researchers - no mention of central coherence deficit for instance). The main point of the book is the get schools to recognise and deal with stress build up in AS pupils before it boils over. Some of this will be familiar from Myles' other book on tantrum management.

The ADHD book of list is a great guide to discovering the facts about ADHD and what can be done to work with a child who has been diagnosed with it and help him or her to be successful in life. 5-0 out of 5 stars this book is HUGE!
I didn't expect this book to be so huge...in size and also in the amount of info.i just received this book today and have skimmed over most of the info in it. i have already found several pages that i will photocopy and give to my child's teacher. the way that the information is presented is easy to follow, easy to locate, and easy to understand. well worth the money and time spent reading it from cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Explanation
This book is excellent in defining what a 'Selectively Mute Child' is and goes through.Because of this book, I understand what my child is feeling when he becomes anxious.I not only learned that my child is 'Selectively Mute', but I also learned that I have been all of my life when I thought I was just 'painfully shy.'A reviewer made the comment that this book was overpriced.Maybe when they wrote the review they forgot that there is no set price on what parents pay to help the children that need us.Besides, part of the proceeds goes to a foundation called "Speak Out for Our Children."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ideal Classroom Setting for the Selectively Mute Child

1-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced booklet

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, with one potential problem
I've been using this with my daughter, who has struggled with other programs and she is making very good progress. Everything is broken down into managable chunks.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worked Fairly Well for My Family
I am a homeschool mom of four kids. I started my oldest two sons at around age 5 to 5 1/2. While it isn't the most thrilling program out there it is very simple. I mostly skipped teaching them their alphabet and taught them their letters one at a time using PP. (They were already familiar with the idea of letters making unique sounds but hadn't put the ideas all together yet.) It starts with teaching the short vowel sounds first, then most of the consonants and on from there. I was able to work with each child for about 10 minutes a day for 3-5 days a week. Within a couple of weeks they had picked up on a bit and soon were reading small words.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not a professional but found this greatly informative and helpful
I am not a teacher, nor degreed in education.I found this book exhaustive and thorough. It provided more information than I knew existed and my grandson (8years) has used the information to his benefit. It reguires systematic and committed use to master its contents. I believe it will be worth its price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great program for teaching emotions
I have been using the Mind Reading software program for about 2 months with several students. This is a great way to teach students with high-functioning autism or Asperger's syndrome recognition of emotions. The amazon description has this product listed as a book, but it is actually an interactive software program that features actors that act out various emotions (over 400! emotions). The program helps the student to focus on the movement of the faces as the actors act out an emotion as well as voice tone and messages to match the emotion. The program helps students learn about emotions without the stress of the human component.I have already started to see positive results with students starting to question the emotions of those around them and in their lives.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars See to Learn, See to Work, See to Play
Seeing Through New Eyes is an introduction to the treatment of visual conditions that go beyond 20/20 eyesight. Developmental or behavioral vision care can have a significant impact on behavioral, social and learning problems associated with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. Poor eye contact and other behaviors are often the result of difficulty with "ambient vision" that drives spatial awareness, visual organization and balance/coordination. Dr. Kaplan gives guidance on how to identify the visual deficits of nonverbal children, select performance lenses that will alter ambient vision and how to create individual vision management programs in order to assist each individual in achieving maximum success in life. This book is essential reading for parents of children with autism spectrum disorder and professionals in the fields of autism, optometry, ophthalmology, psychology and education. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Presicion through simplicity
As an individual unfamiliar with the nuances of AS, I found "My Social Stories Book" particularly effective in identifying, conveying and demystifying what is mundane for most people, but what can be overwhelming for those with AS.Sean McAndrew's brilliant translation of the text via child-friendly illustrations relevant to their respective scenarios are what make a publication like this one truly work.Much like crosswalk symbols, these illustrations must be absolutely simplistic in order to be unmistakeably understood. Much respect to McAndrew who rendered the abstract idea of divorce in such tender illustrative grace.
