useful but too repetitive
This book provides parents with a lot of useful information about raising bilingual kids including how to choose a school, how to decide whether you want to raise your children bilingually and how to do it as well as how to deal with some of the commonest obstacles you may encounter when trying to keep your child interested in both languages. The problem I had with this book is that the author seems to go over the same topics again and again repeating herself a lot. For example she would mention the same recommendations on how to keep your children interested in learning both languages again and again and again which I found annoying. I expected her to go more in depth on how to raise children bilingually, I felt that she covered the topic quite superficially.

Finally, a book on bilingual children I like!
This one is realistic and specifically for parents teaching all languages. It's not as preachy as some of the other more popular titles. I like the format, allowing me to skip the parts that don't apply to our situation. Sooo helpful!
What I loved was that the author gets that families are all different and doesn't just give a list of rules, but instead explores the underlying issues bilingual families deal with when they think they are just dealing with language.I feel much more empowered about the decisions I'm making-that I'm doing it in a thoughtful way, that I've considered the basics.This was easy-reading, too, although there's alot of research and it isn't dumbed-down. ... Wonderfully edited, outstanding
The Bilingualism Reader is the only existing reader in the field, a comprehensive collection of the classic articles in the study of bilingualism. The introduction includes a perceptive discussion of the dimensions of bilingualism by the editor and an article on the description of bilingualism by Mackey. Part one, Sociolinguistic dimensions of bilingualism, is further subdivided into two sections, language choice(with classic articles on diglossia and language choice by Ferguson and Fishman), and bilingual interaction (with articles on code-switching by Blom & Gumperz, Myers-Scotton, Auer, and Wei, Milroy & Ching).Part two, Linguistic dimensions of bilingualism, includes two sections, grammar of code-switching (with articles by Poplack, Clyne, and Myers-Scotton & Jake), and language acquisition of bilingual children (articles by Genesee and Meisel). An extremely student-friendly book.
While there are so many different textbooks on bilingualism, this Reader is the one to buy. It contains all the important articles on various aspects of bilingualism that a serious student must read. The study questions and activities are useful as mini-dissertation topics. The chapter on methdology by Li Wei, the editor, is excellent. The resource list is most up-to-date and useful. A must read for all interested in the 'heart' of language.
Natasha Lvovich's book has more to do with the psychological implications of language learning than with any of the theorectical aspects of languageacquistion.Even though it is not autobiographical in the traditionalsense, THE MULTILINGUAL SELF is obviously autobiographical in tone.
