3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty much run of the mill
I expected far more substantial explanation and real-world advice. What I got was a collection of anecdotes that yielded more common sense conclusions than expert insight.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a Practical Guide
For obvious reasons this book should be easy to read. Unfortunately it isn't, especially not if you're not English (and due to the theme of the book, at least one of two readers could be expected to be non English). The book is full of incredibly long sentences and woolly language and the constant use of terms like 'minority language' and 'majority language' is very confusing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple; full of good sense; perfect for a parent
I'm parent of three bilingual boys. I have read different books on education of bilingual babys. This one is perfect in my opinion. Is simple but complete. Is full of examples and, above all, is full of "common sense": I mean, the book present the bilinguism explaining also its problems and the differences among different babys; it helps you to understand that certain limits and situations are completely normal. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for an ESL teacher
Dr. Vald?s did an amazing research for this book. He found 4 ESL students as his subjects and (with parents and their agreement) he tracked their English learning progress and also their social progress. He also talks about the teachers at the high schools he visited and describes their teaching techniques, what worked for the students and what didn't.
1-0 out of 5 stars boring!
I was assigned this book for my ESL endorsement class. It is very dull, and if I didn't need to read this for class I would never have made it past the first few pages. The anecdotes are dry, uninformative and not helpful in real-world situations.Professors, please skip this selection and save your students! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Bilingual Education
This book was required reading for a class I took, and I think it is a great introduction to bilingual education.Even if you think you have the basic idea of what bilingual education is, this book provides everything from the history of bilingual education to its legal basis to teaching strategies.A great book that should be read by anyone interested in education, even if your focus isn't dual language instruction. The odds are that most teachers in the U.S. today will work with English language learners at some point, and this book will give any teacher a greater understanding of the role of language in the classroom. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful...but not everything
This book was very helpful to my RICA preparation, but in conjuction with the Ready for RICA book.If you're using both, the approaches are slightly different, like the difference between the Clifs and the Barron's prep books for the CSET.Each had some merit, neither would be a good idea to be the single source for preparation. My essay portion was helped, however, by studying from this book, as it's suggested answers were different from the Ready for RICA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great RICA test book!!!
This book prepares you for the case study on the RICA exam and has sample case studies for you to test yourself. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent study material!
I used this book in addition to Ready for RICA by James Zarillo. You MUST read the instruction pages, or the book will seem pointless. But if you read the instructions, you will get a lot from the book itself. There are sample case studies similiar to those on the RICA with all possible answers listed. There are also study tips to help prepare for the exam. This book was a core in my preparation for the RICA and I passed on the first try. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars puts a human face on the issue of immigrant education
Unsure of how you feel about bilingual education? Even more likely, don't really understand what bilingual education is? Read this book.Laurie Olsen helps us put a human face on what has become a political question. Her clear and well-written portrait of one school puts the issue of language, emotional and sensitive as it can be, in concrete terms of pragmatic educational effectiveness: You can't learn what you don't understand. For anyone who cares about this important issue, or even feels as though they should. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but heavy
This book has some good information, but it's like carrying a phone book, and a lot of the info is addresses. There's too much stuff here. A good guidebook for teaching overseas is 'The World is a Class'. Everything written is to the point, and it's a lot easier to carry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not only for Brits!
I always recommend this book to people who tell me they are thinking of getting into teaching English as a foreign language.I think it provides a fabulous overview of the industry, and the pros and cons of teaching abroad. The book helped me to narrow down what was most important to me in an overseas teaching position.I found the personal anecdotes to be illuminating, and they were one of many factors that eventually steered me away from teaching in Asia or the Middle East. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching English Abroad

5-0 out of 5 stars important concepts in education
Fantastic Book!Makes a revolutionary concept seem simple and obvious. As an education student, I plan to take from this book for the rest of my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teacher
This text was recommended reading and as a teacher myself, I find it confounding that it was not required reading during my teaching education. She certainly was ahead of her time, but Sylvia Ashton-Warner might still be distancing herself from those standard based minds determined to put children into the molds we have decided are necessary for their own good. How do we get children to see the power of language so that writing and reading have personal meaning that piques a lifelong journey into the love of learning--this book has some incredible seeds that a willing and curious mind might take, study, and find itself using to change the world, and at the very least the landscape of education as we see it today.Read this book if you want children to come alive to learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars ReadThis Book Once a Year
I am a teacher of 18 years who had to read this book in 1977 as part of my college teacher training and would like to share this book with all teachers. It is as relevant for me today with our scripted phonics and literature-rich reading programs as it was then. Sylia Ashton-Warner does more than portray a method and philosophy to teach reading to New Zealand's Maori children--she paints a vivid, dramatic picture of any classroom. The reader can see the combination of her daily, organized lesson plan superimposed with the actual unpredictable, spontaneous, and social nature of children.Sylvia writes in such a perceptive, humorous way that our sympathy goes out to the Maori children who are expected to learn reading, but are expertly led, not forced. 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that addresses Asian-American isssues.
"Unraveling" is a book that is easy to understand and read for both students and the general public who have been interested or have been party to what is going on with Asian-American issues in today's society. This book brings these issues to light from a series of actual interviews held in high schools. Stacey Lee hits the target and I hope she continues her writing. I look forward to more from this new writer who obviously has talent. ... Read more

I've taken 4 TESOL courses with Dr. Ariza (2 Undergraduate and 2 Master's Level).Dr. Ariza is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to working with ESOL/LEP students.Because of the changing student population and related instructional needs in our modern day society, every teacher needs to be well-versed in ESOL strategies.Fortunately for teachers, many of the ESOL strategies serve double-duty as ESE strategies. The textbooks Ariza has written are ones every preservice and veteran teacher needs to keep for handy reference. Well worth every penny! Thank you Dr. Ariza for your dedication to TESOL. ...
