Pretty much run of the mill
I expected far more substantial explanation and real-world advice. What I got was a collection of anecdotes that yielded more common sense conclusions than expert insight.
Not a Practical Guide
For obvious reasons this book should be easy to read. Unfortunately it isn't, especially not if you're not English (and due to the theme of the book, at least one of two readers could be expected to be non English). The book is full of incredibly long sentences and woolly language and the constant use of terms like 'minority language' and 'majority language' is very confusing.
Simple; full of good sense; perfect for a parent
I'm parent of three bilingual boys. I have read different books on education of bilingual babys. This one is perfect in my opinion. Is simple but complete. Is full of examples and, above all, is full of "common sense": I mean, the book present the bilinguism explaining also its problems and the differences among different babys; it helps you to understand that certain limits and situations are completely normal. ... Great book for an ESL teacher
Dr. Vald?s did an amazing research for this book. He found 4 ESL students as his subjects and (with parents and their agreement) he tracked their English learning progress and also their social progress.He also talks about the teachers at the high schools he visited and describes their teaching techniques, what worked for the students and what didn't.

I was assigned this book for my ESL endorsement class.It is very dull, and if I didn't need to read this for class I would never have made it past the first few pages.The anecdotes are dry, uninformative and not helpful in real-world situations.Professors, please skip this selection and save your students! ... A Great Introduction to Bilingual Education

Fundamental Spanish
I am a Spanish Teacher and I found this book so clear and streamlined that I can teach chapter by chapter and I see the fast progress the students make. Helpful...but not everything
This book was very helpful to my RICA preparation, but in conjuction with the Ready for RICA book.If you're using both, the approaches are slightly different, like the difference between the Clifs and the Barron's prep books for the CSET.Each had some merit, neither would be a good idea to be the single source for preparation.My essay portion was helped, however, by studying from this book, as it's suggested answers were different from the Ready for RICA.

Another great RICA test book!!!
This book prepares you for the case study on the RICA exam and has sample case studies for you to test yourself. Great book!

An excellent study material!
I used this book in addition to Ready for RICA by James Zarillo. You MUST read the instruction pages, or the book will seem pointless.But if you read the instructions, you will get a lot from the book itself.There are sample case studies similiar to those on the RICA with all possible answers listed.There are also study tips to help prepare for the exam.This book was a core in my preparation for the RICA and I passed on the first try. ... Not bad, but heavy
This book has some good information, but it's like carrying a phone book, and a lot of the info is addresses. There's too much stuff here. A good guidebook for teaching overseas is 'The World is a Class'. Everything written is to the point, and it's a lot easier to carry.

Not only for Brits!

Fantastic Book!Makes a revolutionary concept seem simple and obvious.As an education student, I plan to take from this book for the rest of my life.

This text was recommended reading and as a teacher myself, I find it confounding that it was not required reading during my teaching education.She certainly was ahead of her time, but Sylvia Ashton-Warner might still be distancing herself from those standard based minds determined to put children into the molds we have decided are necessary for their own good.How do we get children to see the power of language so that writing and reading have personal meaning that piques a lifelong journey into the love of learning--this book has some incredible seeds that a willing and curious mind might take, study, and find itself using to change the world, and at the very least the landscape of education as we see it today.Read this book if you want children to come alive to learning.

"Unraveling" is a book that is easy to understand and read for both students and the general public who have been interested or have been party to what is going on with Asian-American issues in today's society.
