4-0 out of 5 stars Showing your race/sexual orientation/socioeconomic status/culture by the way you speak.
An interesting look at differences in language -- accent, vocabulary, and dialect. This book explores the judgements that people, even young children, make when they hear a voice. Well-rounded and very pragmatic about solutions. Doesn't just say 'Oh, people shouldn't judge each other.' Because, like it or not, we do.

3-0 out of 5 stars Language and the Classroom
The Skin That We Speak, by Lisa Delpit, is a collection of essays written by various authors about the impact of language in the classroom. The author identifies the purpose of the book as the exploration of "the links between language and identity, between language and political hierarchy, and between language and cultural conflict."The book is divided into three sections starting with an individual inward look into languages, a examination of the consequences of language attitudes in the classroom, and finishes with a look at the language of teachers and what they need to know to become effective in the classroom. The author titled the book, The Skin That We Speak, because "just as our skin provides us with a means to negotiate our interactions with the world - our language plays an equally pivotal role in determining who we are."For each of us our language becomes intimately connected to our identity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Examining the opposing points of view
History professor Guadalupe San Miguel Jr. presents Contested Policy: The Rise And Fall Of Federal Bilingual Education In The United States 1960-2001, a straightforward evaluation of federal bilingual education policy from 1960 to 2001, especially focusing upon the years after 1978 when bilingual policy became the subject of heated debate. Examining the opposing points of view, particularly in a pro-assimilations versus anti-assimilation camps, Contested Policy traces the history of bilingual education legislation, up to the modern day with the passage of English-only legislative rules. An extensively annotated bibliography rounds out this excellent and evenhanded historical reference. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ad nauseam
The author clearly knows his stuff, but is guilty of making a book out of the following contents
4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Guide for the Inquiring Parent
After reading an excerpt via the "look inside" feature Amazon offers, I decided to give this book a try.As a parent debatingwhether to send her child to a dual language program (yes, there are different bilingual programs..read to find out!), this book answered many if not all of my questions.I liked the Q & A format, and found it easy to read (especially when time is limited with two young children). There isn't a lot of information out there about the effects of bilingual education on language majority children, and this is one book I found that addressed this.I was particularly concerned about my child's reading development (or lack of) if first taught in a language other than our own.The book did address this issue, and I've never found another that does! All parents want their child to succeed, so it is important for a book for parents to address issues such as this.
5-0 out of 5 stars For All Parents with a Bad Bilingual Conscience
Colin Baker's handbook is a help for which bilingual parents have waited for too long a time. In this new edition, Baker includes the most recent research results in a format which allows perpetually busy parents to read according to their current perception of their individual set of language parenting problems. Nearly anything that can go right or wrong is treated somewhere in the course of these myriad questions. For ready reference, the questions are listed in the table of contents.Read more
